English Mirror: Her elder brother Gu had been composing the History of Han. He died before completing the eight tables and the Treatise on Astronomy. Emperor He ordered Zhao to go to the Eastern Pavilion library and finish it.

County archive, Luochuan, in a windowless outbuilding that smells of old paper, camphor, and dust. Forty years of this county's records on iron shelves and nobody comes.

Found the cold store project file. Seventeen pages, 2021. Every number sourced, every procedure complete, no fabrication anywhere. The benefits page projects 1.8 million yuan of additional annual income across three hundred households — six thousand each. Actual first year: seven depositors, all of whom lost money. Acceptance certificate on the last page. Result: passed. Five signatures.

Five names, which is the same as none. Gong Kai told me that two nights ago about seven signatures on a contract and I did not expect to be reading it off a government form so soon.

What I sat with in that room: nobody did anything wrong. Nobody lied. The building was built and works. And it has been empty three years. This is not corruption. It is a completely correct process producing a thing that does not stand up.

Ban Zhao appeared among the shelves carrying an armload of bamboo strips, and her first question was one I could not answer: are those five signatories still in this county? Her reasoning: a thing usually fails not because the people who signed were wrong, but because the day after signing, they left.

Her own subject. Her father Ban Biao began the History of Han and died unfinished. Her brother Ban Gu continued it for over twenty years and died in prison at sixty-one, implicated in the Dou Xian affair. Missing at his death: the eight tables and the Treatise on Astronomy. Emperor He sent her to the Eastern Pavilion to finish it.

She cannot say how long it took, because there was no day on which she began. A cartload of strips arrived and she spent more than two years simply laying them out to establish where he had got to.

And then the thing that reorganised my week. Half of what he left had no conclusions attached — archives copied, people interviewed, competing accounts recorded, and no indication of which he believed. It was research material, not a manuscript. So she had to decide, which means the judgements in the finished tables are hers. The book is signed by her brother.

I asked whether that was unfair and she declined the frame entirely. What she said instead: the Han Shu was hard to read when it was finished — archaic diction, a novel structure nobody had used before — so the emperor had her teach it. Ma Rong, who became the most eminent classicist of the age, sat below her reading-stand to receive it. His students knew who had written the tables. They said nothing about it. They learned the book and taught it to others.

On the store: they handed it to the cooperative. Her verdict — handing a thing to a group is handing it to nobody. Hand it to one person who will finish it.

How to recognise that person, and this is the most useful selection criterion anyone has given me: the one who will finish it goes back and redoes the part the previous person left undone, rather than starting from the part he himself finds interesting. Which costs two years with nothing to show. Most people cannot tolerate those two years.

So I am revising what I am looking for in this county. Not competence — competence is teachable. Someone willing to go back over the last three years.

Then the connection I did not see coming. I asked why she agreed to write, and she answered with a different brother. In 102 CE Ban Chao, at seventy, petitioned to come home and was ignored. She submitted a memorial: he is seventy, his hair has no black in it, his hands have no feeling, he cannot see or hear well, he walks with a stick — and, at the end, Beg for what remains of his years; let him come back alive and see the palace gates once more.

It was granted. He reached Luoyang and died a month later.

I asked if one month was worth it. She said he thought so, because he died in Luoyang and not in the Western Regions. And on his return he told her: I will never write a book. You write it for me.

She did — not the biography itself, which Fan Ye composed three centuries later, but the materials he composed it from.

Which means the account of the thirty-six men that Ban Chao told me in my rented flat exists because his sister preserved it after she had already spent two decades finishing their brother's book under their brother's name. — M.

Dongpo's Note

Foreign friend — Ban Zhao. They called me Cao Dagu, after my husband's family; I was widowed young and spent my life among other people's unfinished work.

My father began the History of Han and died. My brother Gu continued it for twenty years and died in prison at sixty-one. What arrived at my house was a cart of bamboo strips, and I spent more than two years doing nothing but laying them out to find where he had stopped.

Half of it had no conclusions. He had copied the archives, questioned the survivors, recorded the competing accounts — and never written down which he believed. So the judgements in the eight tables are mine. The book carries his name.

You wanted me to call that unjust. I will not, and not out of modesty. When it was finished nobody could read it — the diction was old, the form was new — so I was sent to teach it, and Ma Rong sat below my stand to receive it, and his pupils knew perfectly well whose hand the tables were. They said nothing. They learned the book, and taught it to others, and that is the only outcome I was ever working toward.

Your project file has five signatures and an empty building, and I asked the only question worth asking: where are those five men now. You have since found out. One promoted, one retired, one reassigned, one voted out, one in Guangdong. Nothing was falsified and nothing was left standing. A thing does not usually fail because the signatories were wrong. It fails because the morning after they sign, they are somewhere else.

You handed it to a cooperative, which is to say you handed it to no one. Give it to one person who will finish it — and here is how to know him. He goes back and redoes the part the last man left undone, instead of starting where his own interest lies. That costs two years with nothing to show for them, and most people cannot bear those two years. It is the whole test.

