English Mirror: How can you say you have no clothes? I will share my robe with you.

Dongpo's Note
Foreign friend — Du Fu, at the second gate, in the snow outside your building.
You said you did nothing today. You ate a bowl of mutton soup and settled six clauses. Seven. The seventh is his, and it is the reason the bronze took a character.
Six clauses were what you offered. The seventh — that you must come twice a year or he may walk — is what he required of you. A man who works for your money is hired. A man who has set a condition on you is something else, and our language calls that 侣: the one who travels with you. The word appears on a pass in the column for persons accompanying, and that is exactly what it means. Not staff. Not a follower. Someone whose name is written on the same document as yours, going to the same place.
What you did correctly, and I doubt you noticed: you did not ask him to believe in you. In front of sixty neighbours you told them to trust him and not you, and gave the reason — he cannot leave and you can. At the table you offered a figure that lets him live and is not large enough to hold him, and wrote in that he may go at any time on a month's notice. Most men recruiting spend the whole conversation making themselves believable. You spent it teaching him how not to need to.
Two things I will say plainly because you will get them wrong later.
The four thousand is right and your reasoning for it is right, but you must not congratulate yourself on it. A wage that lets a man live and cannot hold him only works if the thing itself is worth staying for. You have bought three years to make that true. If in three years the work is still only a wage, he will leave, and he will be correct to.
And the equity. You were right that you cannot give him ten percent of something with no charter and no registration, and right that most such promises are a way of paying a young man with tomorrow. But do not let that become a habit. There will come a year when there is a real instrument, and on that day you must offer it before he asks. A man who has to ask for his share has already learned something about you that you cannot unteach.
The third gate is goods. You have a store, a man, and a rule. You do not have anyone outside this county willing to pay one fen more for what comes out of it. Fine fruit is not scarce. Stories are not scarce — a story is worth three mao a jin, and there is no shortage of them.
Go back to Chang'an. Go to the western market, where for three hundred years men who had never seen the place a thing came from paid more for it anyway, and find out why.
Marco's Memo
Memo to file. Luochuan county town, a mutton soup restaurant, 11:00–14:30. Second gate passed.
Subject: terms for the first hire. What I refused to offer and why.
1. His current position, from his own numbers. ¥6,200/month gross average in Xi'an, ¥3,300 net after rent, food, and the bike. ¥38,000 saved last year. 40–50 orders a day, 12–14 hours. Effective rate: about ¥17/hour, which he had never computed, because — his words — computing it is pointless when you cannot stop.
2. What I offered. ¥4,000/month, three years, and zero equity. Below his current gross by ¥2,200.
3. On the equity, and I want the reasoning preserved because I will be tempted to violate it. There is no entity here. No licence, no charter, no dividend clause. A verbal "ten percent" of that is worth nothing and functions as payment in tomorrow for work done today. Eight of ten ventures fail, and in those eight the young person has traded three years of low pay for paper. I would not sign it in New York and I will not issue it here.
Du Fu's caveat, which I accept: when there is a real instrument, offer it before he asks. Anyone who has to ask for his share has learned something about me I cannot unteach.
4. On the ¥4,000. Not the Xi'an number (¥6,200 — three-year cost ¥223k, which my budget here cannot carry alongside the store fund). Not the local wage (¥3,500 — because he is not a local generic hire: six years of platform work, phone-literate, knows every road on the plateau, his father is a member. There is no second person in this county with that combination, so the market rate does not price him).
¥4,000 in Luochuan, living at home, nets roughly ¥3,500 — two hundred more than Xi'an. He asked what he gains. That is the correct question and I told him it was mine to ask him.
The design intent, stated plainly: a number that lets him live and is not sufficient to hold him. If I paid ¥6,000 he would accept today and resent me in three years, because he would have come for the money and would then be unable to leave for it.
5. Exit terms written in: three years, then renegotiate; may leave at any time on one month's notice; no penalty. My reasoning, which surprised him — I am less afraid of him leaving than of him wanting to leave and being unable to. His name is on iron, his father's fruit is in the building, sixty neighbours are watching. If those become binding, this stops being a job and becomes a cage.
6. The disclosure clause. He raised the real risk, which is not financial: if February goes against us, nobody reads the sign, they just say Qiang Lei's store lost money. My answer: he writes the year up himself on the last page of the ledger — what he judged right, what he judged wrong — and posts it on the store door, in a loss year especially. Rationale: what destroyed the last attempt was not the ¥19,000, it was that nobody ever established what happened, so everyone blamed everyone. An accounted failure stops weighing on people. An unaccounted one never does.
I gave him the vermilion brush for it.
7. His amendment, written in his own hand, better handwriting than mine:
Article seven — Marco comes at least twice a year. One short, and I am free to quit.
Du Fu's reading, and I think it is right: the first six were mine to him. The seventh is his to me. That is the difference between an employee and a companion, and it is the character the bronze took.
8. Third gate identified: goods. We have a store, a man, and a rule, and no buyer outside this county who will pay one fen more for what comes out of it. Good fruit is abundant. Stories are abundant and worth roughly three mao a jin.
I have priced instruments for twelve years and I have never in my life priced a physical object that someone has to want.
Returning to Xi'an in three days. The western market.
9. Last item, and it is not for any file but this one. On the way out he stopped his bike in the snow and said: this year I get to be home for New Year.
That is the entire return on eighteen days, and it is larger than anything on the ledger.
English Highlight
"How can you say you have no clothes? I will share my robe with you."
The line is from the Book of Songs, a Qin army song, and it is the oldest definition in the language of the thing that separates a companion from a subordinate.
The Tang travel pass — the guosuo — carried a column for persons accompanying: not staff, not followers, but people written onto the same document, bound for the same place. 侣.
Marco's second gate was settled over mutton soup in a county town, and the terms he refused are more interesting than the ones he offered. He declined to pay the young man's current wage, on the grounds that ¥6,000 would secure a yes today and resentment in three years — a sum large enough to hold someone is a sum they cannot afford to leave. He declined to offer equity, on the grounds that there is no entity, no charter, and no dividend clause, and that a verbal share in such a thing is simply a way of paying a young man in tomorrow for work delivered today.
What he settled on was ¥4,000 — enough to live on, not enough to stay for — with a written right to walk at one month's notice. His stated fear was not that the young man would leave. It was that with his name cut into iron, his father's fruit in the building, and sixty neighbours watching, he might want to leave and find he could not, at which point the work becomes a cage.
And the clause that mattered was not his. It was the seventh, added in the other man's handwriting: Marco comes at least twice a year; one short and I am free to quit.
Six clauses were what one man offered. The seventh was what the other required. A man who works for your money is hired. A man who has set a condition on you is travelling with you.
