English Mirror: The principles of the pulse are subtle and fine; their forms are hard to tell apart. Wiry and tight, floating and hollow — they shade into one another. In the mind they are easy to understand; under the fingers they are hard to make out. — Call a deep pulse a hidden one, and the treatment will be wrong for good; take a moderate pulse for a slow one, and danger follows at once. How much more when several signs appear together, and different illnesses share the same pulse! — Floating resembles hollow; wiry resembles tight; slippery resembles rapid; drumskin resembles replete; deep resembles hidden; faint resembles rough; soft resembles weak; moderate resembles slow.

Eighth of April, 2036, nine in the morning, Jiading, Shanghai. A new cold store, walls painted white, four refrigerated trucks at the door. Shao Min waiting: forty-eight, short hair, a dark blue work jacket with the company name on the chest. "Mr Ma, didn't you say you wouldn't come?" — "I said the thing doesn't move. You called; I came." — "Then come and see our machine not turning."
The tasting room, partitioned out of the cold store: white walls, white light, a long table under a white cloth. Five men in white coats, all past fifty-five: Gu, sixty-three, twenty-six years with the company; Chen, sixty-one, twenty-two; Feng, fifty-nine, eighteen, from another company; two Xus, Big Xu fifty-eight and Little Xu fifty-five, not related. Over a hundred years between them. "Tens of thousands of tonnes a year, graded by these five pairs of hands. Gu retires next year, Chen the year after. The young can't take over. So we want that system." March's trial: five suppliers, all in Shanghan, twenty bags each, a hundred bags, each graded blind one to five by all five. All five identical on thirty-eight bags. "Thirty-eight per cent. We built the model from your drawings, made our ruler — and the five of them can't even agree which bag belongs in slot three. Send us a set of the Turpan ruler and let us align to that?" I didn't answer at once.
Wang Shuhe came in at ten, during the second round. Forties, thin, an old blue-green robe, hair knotted. Just inside the door he laid three fingers of his right hand on his own left wrist and stood still — as if, on entering, he must first take his own pulse. Then he watched the five pairs of hands: Gu three fingers, one pinch and release; Chen two, pinch and rub; Feng raising each to the light before pinching though blindfolded; the two Xus alike, thumb and middle finger, forefinger lifted. Then: five men's fingers touch the same thing and say five things.
Behind me as I compared the sheets: don't look at the thirty-eight per cent; look at how the sixty-two disagree. Of sixty-two, fifty-three differ by one grade, nine by two, none by three or more. Identical 38; within one grade 91. They don't fail to agree. They fail to agree on adjacent grades. He nodded. When I wrote my pulse book it was the same. Twenty-four pulses, each described — that can be done. Floating: there at the lightest touch, less when pressed. Deep: absent to the light touch, there when pressed. Floating and deep, no one confuses. What people confuse is floating and hollow, deep and hidden, moderate and slow — the neighbours, the look-alikes. I wrote in the preface: easy in the mind, hard under the fingers. Does it matter? Take deep for hidden and the prescription is wrong for good. Take moderate for slow and the patient is in danger. The pulses you can tell apart, however well described, save no one. What saves people is the few pairs you can't. Of the fifty-three one-grade splits: thirty-one between three and four; fourteen between two and three; eight between four and five; none between one and two. At the end of my book there's a passage that doesn't describe any pulse. It lists eight pairs: floating resembles hollow, wiry resembles tight … moderate resembles slow. Its purpose: this is where you will go wrong. For each pair, know what you use to separate them. And, and I picked up the pen: what must be written clearly is not what each grade is like, but how you tell two neighbouring grades apart.
At lunch, how do you separate three from four? Gu: "Springiness — a four pushes back, a three doesn't." Chen: "Tackiness — rub it; sticky is three." Feng: "Grit — a four has a faint sandiness under the skin." Big Xu: "Whether it pushes back, like Gu." Little Xu: "I learned from Big Xu." Five men, four words — as four old men in Turpan once named the same thing four ways. Shao Min: "Master Gu, who taught you springiness?" — "Old Sun. He trained me when I joined." Big Xu, after a pause: "Old Sun trained me too." She went down the two columns: Gu and Big Xu agree on seventy-one of a hundred. No other pair above forty-six. "Old Sun died six years ago." — M.
Memo to file. Jiading, Shanghai, 8–10 April 2036. The drawings reached their first recipient and stuck exactly where the drawings are silent: aligning people.
1. The data. 100 bags (5 suppliers × 20), 5 raters, blind, grades 1–5. Unanimous 38; within one grade 91; two grades 9; three+ 0. Of the one-grade splits, 3|4: 31; 2|3: 14; 4|5: 8; 1|2: 0. Pairwise agreement: Gu–Big Xu 71 (both trained by the late Old Sun); every other pair ≤46.
