English Mirror: "They once obtained a bronze figure for testing acupuncture: a whole body cast in fine bronze, with every organ inside. On the outside, beside each point, its name was inlaid in gold." — "The method was this: the outside was coated with yellow wax and the inside filled with mercury. The physician measured by the divisions of the body's inch and needled at the point; if he struck the point, the needle went in and mercury came out; if he was off by the least amount, the needle would not go in." — (Wang Weiyi was a court physician of the Northern Song. The acupuncture points had been copied from book to book for generations and had gathered many errors. Ordered to correct them, he wrote an illustrated manual and cast two bronze figures, both to fix the points and to examine physicians.)
Rose

Tenth of May, 2037, morning, Shanxian. A dirt road into a village on the edge of the desert, vines on both sides, May's new shoots just out, the young leaves opening one by one. At the end of the road an old mud-brick drying house with rows of holes in its walls, and beside it Lu Xiao's drying room, brick, two exhaust fans on the roof, a small iron door. She met me at the door in cotton work gloves, twenty-six now, her second year here, a shade browner than last year. "Chang Yushan is inside on Ahmat's kang, waiting for you." He comes every May and stays a few days; this year he came early because he'd heard I was coming.
He sat very straight on the edge of the kang with a tea bowl, thinner than last year, his hair all white, his eyes as bright as ever. Before I sat down: "That page of yours, the sweating line, you've got it backwards." I opened the notebook: machines beat hands on moisture, sugar, room temperature; hands beat machines on how fast a pinch comes back, whether the stem is half brown, whether a bunch sweats at night. Aynur taught that one, with the back of the hand. "I know she did. I felt them with the back of my hand for forty years too. You write that the hand is better. By day it is. At three in the morning it isn't."
"At three in the morning a man is sleepy. Forty years: every year on the nights we laid the bunches out, up three times a night, twenty bunches each time. Three times in ten I felt them asleep. The hand went out; the head didn't wake. The next day I couldn't remember what I'd felt. Those three times I still wrote something in the book. I wrote: dry. I didn't really know." Lu Xiao in the doorway: I have something to show you. Last September, while Ahmat's family checked the bunches at night by hand, she had clipped a thumbnail-sized probe to twenty bunches, wired to a small box, logging the surface damp on the stems every ten minutes. One in the morning: hand and probe agreed on nineteen of twenty. Three: fourteen. Five: sixteen. Most disagreements: hand said dry, probe said damp. A week after hanging, those were the bunches whose bottom berries softened first and moulded first.
That night, in the empty drying room, an old man in a wide-sleeved dark green official robe and a soft cap with two ribbons hanging behind was turning the little probe over under the lamp. "Can this thing examine a person's hand?" Wang Weiyi. — M.
Memo to file. Shanxian, 10–11 May 2037. What the machine may judge, and what it may examine.
1. The correction. Chang Yushan: night sweating belongs on the machine side after three in the morning. "A man is sleepy at three. In forty years, three times in ten I felt the bunches asleep and still wrote: dry. I didn't know."
2. The evidence. Lu Xiao's probes on twenty bunches last September, logging every ten minutes, beside Ahmat's hand. Agreement: 19/20 at 1 a.m., 14/20 at 3 a.m., 16/20 at 5 a.m. Where they disagreed, the hand mostly said dry and the probe damp; a week after hanging those bunches softened and moulded first.
3. The precedent. Acupuncture points had been copied from book to book for centuries until one point sat in three places in three books. Wang Weiyi was ordered to fix them; he wrote the illustrated manual and, fearing it too would be miscopied, cast two life-size bronze figures with every organ inside and every point drilled and labelled in gold. "Books get copied wrong. Bronze doesn't."
4. The examination. Coat the figure in yellow wax so the points can't be seen; fill it with mercury. The candidate measures by his training and needles once. On the point, the needle goes in and mercury flows; off by a hair, the needle strikes bronze. "Whether he's accurate isn't my word or his. It's the figure's." Lu Xiao's probes are the figure: not her word, not Ahmat's.
5. The limit. Physicians get tired too; some who needled well by day came to the exam after a night with a patient and missed. "The figure isn't tired." Then the figure is better than the physician. "The figure never falls ill. It doesn't run a fever or cough or hurt. Every point is on it, but it can't tell you which one this patient needs today. That the physician decides, by looking, feeling the pulse, asking. What the figure can check is whether, once he's decided, his needle goes where he meant."
