English Mirror: Duke Ping of Jin asked Shi Kuang: I am seventy and wish to study, but I fear it is already evening. Shi Kuang said: Then why not light a candle? — I have heard it said: to love learning when young is like the sun as it rises; to love learning in one's prime is like the light of noon; to love learning when old is like the light of a lit candle. — The light of a candle, set against walking in the dark, which is better? The duke said: Well spoken.
「January 8. Ribbon's still on. Bring your hands.」
「Grandma says: bring the same hands as last year. She wants to see if they learned.」

Twentieth of December, 2037, a Sunday, morning, Turpan. The vines were buried in early November; the mounds run in rows from behind the yard to the foot of the slope, filmed with frost that melts to damp when the sun comes up. House three empty; on its doorframe this year's two strings, Alim's by day on the left, Aynur's by night on the right, dark brown now and swaying a little. It was Abdurehman's birthday. Last year I was in New Jersey and saw Alim's photograph five days late. This year I was here. For a month, every day after lunch, Aynur wheeled him into the small east room; he waved her out with his left hand; the door stayed shut two hours; two pats on the door and she brought him out, blue ink on his fingers. Alim had looked through the crack: "It isn't one character." Since the stroke he has written one character at a time, on the day he has something to say to someone: early, steady, next year, go, done, home, waiting, fortune, back. This time a month, and nobody shown.
At noon a stick tapped up the lane: an old man with a long cloth-wrapped bundle on his back, eyes open and white. "There's a pen moving in this yard. Slowly. A stroke, a pause, another. It's coming from the left." The east room was a dozen steps away; I heard nothing. Shi Kuang, of Jin, a lute-player. "Written with the right hand a pen pushes outward and slides; with the left it's pulled, and it drags. This one is learning, and has been for some time; there's less drag than in the first days." Born blind: "For those who can't see, the ears do the looking." Under the bare trellis he told me about his duke at seventy, afraid it was too late to learn. "Why not light a candle?" Young, learning is the rising sun; grown, the noon sun; old, a lit candle. "Which is better, the candle, or groping in the dark?" He doesn't know what candlelight looks like. "But I know how big it is. Not far. Enough for one step at your feet, one inch under your hand. For writing, an inch is enough."
After lunch Alim carried out a bread box packed with paper, a card face down on top. Abdurehman turned it over: one line in Uyghur, right to left, unbroken; below it six Chinese characters, every stroke shaking, standing up together. His name. He drew a rectangle in the air over it. Alim: "The cover." At supper on 22 November I had talked again about the fifth edition carrying the names of those who do the work, his first; he heard. Next day he began shutting the door. At the bottom of the box the first sheet was illegible; on the back of each day's first sheet a date in pencil, 23 November to 19 December: 341 sheets. Aynur had written them. "Before he shut the door I put paper on the table; when I brought him out I took the used sheets and kept them under my bed. He didn't say to tell. I'm his wife; I don't need to look to know." Uyghur took three days, Chinese a month: "Our script goes right to left; the left hand follows and can see what it's just written. Chinese goes left to right; the hand covers what it's just written." Shi Kuang: "Then you must remember what you've just written. That's what he learned this month." — M.

Memo to file. Turpan, 20 December 2037. A signature.
1. The closed door. For a month after lunch: wheeled into the east room, door shut two hours, two pats to come out, blue ink on his fingers. Alim: "It isn't one character." Every character he has written since the stroke was written on the day he had something to say, for one person, then he put the pen down. This was a month without showing anyone.
2. The visitor. Shi Kuang, blind lute-player of Jin, heard the pen from the gate: "It's coming from the left. Right-handed writing pushes and slides; left-handed is pulled and drags. Less drag than in the first days."
3. The precedent. Duke Ping at seventy feared it was too late to learn. "Why not light a candle?" Young, the rising sun; grown, noon; old, a candle. "Candlelight or groping in the dark?" "Well spoken." Shi Kuang has never seen a candle: "I know how big it is: one step at your feet, one inch under your hand. For writing, an inch is enough."
