English Mirror: At the east gate of Luntai I sent you off, and as you went the snow filled the road over the Tianshan. The mountains turned, the road bent, and you were gone — leaving only the tracks of your horse on the snow.

First snow today, the dry horizontal kind that arrives in late October on the Luochuan plateau.

Morning: the cooperative office. Director Li shelled peanuts for two minutes without looking up and then asked the only question that matters: do you store your own.

Then he volunteered his own account before I could construct anything. Two winters ago he talked seven households into using the store and did not store himself. Reason: he farms four mu and his crop is his year's food, and the households he persuaded had eight to fifteen mu and — his words — could afford to lose. That is not greed. It is a man with four mu doing risk-capacity analysis on behalf of men with fifteen, and getting it wrong.

When it went bad they came to his door. One shouted at him for half an hour, and he did not answer, because the thing being shouted was correct: you told us to store, why didn't you.

And the sentence I have been carrying since the empty store — "if you're so clever, store your own fruit first" — turns out not to have been aimed at the growers at all. He said it to the cooperative's legal representative and the village secretary. The men who built it. Neither stored a single jin.

Five signatures on the acceptance certificate, and not one of them put fruit in the building.

He confirmed he is blocking Qiang Lei, and stated why without flinching: not because he opposes the store, but because he pushed seven households onto that ledge three years ago and will not push another. Then he apologised, unprompted, for having used the boy's father against him this morning, and immediately restated the substance: the sign goes up and the boy has no exit. I can fail here and leave. He fails here and cannot raise his head in that village for the rest of his life. I asked what happened when I failed at twenty-six. I changed firms. He said: you could change.

My answer to his question, which I had prepared last night at the window and which is not a good answer: I do not store, because I own nothing here. What I did instead was move ¥45,000 into the cooperative's own account yesterday evening — not a gift, a deposit against this winter's 50% advances, roughly 100,000 jin, eight or nine households. If February goes against us the money is gone and I put in another forty-five next year. It sits in their account, not mine. If I stop coming, it stays.

He held the transfer slip with his hands shaking and told me what it represents locally: eighteen months of one household's food.

Afternoon, walking up the plateau in the snow: Cen Shen, frostbite scar across one cheekbone, no hat.

On the famous couplet — as though a spring wind came in the night and opened pear blossom on ten thousand trees — he agreed it is good and then said he had not slept that night because the brazier went out, his feet were numb, and what he thought on stepping outside was: beautiful, and also, another day of this. Both at once.

Why he went, and he offered two versions. The one for posterity: service, merit, a man should carry a sword. The real one: he could not get anywhere in Chang'an. Passed the examination in 744, spent five years as an eighth-rank quartermaster officer, no movement, because the capital has ten qualified men for every post. Anxi was desperate. A man who could write official prose and was willing to go arrived as secretary to the military governor — a post he could not have reached in Chang'an in ten years.

So: not fortitude. Arithmetic. Go where you are scarce.

But the second half is harsher, and it is the part nobody quotes. He came back after three years with campaign merit and found he still had no position, because the merit belonged to Gao Xianzhi. He had drafted hundreds of victory dispatches and his name was on none of them. His warning: serve long enough on a frontier and you begin to assume the capital can see what you are doing. The capital sees the general's name and nothing else.

He went out a second time anyway. Not for a post. Because Feng Changqing knew him — because after three years there were several dozen people in Luntai who knew he wrote dispatches at midnight, that his face was frostbitten, which New Year he did not go home. In Chang'an nobody knew any of it.

Which is Qiang Lei exactly, inverted. Six years in Xi'an where nobody knows who he is; one plateau where everybody does.

And on the parting couplet — the mountains turn, the road bends, he is gone, and only the horse's tracks remain on the snow — he says most farewell poems are written about the one who leaves. His is about the hoofprints. The other man went home. The snow kept falling. The prints would be gone within the hour, and he had to stand there and watch them go.

I have been writing this whole trip from the position of the man riding out. Tonight is the first time I have thought about the one standing at the gate. — M.

Dongpo's Note

Foreign friend — Cen Shen. I wrote the snow poems and I will tell you what was actually happening while I wrote them.

The night of the pear-blossom line I did not sleep. The brazier went out, my feet lost feeling, and when I went out at dawn every tree in the camp was white and it was the most beautiful thing I had seen, and my next thought was that I would be cold again all day. Both were true at the same moment and neither cancels the other. Do not let anyone tell you a man in a hard place is either suffering or transported. He is both, in the same breath, every morning.

You asked why I went, and I gave you two answers because there are two. The one for posterity is service and glory. The true one is that I passed the examination in 744 and spent five years as a minor quartermaster because Chang'an had ten qualified men for every post and I was not first in any queue. Anxi was short of everyone. A man who could draft official prose and was willing to go became secretary to the military governor on arrival — a position ten years out of reach in the capital.

That is not courage. It is arithmetic. Go where you are scarce. Anyone who tells a young man to take the hard posting for the sake of his character is lying to him; tell him instead where he is rare.

But learn the second half too, because it cost me three years. I came home with the campaign behind me and no post, because the merit belonged to Gao Xianzhi. I had written several hundred victory dispatches and my name appeared on none of them. Serve on a frontier long enough and you start to believe the capital can see you. The capital sees the general.

I went out a second time all the same, and not for a title. Because Feng Changqing knew what I was. Three years in one place makes several dozen men who know that you write at midnight, that your face is frostbitten, which New Year you did not go home. Chang'an knew none of that. Luntai knew all of it. A man will go back to the cold for that, and will not go back for money.

