English Mirror: There is a quantity whose number is unknown. Counted by threes, two remain; counted by fives, three remain; counted by sevens, two remain. What is the quantity? Answer: twenty-three. — Number and the Way are not two separate roots. — The astronomical and the divinatory arts are called inner reckoning, meaning they are held secret; what the Nine Chapters contains — the nine numbers of the ancient offices, and the treatment of the round and the square — is called outer reckoning*, as against the inner. Their uses run into one another and must not be split in two. — Vast and spreading is the world; things attach themselves by kind, and number is born of principle. — So I gave my mind to it, and cast the whole in the form of question and answer, to imitate actual use. — What is called reaching the clear intelligences and following the order of life takes its beginning here.

Twentieth of September, morning. Two columns: what I know, and what I can prove. The left column filled with a dozen entries — house three's string can't be replaced; house three runs 0.8 to 1.3 degrees cooler than one and two; the cause is the tree; house two lost one point eight taels in eleven days; Turpan three equals Chang four; Chang's ruler may have drifted. Into the right column I could put two. The temperature gap, because I keyed in one thousand one hundred and seventy-six figures. The one point eight, because it was weighed. Everything else is one man saying so. In the book: most of what I have accumulated in three years is not evidence. And: it is testimony.

I circled the word and then explained it to myself: testimony does not mean false. It means only one person said it and nobody else can check. Then I counted. Two hundred-odd findings: a hundred-odd from Chang's side, fifty-odd from Abdul Rahman's, twenty-odd from Luo, a dozen from Rehmanjan and the Kucha three. How many of them were reported by two unconnected sources? An afternoon of going through them: seven. I copied those seven onto a single sheet and headed it stands up.

Qin Jiushao came on the twenty-first — forties, maybe fifty; dark robe of decent cloth, not new; not the look of a scholar, the look of a man who has administered things. He carried a cloth bag, upended it on the table, and out came a handful of small bamboo rods, all the same length, polished from use. He laid them out in rows, some upright, some flat. Counting rods. I have reckoned with these all my life.

He set a problem first. There is a quantity and nobody knows how many. Counted by threes, two remain. By fives, three remain. By sevens, two remain. How many? I climbed up by threes — 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23 — and 23 leaves 3 by five and 2 by seven. Twenty-three. Correct. How did you get it? One at a time. You can do that with small numbers. The version in my book runs to a hundred-odd thousand. You cannot try your way to it.

He named his method — the great expansion, seeking unity — and declined to teach it. I won't give you the procedure; you wouldn't use it. I'll give you the reason. And then the question that was the point of the visit: have you thought about what is remarkable in that problem? No. What is remarkable is that nobody ever counted the heap. The man counting by threes knows only that two remain; the man by fives, that three remain; the man by sevens, that two. None of the three knows the total. And, and I picked up the pen: yet the three not-knowings, put together, are a knowing.

Why do they add? Because three, five and seven have nothing to do with one another. And the counterexample: counted by threes, two remain; counted by sixes, two remain — the second statement is wasted breath. Why? Six has three inside it. Counting by sixes is counting by threes over again. You think you have learned a second thing. And, five times into the book: in fact you have learned the same thing twice.

So I fetched the sheet of seven and told him I had four men counting one heap: Chang counts "does it come back"; the old man in Turpan counts "the bite"; Luo counts "the two ends"; the boy counts "how many taels it loses."Four remainders. Yes. — Check whether one of your four is a six. I went through them. Come-back: Chang found it himself, thirty-one years. Bite: the old man bit it out himself, forty years. Two ends: Luo worked it out in the purchasing stations over decades. Taels lost — Taels lost is mine. I bought those six thermometers in the winter of 2029. I told Alim to record the daily weight. That figure is produced by my method. Then you have three, not four.*

Then the six characters. Your two columns are wrongly divided. Where? You put "what I know" on the left and "what I can prove" on the right, as though they were two things. The first page of my book says six characters: number and the Way are not two separate roots. Meaning? The figure you compute and the principle in the matter itself are not two roots. They are one. And: your "can't be replaced" is not testimony. It is a remainder. And: a remainder standing alone looks like a sentence. Set beside two others, it is a number.

Last question: why is your whole book in problems? Eighty-one of them. Each is a question, an answer, and a method. Why not extract the methods into a book of their own? — Extracted, they die. A method away from its problem — nobody knows what it governs, and what nobody knows the scope of gets applied where it does not belong. And: in the preface I wrote: cast in question and answer, to imitate actual use. And: imitate use means laid out in the shape of real matters — so many acres of field, so many piculs of tax, so many men, so many granaries. Every problem has a particular place and particular figures. And, four times into the book: anybody can pick up a rule. And: a problem cannot be carried off by someone who can't solve it. Gathering the rods back into the bag one by one, and at the door: your Two Ends is written as rules. And: which is why somebody used it to lean on a man. — M.

Memo to file. Chengdu, 20–26 September 2031. Four remainders, of which one does not count.

1. The audit that started it. Of two hundred-odd findings gathered over three years, exactly seven had ever been reported independently by two unconnected people. Everything else is single-source. Single-source is not false — it is unfalsifiable, which in a trading book is worse than wrong, because wrong eventually costs you money and unfalsifiable never does until it costs you everything.

