English Mirror: In the central plain he turned the armillary sphere, and reworked the old Zhuanxu calendar into the Taichu calendar. — Eight hundred years from now this calendar will be off by one day; by then there will be someone wise enough to set it right. — After it had been in use for a hundred-odd years, the calendar had fallen slightly behind the sky: the new moon was arriving before the calendar said it would.

Eighteenth of November, 2037, a Wednesday, half past nine, Tarim township, Kuqa. The same white cloth on the same table in Yiming's yard, and on it today only two small bags, the same size, each half as big as a cell bag; beside them the five ruler bags. Last night's frost dripped off the eaves. Yiming was helped out to his chair, twenty-odd steps; the doctor's limit was an hour outdoors. "An hour is enough. I've waited a year." Eli back from Aksu on two days' leave, Erkin behind him, hands in his sleeves: the same three who pinched two years ago. One bag with ragged stitches, Kamil's, sealed on 10 October from the bunch he picked; one with stitches like a ruler's, Yiming's, sealed on the fifteenth, Eli holding the mouth because the old hands shook. One bunch, one house, one rack, one nail. Five days apart. On the card, blue: sealed five days late on purpose; test one day, one tenth of a grade. Pencil: open next 18 November; see if it's half a grade harder; if so, it's true.

At ten a short man with a sunburnt face stood at the gate, a bundle of bamboo rings on his back, looking at the sky. "The sun rises here most of a double-hour later than where I come from." The accent was northern Sichuan. Langzhong. Luoxia Hong. "All my life I did one thing: I put days in order." Summoned to the capital to revise the calendar, twenty-odd men turning the rings by night and measuring shadows by day; offered a post when it was done, he went home. "Once the calendar was done my work was done. Whether it's right from then on is the sky's business." He read the card. "A number, said out loud. I respect whoever says one." Then: "How far off still counts as yes?" In a year and a month nobody had asked.

So before opening: Yiming's hand can tell a tenth, not half a tenth; four, five, six tenths count; three or under, seven or over, don't; three pinch, take the middle. Written in pencil, 10:20 a.m., signed by all but Luoxia Hong: "Whoever watches doesn't sign." Then Yiming stopped his own hand: the stitches would tell him which bag was which. Kamil sewed two new bags from last year's cloth, thirty-one stitches each, poured each old bag into a new one with a red or white thread inside, and went out into the lane; I shuffled them behind my back, not knowing. Yiming: left 3.7, right 3.2. Eli: 3.6, 3.0. Erkin: 3.4, 3.1. Red thread, the late bag, was on the left. Five tenths, six, three. Middle: five. Half a grade. Yiming held Eli's hand off the eraser: "Keep the guess. Write what you saw beside it." Luoxia Hong on his own eight hundred years: "Too early. In a hundred-odd years the moon was round before the calendar's day. My mistake was in multiplying, too far." And: "Say a number that can be wrong, and you leave the people after you a place to be right." — M.

Memo to file. Kuqa, 18 November 2037. A forecast, due.

1. The setup. Two years ago Eli (then 18) derived from two seasons that each day a cell is sealed late adds one tenth of a grade of hardness; two separate calculations agreed. Yiming (then 70) proposed the test: next year seal one small bag five days late on purpose; when opened it should be exactly half a grade harder. "If so, it's true; if not, we reckoned wrong." On 10 October 2036 Kamil sealed a small bag from the bunch he chose; the rest of the same bunch hung on the same nail five more days; Yiming sealed the second bag on the fifteenth. Card: blue line (sealed, the date, the rule), pencil line (Eli's prediction). Yiming's forty-year rule: blue for what you saw, pencil for what you heard or guessed; pencil can be erased.

2. The question nobody asked. Luoxia Hong, a calendar-maker from Langzhong, read the card: "How far off still counts as yes?" Eli: exactly five. Yiming: "No hand pinches 'exactly'. Mine tells a tenth apart, not half a tenth. Fifty years, that's my resolution." So: four, five or six tenths = yes; three or under, seven or over = no, and "no" means we reckoned wrong. And: three pinch, take the middle. Written, timed (10:20 a.m.), signed before opening. Luoxia Hong: "If you don't write it first, afterwards the one who gets four says 'close enough' and so does the one who gets seven. Then everything's right."

3. The Wall Street version. A model back-tested over ten years that won every year; the line for "a win" had been drawn after looking at the ten years. A colleague: shoot the arrow, then paint the target, and every arrow is a bullseye. Live, it lost money in its first year.

