Martin

Rose

English Mirror: In truth the bamboo in my mind is not the bamboo in my eyes. And then, grinding the ink and spreading the paper, as the brush comes down it changes on the instant: the bamboo in my hand is not the bamboo in my mind. — That the idea comes before the brush is the fixed rule; that the delight lies beyond the rule is the living spark. — Cut away the many and keep the few, like a tree in late autumn; set out what's new and different, like the flowers of the second month.

Martin

Carol

Martin

Martin

Martin

Martin

Martin

Martin

Nora

Rose

Rose

Martin

Rose

“Same hands.”

“They learned.”

Nora

Rose

“Not yet. August. When it's full.”

Martin

Rose

Carol

Carol

Eighth of January, 2038, a Friday, half past six in the morning, Fresno. Fog: the first row clear, the second a grey shadow, nothing beyond the third, the vineyard soaked in a bowl of milk. I'd arrived two nights before, Urumqi to Shanghai to San Francisco and three hours' drive; the porch light on; Nora at the door: Grandma went to bed at nine; bring last year's gloves. Martin had been pruning twenty-odd days and had left all of row five, forty-odd vines, untouched. "One vine is cutting; a row is watching. You cut a row and I'll watch it, and I'll know whether last year's cut is still in your hand." The hole worn at the right thumb of the gloves was still there. The ribbon on the seventh vine had faded to pale pink, the knot still Nora's. A year ago here I flattened a renewal spur, taking it for a leftover knob: "What you cut off was next year. One cut, two years to see." August: three-odd trays against four or five; the south side crowded, the north side empty.

This morning the vine showed it all: last year's four fruited canes, grey, to come off; three spurs, each with two new canes, six to choose from; the fourth spur, mine, black and dry like a burnt match-head. And two inches below it, out of the old bark, a thin cane nobody had left, brown and ripe. Martin, coffee steaming: "It grew that itself. The old trunk keeps buds asleep, ten, twenty years. Cut the one beside it and it hurts, and wakes one to fill the hole." I had cut away next year; the vine, out of old wood, gave another. In the fog by the sixth vine a tall thin man in a long gown, sleeves rolled, painting: not vines but bamboo. "In winter, stripped, these look just like bamboo." Zheng Xie; people call him Banqiao; he painted bamboo in Yangzhou. Forty-odd years, and one thing never right: "The bamboo in my eyes, the bamboo in my mind, the bamboo under my hand. Three stalks; not once the same." Last January my eyes saw a knob, my mind meant to remove a useless thing, my hand removed next year. "You're a little worse than me: I can't make them match; you had all three wrong. That's easier to find. The hardest is eyes right, mind right, and the hand goes down wrong."

Martin's new rule: say it before you cut. Walk round three times; then my plan: five canes, "to make up last year's tray." Martin set his coffee on the ground. "You said 'make up'. The root decides how many bunches a vine can feed, and it's no bigger than last year. Next January it won't have four good canes. Last year's bill can't be paid with this year's vine." So: four canes, the longest swung from the south onto the empty north wire; three spurs, and the fourth, the new cane from the trunk, cut to two buds; the black stub left a year to shield it. "Isn't the rule cut out the dead?" "It's the rule." Banqiao: "Idea before brush is the rule; delight beyond the rule is the living part." At the thin cane my hand stopped in the air. "Left hand." Thumb up the bark: the flat base bud, not counted; one; two; a finger's width above; one cut. At ten Rose came out on Nora's arm and touched every cut, counted the two buds, found the stub, looked at Martin. "Same hands. They learned." The ribbon? "Not yet. August. When it's full." — M.

Memo to file. Fresno, 8 January 2038. The cut, a second time.

1. The row. Martin left row five (forty-odd vines) for me. "One vine is cutting; a row is watching." Last year's gloves, the same hole at the right thumb.

2. The ribbon vine, year two. 2037: three-odd trays against four or five; south crowded, north empty. Today: four old canes to remove; six new canes on three spurs; my flattened spur black and dry; and two inches below it a thin, ripe cane out of the old bark, which nobody left. Martin: "Old trunks keep buds asleep for ten, twenty years. Cut the one next to it, it hurts, and wakes one to fill the hole." I removed next year; the vine supplied another.

3. The precedent. Zheng Banqiao painted bamboo forty-odd years: the bamboo in the eyes is not the bamboo in the mind; when the brush comes down, the bamboo in the hand is not the bamboo in the mind. My January 2037: eyes saw a knob; mind meant "useless"; hand cut next year. "All three wrong is easy to find. Hardest is eyes right, mind right, and the hand goes wrong."

