English Mirror: Cao Chong, Prince Ai of Deng, styled Cangshu, was perceptive and precocious as a small child; at five or six his understanding reached as far as a grown man's. — Sun Quan once sent a giant elephant, and the Grand Progenitor wished to know its weight. He asked all his officers; none could find the way. Chong said: put the elephant on a large boat and mark where the water comes to; then load the boat with things that can be weighed until it reaches the mark, and you will know. — The Grand Progenitor's saddle, kept in the storehouse, was gnawed by rats, and the storekeeper feared he would surely die … Chong pierced his own robe with a knife so that it looked rat-gnawed … The Grand Progenitor laughed: my son's robe, right beside him, was gnawed — how much more a saddle hung on a pillar? And he asked nothing further. — Such was Chong's kindness and discernment. Of those who should have been punished, but whom Chong quietly spoke for, dozens owed their pardon to him.

Tenth of March, 2036, ten in the morning, Turpan. At the gate Marco put his hand into his inside pocket; the card was there — one character, wait. Only when he had touched it did he push the gate. On house three's frame, the string Alim chose in December, a shade darker after three months. The right-hand nail empty, still brighter than the old one on the left. In the lower middle of the string, gaps — little stalks with no grapes on them. Alim, seeing him look: sparrows. A snow in January, nothing on the ground; they came in under the frame and took seven. By the time I saw it they'd finished. He said it to the empty stalks, not to me. He had said it to himself many times. In the front room by the stove, his father in the wheelchair, thinner this winter, awake less than asleep now — but awake at seven today, watching the door. "He knows it's the tenth." On the table: a kitchen scale reading to a tenth of a gram; the sealed bag 2031, house three, reserve; beside it the sealed half-string taken down in December. Guli, back from Urumqi as last year, with a notebook of every tenth-of-March weight, copied year by year. I had fixed this one trip for the year. Not to buy, not to ask; to keep a sentence from four years ago.
Cao Chong came before the weighing. A child, twelve or thirteen, a pale little robe with sleeves too short, both hands holding a small wooden boat as long as his forearm; a fine line cut along its side; a few pebbles in the hold. From the doorway he looked at the scale, at the two sealed bags, and through the door at the string on house three's frame: what you're weighing today isn't on the table. Sir, your name? He smiled, as if unused to being called sir. Cao Chong.
He set the boat on the threshold and touched the line. When I was small someone sent an elephant, and my father wanted its weight. None of the grown men knew how — where is there a scale that big? I said: drive it onto a big boat, mark where the boat sinks to, drive it off, load stones until the boat sinks to the line again. Stones can be weighed. The stones weigh what the elephant weighs. The elephant can't go on the scale; the boat can go on the water. What can't be weighed, find something that can, and make it sink the same. And: one thing people often miss when they learn it. The line must be cut while the elephant is standing on the boat. Cut it after it's off and you've marked an empty boat. Cut it a little later and the water has moved, the boat has rocked — you've marked a line that's about right. And, and I picked up the pen: the line can only be cut true once — the moment the thing goes on.
I looked at the table. The 2031 cupboard half, split and sewn on 11 March 2032 — that day was the cutting of the line. For four years its stillness is what measured how much the frame half changed. Then I looked out at the 2035 string, hung whole on 20 December. Not split. No cupboard half. How will anyone measure how it changes? What will it be compared with in four years? The elephant has stood on the boat three months, and nobody cut the line. Alim went red. I forgot. The day my father wrote that character my head went empty; I only wanted to hang it. I never thought of the half. Sparrows took seven and I didn't split it either. The first three months of this string, I've spoiled it twice. Before I could speak the boy did. My father had a saddle in the storehouse; rats gnawed it. The rules were harsh; the keeper thought he would die, wanted to confess, feared that confessing wouldn't save him. I told him to wait three days. I cut holes in my own robe like rat-bites and went to my father looking worried; he asked why; I said people say it's bad luck when rats gnaw your clothes. He said: nonsense, don't worry. Then the keeper reported the saddle. My father laughed: my son's robe was gnawed right beside him — how much more a saddle on a pillar. He asked nothing. And: rats gnawing things is the rats' business. Sparrows pecking grapes is the sparrows'. If that keeper had confessed that day, every time something went missing afterwards he would first wonder whether he deserved to die. Five times into the book: what the weather and the rats and the sparrows spoil, write it down and be done; don't let the one who keeps the thing confess on their behalf. Can it still be split? The boy drew with his finger, just above the old line, a second line a hair higher. It can; but it isn't December's line any more. Write on the bag the day it was hung, the day it was split, how long between, how many the sparrows took. A line cut late: write how late. Whoever measures later will allow for it. — M.
