English Mirror: This feeling could have been something to remember later — except that even at the time, I was already lost in it.

The iron sign came back this afternoon. Half a man's height, ten kilos, cut characters with the swarf still in the grooves. Six articles and two lines at the bottom — mine, and Qiang Lei's.

And then Qiang Lei told me that Li, the cooperative director who stood outside that store two winters ago and said "if you're so clever, store your own fruit first," had come to see him this morning. What Li said to him was not a threat. It was: you've put your name on the sign — have you thought about the fact that your father still lives in this village.

I could not write the proposal document tonight. I sat in front of a blank file for half an hour and Li Shangyin was in the other chair when I looked up.

He wants it understood that the poems were his evening work. His profession — several thousand documents over a lifetime — was drafting memorials for military governors. Three constituencies per document: his patron, who needs the thing granted without appearing to beg; the official in the capital, who needs to feel that approving it creates no liability for him; and the person who will pull the file out five years from now if it goes wrong. His formulation: the hard part is not satisfying the reader today, it is leaving nothing for the one who reopens it in five years to say.

Three rules, given without much ceremony:

One. Put the hardest clause in the least conspicuous place, plainly, with no explanation. The more you justify a term the more certain everyone becomes that something is buried in it. My article three — losses not clawed back — I had drafted with two sentences of rationale attached. Deleting them.

Two. Everything you want must be written as their benefit — and he was scathing about my draft line, "this proposal will activate an idle asset," which is written from the position of an outsider evaluating a resource. His version: the store has been empty three years and the members are unhappy; this gives the directors something to show them. His principle: nobody agrees to a thing because it is good. They agree because it resolves something that is currently causing them pain.

Three. The document should name no individuals, whereas the iron sign must, because the sign is read by villagers who need to know who is accountable and the document is read upward — and upward, a name is not read as what a person did. It is read as whose person he is.

Then his own life, offered because I asked about Qiang Lei.

Linghu Chu — a chief minister — noticed him at sixteen, taught him the parallel-prose memorial style personally, character by character, funded his studies alongside his own sons, and backed his examination. He passed in 837 with the son, Linghu Tao, speaking for him. Linghu Chu died that winter. The following year he married the daughter of Wang Maoyuan, of the opposing faction.

I asked whether he knew what that would cost. He said yes. He was twenty-six, his father had died young, the family had been poor for years, he had lived on other men's charity for over a decade, and a man who valued him offered him a daughter. Then he asked me what he should have done, and I had nothing.

What followed: the Niu faction called him ungrateful and unprincipled; Linghu Tao never forgave him, refused to receive him even after becoming chief minister, and locked the room where he had written a poem on the wall. And the Li faction would not use him either — because he was Linghu Chu's student.

He did not pick the wrong side. Both sides counted him as belonging to the other.

The rest was secretarial work in provincial headquarters — Guilin, Xuzhou, and finally Zizhou in Sichuan, four years, his wife already dead, writing the best official prose of his life by day and the Untitled poems at night because there was nothing else to do in the evenings.

On Cui Jue's famous couplet — that he bore a talent to touch the clouds and never once opened his heart's ambition — he said it was well written and that it is what the living say about the dead. He never thought in those terms himself. He thought about tomorrow's memorial, which was not finished. His line: a man does not have a "whole life" while he is living it. He has tomorrow. Forty-five years, lived one day at a time, each day writing one specific document for one specific reader — some well, some badly.

He would not tell me whether to cut Qiang Lei's name. He said he had never solved it either.

What he gave me instead: if the name goes on, the boy is tied to me — everything I do in this county from now on, good and bad, is partly his. His father is here, his uncles are here, he will marry here. What I can offer is a possible future. What Li the director can impose starts tomorrow morning. Those two things are not on the same clock.

And then, walking out: don't ask him whether he's willing. He'll say yes — he rode all night four days ago. Ask him whether his father knows. — M.

Dongpo's Note

Foreign friend — Li Shangyin. I will be plain, because I spent my life being anything but.

The poems you know were written in the evenings, in other men's houses, after the day's work. The day's work was several thousand official documents, and that was my trade. Every one of them had three readers: the patron, who needed the thing granted without appearing to ask; the official in the capital, who needed to feel that signing it created no exposure for him; and whoever would retrieve the file five years later if it went wrong. The last of the three is the one that governs the drafting.

Three rules and then my own case, which is what you actually asked for.

Put the hardest clause somewhere unremarkable and do not explain it. Explanation is what tells a reader something is buried. Write what you want as what they gain — and not as a benefit in the abstract, but as relief from whatever is currently troubling them, because no one acts on merit, they act on discomfort. And keep every individual's name out of the document, though you must put names on the iron, because villagers read a name as accountability and offices read a name as affiliation.

Now the part you wanted. Linghu Chu found me at sixteen and taught me the memorial style himself, character by character, and paid for my studies alongside his own sons, and his son spoke for me at the examination. He died that winter. The next year I married Wang Maoyuan's daughter, and Wang was of the other faction.

I knew what it would cost. I was twenty-six. My father had died early, we had been poor a long time, I had lived more than a decade on other men's floors, and a man who thought well of me offered me his daughter. You may tell me what I should have done, and no one in twelve hundred years has managed it.