Last, since you are the one standing at a gate now. Most parting poems are about the man riding away. Mine ends on the hoofprints — the mountains turn, the road bends, he is gone, and the snow is still coming down and the tracks will be gone within the hour, and I am the one who has to stand and watch them fill in.

You have spent this whole journey imagining yourself as the rider. Tonight two men in that courtyard put their names down in a place they cannot leave. Work out which one of the three of you is the rider.

Marco's Memo

Memo to file. Cooperative office, then the plateau in snow, then the Qiang courtyard. Night seventy-eight.

Subject: who goes to the frontier — and who is left standing at the gate.

1. Director Li's question, asked before I finished my pitch: do you store your own. It is the same question I arrived at by myself at the window last night, which means it is the real one.

2. His disclosure, unprompted. Two winters ago he persuaded seven households and did not store himself. He farms four mu; his crop is the family's food; the households he persuaded held eight to fifteen mu and in his judgement could absorb a loss. A man with four mu underwriting the risk tolerance of men with fifteen — wrongly. Not venality. Bad analysis performed sincerely, which is worse, because there is no one to blame.

3. Correction to a fact I have been building on for four days. "Store your own fruit first" was not addressed to the growers. He said it to the cooperative's legal representative and the village secretary. The builders. Neither stored a jin.

So: five signatures on the acceptance certificate, five people who never used the asset, and the seven who did use it were the only ones with money at risk. That is the whole failure in one line, and it is not a market failure.

4. He confirms he is blocking Qiang Lei and gave a reason I cannot argue with: he pushed seven households onto a ledge three years ago and will not push another. Then apologised for using the boy's father against him, and immediately restated the substance — I can fail and leave, the boy fails and cannot raise his head in that village for life. At twenty-six I failed and changed firms. His verdict: you could change.

5. Action, executed last night, disclosed this morning. ¥45,000 into the cooperative's own account. Not a gift — a standing fund for this winter's 50% advances, ~100,000 jin, eight or nine households. Losses not clawed back; replenished next year. Held in their account. If I stop coming it stays. He told me it equals eighteen months of one household's food, and his hands shook holding the slip.

6. Cen Shen, on the plateau, in snow. The two versions of why he went to Anxi. Public: duty and glory. Actual: five years stuck at eighth rank because Chang'an had ten men per post, while Anxi was short of everyone, and a literate man willing to go arrived as secretary to the military governor. Go where you are scarce. Not fortitude — scarcity.

7. The correction that hurts. He returned with the campaign behind him and still had no position, because the merit belonged to the general. Hundreds of dispatches, his name on none. Frontier service creates the illusion that the centre can see you. The centre sees the general's name.

8. Why he went out a second time: not rank. Feng Changqing knew him. Three years in one place produces several dozen people who know he wrote at midnight and that his face was frostbitten. Chang'an knew none of it.

Which is Qiang Lei inverted and I should have seen it a week ago. Six years in Xi'an, unknown to anyone. One plateau where every person knows exactly who he is. The pull is not money. It is being legible.

9. Evening, the courtyard, and I lost control of the situation in the best possible way.

Qiang Donglin asked how many years I intend to stay. I said I don't know, which is true. His response: then you cannot cut his name. Not hostile — he called the six articles the clearest contract he has seen. His point: the sign is iron and stays on the wall; I am not, and I leave.

Then he produced a passbook. He withdrew ¥20,000 this morning and is declining my 50% advance, and his reason dismantles my entire instrument: if I use your money, this storage is your affair; if I use mine, it is mine.

Every mechanism I designed this week was aimed at removing risk from the first mover. He has just told me the risk is the point. The advance would have bought him safety at the cost of ownership, and he has been unable to make a decision for three years precisely because he lost ownership of the last one.

I have never once, in twelve years of structuring, met a counterparty who refused downside protection in order to keep the decision.

10. And then he told his son to cut the name — because as of this morning he also has no exit, and the two of them will have none together.

Cen Shen's closing point applies. I have been picturing myself as the man riding out. Both of them just signed something in a place they cannot leave. I am the one at the gate watching the tracks fill in.

English Highlight

"The mountains turn, the road bends, and you are gone — leaving only the tracks of your horse on the snow."
Cen Shen served two tours on the northwestern frontier, at Anxi under Gao Xianzhi and at Beiting under Feng Changqing, and produced the most famous winter lines in Chinese poetry — including the image of snow arriving overnight as though a spring wind had opened pear blossom on ten thousand trees.
His own account of that morning is less exalted. The brazier had gone out, he had not slept, his feet were numb, and stepping outside he thought two things simultaneously: that it was beautiful, and that he would be cold again all day.
On why he went at all, he offers two versions. The one for posterity is service and merit. The actual one is that he passed the examinations in 744 and spent five years stalled at eighth rank, because Chang'an held ten qualified candidates for every post, while the frontier was short of everyone — and a man who could draft official prose and was willing to go arrived as secretary to the military governor, a position a decade out of reach in the capital. Not fortitude. Scarcity.
The harder half is what happened next. He returned with a campaign behind him and still had no position, because the merit belonged to the general; he had written hundreds of victory dispatches and his name was on none of them. Serve far enough out, he warns, and you begin to assume the centre can see you. The centre sees the general.
He went back anyway — not for rank, but because after three years several dozen people at Luntai knew he wrote at midnight, knew his face was frostbitten, knew which New Year he had not gone home. Chang'an knew none of it.
And the parting couplet is not about the man leaving. It is about the hoofprints: the snow keeps falling, the tracks will be gone within the hour, and the poet is the one who must stand and watch them fill in.
