English Mirror: (In the Yuanyou years Su Song was commissioned to settle the armillary instruments, and with the clerk Han Gonglian and others built the water-driven armillary clock tower: water struck a wheel, a balance-and-escapement released it step by step, and armillary sphere, celestial globe and time-announcer were housed together in one tower.) — (He recommended Han Gonglian, a clerk versed in the Nine Chapters who used right-triangle methods to calculate the heavens; they first built a wooden model, tested that it worked, and only then cast it in bronze.) — (When the tower was finished, Su Song wrote the New Treatise on the Armillary Clock, drawing the whole tower and each of its parts, some scores of drawings, with their dimensions.) — (Later the capital fell; the tower was dismantled and carried north; the parts were all there, but once reassembled it never ran again. More than nine hundred years later, later men rebuilt it from the Treatise's drawings, and its wheel turned once more.)

Twenty-eighth of December, 2035, Chengdu, night. Marco closed the year. Three thousand four hundred and ten bags; last year three thousand two hundred and ninety; a hundred and twenty more. Net: plus eighteen thousand nine hundred. Seven years: −70,525; −58,092; −31,400; −8,400; +4,200; +11,600; +18,900. The third positive number. Last year he wrote that he felt it now. This year he wrote no feeling. Beside the figure, small: this year I went fourteen days. Twenty the year before, and the year before that. In May the Changs said don't come next year; in September he stood by a wall a whole day and never touched the scale; in December the one who chose the string wasn't him, the one who pinched it wasn't him, the one who wrote the character wasn't him. Six fewer days; seven thousand three hundred more.

He spread six years across the floor again, door to window. Two hundred and fifty-nine cards — fourteen more than last year, and he knew where each came from: the Hami letter; the second field on the Turpan nine and the woman kneading dough; the seven lines in Urumqi; the Changs' five lines, the fifth blank; the Kuqa box, its sixth layer now a notebook; the Aksu chair and the two lines under entry thirteen; Yiming's nine years — six sky, three family; zero, three, ten days; a string on a Turpan door frame and one character. The Two Ends, third edition, copy one, the most amended this year: entry nine moved into the text with two names, Nurlan and Barat; entry three still hearsay but its provenance no longer empty; one red entry at the buyer's end. The list, a hundred and eight lines. The card that says wait. The photo of the card that says change. And one new thing on top: an email, printed, 26 December. A dried-fruit company in Shanghai holding a photocopy of the third edition — copied from copy seven, the one sent to Urumqi, lent on to who knows whom. Three points: two thousand suppliers, tens of thousands of tonnes, grading resting on a few old masters' hands, the masters retiring and the young not taking over; we want to move the whole system — ruler bags, blind pinching, provenance, sealing dates; please come to Shanghai and run it. A figure for one year: more than he earned in his last year in New York. Last line: we hope to make what you built in Xinjiang into a standard for the whole trade.

Su Song came near midnight on the 30th. Eighty or so, back still straight, an old dark official's robe worn shiny at the collar; a thick book bristling with paper slips in one arm; in the other hand a wooden wheel a little bigger than a palm, ringed with small buckets, and beside it a small lever whose tip caught one of the wheel's teeth. He looked a long time at the floor: where are you moving all this to?

He sat by the door and flicked the wheel: it turned one notch; the lever lifted, dropped, caught the next tooth; it stopped. The balance. Water runs down and fills the buckets one by one; a full bucket sinks and the wheel wants to turn. The balance holds it and lets it go one notch; then catches it again. The water runs continuously; the wheel goes notch by notch. Notch by notch is what makes it tell the hours. A clock? A tower three storeys high: the top to watch the sky, the middle to turn with the sky, the bottom to tell the hours — bell, drum, wooden figures. All driven by this one wheel. You built it alone? I couldn't. There was a clerk, Han Gonglian — a very small official who could calculate. I recommended him. He calculated; I managed. We didn't cast bronze first. We made a wooden model and made it turn. When the wood turned true, we cast the bronze. And: when the bronze was done I did one more thing. I drew it. The whole tower on one sheet; every part on its own sheet, dimensions written. People asked why draw it when it's built. I said: things break.