What followed is not that I chose the wrong side. It is that each side counted me as the other's. The Niu called me ungrateful; Linghu Tao would not see me for the rest of his life and locked the room where I left a poem on his wall. And the Li faction would not employ me either — because I was Linghu Chu's student. There is no correction available for that position. There is only work, in one provincial headquarters after another, and I did the work well.

So on your young man. I will not tell you whether to cut his name, because I never solved it for myself. But understand the asymmetry you are asking him to accept: what you are offering him is a future that may exist, and what the director can impose on him begins tomorrow morning. His father is in that village. His uncles are in that village. He will marry there.

And do not ask him whether he is willing. He rode all night four days ago; he will say yes.

Ask him whether his father knows.

Marco's Memo

Memo to file. Rented flat, Luochuan. Night seventy-seven.

Subject: coalition risk. What it costs the person I recruit, on their clock rather than mine.

1. The sign is finished. Ten kilos, cut not printed, six articles and two attributions. It is currently propped against my wall and is not going up.

2. Director Li — the man who told the village two winters ago to store their own fruit if they were so clever — approached Qiang Lei this morning. Not with a threat. With a fact: your name is on that sign, and your father still lives in this village.

It is the most efficient thing anyone has said to me in this province. Twenty-two characters, no accusation, and it stops the whole project.

3. Li Shangyin on drafting, which I needed today and would not have thought to ask for. Three constituencies per document — the patron, the approver, and whoever reopens the file in five years — and the third governs. Hard clauses go in plainly and unexplained, because explanation is what signals something buried; I had attached two sentences of rationale to article three and have deleted them. Wants written as their relief, not their benefit: my draft line about "activating an idle asset" is written from an outsider's chair, and his rewrite — the store has stood empty three years and the members are unhappy, this gives the directors something to show them — is the same request from inside their problem. And no personal names in the upward document, because upward a name is not read as what a man did but as whose man he is.

4. His own case, and the reason he told it. Linghu Chu found him at sixteen, taught him the trade personally, funded him, and had his son back him at the examination. Linghu Chu died that winter; the following year he married into the opposing faction and was ruined by both. Niu called him ungrateful. Li would not use him because he was Linghu Chu's student. Thirty years of provincial secretarial work, ending in Sichuan.

He knew the cost in advance and did it anyway, at twenty-six, poor, having lived on other men's charity for a decade, because someone who valued him offered him a daughter. He asked me what he should have done and I had no answer and I do not think there is one.

5. The correction to my own framing. Ban Chao taught me to know every face; Zhang Qian that I cannot predict who stays; Gong Kai to watch who signs first. All three are about how I select. None of them costs the person selected anything.

Li Shangyin is the first to state the other side of the ledger: what I am offering Qiang Lei is a future that may exist, and what Director Li can impose on him starts tomorrow. Different clocks. In New York, taking a job means changing offices. Here, taking a side means living on the same street with the same people for the rest of your life.

6. Action taken, 22:00. Did not accept his consent tonight. Sign stays off the wall until the day his father stores, which is next week and which the whole village will know about. If he still wants it then, we hang it. If not, I grind off the second line and keep the first, and I administer the store myself for as long as I keep coming back.

Note on why. He would have said yes tonight, and I would then have been the mirror image of Director Li — Li leveraging his father against him, me leveraging his own enthusiasm. Same instrument, opposite direction.

7. Also: his father does not know his name is on the sign. Qiang Lei has not told him, because he is afraid of being refused.

8. And the thing I noticed at the window, which I do not know what to do with. Of Director Li's two ugly sentences, the first one is correct. The people who urged others to use that store did not use it themselves.

I am currently urging Qiang Donglin to be the first to store.

I have not stored anything.

"This feeling could have been something to remember later — except that even at the time, I was already lost in it."
Li Shangyin passed the examinations in 837 with the backing of Linghu Tao, son of the chief minister Linghu Chu, who had discovered him at sixteen, taught him the parallel-prose memorial style personally, and paid for his education alongside his own sons. Linghu Chu died that winter. The following year Li married the daughter of Wang Maoyuan, of the rival faction.
He said, without softening it, that he knew what it would cost. He was twenty-six, his father had died young, the family had been poor for a decade, and a man who valued him had offered him a daughter.
What ruined him was not choosing the wrong side. Both sides counted him as belonging to the other. The Niu faction called him ungrateful; Linghu Tao refused to receive him for the rest of his life and locked the room where Li had written a poem on the wall. The Li faction would not employ him because he was Linghu Chu's student. There is no move available from that square.
He spent the remainder of his life as a secretary in provincial headquarters — Guilin, Xuzhou, and finally Zizhou in Sichuan, where his wife was already dead and he wrote the Untitled poems in the evenings because the days were spent on other men's official prose.
Of Cui Jue's celebrated epitaph — he bore a talent to touch the clouds, and never once opened his heart's ambition — he remarked only that it was well written, and that it is what the living say about the dead. He never thought in those terms. He thought about tomorrow's memorial, which was not finished. A man does not have a "whole life" while he is living it. He has tomorrow.
