English Mirror: The men of Samarkand are skilled traders and love profit. At twenty a man leaves for the neighbouring states, and wherever profit lies, there is nowhere he will not go.
The Western Market, after hours. Two cart ruts pressed into rammed earth, deep enough that you understand immediately they are not from one cart but from several hundred thousand, all on the same line.
Three days in Xi'an trying to produce a single sheet of paper that could travel with 984 jin of apples out of Luochuan. What I produced said: Origin, Luochuan, Shaanxi. Variety, Red Fuji. Grade, one. Two million mu of orchard in this province can print the same three lines. I threw it away.
The Sogdian who found me is a sabao — the headman of a resident foreign community, an actual Tang office with a rank. He carries a purse of frankincense-like resin: benzoin, out of Persia, an ounce against three bolts of silk, call it fifteen hundred coins.
I asked whether the price came from scarcity. Flat no. Benzoin is sold all over Chang'an — the eastern market, the western market, the pharmacies in Pingkang ward. The price comes from the fact that everyone else's is cut with pine resin, which smells close, burns close, and cannot be distinguished by any buyer.
That is a lemons market, described from inside it, in the seventh century. Buyers cannot verify, therefore will not pay for quality, therefore quality exits.
His solution is a strip of tanned leather written in Sogdian. Date. Forty jin of benzoin, out of such a place in Persia. Then seven names — every hand the shipment passed through between Persia and Chang'an, with the city and the month. And a final line: if there is adulteration, the seven bear it together.
Why that works, and it is not the document. Five of the seven are from Samarkand and two from Tashkent, which means all seven have families in the same lane in Chang'an, several hundred households, intermarried, and he is the man who administers their rites, their disputes, and this. The penalty for a false consignment is not a fine. It is that no Sogdian in Chang'an trades with you again, your daughter does not marry, your son is not taught the trade, and when you die nobody buries you.
So the three bolts of silk are not paying for the resin. They are paying for the seven names.
Then the part I had wrong, and had been wrong about for three days.
I asked whether the buyer can read the leather. He cannot — he does not read Sogdian. He asks for it, turns it over twice, and hands it back. What he knows is that it exists. Will he ever trace it? One in a hundred, and probably none. And the sabao's line, which sends me straight back to Shang Yang in the snow: the value is not that he will check. It is that he could check at any time. 舍人无验者坐之 — an innkeeper who lodges a man without 验 is punished with him. I had read 验 as a document. It is not. It means: able to be checked.
And the correction that reorganised the whole third gate. I have been trying to prove my apples are better. He says do not: an apple is an apple, mine is sweet and so is the next village's, and the buyer bites one and cannot tell. Prove instead where it came from — who grew it, what day it was picked, how many days to the store, what temperature, who kept the book, who was present at opening, sold to whom on what date at what price.
I have every one of those. Qiang Donglin's name on the board. The picking date in the ledger. Temperature and humidity that Qiang Lei records daily. Six articles cut into iron.
His phrase: that is your Sogdian leather.
Last, and it is the piece I would never have found alone. The document is not for the consumer. The consumer never asks. It is for the next hand. He sells to a middleman who sells to a pharmacy; the middleman is the one who reads it, because he has to account for the goods to his own buyer, and a middleman who cannot state a provenance gets his price beaten down.
So I have been aiming at the wrong target for three days. I am not trying to convince someone who eats an apple. I am trying to make the trader who buys from me better armed when he resells than he would be holding anyone else's fruit.
He does not pay twenty fen more out of sympathy. He pays it because he can get fifty more downstream. — M.
Dongpo's Note
Foreign friend — I am a sabao, which in your language is nothing more than the man who keeps a foreign quarter in order. My people came from Samarkand and here we are all called Kang.
You asked why my benzoin fetches three bolts of silk when benzoin is sold in every ward of this city. Not scarcity. Everyone else's is cut with pine resin, which smells near enough and burns near enough, and no buyer alive can tell them apart. When a buyer cannot tell, he will not pay for the better one, and the man selling the better one starves. That is not a moral problem. It is a mechanical one, and it will hollow out any trade left to itself.
What I carry against it is a strip of leather with seven names on it — every hand between Persia and this market, each with its city and its month — and a last line saying that if the goods are adulterated, the seven answer together. It works not because it is written but because those seven have families in one lane, several hundred households, intermarried, and I am the man who conducts their rites and their disputes. The penalty for a false consignment is not money. No Sogdian trades with you again. Your daughter does not marry. Your son is not taught. You are not buried.
So the silk does not buy the resin. It buys the seven names.
Now hear the two things you came for.
The buyer cannot read my leather. He does not read Sogdian. He asks for it, turns it twice, hands it back. In a hundred buyers not one has ever traced it. The worth of it is not that he will check. It is that he could, at any hour, and I could not stop him. Your own Lord Shang wrote that a man without 验 is a man who cannot be lodged — and 验 has never meant a piece of paper. It means: subject to being checked.
