English Mirror: "Fan Shi said to Zhang Shao: In two years I shall come back this way; I will call to pay my respects to your mother and see your children. So together they fixed the day." — "As the day drew near, Zhang told his mother everything and asked her to prepare food to await him. His mother said: Two years apart, a promise made a thousand li away; how can you be so sure of him? He answered: Fan is a man of his word; he will not fail. She said: If so, I will brew wine for you. On that very day Fan arrived, came up into the hall, bowed, drank, and they parted after a day of happiness."

Ninth of March, 2037, eleven at night, Chengdu airport. The Urumqi flight went from on time to delayed, then to a line of small print: high winds at destination, departure time to be confirmed. Tomorrow was the tenth. Urumqi to Turpan by car: a hundred and eighty kilometres, two and a half hours. Land before three and I'd arrive before dawn; fly tomorrow noon and I wouldn't. To Alim: the plane's late; I'll be there, probably in the morning. "Dad's asleep. I'll tell him in the morning. Don't rush; a bit late doesn't matter." A bit late does matter. Last year I told a man in a wheelchair: every year you're still here, we'll weigh it. Every year means every tenth of March.

Boarding at twenty past midnight; Urumqi at ten past one on the tenth. The cabin door opened on a wind that was dry, cold and full of sand, and hurt. A driver in a taxi: this hour, this wind, to Turpan? Yes. "The Dabancheng stretch is windy; I'll have to go slow." Go slow. The road black on both sides, sand streaming across it from left to right in the headlights; at Dabancheng the wind poured out of the pass and the car shook; the turbines turned in the dark, invisible, only the roar. I pressed my left shirt pocket: my father's square of board, flat under the cloth.

At twenty past four, Alim's village: no lights, two barks, silence. I didn't knock. I sat on the stone outside the gate with my collar up. Dawn wouldn't come until after eight. The wind dropped; more stars than Chengdu, more than New Jersey. A little after five, stiff from the stone, I walked a few steps along the dirt road, and a man came up it: middle-aged, a thick old robe dusty to the hem, a bundle on his back, a staff, walking steadily as if he'd come a long way and had a long way still to go. He looked at my case and at the closed gate. "Did you hurry to be here today?" Yes. "So did I." Fan Shi, courtesy name Juqing. — M.

Memo to file. Turpan, 10 March 2037. The date kept, and what it's for.

1. The night. Flight delayed by wind at Urumqi; landed 1:10 a.m.; a taxi through the Dabancheng gap, the car shaking. Village at 4:20. Didn't knock. Sat on the stone outside the gate until the kitchen window lit at seven.

2. The precedent. Two students part in the capital, a thousand li between their homes. Fan tells Zhang: in two years I'll come to your house, pay respects to your mother, see your children. They fix the day. As it approaches, Zhang asks his mother to kill a chicken and cook millet. Her doubt: two years, a thousand li, how can you be so sure? "He is a man of his word." Then I'll brew wine. On the day he came, bowed, drank, ate, and left. Just one meal.

3. What he was keeping faith with. "Not the meal. His mother. She had to kill a chicken and brew wine; she had to know the day was real. A day late and the chicken is wasted and the wine brewed for nothing, and next time she won't believe. If she doesn't, her son has to argue with her, and he'd be arguing for me."

4. The line. "Promising a date isn't promising to come. It's promising that on that day the person waiting won't have to guess." Eight years of "next year maybe" made my mother guess every year which next year I meant. This family doesn't have to guess about the tenth of March. My mother won't have to guess about 3 February 2038.

5. Early. Alim at the gate: you didn't knock? "He wasn't asleep. He woke at five and had me wheel him to the doorway, facing the gate. I told him the plane was late, maybe noon. He shook his head and wrote one character with his left hand: early." His left hand took mine and didn't let go.

6. The weighing. The 2031 sealed half: 96.4 (2033), 96.1, 95.9, 95.8 (2036), and this year 95.8. It has stopped moving. He wrote one character, slowly: steady. The 2035 sealed half, split eighty-one days late last year: 12.7 g then, 12.6 now. The two 2036 strings on the doorframe, left picked by day by Alim, right picked by night by Aynur, split today, on the day: half back on each nail, half sealed. Both bags labelled, in Alim's hand: not late. Four bags side by side in the cabinet; he watched the door close.