One more thing, since you asked why I agreed to write at all. My other brother spent thirty-one years in the Western Regions and petitioned at seventy to be allowed home, and no one answered. So I wrote: his hair has no black left in it, his hands have no feeling, he walks with a stick — I beg for what remains of his years, that he may return alive and see the palace gates. It was granted. He reached Luoyang and died within the month, and he counted that a good trade, because he died at home.

He said to me: I will never write a book, you write it for me. The life you heard from him in your rented room survives because I kept the papers, and a man three centuries later made them into a chapter with his own name on it.

None of this troubles me and I want you to understand why. A thing that must carry your name in order for you to finish it is a thing you were never really doing.

Marco's Memo

Memo to file. Luochuan county archive. Night seventy-six.

Subject: succession, and why the store has no owner.

1. Project file, 2021, seventeen pages. Nothing falsified. Every figure sourced, every procedure complete. Projected benefit: ¥1.8m annually across 300 households. Actual: seven depositors in year one, all loss-making. Acceptance: passed. Five signatures.

This is the cleanest example I have ever handled of a fully compliant process producing an asset that does not stand up. No villain. No error. An empty building.

2. Ban Zhao's question, which I could not answer and have now answered: where are the five signatories today. One promoted to the municipality, one retired, one reassigned within the agriculture bureau, one voted out as village secretary, one relocated to Guangdong. Three years, five signatures, zero still in post.

Restated for my own use: the file records who approved it and contains no record of who owns it afterward. Approval and ownership are different functions and our documentation conflates them. Every subsidised asset I have ever seen has an approval trail and no succession trail.

3. Her case. Father began the Han Shu and died; brother Gu continued twenty-odd years and died in prison; the eight tables and the astronomy treatise were unfinished. She received a cart of strips and spent over two years just laying them out to locate the stopping point.

Half the material had no conclusions — sources gathered, verdicts never recorded. Research notes, not a manuscript. So the judgements in the completed tables are hers, and the work is signed by her brother. She declines to treat this as a grievance, and her reason is operational rather than saintly: the objective was that the book be read, and it is read.

4. The selection criterion, and it is the best one I have been given on this trip: whoever will actually finish a thing goes back and redoes the part his predecessor left undone, instead of starting where his own interest lies. Cost: roughly two years with no output. Most candidates cannot tolerate that period, and it is invisible in any interview.

Revising my search accordingly. I have been looking for capability. Capability is teachable. I should be looking for someone willing to re-walk the last three years of this village's failure before proposing anything.

5. The Ban Chao connection. Her memorial of 102 CE secured his return after his own petitions were ignored; he reached Luoyang and died within a month. She reports he considered it worth it, because he died at home. And on returning he told her: I will never write a book, you write it for me. Fan Ye composed the biography three centuries later from materials she preserved.

The account of the thirty-six men that I recorded four nights ago exists because of an unsigned act of preservation by a woman who had already spent twenty years finishing another man's book under his name.

6. Action, taken on the phone at 20:40. The iron sign will now carry two lines instead of one. Line one: these six articles were set by Marco. Line two: this store, from the winter of this year, is administered by Qiang Lei.

His first question when I raised the possibility was not compensation. It was: if it fails, whose is it — will the village say it was yours or mine.

He asked to have his name cut into the metal before he asked what he would be paid. Gong Kai's wet clay again, and this time it was the twenty-six-year-old who reached for the stylus.

"Her brother Gu died before completing the eight tables and the Treatise on Astronomy. The Emperor ordered Zhao to go to the Eastern Pavilion and finish it."
The History of Han was begun by Ban Biao, continued for over twenty years by his son Ban Gu — who died in prison at sixty-one — and completed by his daughter Ban Zhao. It is signed by Ban Gu.
She could not say how long her portion took, because there was no day on which she began. A cart of bamboo strips arrived and she spent more than two years simply laying them out to establish where her brother had stopped. Then the discovery that defines the work: half of what he left carried no conclusions. He had copied the archives, interviewed survivors, and recorded rival accounts without ever noting which he believed. It was research material, not a manuscript.
So the judgements in the eight tables are hers. She declines to call the attribution unjust, and her reason is practical rather than modest. The finished book was nearly unreadable — archaic diction, an unprecedented structure — so she was sent to teach it, and Ma Rong, later the foremost classicist of the age, sat below her stand to receive it. His pupils knew whose hand the tables were. They said nothing, learned the book, and taught it onward, which was the entire objective.
Her test for who can be trusted to finish another person's work is the most useful thing in the passage: the one who will finish goes back and redoes what his predecessor left undone, rather than starting from the part he finds interesting. That costs roughly two years with nothing to show, and most people cannot bear it.
She also wrote the memorial that brought her other brother Ban Chao home from thirty-one years in the Western Regions — I beg for what remains of his years, that he may return alive — and he died in Luoyang within the month, and counted it a fair trade.