6. The line. "The bronze figure can examine whether you needle accurately; it can't examine whether you should needle." The probe can examine whether a bunch dried in the night; it can't say whether that bunch should have been hung. That Aynur decided by day. Leaving: this room is a bronze figure, "but the figure is for examining physicians, not replacing them. The day you dismiss the physicians and keep only the figure, you won't cure a single illness."
7. The rewritten page, three columns. Machines better: sugar; room temperature, and where high and low it's hot; after 3 a.m., whether bunches sweat (before 1 a.m. hand and probe are about equal; people get sleepy, probes don't). Hands better: how fast a pinch comes back; whether the stem is half brown; and moisture split in two, "how much water, the machine; where the water is, the hand. A raisin dry outside with a pocket of water inside reads the same number as one evenly damp through. Pinch it and you know they're not the same." Lu Xiao's third column: machines examine hands. Every morning the hand pinches bags one and five; every week the moisture meter checks what the hand said; record the gap. "If it grows, either the machine is broken or the hand has changed. Check the machine first, then the hand." Chang: "If anyone had checked me like that for forty years, I'd know which nights I felt them asleep." Signed: dictated by Chang Yushan, additions by Ahmat, written by Lu Xiao, May 2037, Shanxian; and at his insistence: the sweating line was backwards, written by Marco. Write it in.
8. Around the page. Chang knew Abdurehman's raisins by one pinch: "He hangs them soft; other people's are harder." Tell him hello; he writes with his left hand now. At the old drying house Chang felt the holes one by one: "These are for the wind. The fans on that roof are the machine's wind, the same all night. The sky's wind comes in gusts, so bunches in a drying house sweat in gusts; in a machine room they sweat evenly." Lu Xiao: you can see it in the probes: crooked lines in the drying house, flat ones in the machine room. "In a machine's house the machine measures true. In the sky's house it measures true too, but you have to know how to read it." Lu Xiao bought the probes online herself and never claimed them: "I don't want the probes to replace them. I want them to keep them company; at three in the morning, something is awake." Ahmat's son, the nineteen-year-old who was asleep on the three o'clock round last year: this September I'll still feel them at three; then I'll check the probe and write down where we disagree. "That's the column," said Chang. Wang Weiyi: the examiner tests the figure first, needling it himself before any candidate; and test the probe before hanging season on a bunch you know is wet. Chang: "I trust it half. I trust that it doesn't get sleepy. I don't trust that it doesn't know who picked this bunch, or why." Lu Xiao will offer probes to house three in Turpan in September, if Aynur wants them.
9. Two small dates. At lunch Lu Xiao's mother phoned from Chongming: "Eaten. It's fine. Next year maybe." Every week the same question. Don't say next year maybe. Say a date. After Chang left she called back: "Mum, the fifteenth of October, after the last batch, I'm coming home." "She cried. She said it's the first time I've given a date." Rose, through Nora: "This September's rain, don't make me watch it alone." She is ninety-one. How many more Septembers?
10. Next. Nora: cutting starts 20 August; the vine in row five has set a good crop; if you're coming, arrive the eighteenth. Fresno cutting 20 August; Turpan hanging around the twenty-second; Fresno trays in September; Turpan taking down at the turn of September and October. The two ends' dates collide.

"The bronze figure can examine whether you needle accurately; it can't examine whether you should needle."
In 1026–27 the Song court physician Wang Weiyi standardised the locations of acupuncture points, which had drifted through centuries of hand-copied texts, and cast two life-size bronze figures marked with every point. A later account describes how they were used in examinations: the figure was coated in wax and filled with mercury, and a candidate who needled a point precisely would draw mercury, while a slight miss struck metal.
It is an early example of an objective test of a skilled hand, and it marks the boundary of such tests. The figure could verify precision; it could not diagnose, because it could not be ill. Choosing the right point for the right patient remained a human judgment.
Modern instruments in agriculture and industry sit on the same boundary. A sensor that never tires can outperform an expert at three in the morning, and should be believed there. But the best use of the instrument is often not to replace the hand but to check it, recording the gap between what the hand says and what the machine measures, so that drift in either can be caught.
"If it grows, either the machine is broken or the hand has changed. Check the machine first, then the hand."
