English Mirror: "A man had a fine horse to sell. Three mornings running he stood in the market and nobody took any notice. He went to Bo Le and said: I have a fine horse I want to sell; three mornings I have stood in the market and no one has said a word to me. Would you walk round it once, and look back at it as you leave? I will give you a day's takings. Bo Le walked round the horse, and looked back at it as he left; and in one morning the horse's price rose tenfold." — "Only when there is a Bo Le are there thousand-li horses. Thousand-li horses are common; Bo Les are not." — (Later tradition adds that Bo Le's son took his father's book on judging horses and, following its description, a high forehead, bright eyes, hooves like stacked cakes of yeast, went looking and brought back a toad. Bo Le laughed: this horse is a good jumper, but you can't ride it.)

Twenty-seventh of March, 2037, two in the afternoon, Shanghai. Shao Min at the gate with a brown envelope, its flap taped twice. "Both tables' numbers are inside. I had quality control collect team two's; I haven't looked at a sheet. If I'd looked first, I'd have said it differently to you." Thin, when I squeezed it. Zhao Guo: compare it with the field beside it and it's the ground that says so. The field beside it was in that envelope.
The tasting room on the third floor: windows down one side, a white wall down the other, a row of fluorescent tubes overhead. Two long tables. By the window, Master Gu's five: five trays, five blindfolds folded square. By the wall, team two: five people from another warehouse who handle incoming goods. A year ago Shao Min asked their leader: pinch your own way this year, and once a month do it blindfolded like upstairs and record it. Why? "You're the field next door." He didn't understand, but agreed. Twelve sessions, not one missed.
Two sheets. Upstairs: March 2036, 38 per cent agreement; March 2037, 74. Team two, no Essentials: 41, then 57. Upstairs rose 36 points. Team two rose 16 on practice alone: five people blindfolded once a month for a year, without a page of any book. The Essentials' share of the 36: about 20. "Half," said Shao Min. A bit more than half. "I told two thousand suppliers 38 to 74. I overstated it by half." The number was right, I said. What nobody knew then was where half of it came from. Under the sheets: of the 74, about 20 is the Essentials, about 16 is practice, and 38 agreed from the start. And 26 still doesn't agree today.
That night, alone with the records of two young hires, Zhou, twenty-three, and Qin, twenty-four, taken on last autumn to replace Master Gu, given a copy of the Essentials each and told to learn from the book. Their numbers climbed steadily, except on the second grade, the greenish one, which drifted toward the third for both of them. The page for grade two is Alim's drawing, coloured pencil layer on layer, yellow with a trace of green. Under the fluorescent tubes the sample was greener than the drawing, green going on blue. Alim drew it in the doorway of house two in the afternoon, sunlight falling through the holes in the wall. At the window, a tall, slightly stooped old man in a coarse robe with a small bronze bell on a leather cord at his waist, holding the raisin up to the dark: "Those two young ones are looking at the book, not the goods." Sun Yang, called Bo Le. — M.
Memo to file. Shanghai, 27–28 March 2037. Attribution, the toad, and one look back.
1. The control. Upstairs, with the Essentials: 38% → 74% blind agreement. Team two, same company, same monthly blindfold sessions, no Essentials: 41% → 57%. Practice alone: +16. The Essentials' net effect: about +20. Shao Min told two thousand suppliers 38 to 74; the number was true and half the story. She kept the envelope sealed until I came, so neither of us could shade the reading.
2. The residual. Of the 74: roughly 38 agreed from the start, 16 practice, 20 the Essentials. Twenty-six points still don't agree. That is the next page's work, not a footnote.
3. The drift. Two young hires learning from the book alone: steady gains except grade two, which slid toward grade three for both. The drawing was made in the afternoon light of a Turpan drying house; the tasting room is lit by fluorescent tubes, under which the same raisin looks greener. They matched the colour on the page under a different light.
4. The precedent. A horse stands three mornings unnoticed; the seller begs Bo Le to walk round it and look back once as he leaves; its price rises tenfold in a morning. "The horse is the same horse. What rose was the look, because people knew I could see." Suppliers believed Shao Min's number because five masters stood behind it. Master Gu's hands were that look, and he retires tomorrow.