4. Blinding. Yiming, reaching for the bags, stopped: "Ragged stitches are Kamil's, close ones mine. A hand knows which is which, and once it knows, it isn't honest." Two years ago I shuffled the bags and remembered the order. This year Kamil sewed two identical bags (thirty-one stitches each, Yiming counting), transferred the contents, tied a red or white thread inside, and left the yard; I shuffled without knowing.

5. The pinch. Yiming blindfolded, one bag in each hand, nine pinches in all: left 3.7, right 3.2. Eli: 3.6, 3.0. Erkin, slowest, changed his answer once: 3.4, 3.1. Kamil drew the thread: red, the late bag, left. All three called the left harder.

6. The result. Differences: 0.5, 0.6, 0.3. Middle: 0.5. Other method (middle of each side, 3.6 minus 3.1): 0.5. Inside the agreed band. Yes. Erkin's 0.3 falls outside. Yiming: "Three pinch so that one can say something different. If all three always agreed, why have three? Write yours beside the middle one."

7. Keep the pencil. Eli wrote in blue beneath the pencil: date, three numbers, middle, the agreed band, "yes." He picked up the eraser; Yiming's hand stopped him. "Leave the pencil line. Keep the guess and write what you saw beside it. People reading this card later must know we guessed first and looked afterwards. Rub it out and it looks as if we knew all along." One card, three lines: the day it was sealed; what a twenty-year-old said a year ago; today.

8. What the number is for. Yiming to Kamil: "From now on, if you seal late, don't panic. Write how many days. When it's opened, take off a tenth a day. This number is for whoever seals late after me." The cells will pass to Kamil, who has driven for a living in Kuqa for twenty-odd years and may not always be home on 10 October. A father telling his son: late is survivable.

9. The next question. Eli, not looking at the card: "Ten days late? Twenty? Still a tenth a day?" Yiming laughed till he coughed: "This boy, right first time and not even pleased, already asking the next one."

10. The precedent. Luoxia Hong's calendar ran slightly longer than the sky each year; he measured that small excess over a few years, multiplied it out to eight hundred years, and said: by then, one day off. It happened in a hundred-odd years: the new moon came before the calendar's day. "The small excess I didn't measure finely enough; a hair's error, multiplied eight hundred times, isn't a hair. For years my calendar was right every year. The mistake was in multiplying. Too far." To Eli: "Yours was found from three days and ten, and today five agreed. Between three and ten, trust it. Fifteen, twenty, untested: don't multiply." Eli added, in pencil: "Over ten days late: untested."

11. The line. Does he regret the eight hundred years? "No. If I'd only said 'there will be some error', no one could ever say I was wrong. And no one could use it. I said eight hundred; they checked, found it off in a hundred-odd, and knew where to fix it. Say a number that can be wrong, and you leave those after you a place to be right." On "a wise man will set it right": "Whoever fixed it, I didn't know any of them. Still, they were the ones I was waiting for."

12. 1985, and next. Afternoon: this year's old cell, 1985. Yiming's line from last July: twenty; first year alone on two houses; his father watched from the field edge without a word. Eli tasted: a little sweeter than 1984. Sealed on what date? "Don't know. I didn't write dates then." Eli wrote on the back in blue: date sealed, unknown. Years with dates can be corrected today; years without can only say "a little sweeter". Near eleven, He Yuan from Aksu: a raisin on white paper beside a ruler, a crack neither straight-edged nor ragged. "Grandpa Luo says pressed cracks are straight, drying cracks ragged; this is neither; he's never seen it. A hundred-odd in today's truck." The edge of the crack shone. Tomorrow, Aksu, with Eli.

"Eight hundred years from now this calendar will be off by one day; by then there will be someone wise enough to set it right."
Luoxia Hong, an astronomer from Langzhong in what is now Sichuan, was one of the men who built the Taichu calendar for the Han court in 104 BC. Tradition credits him with an unusual sentence for a calendar-maker: an estimate of his own calendar's error, stated as a number, with a date on which it could be checked. The estimate was wrong. A later history records that within a hundred-odd years the calendar had fallen behind the sky, the new moon arriving before the calendar's day.
The sentence is still worth more than a vague warning. "There will be some error" can never be refuted and can never be used. "One day in eight hundred years" can be checked, and when it fails it shows where the measurement was too coarse. The deeper lesson is about extrapolation: a small error measured over a few years and multiplied over centuries is no longer small.
Forecasters today face the same two disciplines. Write down, before the result is known, how far off still counts as correct and how disagreements will be resolved; and once the forecast is confirmed, trust it only over the range that was actually tested.
"Keep the guess. Write what you saw beside it."
