English Mirror: "Fei Wei said: First learn not to blink; then we can talk about shooting. Ji Chang went home and lay on his back under his wife's loom, his eyes fixed on the treadle as it rose and fell. After two years, even if an awl point came at the corner of his eye, he did not blink." — "Fei Wei said: Not yet. You must learn to see. When you can see the small as large and the faint as plain, come and tell me. Ji Chang hung a louse by a hair in his window and gazed at it facing south. Within ten days it grew larger; after three years it was as big as a cartwheel. When he looked at other things, they were all hills and mountains." — "Then with a bow of Yan horn and an arrow of northern reed he shot it, and pierced the louse through the heart without breaking the hair. He told Fei Wei, who leapt up and beat his breast: You have it!"

Twelfth of April, 2037, morning, Aksu, the purchasing station. In April the station is empty. What came in by the truckload last autumn has mostly gone; the remainder is stacked in the warehouse to the rafters. The scale idle, a film of dust on the pan. People in only one place: the long tables outside the warehouse door, four women with a big winnowing basket each, tipping out the leftover stock and picking through it one raisin at a time, rotten, shrivelled, stuck together, sandy. Sister Liu at her desk at the far end of the scale, working an abacus, looking up now and then at the sorting table.

Eli met me at the gate last night: "Uncle Marco, I've thought for over a month and still can't think." He meant He Yuan: seven months with him since September; stage one of Eli's card, stand and watch, no photos, no notes, no questions, passed in three weeks; stages two and three passed too. At stage four he should start pinching. Eli hasn't let him. Why? "He watches carefully, but he watches big things. The truck, the bags, where my hand goes, which bag I touch first. Ask him where I'll touch first on the next truck and he's never wrong. But the small things he doesn't see. Put a raisin in his palm and he glances and puts it down: done. I know he isn't done. But I can't say what it is he hasn't seen."

He Yuan by the sorting table, standing, hands in his pockets, twenty-three and tall. He watched carefully. But every little while his eyes lifted from the baskets to the yard, the gate, the sky. Down again. Up again. That night, alone in the little room behind the scale with Eli's card, worn at the edges, a pencilled question mark beside stage four, I looked up at a movement by the window: a raisin hung from the window frame on a thread so fine it seemed to float; opposite it a thin, narrow-faced man in a coarse short jacket, an unstrung bow at his waist, staring at it without blinking. I watched him a long time. He did not blink once. Eyes still on the raisin: "The young man you're teaching blinks too much." Ji Chang. — M.

Memo to file. Aksu, 12 April – 8 May 2037. Learning to see before learning to do.

1. The problem. He Yuan passed three stages of Eli's card in seven months. He sees big things perfectly and small things not at all: a raisin in his palm is "done" in a glance. At the sorting table his eyes leave the baskets every minute.

2. Not blinking. Ji Chang went to Fei Wei to learn archery and was told: first learn not to blink. He lay under his wife's loom, eyes on the treadle rising and falling an inch from them. At first he blinked every time; after two years an awl point at the corner of his eye didn't make him blink. My mother's treadle, worn to bright iron; her foot, up and down, thirteen years; the sound on the stairs when I was ten.

3. Seeing small as large. Not yet, said Fei Wei: learn to see the small as large and the faint as plain. A louse on an ox-tail hair in the window; in ten days it grew; in three years it was the size of a cartwheel, and everything else looked like mountains. "The louse didn't change. My eyes learned to stop on one small thing. Once they stop, the things on it come out one by one, its legs, its belly, the lines on it; when enough things have come out, it's big in your eyes." Then one arrow through the louse's heart without breaking the hair, and Fei Wei leapt and beat his breast: you have it.

4. Diagnosis. "His eyes aren't steady. Unsteady eyes see everything in one glance, and a glance sees only big things. The four women can see at a glance which raisin is rotten. What you want him to learn is how one sound raisin differs from another sound raisin. That's small. You don't see it at a glance. You have to stop, and stop a long time."

5. The line. "First learn not to blink; then learn to see the small as large. When the eyes are steady, the hand has somewhere to go." I learned the other way: Yiming handed me a raisin and I pinched for three days before I felt the first thing. Had I learned to look first, it might not have taken three days.