5. The toad. Bo Le wrote down his method for his son: a good horse has a high forehead, bright eyes, hooves like stacked cakes of yeast. The son came back with a toad: the forehead high, the eyes bright, the hooves "near enough". "Every sentence in the book was right, and following every sentence he brought back a toad. When I wrote high forehead I had hundreds of foreheads in my mind; he had only the words." In what light was the page drawn? Drying-house light. In what light is this room? "The book is written by someone who knows horses. To look for a horse by the book, someone who knows horses must first show you a real one." Page one of the Essentials: elsewhere, look at your own ground first. The light in this room is Shanghai's ground.
6. Bo Le also grows old. How many pairs of eyes remain after tomorrow? Four; Master Chen goes the year after. "Before a Bo Le goes, his job isn't to look at more horses. It's to have those after him look at a few real ones with him."
7. The last day. Master Gu didn't pinch; he watched two young ones pinch twenty bags blindfolded, silent, touching nothing. Then: seventh, twelfth, nineteenth, you said grade three; they're grade two. "The picture in the book..." He opened the blinds, tipped a bag into his palm in the sunlight: yellow with a trace of green, exactly like the page. "The book isn't wrong. The lamps in this room are. For this grade don't trust your eyes; close them and pinch. Does it come back slowly? Slowly means two; three comes back fast. Eyes lie to you; the hand doesn't."
8. His page. At noon he asked for the Essentials and turned to the blank last page, the one that belongs to whoever uses the book. Three lines: in Shanghai the tasting room has fluorescent lights; for grades two and three, don't judge by colour, close your eyes and pinch, go by how fast it comes back. By the time the goods reach Shanghai the stems are gone; the stem entries don't apply here. Look at the stem scar instead: where the spot is darker, the fruit had more sun. Signed with one character: Gu. The first thing he ever wrote in the book. "Give it to the two young ones." To me, at four: "Last year I said this book was useless. I was half wrong. The other half I wasn't: what a book can't teach, someone has to show." At the door he looked back once at the window table and the two young ones. Just once.
9. Alpha and beta. On Wall Street I measured how much of a fund manager's return was skill and how much the market. If the market rose sixteen and he rose sixteen, that isn't skill; only the part above it counts. Team two is the market. Shao Min chose team two because the two groups never mix; neither had seen how the other pinches. She will write to the two thousand suppliers again: half the book, half practice, and over a fifth that nobody can yet explain. "Say too little and they'll still believe me; say too much and next time they won't." Next year team two uses the Essentials and upstairs learns team two's trick, so there will be no field next door. "Then we'll find another."
10. The nose. Team two's grades two and three were better separated than upstairs. Their leader, Pan: we don't go by colour, or only by pinching; we smell. Grade three's sweetness hits you when the bag opens; grade two's is faint and you have to lean in. An old hand on her team could name the supplier by smell with his eyes shut; they laughed at him, then learned it. Master Gu: "That isn't in the book." He added a line under his signature: team two, Leader Pan: grades two and three, open the bag and smell; three is strong, two is faint. "This line is hers." "Our names are in the book too?" "They are." Some of the unexplained 26 points may live in team two's noses.
11. Loose ends. Bo Le: did Gu ever judge wrong? He says never. "Then there's one thing he still hasn't learned: how to know when he's wrong." The next day Gu said he'd been half wrong about the book. On Abdurehman's sealed half, unmoved at 95.8: "Not moving is right. When a thing reaches its point, it stops." Lu Xiao sent her regards to her first master: "That girl has quick hands." Next summer the two young ones go to Shanxian for a month beside the drying houses, to see what light the page was drawn in. Alim will draw a second grade-two page under fluorescent tubes, for Shanghai.
12. Next. Eli: He Yuan wants to learn to pinch. I haven't let him; I've set him to something else first. But I can't think what to set him to first.

"The book is written by someone who knows horses. To look for a horse by the book, someone who knows horses must first show you a real one."
Bo Le, a figure of the Spring and Autumn period, became the Chinese archetype of the expert judge: a horse ignored in the market sold for ten times the price after he merely walked round it and looked back. A later anecdote gave him a son who tried to find a fine horse by following his father's written description and returned with a toad, which matched the words tolerably well.
Both stories bear on codifying expertise. Much of an expert's value lies in reputation, the market's belief that their judgment is sound; when the expert retires, that belief does not transfer to a manual. And a manual used without a teacher is followed literally, in conditions its author never considered, such as a different light.
Measuring whether a new method works requires a comparison group doing everything else the same. Without one, improvement from simple practice is credited to the method. In this chapter a sealed envelope and a second team that never saw the manual showed that about half the gain would have happened anyway.
