English Mirror: Whoever brought a Song-printed book, the master of the house paid by the leaf, two hundred cash for each leaf; for an old manuscript copy, forty cash a leaf. — And so the book-boats of Huzhou gathered like clouds at the Mao family's gate by the Seven Stars Bridge. — The townsfolk had a saying for it: of all the three hundred and sixty trades, none beats selling books to the Maos.
底下一行:「Grandma says her R looks like a vine. She says that's fine. It is one.」

Seventeenth of March, 2038, a Wednesday, ten in the morning, Chengdu. Zhong's print works at the end of an old street in the north of the city: machines roaring downstairs, ink and paper in the air; upstairs a small room, one big table, and on it the cover proof of the fifth edition. A year and a half ago the fourth edition came off these presses, five hundred copies, and under the title three characters: recorded by Marco. Today under the title, three lines of names. First, handwritten, six shaking characters: Abdurehman. In the first line, also by hand, Uyghur above Chinese: Aynur, who saw the old man's card and insisted on writing her own, two days of it. In the second line, in a hand like wind-blown grass: Rose Kazarian, ninety-two, a morning and six spoiled sheets. Near the end of the second line, traced three times: Lin Xiufen. Last of the third line, photographed from a letter: Han Lixin. The rest in identical type. "Thirty years printing and never a cover like it. The typesetter asked if mixing hands and type looked messy. I said: messy. Don't touch it."
Reading name by name, I stopped. Agent Luo. Master Gu, Master Chen, Master Feng, Big Xu. Team-leader Pan. "Aynur's mother." And the new ones: Apa. Sister Liu. Little Xu. Uncle Kurban. Not names: what people are called. "Agent" is a post at the buying station; master and team leader are what the workshop calls them; Sister Liu is what He Yuan calls his aunt; Apa is what the sorting table has called an older woman for thirty years. "Her mother" is Aynur's mother. Not one name among them. Last October under the trellis I wrote them down as I say them. I didn't notice a thing. Footsteps on the stairs: a slight man of fifty-odd in a blue gown with a bundle of brittle yellow leaves under his arm, who traced Abdurehman's characters in the air above the paper without touching. "A good base text, this edition." Mao Jin, of Changshu; he printed books. He bought Song editions by the leaf: two hundred cash a leaf, forty for an old manuscript, twelve hundred where others offered a thousand; the Huzhou book-boats crowded under the bridge at his gate. "Why by the leaf? A book missing one leaf isn't that book. Every leaf counts."
Six hundred-odd titles, and at the end of each a few lines: where the text came from, which leaves were missing and where they were supplied, which characters he changed and which looked wrong but he dared not change. "A postscript. You stopped here." Collation is two people facing each other like enemies, one reading, one checking: "You stopped at the right place." Then the telephone. He Yuan didn't know Agent Luo's name either; his aunt did: Luo Jianguo; Sister Liu is Liu Guifang. Apa? Half an hour, then hoarse: "Patigül. I went to her house. She was airing quilts. She looked at me a long time and said in thirty-odd years nobody at the station had asked. Then she laughed and wiped her eyes." Shao Min reeled off six from the roster, and Little Xu, hearing his full name read slowly, said it was the first time in thirty-three years. Aynur wept on the phone, then spelled it out: Mi-na-war. "My mother." Eleven names in a morning, and He Yuan's grandfather: He Shoucheng, not here, so printed. — M.
Memo to file. Chengdu, 17–29 March 2038. Names, and a postscript.
1. The cover. Three lines of names. Handwritten: Abdurehman (six shaking characters), Aynur (Uyghur and Chinese, two days), Rose Kazarian (ninety-two, six spoiled sheets), Lin Xiufen (traced three times), Han Lixin (from the 2019 letter). The rest in type. Zhong: "Messy. Don't touch it."
2. What I'd written. Agent Luo, Masters Gu, Chen and Feng, Big Xu, Team-leader Pan, "Aynur's mother", Apa, Sister Liu, Little Xu, Uncle Kurban: posts, workshop titles, kinship words, a sorting table's nickname. Not one name. Written last October as I say them, without noticing.
3. The precedent. Mao Jin of Changshu built the Jiguge library, printed six hundred-odd titles, and bought Song editions by the leaf (two hundred cash a leaf) because "a book missing one leaf isn't that book." At the end of each title, a postscript: the source of the text, the leaves supplied and from where, the characters changed, and those that looked wrong but were left, with a note. Collation, in the old phrase, is two readers facing each other like enemies. "You stopped at the right place."
4. The calls. He Yuan: Luo Jianguo; Liu Guifang. Apa: He Yuan, two years at her table, didn't know. "Patigül." She was airing quilts: "Thirty-odd years and nobody at the station ever asked." She asked how it's written; he wrote four characters; "So that's what it looks like written down."