6. The inserted stage. Eli added a stage between three and four: look. One raisin a day hung in the window, an hour, then draw it. No pinching, no notes, no questions. Move on when you can draw twenty things on one raisin. Eyes off it once and you start again. "Look at a raisin for an hour? What is there to look at for an hour?" No answer; a thread, a window frame, a sheet of paper, a pencil, a stool. Sit.

7. The count. Day one: three things (round, wrinkled, a dot at one end). Day two: five (the wrinkles slant, they aren't random; one side is shinier). Day four: ten minutes in, his eyes followed a truck into the yard. "Start again." Day ten: eleven. Day twenty: seventeen. Day twenty-six: twenty-three, drawn half a page wide with labelled lines: the wrinkles slant down from the stem scar; a dark brown dot on the scar; darker near the scar, paler at the far end; one side shinier, the side that faced the hole in the wall; a translucent patch against the window; three white spots of sugar on the skin; a fine crack on the back. Eli: "I see eleven." He Yuan: was the crack from drying or from bagging? Eli didn't know. "Then I'll ask Grandpa Luo."

8. Luo. Retired, still drops by with vegetables for Sister Liu. He stood a long time at the door watching He Yuan staring at a hanging raisin. "Master He used to look like that. I came to the station at eighteen and he was still here; he could look at one raisin half a day and then say whose drying house it came from and which wall it hung on. I laughed at him then."

9. The same raisin. On day twelve Eli, without saying so, hung the day-one raisin again. Twelve things. Beside it, the day-one drawing: three. "It's the same one?" The same one. The louse didn't change.

10. The sorter. The oldest of the four women, whose fingers never stop, stood at the door one noon: "We've picked all our lives; we know at a glance which one is rotten. How one good one differs from another good one, we can't say either. That's what the boy is learning?" The next day she had him sit beside her for an hour. "She doesn't look for the rotten ones. She looks at the good ones going past, and when one isn't like the ones before it, her hand stops." Eli: all these years and I never thought of that. After that the women called him "the one who looks." Shown the twenty-three: the three sugar spots she'd seen at a glance; the rest she couldn't see.

11. Luo, twice more. The crack: pressed cracks have straight edges, like a knife cut; drying cracks have ragged edges, torn a little at a time. "Look again with those eyes of yours." "It's ragged." That afternoon Eli put a raisin in He Yuan's palm: pinch. A long pause. "The cracked side is softer." Eli ticked the inserted stage, stood up, took two steps, sat down, slapped the table: tomorrow, stage four; first pinch number one and number five. Luo, seeing the thread in the window: "Don't give him a magnifying glass. What you see under a magnifying glass belongs to the glass." Eli at the gate: next time I train someone, I'll start with this stage.

12. His grandfather. That night He Yuan at my door: Grandpa Luo says my grandfather looked like that; is my grandfather in your book? The eleventh rule, "who will keep these twelve", and in small type: Master He, 1992. He read it a long time under the lamp. "He wrote it before I was born." It was forty-three years before someone wrote "done" after it. Next morning he was first in. He also asked whether the book says anything about cracks. No. "Can I write a page?" The last page belongs to whoever uses the book.

13. Elsewhere. Sunday 2 May, my mother, in the fourteenth notebook after He Yuan's name: looks at one raisin for an hour. "My first month at the machine the boss wouldn't let me near good cloth; I watched others treadle for a month, then got a rag to sew straight lines on. I was impatient. Later my seams were straighter than anyone's." Eli sent a photo of the revised card to Shao Min: "My two will have to look first too."

14. Next. Lu Xiao from Shanxian: she read Chang Yushan my draft page, the list of things machines judge better than hands. "He says you've got one of them backwards."

"First learn not to blink; then learn to see the small as large. When the eyes are steady, the hand has somewhere to go."
In a story from the Liezi, Ji Chang asks the archer Fei Wei to teach him to shoot and is told to learn not to blink first. He spends two years lying under his wife's loom with the treadle moving in front of his eyes. Then he is told to learn to see: he hangs a louse in his window and stares at it for three years until it looks as large as a cartwheel. Only then does he pick up a bow, and he shoots the louse through the heart.
The story is about the order of skills. Beginners are eager to act, and their early actions are mostly noise, because they cannot yet perceive what matters. Perception is trained by sustained attention to one small thing: the details emerge one by one until the thing "grows" in the eye.
The same holds in markets, where decisions made before one can read the signal are indistinguishable from guesses. Training attention before action is slower at first and faster overall.
"The louse didn't change. My eyes learned to stop on one small thing."