4. The card. A bread box of paper; on top a card: his name in Uyghur, right to left, unbroken; below, six Chinese characters, shaking, standing. The radical on 阿 too long; the right ear of 都 bigger than its left; four dots of 热 crowded; the mouth of 合 closed with such force the last stroke dented the card; the 又 at the bottom of 曼 leaning right. He drew a rectangle in the air above it. Alim: "The cover."
5. What I hadn't imagined. I had pictured the fifth edition's list going to the printer and coming back as names set in identical type. I never imagined one of them would be handwritten.
6. The stack. Bottom sheet illegible: the radical a hook out of the box, half of 都, dots of 热 scattered, the mouth of 合 open like an unshut door, 又 dropped to the next line. Then: 25 Nov the radical pulled back; 30 Nov the halves of 都 equal; 5 Dec the dots in a row; 11 Dec the mouth closed for the first time; 16 Dec the 又 stood up. Guli counted: 341 sheets.
7. Who kept them. The dates were Aynur's: she left fresh paper each day, collected the used sheets when she wheeled him out, kept them under her bed, dated the first of each day. "He didn't say to tell. I'm his wife. I don't need to look to know." He smiled with the left corner of his mouth, the biggest smile he can make.
8. Three days and a month. Uyghur took three days, Chinese a month. Right-to-left, the left hand trails the line and sees what it has just written; left-to-right, the hand covers it. "If you can't see the last stroke, you don't know where to put the next." Shi Kuang: "Then you must keep it in your head. I've never seen the string I just plucked; the note stays in my ear, and the next note goes where that one leads. He learned more than a hand this month."
9. The Wall Street version. Each year the company report carried the chief executive's signature on its last page; I learned it was an image the assistant dragged from a folder onto whatever needed it. Hundreds of documents a year, not one touched by his pen. The same name, and nobody standing under it. Under these six characters stand 341 sheets.
10. Handed over. At the cake (Guli's, a line of Uyghur in jam) he pushed the card to me and pressed his palm on it, hard. Shi Kuang's fingers read it stroke by stroke and stopped at the dent: "He put his strength into this one." Did the duke learn? "I don't know. I know he lit the candle that night."
11. The line. "Learning when old isn't for finishing. It's so that when it's dark, the inch under your hand is lit. The young man's sun lights a great field and he doesn't know it; the old man's candle lights an inch, and he knows he lit it himself." Leaving, toward the east room, where paper and a pen still lay on the table: "Tomorrow he'll write again. What? I don't know. Until the day there's no light under his hand."
12. The printer, and next. I sent the photograph to the printer in Chengdu: first name on the cover, use this. "Shall we have someone trace it evenly? Looks better." No tracing. Not the shaky parts either. "And the other names, handwritten too?" I sat with that a long while. Ask. Those who want to write, write. Those who don't, print. Those no longer here, print. Alim carried the box back to his father's room. Ten o'clock, Martin: row five, the vine buried in grey winter soil, the red ribbon faded on the trunk. "January 8. Ribbon's still on. Bring your hands." Nora: "Grandma says bring the same hands as last year. She wants to see if they learned." Under the ribbon, the spur I cut bare last year: black, dry, not one bud.
"To love learning when old is like the light of a lit candle. The light of a candle, set against walking in the dark, which is better?"
Shi Kuang, the blind court musician of the state of Jin in the sixth century BC, appears in a well-known exchange recorded by Liu Xiang. The duke, seventy years old, said he wanted to study but feared it was already evening. Shi Kuang answered that young learning is the morning sun, mature learning the noon sun, and late learning a candle; and that a candle is still better than walking in the dark.
The image is modest, and that is its strength. A candle does not light a field. It lights the step at one's feet and the inch under one's hand, which is exactly the scale of a new skill learned late: one character, one stroke, one day's sheet of practice.
There is also a lesson about names. A printed name is identical whoever it belongs to; a signature in one's own hand, especially one earned with effort, means that a person stands behind it. Organisations that reduce signatures to images pasted onto documents keep the name and lose the person.
"The old man's candle lights an inch, and he knows he lit it himself."
