English Mirror: From ancient times writing was mostly done on bamboo slips bound together; what was written on silk was called paper. But silk was costly and slips were heavy, and neither was convenient for people. Cai Lun then conceived the idea of using tree bark, hemp ends, worn-out cloth and fishing nets to make paper. — In the first year of Yuanxing he presented it to the throne; the emperor praised his skill, and from then on there was no one who did not use it; and so all under heaven called it Marquis Cai's paper. — Whenever he had a day of rest, he would shut his gate, refuse visitors, and go out into the fields in the sun.

Twentieth of December, 2035, ten in the morning, Turpan. House three is empty — the goods came down at the end of September and were sold. A drying house in winter: six hundred-odd holes, wind in one side and out the other; you can hear it standing inside. On the door frame, two things. On the left, the half-string from 2031. Four and a half years hanging, very dark, nearly black, each grape shrunk small, the skin creased line on line like the back of an old man's hand. On the right, a whole string from 2035, green-gold, plump, hanging a good length below the other. Alim chose the right-hand one in September. He didn't replace the old one. He drove a new nail on the right of the frame and hung it beside.

I thought of the six characters from four years ago: house three's string — don't change it this year. Left in July 2031, before he fell at this door. I spent a summer on three readings — keep last year's; hang nothing new; use house two's. The next March, crouching in this yard, I asked: is it because if it's changed you won't recognise it? A horizontal stroke on the third line: yes. That night I wrote: that's why he said don't change it. Change the string and the twenty-year-old has to learn it again. He's keeping the ruler for his son. Alim was twenty. He is twenty-four. The ruler has been kept for him four years. Alim's message of 6 December: I picked it myself; didn't ask my father; not changed since 2031; I want to change it; on the 20th I'd like him to pinch it. I replied one word: coming. I didn't ask why this year or why the 20th. When I arrived Alim told me: the 20th is his father's birthday.

Cai Lun came on the evening of the 19th. About forty, an official's robe with the sleeves rolled to the elbow, both hands grey-white from fingertip to wrist as if steeped in lime-water for years. A cloth bundle on his back with an end of old hemp rope, a corner of torn fishing net and some washed-out rags showing. He looked at the door frame, the old and the new, a long while: the new one hung beside the old; the old one not taken down.

He untied the bundle: the frayed rope; the net with broken meshes; scraps of what had been clothes; a flake of bark; and under all of it a sheet of paper — coarse, yellowish, strands of unbeaten fibre visible. He held it to the light at the door, and the light came through. This was made from those. Old hemp rope, broken net, clothes worn to rags, bark. Things nobody wanted. Why those? Writing used to be on bamboo — heavy; a book needed a cart. On silk — light, but dear. I made things for the palace; I wondered whether there was something both light and cheap. What's cheap is what people throw away. There's hemp in old cloth, and hemp is good stuff; it's only old and torn and nobody wants it. I soaked them to rot, pounded them, lifted the pulp, spread it, dried it. And, and I picked up the pen: new paper doesn't come from nowhere. It's made of old cloth. When old cloth becomes paper, is it gone? Gone, and not gone. It's in the paper. Hold it to the light — those strands are it. And: ask the young man what he used to choose the string on the right.

That night, in the kitchen, making tea, Alim didn't stop his hands. With the half-string on the left. In September, for every string I picked up, I pinched one grape, then went and pinched one of the half-string on the frame. Not to find one as firm — that half has hung four years; nothing's as firm. To see whether this one would grow, in four years, into what that half is. How can you tell? You can't. But every tenth of March I pinch the half in the cupboard — that's 2031 as it first went up; the half on the frame is 2031 four years on. I've pinched both four times. What it's like new, what it's like four years later — my hands have it. I chose the string that, new, was most like the cupboard half. He handed me a bowl: my father's string is the ruler. I used his ruler to choose mine.

Later, at the door of house three: when paper came, bamboo slips didn't stop at once. For many years the two were used together. Some thought paper too light, not dignified, and wrote important things on slips. It took a few hundred years before everyone used paper. A few hundred years. Don't rush to take down the old. Hang the new beside it and let people look. When they've looked enough, one day the hand reaches for the new by itself. And: that young man didn't replace it; he drove a new nail. He's waiting for someone to say. And: people called it Marquis Cai's paper; others made paper before me — what I did was make it good to use and cheap enough for everyone. Five times into the book: the name is written on the new paper; the old cloth has no name. But without the old cloth there is no paper. — M.

Memo to file. Turpan, 19–21 December 2035. "House three's string — don't change it this year" (July 2031). Today, one more character: change.