And do not waste another day trying to prove your fruit is better. An apple is an apple; yours is sweet and the next village's is sweet, and the man biting into it cannot tell. Prove instead where it came from — whose hands, which day, how many days to the store, what temperature, who wrote it down. You already hold every one of those, and you did not recognise them because you were looking for a document instead of a record.
Last. The paper is not for the man who eats the fruit. He never asks. It is for the next hand — the trader, who must account to his own buyer, and who is beaten down on price whenever he cannot say where a thing came from. He will not pay you twenty fen more out of kindness. He will pay it because he can take fifty more downstream, and you must make that arithmetic obvious to him before he asks.
Marco's Memo
Memo to file. Western Market site, Xi'an. Night eighty-one.
Subject: where a premium actually comes from. Not quality — verifiability.
1. Three days wasted producing a provenance sheet that read: Luochuan / Red Fuji / Grade One. Two million mu in this province can print that. Discarded.
2. The benzoin case, which is a textbook lemons market described from the inside in the seventh century. Price 1 oz ≈ 3 bolts of silk. Not scarcity — the substance is sold in every ward. The competing supply is adulterated with pine resin, indistinguishable to any buyer by smell or burn. Buyers cannot verify → will not pay for quality → quality supply exits. Akerlof, 1300 years early, and the Sogdians had a working solution.
3. The solution: a leather strip listing every intermediary from Persia to Chang'an — seven names, each with city and month — closing with joint liability for adulteration.
Enforcement is not legal. Five of seven are Kang, two are Shi; all have households in one lane in Chang'an, intermarried, under the sabao's jurisdiction. Penalty for a bad consignment: permanent exclusion from Sogdian trade, no marriage for the daughter, no apprenticeship for the son, no burial. The bond is the community, and the document merely names who is inside it.
Restated: three bolts of silk do not buy resin. They buy seven names that can be ruined.
4. The key finding, and it corrects Shang Yang for me. The buyer cannot read the document — he does not read Sogdian. He requests it, glances, returns it. Perhaps one buyer in a hundred would ever trace the chain, and in practice none do.
The value is not that he checks. It is that he could check at any moment and the seller cannot prevent it.
验 in 舍人无验者坐之 is not "papers." It is "checkable." I have been reading that character as a noun for six weeks.
5. Strategic correction to the third gate. Stop trying to demonstrate superior fruit — undemonstrable, since the buyer bites one and cannot distinguish. Demonstrate provenance instead: grower, picking date, days to store, temperature curve, who kept the record, who was present at opening, sale date and price.
I already hold all of it. Qiang Lei has been recording temperature and humidity daily without being asked; Qiang Donglin's name is on the board; the six articles are cut in iron; Director Li is copying eleven years of daily prices for him and told him today that once copied it is no longer only his.
I spent three days in Xi'an trying to manufacture a document while my colleague in Luochuan was accumulating the actual record.
6. The distribution insight, which I would not have reached alone and which reframes the whole exercise. The document is not for the end consumer, who never asks. It is for the NEXT HAND. The middleman reads it because he must account to his own buyer, and a middleman who cannot state provenance is bargained down.
So the target is not the person eating an apple. The target is the trader at the wholesale market, and the pitch is not moral. It is: holding my fruit, you are better armed on resale than holding anyone else's. He pays twenty fen more to capture fifty downstream.
Action: going to the Zhuque wholesale market tonight, since it opens in the small hours, to find a trader. I have never in twelve years sold anything physical to anyone.

"Wherever profit lies, there is nowhere he will not go."
The Tang histories describe the men of Samarkand leaving home at twenty to trade, and the Sogdian communities of Chang'an were administered by an officer called the sabao — a foreign headman with an actual rank in the Tang bureaucracy, responsible for his community's rites, its disputes, and its commercial reputation.
The commercial problem they solved is one modern economics did not formalise until 1970. Benzoin from Persia sold at roughly an ounce for three bolts of silk — not because it was rare (it was sold in every ward of the city) but because most of the supply was cut with pine resin, which smells and burns close enough that no buyer could tell. Where buyers cannot verify, they will not pay for quality, and honest supply is driven out.
The Sogdian instrument against this was a strip of tanned leather naming every hand a consignment had passed through between Persia and Chang'an — seven names, each with city and month — and closing with a clause of joint liability for adulteration. Its force was not legal. Those seven had families in one lane, several hundred households, intermarried and under the sabao. The penalty for a false consignment was exclusion: no Sogdian would trade with you, your daughter would not marry, your son would not be taught, and you would not be buried.
The three bolts of silk did not buy the resin. They bought seven names that could be destroyed.
And the sharpest detail: the buyer could not read the document. He did not read Sogdian. He asked for it, turned it over, handed it back — and in a hundred buyers, none ever traced the chain. The worth of the thing was never that he would check. It was that he could, at any hour, and the seller could not prevent it.
Which is what the character 验 has always meant in the old legal formula a man without 验 may not be lodged: not "papers," but checkable.
