English Mirror: This warm epidemic is caused neither by wind, nor by cold, nor by summer heat, nor by damp; it is another kind of noxious qi altogether, abroad between heaven and earth. — Holding to the old methods does not fit the present illness; searching the old books for the present illness, one finds no clear account; and so the remedies fail. — With a quiet mind I worked through the principle of it: the qi by which it is caught, the gate by which it enters, the place where it lodges, and the course by which it passes on and changes.

Nineteenth of November, 2037, a Thursday, noon, the buying station at Aksu. The last week of the season: the warehouse stacked to the beams, two trucks waiting at the scale, everyone in padded caps. On the four-hour bus from Kuqa, Eli kept turning to yesterday's card. "If it had come out seven tenths, what would I be doing now?" Working out where you were wrong. "That's fine too." He Yuan met us at the gate with a shoebox under his arm and two characters on its side in his large hand: Don't know. "A hundred and seventeen." Each raisin had a crack two or three millimetres long, curved half round the stem end, its edge neither straight nor ragged but shining, as if someone had traced it with a fine brush dipped in syrup.
The first to stop was the hand of Apa, the oldest woman at the sorting table, thirty-odd years there: her hands never look, but when a raisin is different they stop by themselves. Luo looked a long time: forty years, never seen it. The clerk at the scale: call it a pressed crack, one grade down, easy to book. He Yuan: the edge isn't straight. Then a drying crack. It isn't ragged either. "Then what is it?" "I don't know." He wrote it on a box. Luo didn't stop him: "Leave it." In He Yuan's pocket, folded in four, his October page titled Cracks: pressed cracks straight-edged, drying cracks ragged, Grandpa Luo said so. "I'd written two lines and a third kind turned up."
In the afternoon a thin man in a grey robe sat beside me at the table, a chipped wooden case on his back, smelling of dried roots. Wu Youxing, of Wu county, physician. He looked at the box and smiled. "Those three characters are well written." In the year of the great epidemic the doctors searched the books, found only wind, cold, summer heat and damp, and pushed the new illness into the cold-damage basket. The remedies failed. "It wasn't any of them. It was another kind altogether." The first step is admitting it isn't those. "Doctors are afraid to say 'I don't know'. This boy isn't." Then four questions: what brings it, by which gate it enters, where it lodges, how it changes. By evening we had answered them, and He Yuan's page had a third line. "When you can't recognise a thing, writing 'don't know' keeps a basket for it." — M.
Memo to file. Aksu, 19 November 2037. A crack that fits neither box.
1. The find. 117 raisins, each with a curved crack (1.5–4 mm) round the stem end, edges glossy. Apa's hands stopped on them at the sorting table. Luo: forty years, never seen it. The clerk wanted to book them as pressed cracks (one grade down) or drying cracks; He Yuan: neither, "I don't know"; he wrote it on a box. Luo: "Leave it."
2. The precedent. Wu Youxing, physician, on the epidemic of his youth: the books listed wind, cold, summer heat, damp; the doctors forced the new illness into the cold-damage basket and treated it accordingly; the remedies failed. "Holding to the old methods doesn't fit today's illness; look for today's illness in the old books and it isn't there." First step: admit it isn't those. "Doctors fear saying 'I don't know'; if you say it, the family sends for someone else. So they say cold damage." Then four questions, one at a time, writing down what can't be found as "can't be found."
3. The gate (where it entered). Liu's ledger: that truck carried 26 bags from four households; all seven bags with the crack were one household's, Kurban of Wushi county. The other 19 bags, same truck, same day, same warehouse: none. "Not the truck, not the station. His." The Wall Street version: a monthly risk report, five columns of losses, the last one "Other", which crept from 2% to over 10% in a year; nobody looked, because "other" belongs to nobody. Next year's big event had been sitting in "Other" for more than a year. "Other" means nobody's. "Don't know" means keep looking.
4. The cause (what brought it). He Yuan's test, three bowls of warm water: pressed cracks gaped, white flesh showing; drying cracks' ragged edges softened and curled; the new ones stayed shut, the glossy rim taking no water. Luo scraped the rim and tasted: "Sugar. When this opened the grape was still full of juice; it welled up and dried on the edge and sealed it." Eli: then it cracked before picking. Luo: "While still on the vine." My note: cause, water, on the vine (underlined, question mark: a guess).
