English Mirror: Xun Xu understood music well; people of the time called his gift a hidden understanding. So he tuned the pitch pipes and set the court music in order. — Ruan Xian was a subtle listener; people called his gift an inspired understanding. Whenever music was played at court gatherings he felt in his heart that it was out of tune. He never said a word to Xun Xu directly, but Xun resented him, and had him sent out to be governor of Shiping. — Later a farmer ploughing his field dug up a jade ruler of the Zhou dynasty, the true standard ruler of the realm. Xun used it to check the bells and drums, the bronze and stone, the strings and pipes he had made, and found them all short by one grain of millet. Then he acknowledged Ruan's inspired judgement. — In this month, when day and night are of equal length, make the measures uniform, adjust the balances and weights, align the dou and yong measures, and correct the steelyards and levelling sticks.

Tenth of March, 2038, a Wednesday, nine in the morning, Turpan. The same main room, the same table, a white cloth, a white kitchen scale reading to a tenth of a gram, Guli at one end with the book open at 2038, only the date written. Four sewn bags in the cabinet, pressed together a year ago by the old man's left hand: 2031, 2035, and the two halves of 2036. On the doorframe last year's two strings, five months hanging, to be divided today. Abdurehman in his chair, sheepskin hat off on his knees, had watched the scale since he came in. Three years ago, the same day, the same room: the 2031 half, 95.8. Last year 95.8; he wrote "steady." I know what this bag is: in July 2031 he had his stroke; that year's bunch is from his last working year; the cabinet half is still as it was the year of the stroke. Five years ago Alim promised: we won't touch it; every year you're here, we'll weigh it. He touched the back of my hand: the deal is made.
At ten past nine Alim levelled the scale: 0.0; a second later 0.1; back to 0.0. He zeroed it. "Changed the battery in January. A cheap one from the town." A slit in the 2031 bag, the raisins poured onto the pan, the number settled: 95.9. The room went silent. Guli's pen stopped above the page. A bag unmoved for two years had gained a tenth of a gram. Aynur, very quietly: damp? Nobody answered. My heart sank. A thing that should not move had moved. At the door stood a thin, long-faced man in a dark robe and tall cap with a long wooden case. "Don't believe it yet." Xun Xu; he had charge of music under the Jin. In the case: bronze pitch pipes and a bronze ruler. The court music was tuned to his set and all agreed it was right; one listener, Ruan Xian, felt it was off and never said so; Xun resented it and had him posted away. Years later a farmer ploughed up a Zhou jade ruler, the true standard. "Checked against it, all my instruments were short by one grain of millet. A deaf ear would never hear it in a lifetime. He heard it. I admitted he was right."
Then the old man's left hand pointed at the window: dry yard, no trace of snow; not one snowfall in Turpan all winter. A bag in a dry winter can only lose water, not gain it. He wrote one character: scale, and tapped it twice. Alim emptied the pan: 0.0, 0.1, 0.0, 0.1. The empty scale jumping by itself. But how much does it add with a load? Nothing in the house had a known weight. Aynur: the gold shop in town; its scale is inspected every year. Ekber, forty-odd, spectacles, said nothing clever: a scale reading to two decimals under glass, "inspected and passed" with a red stamp; first, from a drawer, a brass 100-gram weight. "Every morning I weigh this first. If it's right, I weigh gold." 100.00. Then the bag: 95.81. Not moved. Alim poured it back with shaking hands. On our kitchen scale the brass weight read 100.1, 100.0, 100.1: "Its zero isn't steady. You're weighing tenths, and it's off by a tenth." At home Alim knelt by his father and said one number; the old man touched the back of his hand and wrote: still steady. — M.
Memo to file. Turpan, 10 March 2038. Checking the ruler.
1. The bag. The 2031 cabinet half: the year of his stroke, his last working year. 95.8 in 2036 and 2037; "steady." Alim's promise: every year you're here, we weigh it.
2. The reading. New cheap battery in January; empty scale flickering 0.0 / 0.1; zeroed; 95.9. Silence; Guli's pen stopped. Aynur: damp? A thing that should not move had moved.
3. The precedent. Xun Xu tuned the Jin court's pipes, bells and strings; everyone approved. Ruan Xian heard they were off and said nothing; Xun had him sent away. A farmer dug up a Zhou jade ruler, the true standard: every instrument short by one grain of millet. "He heard it. I admitted he was right." And the old calendar: at the spring equinox, unify the measures, adjust balances and weights.