2. Diagnosis. Not "the five can't grade." They agree on distant grades and split on neighbours — especially 3|4. The precedent is the classic pulse manual: twenty-four forms described one by one, and then a list of eight confusable pairs. What must be specified is not each grade but the boundary between neighbouring grades. And: five raters, three lineages. The ruler lives in teachers.
3. Request declined again, with a reason they can use. Aligning to the Turpan ruler would teach five men to reproduce Turpan's hands — which won't be in Shanghai when Gu retires. Align your own three lineages first.
4. The afternoon protocol. Only the thirty-one 3|4 bags. Each rater writes privately, before grading, the one criterion he uses to split 3 from 4. Then blind, one word per bag: three or four. Criteria: Gu pushes back; Chen tacky when rubbed; Feng grit under the skin; the Xus pushes back. Feng: "My grit and Gu's push-back are one thing — grit is what makes it push back; I feel the grit, he feels the push." Chen, after a long silence: "Nobody else looks at tackiness. But in twenty-two years, the returned goods that were sticky were threes passed off as fours." Whiteboard: 3|4 criterion one (four raters); criterion two (Chen) — the other four don't use it; returns come mostly from here. Keep both; tomorrow each bag gets both criteria, both reported.
4a. Day two and day eleven. With both criteria felt and reported, unanimity on the thirty-one 3|4 bags rose from 9 to 21. Of the remaining ten, six shared one pattern — pushes back, yet tacky — Gu's group said four, Chen three. Ten days at room temperature: five of the six softened; all five raters then said three. Chen's criterion entered formally: 3|4 criterion two, tacky when rubbed; proposed by Chen 9 April 2036; tested ten days later, five of five. Gu: "From now on I'll rub too." Chen: "Twenty-two years, the first time anyone put goods to the test on my rule. Before, they said my hands sweat." 4b. A tempo nobody had written. Gu's slip: springiness — Old Sun's word. Pinch and count one, two in your head; still pushing back at two, it's a four; gone by one, a three. Big Xu, trained by the same man, has no count. One teacher, two pupils, and only one kept the count to two. At the changing-room door Gu asked whether Little Xu could inherit his springiness: write down what you use, then let Little Xu stand behind you; when he's stood long enough, push the tray across. "Written down, it isn't Old Sun's." "Written down, write that it's Old Sun's." (Shao Min, it turned out, was also trained by Old Sun, for three years, before she moved to purchasing.)
5. Calibrate the instrument before measuring. The physician's parting: before reading another's pulse, know whether your own fingers are accurate today — tired, cold, hungry, they differ. Whiteboard, top line: "Each day before grading, pinch our own ruler bags 1 and 5 once. If wrong, no grading that day." Not in my drawings. Theirs. To be written on the blank page of their copy of the fourth edition.
6. What I never recorded. Asked Alim: what did your father pinch first, before grading? "One from the string on the frame. Every morning, one from the frame first, then that day's goods. I thought you knew." Seven years of notes, and not this — because every morning he did it, I wasn't there.
6a. For the fourth edition. One page, no drawing: which two grades are most easily confused; each family writes what it uses to separate them, whose method it is, and from whom it was learned. A drawing can't show the callus on a man's fingers.
7. Next. Shao Min, at the door on the 10th: their QC, Lu Xiao, twenty-five, wants to live in Shanshan for a season, next to the five suppliers. "I haven't approved it. A young woman, alone out there. What do you think?" Don't ask me first. Let her ask the five families whether they'll have her. If they say yes, then approve it.

"What must be written clearly is not what each grade is like, but how you tell two neighbouring grades apart."
The third-century physician in this chapter compiled one of the earliest systematic works on the pulse. He described twenty-four pulse types, and then, unusually, he admitted the limit of description. The principles, he wrote, are subtle; the forms shade into one another; they are "easy to understand in the mind, hard to make out under the fingers." He ended with a list of eight pairs of pulses that resemble each other: floating and hollow, deep and hidden, moderate and slow.
That list is the most practical page in the book. Nobody confuses opposites. Errors cluster at the boundaries between neighbours, and those are the errors with consequences: mistake one neighbour for the other and the treatment goes wrong.
Any organisation that relies on expert judgement, graders, underwriters, auditors, examiners, sees the same pattern when it finally measures agreement. The headline figure looks alarming, but the disagreements are rarely wild. They sit almost entirely on adjacent categories. The fix is not a better description of each category. It is an explicit statement, for each confusable pair, of the criterion used to separate them, and a record of whose criterion it is.
Two further lessons from the room. Raters who learned from the same teacher agree with each other far more than with anyone else, so a team of five may really be three lineages. And the instrument must be checked before each use: the physician took his own pulse before anyone else's.
Before reading another's pulse, check your own fingers.