Later the city fell. The tower was taken apart and loaded, piece by piece, and carried north. The men who dismantled it were careful; not a part was missing. It arrived; they assembled it. It never turned again. Why, if the parts were all there? The parts were all there. The people who could adjust it didn't go with it. A little more water or less; how full a bucket before it sinks; whether the balance catches loose or tight; which way to turn when the wheel runs fast or slow. None of that goes into a drawing. It's in those men's hands. And, and I picked up the pen: the thing can be moved; the people who can tune it can't.

I handed him the email. He read it a long time and laid it on his knee under the wheel. They want that tower. Yes. What do you have? Cards, a book, a design for a box, a list. Those are parts and drawings. Where are the people who tune it? I named them: Alim in Turpan, who has pinched the cupboard half four times and the frame half four times and knows what a string becomes in four years; Eli in Kuqa, whose nose is better than Luo's and who remembered the sealing lag; Yiming, fifty-one slots and a wall; Changbin, five lines, the second his own; Luo in Aksu, a chair, a book, standing behind; Guli in Urumqi, eight notebooks, seven lines, a woman behind a counter; Nurlan in Hami, and his father Barat; and Erkin, and Rehmanjan, and the woman kneading dough in the Turpan kitchen. Silence. Can you move them to Shanghai? No. Then what you move is a tower that won't turn when assembled. And: one more thing you should know. Nine hundred-odd years after that tower was carried off, men rebuilt one from the drawings in my book. None of them had seen mine. They made a wooden model first and adjusted it bit by bit for years. It turned. Five times into the book: the drawings couldn't save the tower that was moved; they saved the one that came later. And: so draw them, as finely as you can. But the drawings are for people in their own places starting from a wooden model — not for people moving things. — M.

Memo to file. Chengdu, 28–31 December 2035. Year-end, Volume Four. An offer to move the machine, declined; the drawings, given away; the cards, sent home.

1. Numbers. 3,410 bags (+120); net +18,900; seven-year line −70,525 / −58,092 / −31,400 / −8,400 / +4,200 / +11,600 / +18,900. Days on site: 14 (from 20). Fewer days, more money — because the places ran without me.

2. The offer. A Shanghai buyer with ~2,000 suppliers, holding a photocopy of the third edition (from copy seven), proposed to transplant the entire system — ruler bags, blind pinch, provenance, sealing protocol — and to hire me to run it. Annual figure larger than my last year's pay in New York. Stated aim: a trade-wide standard.

3. Why not, on the precedent. An astronomical clock tower, dismantled with care and moved intact, never ran again: the parts travelled; the people who could adjust it did not. Nine centuries later it was rebuilt, and ran, from its builder's drawings, by people who had never seen it, starting from a wooden model and adjusting for years. The thing can be moved; the people who tune it can't. Drawings cannot save the machine that is moved; they save the one built later.

4. The reply (fourth draft; the first three contained arguments): — Nothing sold, nothing moved. The ruler bags come from one Turpan house's 2031 string; they measure those families' goods and those families' weather. Moved, they are a ruler measuring the wrong place. — The drawings, free. A fourth edition next year containing no goods at all — methods only, each with a drawing: how to make a ruler; how to pinch blind; how to ask provenance; how to write a range; why samples are sealed the same day; why every note must state which layer it governs. No numbering, no limit on copies, to anyone who asks. — Don't use our ruler. Pick five of your own suppliers, make your own ruler from their goods, build the wooden model first. Find your own people who can pinch; put the young behind them; when they have stood long enough, let them sit.

5. The reversal I note. April 2034: thirty copies; I must know where each one is; I don't want it to flow. It flowed to Hami and came back with an entry added. It flowed to Shanghai and came back as an offer to carry everything off. One flowed back as repair; one as removal. Fourth edition: let it flow. What flows is the drawings. The people who tune it stay where they are.