7. The polo. Eleven o'clock: a great plate of yellow, glossy rice, big pieces of mutton, carrots in sticks, whole soft cloves of garlic. Alim fed his father spoonful by spoonful. Aynur: we said last year there'd be polo this year; you came, so the pot wasn't cooked for nothing. The chicken and the wine had to know the day was real.

8. Two weeks in Chengdu. Sunday 22 February at eight in the evening New Jersey, nine on Monday morning for me: her face at the right distance, the kitchen clock behind her, a new grey sweater the neighbour knitted. A bag of dumplings eaten. Eli sent a photo of himself and He Yuan outside the station, "Hello, Auntie"; the neighbour's son helped her reply with a smile; in the fourteenth notebook, after Eli's name, she made a mark. 1 March: her back is better, she may go to the supermarket on her own; the four o'clock light every day, and the neighbour looks every day. "What time will you get there on the tenth?" Morning. "Then you have to leave on the ninth. Don't miss it." Nora: the ribbon's still there; a wet February, the ground has drunk its fill, the start of a good year; "She says she's waiting for you in September."

9. Two doors at once. At half past four in Turpan it was half past three in New Jersey. At five my phone lit: the porch light, on, before dark. "On." I was sitting outside one closed gate, looking at the light over another door. The taxi driver, before he left: nobody meeting you? They're asleep; I'll knock when it's light. "Wait in the car; I won't charge for the waiting." Go home; the wind's strong on the road.

10. More of Fan Shi. Twenty-odd days on the road, three lost to rain, then hurrying out before dawn. "Two years, a thousand li, not one letter between. Not like you: say something here and it's there at once." Zhang didn't come out to meet him: "I knew you'd come today." Leaving, the mother at the door: "I've killed chickens all my life; this one I killed with the easiest mind." If he truly couldn't make it? "Send word ahead: late by so many days, arriving on such a day. You can't let people kill a chicken for nothing." Alim's "a bit late doesn't matter" was kindness to me; "if you'd been late, his father would have sat there a day for nothing." How many dates this year? The tenth here; 27 March, Shanghai; August and September, California; 3 February next year, New Jersey. "Five dates; behind each one, somebody waiting. What you're counting isn't days, it's people."

11. After lunch. Aynur put the biggest piece, on the bone, on my plate: the guest gets the best. Eli and He Yuan on video from the Aksu station. He Yuan: next tenth of March, can I come and help weigh? Alim: first learn to count from both ends to the middle. Eli: my first year I was only allowed to stand and watch. To Aynur, my mother's greetings. Is her back better? It is. From the inner room a white handkerchief embroidered in green with vine leaves: "for your mother; someone who works at night needs a handkerchief." Then brick tea and that morning's naan, and Abdurehman lifted his left hand toward the door: he wanted me to wheel him to house three. Two strings on the doorframe, the half of each half. He looked a long time and wrote two characters: next year. Next tenth of March, I said. He nodded. To my mother at midnight her time: he wrote "early", then "steady". Pages turning. "I've written it down." Guli at the gate: next tenth of March, I'll come back to weigh.

12. Next. Shao Min: Master Gu's last day is 28 March; he wants to see me before he retires. And the other table has been found: a team of five that never saw the Essentials, pinching for a year. "The numbers from both tables are with me. I haven't looked. I'll wait and look with you."

"Promising a date isn't promising to come. It's promising that on that day the person waiting won't have to guess."
The History of the Later Han tells of Fan Shi, who parted from a fellow student and promised to visit his family on a fixed day two years later, a thousand li away. As the day approached his friend asked his mother to kill a chicken and prepare millet. She doubted anyone would keep such a promise; her son insisted his friend was a man of his word; she brewed wine. Fan arrived on the day. "Chicken and millet" became a Chinese byword for a promise kept between friends.
The story's real subject is the person who waits. A promise with a date turns an open question into a plan: the host can prepare, stop wondering, and defend the guest's reliability to others. A vague promise ("next year, maybe") keeps the other person guessing, year after year, however sincere it is.
In business the same property is called credibility, and it is built less by grand commitments than by small dates reliably kept, so that counterparties no longer need to check.
"You came, so the pot wasn't cooked for nothing."