5. Shanghai. Shao Min, from the roster: Gu Changsheng, Pan Xiuying, Chen Youfu, Feng Yongnian, Xu Guoliang, Xu Zhiming. "Twenty years together and I had to open the roster." Little Xu: "Thirty-three years in the works and the first time anyone read my full name, and so slowly."
6. Aynur's mother. A long silence; Alim: "She's crying. Her mother's been gone twenty-odd years and nobody in the house has said her name; she's grandmother, the old lady. She'd almost forgotten her mother had a name." Then, syllable by syllable in Chinese: "Mi-na-war. My mother."
7. Eleven, and one more. Luo Jianguo, Liu Guifang, Patigül, Gu Changsheng, Chen Youfu, Feng Yongnian, Xu Guoliang, Pan Xiuying, Xu Zhiming, Minawar, and Kurban without the "Uncle"; and He Yuan: the 1992 entry "Master He" was his grandfather, He Shoucheng. Not here; printed. Mao Jin: "My collations mostly catch a wrong character, a meaning slightly off. Yours caught people. Write what they're called and the book doesn't contain them. Write their names and they're in it."
8. The Wall Street version. Every figure in a company report carried its source, department and table; not one ever named the person who worked it out. An old accountant of more than ten years retired, and on the day he left nobody knew how many of those figures were his.
9. The last page. Zhong needed it by morning. A year and a half ago it was blank: "this page belongs to whoever uses the book." I'd promised Alim to write it: what I thought of myself, what others struck out, what stayed. "Write too much, it's self-praise; too little, false modesty." Mao Jin: "A postscript has three parts: where the book came from, whose hands it passed through, what I changed and where I was wrong. The first two are on your cover. Write the third."
10. The postscript. (1) "Recorded by Marco" on the fourth edition: wrong, removed. (2) Kuqa, 18 Nov 2035: I handed the bags and knew which was which: wrong; since 2037 the hander doesn't know. (3) Fresno, Jan 2037, row five, seventh vine: I flattened a spur and cut away a year: wrong; Jan 2038 recut, said first, then cut. (4) I thought soft meant damp: wrong, with Boss Hu; the eaters, blindfold, tasted otherwise. (5) I thought the average enough: wrong; a man stood a year inside it, listening. (6) Last October I wrote eleven people's titles, not names: wrong; corrected today. (7) Eight years ago, arriving in Turpan, I thought I had come to teach: wrong; for eight years I have been learning. What stayed of mine: the difference of differences, the cabinet half, writing it down before opening; each changed by others, whose names are on those entries. "The next page is blank. After this page, it belongs to whoever uses the book." Mao Jin, twice through: "A good postscript. No self-praise, no false modesty; wrong written as wrong, kept as kept, the changers named."
11. The line. "Once a book is printed it no longer belongs to the printer. The postscript is the printer's last sentence in it: this book passed through these hands; I am one of them; here is where I was wrong." 20 March, the equinox: eight hundred copies; sixty-seven parcels, one per name; those not here sent to their families (He Shoucheng's to He Yuan; Han Lixin's with Lin Xiufen's to New Jersey; Minawar's to Aynur; Patigül's to Aksu, her name on the label).
12. Arrivals, and next. Turpan, 25 March: his left hand over his six characters from the first stroke to the last, then down to Aynur's, a look back at her, her hand on his shoulder; he wrote one character to the camera: book. New Jersey, 29 March: her finger on her own three traced characters, then down to the last of the third line, Han Lixin, still for a long time. She didn't cry. "His writing's still so straight." She read the postscript aloud; at "cut away a year": "Wrong, so write it. Good. Your father's book was like that too." Then: "The jujube's in bud. The quilt cloth is spread on the living-room floor. When are you coming to thread the needle?"

"Whoever brought a Song-printed book, he paid by the leaf, two hundred cash for each leaf."
Mao Jin, a seventeenth-century bibliophile from Changshu, built one of the great private libraries of the late Ming and printed more than six hundred titles from it. He bought rare editions by the page, on the principle that a book missing a single leaf is no longer the same book. To many of his editions he added a short postscript recording where the text came from, which pages had been supplied from other copies, which readings he had corrected and which doubtful ones he had left as found.
A postscript of that kind is an audit note, and its value lies in what the auditor says about the work rather than about himself: provenance, the chain of hands, and the editor's own changes and errors. It is the opposite of a foreword that thanks "the team" or a report that cites departments but never the people who did the work.
Proofreading names is a small version of the same discipline. A list of contributors that records what people are called, a job title, a nickname, a family relation, leaves the actual people out of the record. Asking for a real name, sometimes for the first time in decades, is how they get in.
"This book passed through these hands; I am one of them; here is where I was wrong."