6. The cards, home. 259 cards sorted into nine piles by origin — Turpan; Yiming; Eli's family; the Changs; Aksu; Urumqi; Hami; and two for those no longer living (Tursun → to Eli; Du, Qin, Zhou → to Luo, "to sit beside your book"). Copies kept; originals mailed back, each envelope addressed to the place the cards came from. On top of each pile: these are what your family said and did, recorded by me, 2029–2035; the originals are returned to you; change them yourselves if you need to, and write who changed them and when.

7. Line 109. Under Nurlan, no name: "Those who did it, whom the recorder didn't ask." The title of the last page of The Two Ends, written into the list below every name — for those whose names I don't know. (Many years ago at Xue Tao's well, a nameless man set a brick back in its place and Du Fu planted a bamboo twig for him.)

8. New Year's Eve, seven messages, none a question. Alim: the frame, new string left, right nail empty — Dad wheeled himself to the door this afternoon and looked a while. Eli: last load of the year; Grandpa Luo didn't come to stand today; he'll stand two days in spring, then no more. Changbin: the five lines, line five still blank — Dad says leave it; nobody fills it. Guli: December coded by the seven lines; "too sweet" down four on two years ago; Alim will log his own buyers by the seven lines next year. Yiming's son: the bag sealed five days late — Dad will seal it himself. Nurlan: rule eleven next year; I won't ask you; I'll tell my father first.

8a. Two more. Luo, 11:40: "Last day of the year I didn't go and stand. Stayed home and copied my whole book out for Eli. Entry thirteen twice." And Shanghai, the same evening, briefly: "Understood. When that edition of methods is printed, send us fifty. We'll pick five suppliers first." The third edition was thirty numbered copies. The fourth isn't typeset and fifty are already wanted. 8b. On names. Su Song put the clerk who did the calculating into his memorial by name: a small official's name matters more, not less; otherwise later men know who built it and not who calculated it. Barat, in October: I said half; write the name in full. Line 107 — mine — stays on the list. The one who draws is on it too, only near the bottom, behind those who tune.

9. The answer to the question I came with. On what grounds do you call a batch acceptable? A ruler; a few pairs of hands that can pinch; and those hands still in their own places. The ruler can be mailed. The hands that pinch against it cannot.

10. 2036. One date circled: 10 March, Turpan — weigh. Everywhere else, only when called. Not to buy, not to ask; to keep a sentence from four years ago: every year you are still here, we will weigh it.

"The thing can be moved; the people who can tune it can't."
In the late eleventh century a senior official and a gifted junior clerk built a water-driven astronomical clock tower several storeys high. A waterwheel, checked by an escapement that let it advance one notch at a time, drove an armillary sphere, a rotating celestial globe and a time-announcing mechanism. They proved the design in wood before casting it in bronze, and when it was finished the official produced something just as remarkable: an illustrated treatise drawing the entire machine and every part, with dimensions.
A generation later the capital fell. The tower was dismantled carefully and carried away intact. Reassembled, it never ran properly again. Every part had travelled. The people who knew how to regulate it, how much water, how tight the escapement, what to adjust when it ran fast, had not.
Nine centuries later, engineers who had never seen the original rebuilt it from the drawings, starting with models and adjusting for years, and it ran.
Firms that acquire another firm's "system" rediscover this constantly. What can be bought and shipped are artefacts: manuals, templates, tools, reference samples. What makes them work is calibration held in particular people in particular places. Move the artefacts without the people and you own a machine that will not turn.
The other half of the lesson is more hopeful. Good drawings do not save the machine that was carried off; they make it possible for someone else, in their own place, to build one that runs. So the right thing to do with hard-won method is to publish it widely, and to leave the people who tune it where they are.
The drawings couldn't save the tower that was moved; they saved the one that came later.