4. The old man's reasoning. He pointed at the window: no snow all winter, the room dry enough to hurt the throat. A sealed bag in a dry winter can lose water, not gain it. It cannot be heavier. He wrote: scale. Alim watched the empty pan: 0.1, 0.0, 0.1, jumping on its own.
5. A known weight. Guli: if it jumps empty, we can't tell how much it adds with a load; we need something whose weight we know. Nothing in the house qualified: a bag of salt marked 500 g is approximate; coins wear. Aynur: the gold shop, inspected yearly.
6. The gold shop. Ekber's scale under glass, two decimals, "inspected and passed," valid to year's end. First his brass 100 g weight: "Every morning I weigh this first. If it's right, I weigh gold." 100.00. Then: 2031 half 95.81. Not moved. 2035 half 12.53; 2036 left 21.12; right 19.68.
7. Our scale on his weight. 100.1, 100.0, 100.1. "Its zero isn't steady; the battery, or not recalibrated after changing it. For most things it doesn't matter. You weigh tenths, and it's off by a tenth." One grain of millet; a tenth of a gram. To this family a tenth of a gram is whether that bag is still the year of the stroke.
8. Still steady. Alim knelt and said the number. The old man touched the back of his hand, then wrote: still steady. Guli: "10 March 2038. 95.8." Below: home scale 95.9; battery changed in January, zero unsteady; at Ekber's gold shop, 100 g weight first, 100.00; then 95.81. Not moved.
9. The back pages. On 2033 through 2037 she added in the margin: "No reference weight weighed this year. Whether the scale was right: unknown." On 2036: "Battery changed 2035; 2036 and 2037 the same battery; these two years are comparable with each other." Like Eli's card in Kuqa: 1985, date sealed, unknown. Written as unknown, not as a guess.
10. The scale's own mark. Ekber gave his old 100 g weight, recalibrated last month, with its certificate, free. Alim put in a good battery, levelled, zeroed, waited a minute: 0.0, steady. Weight: 100.0, three times. Guli: reference weight first, 100.0, three times. Then the strings: left 22.4, right 20.7; "2037, house three, Alim by day / Aynur by night; divided 10 March 2038, not late"; and below, "reference weight first, 100.0." Six bags into the cabinet and the little wooden box beside them; the old man's left hand nudged the box against the bags.
11. The line. Xun Xu rebuilt his pipes to the jade ruler, "but I keep thinking: if every year I'd checked my ruler against something that doesn't change, I wouldn't have needed a farmer to dig up a jade ruler, or to send away the man who heard it." "A ruler short by one grain is the ruler's fault. Sending away the man who said so was mine. When a thing that can't move moves, suspect the ruler first, then the thing, and last of all the person who spoke up." The Wall Street version: after a system upgrade a long-dormant holding rose a hair every day; a new junior asked how a thing that doesn't trade can rise; a zero had been set wrong and everything was overstated by a hair. On live positions nobody could see it; on a dead one it showed. That bag doesn't move, so it's the best ruler in the house.
12. Next. Eleven o'clock, the printer in Chengdu: the fifth edition's cover proof on his table, a row of names in three lines. First, six shaking left-handed characters: Abdurehman. In the middle, one traced three times: Lin Xiufen. Last of the last line, photographed from a letter, square and level: Han Lixin. "The cover's complete. The last page, you still haven't given me."

"He checked the instruments he had made against it, and found them all short by one grain of millet."
Xun Xu, a scholar-official of the Jin dynasty, reformed the court's musical pitch with a new set of pipes and a standard ruler. The musician Ruan Xian privately heard that the tuning was off; Xun, offended, had him posted to the provinces. Years later a farmer ploughed up an ancient jade ruler, accepted as the true standard, and Xun found that everything he had made was short by the width of a single millet grain. He acknowledged that Ruan had been right.
The story contains two separate lessons. The first is that instruments drift, often by amounts too small for anyone to notice in ordinary use, and that the only defence is a reference standard checked regularly: the jeweller's brass weight weighed every morning before any gold. The ancient calendar even named a season for it, the spring equinox, when weights and measures were to be made uniform.
The second is about the order of suspicion. When something that should not change appears to change, check the ruler before believing the thing, and do not punish the person who first noticed. Past readings taken without a reference should be marked honestly as unverified, with a note of which ones can at least be compared with each other.
"A ruler short by one grain is the ruler's fault. Sending away the man who said so was mine."