4. Say it first. Martin's new rule: walk round three times without touching (count; colour, flat or round, bud spacing, inside or out; then the wires); say every cut out loud; then he says nothing and I cut. Why not last year? "Last year you didn't have that cut in your hand. This year you do."

5. "Make up." My first plan: five canes, to make up last year's missing tray. Martin put his coffee down. The root sets how many bunches the vine can feed, and the root is no bigger than last year. Five canes: small grapes, poor drying, sugar short, wood unripe by autumn; next January not even four good canes. "Last year's bill can't be paid with this year's vine."

6. The Wall Street version. A trader who lost one day doubled his size the next morning to win yesterday back, and lost twice as much. His reading of the market was right and his plan was right; the extra size wasn't what the market wanted. It was what yesterday wanted.

7. The plan. Four canes: two south, one middle, and the longest southern one swung over to the north wire that had been empty a year. Spurs: one on each of the three old ones, two buds; the fourth, the new trunk cane, two buds. I said: and cut the black stub out clean.

8. Beyond the rule. Martin: "All right except the last. Cut the stub now and that's a fresh wound on the trunk two inches from the new one; it dries, cracks downward, reaches its base, and the new one dies too. Leave it to shield the new one a year; next January, cut it." "Isn't the rule to cut out dead wood?" "It's the rule." Banqiao: "Idea before brush is the rule; delight beyond the rule is the living spark. That stub he leaves is beyond the rule."

9. The pause. Old canes off, four snips. Each new cane gripped left-handed, stroked root to tip, bent and released. The long one round the trunk onto the north wire: a small creak, no break. At the trunk cane the open blades stopped mid-air. A year ago, two inches higher, the same reach, and no stop. Martin, quietly: "Left hand." Thumb up the bark: the flat base bud (doesn't count); one; two; forefinger laid across above the second for a finger's width; one cut. The cut slanted away from the bud, green-white and weeping.

10. Rose. In a heavy coat and red scarf she had us walk her to the vine, five minutes for a dozen steps, and touched every cut with knuckles like walnuts. Counted the two buds; felt the finger's width; found the stub; looked at Martin. "I told him to leave it. Shield for a year." Then: "Same hands. They learned." Untie the ribbon? "Not yet. August. When it's full." Nora: cutting right is today's business; how full it hangs is August's; the ribbon goes with August. One cut, two years.

11. The line. Banqiao clipped his sheet to the wire: the vine as pruned, the black knob, the thin cane with two buds, and "cut away the many and keep the few, like a tree in late autumn." Eyes, mind or hand? "Still not matching. Eyes, mind, hand never line up in a lifetime. Someone who can prune hasn't lined them up; he knows where his hand differs from his mind, and by how much. Last year you didn't know; this year you did, so you stopped." Martin at the end of the day, handing back the shears: "Next January, you cut the stub."

12. Next. Carol flies with me Monday. Soil can't go: "Thirty years telling people you can't bring soil through customs. I can hardly bring it myself." Rose sent a small paper bag: a handful from the ribbon vine's three-odd trays, "for the man who writes with his left hand. Tell him it's from the vine Marco cut wrong. Let him taste how much sweet is left." Near eleven, Alim: told my father you're coming Wednesday with the American lady who graded raisins. He asked for paper and pen and wrote one character: soil. Then slapped the table with his left hand.

"The bamboo in my mind is not the bamboo in my eyes; the bamboo in my hand is not the bamboo in my mind."
Zheng Xie, known as Zheng Banqiao, was an eighteenth-century painter from Yangzhou famous for his bamboo. In an inscription on one painting he described the three stages every practitioner knows: what one sees, what one intends, and what one's hand actually produces, and admitted that in a lifetime they never quite matched. He added that the idea must come before the brush, which is the rule, and that the delight lies beyond the rule, which is what keeps the work alive.
Pruning, trading and almost any skilled craft live in the same three gaps. An observer can see correctly and plan correctly and still execute badly; the cure is not to pretend the gap away but to know one's own hand, to say the plan aloud before acting, and to pause at the exact place one failed before.
There is a fourth trap the inscription does not name: trying to make this year pay for last year. A vine left with extra canes to "make up" a poor harvest fruits weakly and has fewer good canes the year after. A trader who doubles his size to win back yesterday's loss is executing yesterday's wish rather than today's plan.
"Last year's bill can't be paid with this year's vine."