Memo to file. Turpan, 10–12 March 2036. The one fixed trip of the year. A baseline that was never taken, taken eighty-one days late and labelled as such.
1. The annual weighing (the promise). Sealed 2031 cupboard half: 96.4 g (2033), 96.1 (2034), 95.9 (2035), 95.8 (2036). Four years sealed, −0.6 g, under 1%; the frame half lost more than ten per cent over four and a half years. The sealed half is the waterline. He looked at the number a long time and touched the pan's rim. Guli's line: 10 March 2036, 95.8 — and after it, "Dad has seen it."
2. The gap I found. The 2035 reference string went up whole on 20 December. No sealed half — so no baseline against which its ageing can ever be measured. The precedent: an elephant weighed by marking the boat's waterline and then loading stones to the mark. The mark must be cut while the elephant is aboard. After, you mark an empty boat; a little later, a line that's "about right."
3. Remedy, with disclosure. Split on 10 March by the 2032 method (counting in from both ends): 46 grapes (53 less 7 taken by sparrows) → 23 + 23. Label: 2035, house three, chosen by Alim, reserve. Hung 20 Dec 2035; split 10 Mar 2036 — 81 days late. Seven taken by sparrows before splitting, January. Line cut late; whoever measures later, allow for it. A late baseline, labelled late, is usable. An unlabelled one is a trap.
3a. The measurement from now on. Each tenth of March, three weighings: his father's sealed half, Alim's sealed half, and Alim's half on the frame. The two strings weigh differently, so never compare them directly: compare each with its own sealed half, as a share. Alim: like the boat — each has its own line. Asked whether his bag should be weighed every year: "Yes. Until the year my father's is weighed for the last time, and then on."
4. Blame. Alim: "The first three months, I've spoiled it twice." The precedent's second story: a storekeeper about to confess to rats gnawing a saddle; the prince made the damage ordinary and the keeper was never questioned. What weather, rats and sparrows spoil — record it and be done. A keeper who confesses for the sparrows will, forever after, suspect himself first. Recorded on the tag as a condition, not a fault.
5. What the father did. When Alim went to put the new sealed half in the cupboard, he reached for it, pinched it once through the cloth, and moved it beside the 2031 bag at his hand — two bags side by side, one old, one new, the same cloth — and rested his hand on both. Both now in the cupboard together. On the cupboard door: change, and this bag we will not touch; every year you are still here, we will weigh it.
5a. The first to ask. At supper Alim's mother asked, through him, whether my mother is well — the first time in seven years anyone in that yard has asked. Her back isn't good, otherwise fine. "Then you should go back and see her." I didn't answer.
6. The other promise. My mother, New Jersey, 8 a.m. her time, twice a month for eight years: when are you coming back? For eight years: next year, maybe. Tonight: "The end of this year." — "You said the end of the year, not next year maybe." — "The end of the year." — "Good." In the book: the line on that boat should have been cut the day I left, eight years ago. I didn't cut it. Cutting it today, eight years late. Write down how late.
7. Next. Shanghai, 12 March: "Five suppliers chosen, the wooden model built. But our five old masters, blindfolded, can't agree on the grades. We followed your drawings. The drawings don't say what to do when five people can't agree."

"The line can only be cut true once — the moment the thing goes on."
The boy in this chapter is one of the most famous children in Chinese history. At five or six, asked how to weigh an elephant when no scale was large enough, he proposed putting the animal on a boat, marking the waterline, then loading the boat with stones until it sank to the same mark and weighing the stones. The story is usually told as a lesson in cleverness: measure indirectly by substitution.
The part that is easy to miss is timing. The mark is only useful if it is cut while the elephant is standing on the boat. Cut it afterwards and you have marked an empty boat; cut it a little later and you have marked a line that is merely approximate. Every comparison you make afterwards inherits the error.
Anyone who measures change over time knows this problem under other names: the baseline. A reference sample must be taken and sealed at the moment the thing it describes begins. Forget, and years of later measurement have nothing to stand on. The honest repair is not to pretend the baseline was taken on time. It is to take it late and write down exactly how late, so that later readers can allow for it.
The same history records a second story about him: he saved a storekeeper from punishment after rats gnawed a saddle, by making the damage look ordinary. It belongs beside the first. What weather and animals spoil should be recorded as conditions, not confessed as faults. A keeper made to confess for the rats will blame himself for everything afterwards.
What the weather and the rats and the sparrows spoil, write it down and be done; don't let the one who keeps the thing confess on their behalf.