1. The setup. Alim chose house three's 2035 reference himself in September, without asking his father, and did not replace the 2031 half-string; he hung the new string on a new nail beside it. He asked for the pinch on 20 December — his father's birthday.

2. How the new standard was chosen — from the old one. For each candidate string, one grape pinched against the door-frame half (2031, four and a half years on the frame). He was not matching firmness; he was judging whether the candidate would age into what the half-string is. Calibration: four annual openings (each 10 March) of the cupboard half — 2031 as first hung — against the frame half — 2031 after years of hanging. "I chose the string that, new, was most like the cupboard half. My father's string is the ruler. I used his ruler to choose mine."

3. The pinch. Three items: the frame half; the sealed cupboard bag (not opened — opened only on 10 March); the 2035 string. Left hand: frame half, one pinch, released. 2035 string: one pinch — held — pinched again, and again — three pinches before releasing. Ten seconds' stillness. Two sounds, one high, one low. Alim: "That's 'enough' — the Uyghur 'enough.' He used to say it every day at knocking-off, standing at the house door. Four years he hasn't made that sound."

4. The two acts. He pushed the sealed 2031 bag across the table into Alim's hands; Alim didn't take it; he pushed again until it touched Alim's hand. Then the pen: dot; a crooked horizontal, retraced; a sweep; many pauses; the pen-tip pierced the card once; a rest; the final stroke. One character, crooked, half the card: 换 — change. He closed his eyes. When he opened them, he touched the back of Alim's hand once.

5. What Alim did with it. New string onto the left nail — the old one's place. Right nail left in, empty. The old half-string not thrown away: sewn into a new bag, into the cupboard beside the 2031 reserve, labelled 2031, house three; on the door frame four and a half years; taken down 20 December 2035. The new string's tag: 2035, house three. Chosen by Alim. And beneath, smaller: chosen with my father's string. The card reading 换 on the cupboard door, beside the four-year-old card: *this bag we will not touch; every year you are still here, we will weigh it.

6. The fourth reading. In 2031 I found three. Don't change it now; change it when the one who will choose has come. Those four years he wasn't waiting for the string to improve. He was waiting for his son.

6a. Two characters in four years. That night I set side by side on my phone the card on my desk in Chengdu — 等, wait, the first character he wrote with his left hand, October 2031, three months after he fell — and today's 换, change. Equally crooked, equally large, each filling half a card. In the book: in four years he has written two characters. The first was wait; the second, change. The four years between were the wait. 6b. Three handovers in one year. May: Chang Yushan yielded seven times and put a stool in the storeroom. September: Luo said you sit and stepped behind. December: a man who cannot speak wrote one character with his left hand. All three yielded while still here. 6c. Why Alim didn't ask in September. "If I'd asked then and he drew a horizontal stroke, I'd have been choosing for him. I wanted it to hang until I could look at it straight myself." Were you afraid he'd say no? "Yes. But if he said no, I'd know what was wrong. If he'd said nothing at all — that would have frightened me." And his calibration insight, day three of four: this year's weather is hotter than 2031's, so a new string should start firmer — choose not the identical one, but the one whose relation to this year's weather is most like the cupboard half's relation to that year's. A ruler isn't for matching; it's for measuring the difference.

7. At supper. Alim put the sealed bag by his father's hand: "Dad, I'm keeping this. Next tenth of March, we open it once, we weigh it. Every year you are still here, we weigh it." My sentence of four years ago; Alim's today.

8. Provenance, per Alim, at the lane's end: house three's 2035 string: Alim; and add, chosen with my father's string.

"The name is written on the new paper; the old cloth has no name. But without the old cloth there is no paper."
The official traditionally credited with inventing paper did not, strictly, invent it; earlier paper has been found. What the historians recorded is that he made it practical and cheap by using materials no one wanted: tree bark, hemp waste, worn-out rags and old fishing nets, soaked, pounded, formed and dried. The court adopted it, and the country called it by his name.
Two details in the story tend to be passed over. The first is the material. New paper was made out of old cloth. The old thing was not discarded in favour of the new; it was pulped into it, and if you hold the sheet up to the light you can see its fibres.
The second is the timing. Paper did not replace bamboo slips overnight. The two coexisted for centuries, and for important documents people kept using the heavier, older medium because it felt more serious. Adoption happened when enough hands, having both to hand, reached for the new one by habit.
Replacing a standard, a benchmark, a reference sample, a founder's rule, goes best the same way. The new standard is calibrated against the old one, not chosen in defiance of it. The old one is hung beside the new rather than taken down. And the decision to switch belongs to someone who can say, with authority, that it is enough.
Sometimes that person can say only one word.
New paper doesn't come from nowhere. It's made of old cloth.