5. The confirmation, by video. Kurban, sixty-odd, at his field edge, vines buried in rows like sleeping animals: on 23 August the canal broke at his field edge in the night; the field stood in water two days; the grapes swelled shining and some split. "I thought drying would mend them. Dried, you can't see the cracks." He turned the phone to the canal: a strip of fresh, paler cement. "Mended." A man asleep, a canal breaching, and three months later, a thousand li away, a hand picking out 117 raisins.
6. The lodging (where it sits). He Yuan measured fifty: every crack at the stem end, curved round it; none on the body. Luo: a grape drinks through the stem end; swelling, the skin round the stem is tightest and gives first.
7. The change (how it develops). Apa broke them open along the cracks with her nail. Nine of 117 had a speck of white inside: mould. Luo, grim: "This is what matters. Open on the vine for days, dust and insects get in; then the sugar seals it, glossy outside, closed in. A winter in a slightly damp bag and the white grows out. One raisin grows, the whole bag goes." Booked as pressed cracks and stacked with the rest, by spring it would be a whole stack. Wrong basket, failed remedy.
8. Luo's three rules. (1) Kurban's seven bags re-sorted from scratch at Apa's table, every cracked raisin broken open and checked. (2) Clean ones bought at full grade; mouldy ones discarded, no penalty to him. The labour: "First time this year; the station bears it." (3) From next year, a new column in the buying book: in August, did water get into your field? Liu wrote it inside the back cover and read it aloud.
9. The third line. "Vine crack: glossy edge, sugar. Round the stem, curved, 1.5–4 mm. Doesn't gape in water. Break open and check inside for mould." Blue or pencil? Eli: glossy edge, sugar, round the stem, doesn't gape, nine in 117 mouldy: we saw it, blue. Cracked on the vine, from swelling with water: Kurban said it, Luo inferred it, we didn't see it: pencil. Next August, when someone's field takes water, go and look; then trace it over in blue. One line blue, half a line pencil.
10. Names. Apa, her hand stopped. Grandpa Luo, tasted the sugar on the edge. Aunt Liu, found the seven bags in the ledger. Uncle Kurban, the canal broke on 23 August. He Yuan, three bowls. I added: Eli, who split blue from pencil.
11. The line. Wu Youxing on his epidemic: "Half cleared up. The gate, I said nose and mouth, not skin; that I got fairly right. What the thing actually is, I could only call a kind of qi, unseen and untouchable; where I couldn't reach the bottom I wrote that I couldn't. When I wrote it I knew someone later would see it more clearly." And: "When you can't recognise a thing, writing 'don't know' keeps a basket for it. Without that basket it gets pushed into someone else's, and nobody can ever find it again."
12. Next. He Yuan made me a clean copy of the page. How many pages can go after the last page of the Essentials? As many as the users grow. "Mine might change next year." Then change it, and write the year and who. Eli asleep on yesterday's ten bags. Two sheets a day apart, Kuqa and Aksu, two young men, the same pen. Eleven o'clock, Alim: "My father asks if you're coming back on 20 December." Yes; not last year, this year. "Every day this month after lunch he shuts the door and practises something. Nobody's allowed in. Through the crack: at the table, pen in his left hand. It isn't one character."
"This epidemic is caused neither by wind, nor by cold, nor by summer heat, nor by damp; it is another kind of noxious qi altogether."
Wu Youxing, a physician from Suzhou, watched an epidemic sweep through his region in 1641. His colleagues, trained on the classical categories of disease, treated it as "cold damage" because the books offered nothing closer, and their remedies failed. In his Treatise on Pestilence he began by refusing the fit: whatever this was, it belonged to none of the old categories. He then set out to trace what brought it, how it entered the body, where it lodged and how it developed, and he marked plainly the questions he could not answer.
Every classification system meets a case it cannot hold. The temptation is to force the case into the nearest box, because the box comes with a price, a procedure and a person responsible. A gentler version of the same mistake is the column labelled "other," where unexplained items accumulate unexamined because they belong to no one.
The better practice is a box marked "don't know," which is an instruction to keep looking rather than a place to stop.