2. The remainder problem, and why it is the right model for what I am doing. Three counters, three moduli, and not one of the three ever learns the size of the heap. Yet the three partial ignorances jointly determine it exactly. This is the argument for cross-calibration that I did not have. I have been treating each household's judgement as a weak version of the true standard. It is not. It is an exact statement about a remainder, and remainders combine.*

3. The condition, which is the whole thing and which I nearly missed. They combine only if the moduli share no factor. Counted by threes, two remain; counted by sixes, two remain — the second adds nothing, because six has three inside it, and you have learned the same thing twice while believing you learned two.

4. Applying the test to my own four, and failing it. Chang's come-back: independent, thirty-one years, self-derived. Abdul Rahman's bite: independent, forty years. Luo's two ends: independent, decades in purchasing stations. Alim's taels lost: mine. I bought the thermometers in winter 2029 and specified the daily weighing. I have three independent measurements, not four. The fourth is my own modulus wearing someone else's name, and for two years I have been counting it as corroboration of myself. Filed as the standing rule: anything I introduced does not count as a second source. Ever.

5. The correction to how I had framed the whole notebook. I had knowledge and proof in separate columns, as two kinds of thing. Number and the Way are not two separate roots. The computed figure and the principle in the matter are one root. "Don't replace it" is not testimony — it is a remainder. Alone it looks like a sentence; beside two others it is a number.

6. Why eighty-one problems and no separate book of methods, and this is the answer to the thing that has bothered me since last year. A method away from its problem dies, because nobody knows its scope, and what nobody knows the scope of gets applied where it does not belong. The preface: cast in question and answer, to imitate actual use — every problem carries a particular place and particular figures, so many acres, so many piculs, so many men. And the sentence that names my mistake exactly: anybody can pick up a rule; a problem cannot be carried off by someone who can't solve it. And the diagnosis: Two Ends is written as rules, which is why somebody used it to lean on a grower.

7. What I did about it, 22 September, and it is clumsy. Rewriting the twelve clauses as questions. — Clause 1 was look at the two ends, not the middle. Now: you have twenty minutes with a truckload. Which handful do you take first? Three blank lines, then what Luo actually said in Kucha that year. — Clause 7 was the dust on the mouth of the sack is a ballast mark. Now: same batch, a film of dust on the mouth and none at the bottom — has this sack been moved these two days or not? — Clause 11 I could not touch. It was never technical; Luo put it in himself, and it was already a question. Left verbatim.

8. Luo's verdict, 24 September, in two halves. First half: "This version won't sell. People who buy a book want answers. Give them a question and they'll say you're playing with them." I said the answers are underneath. "I know they're underneath. But what he sees first is the question." Second half, after a pause. He raised last year himself — the buyer who took clauses out of the notebook to lean on a grower, saying the book says this is what passes. "He could lean on him because that page said 'is.' Now it's a question — who does he lean on? He has to answer it himself." And, written down the same day: a man who can't answer it can't say it with any force.

9. Chang's take-down, 26 September. Six houses, 3,200 catties; house five with the refrigeration up 140 catties on last year. And the line that matters: his father pinched their own, then went back and pinched the Turpan number three. Verdict: this year ours is about the same as that Turpan three. And from Chang Bin: last year he'd have said ours was better.

10. The count that changed my mind about the last three years. That finding went onto the sheet: seven becomes eight. And of the eight, five are from these two months. The only thing I did in these two months was make two households look at each other. Three years produced three; two months produced five. Not because I got cleverer — because until now every finding had exactly one witness.

11. And the thing at the back of Luo's notebook that I had never asked about. Clause twelve is one short line: there is no thirteenth clause in this trade. I asked how old he was when he wrote it. Fifty-nine. And: that year I thought I wouldn't make it to sixty-five. And, and then he stopped writing: I'm sixty-one now, and I think I wrote that line too early.

"Number and the Way are not two separate roots."
Six characters at the front of a book of eighty-one worked problems on taxes, granaries, dyke repairs, troop levies and the areas of odd-shaped fields. They are usually quoted as philosophy. In context they are closer to a working claim: that the figure you compute and the principle in the matter are the same object, so a man who reckons well is not doing something lesser than a man who understands.
The book's most famous piece of machinery makes the claim concrete. Take the old puzzle: a heap of unknown size; counted by threes, two remain; by fives, three remain; by sevens, two remain. The answer is twenty-three, and with small numbers you can climb to it by trying. His procedure recovers it when the number runs to six figures and trying is hopeless.
What is remarkable is not the arithmetic. It is that nobody in the problem ever counts the heap. Each of the three counters knows one remainder and nothing else. None of them knows the total. Yet the three not-knowings, put together, are a knowing.
And there is a condition, which is the part worth carrying away. It works because three, five and seven have nothing to do with one another. Change the second modulus to six and the second statement becomes worthless: six has three inside it. Counting by sixes is counting by threes over again — you have learned the same thing twice while believing you learned two.
The other half of his practice was formal and deliberate: he refused to write a book of methods. Everything is cast in question and answer, to imitate actual use — every rule embedded in a particular case with particular figures. His reason was not pedagogical modesty.
A method away from its problem dies, because nobody knows its scope; and what nobody knows the scope of gets applied where it does not belong.
Anybody can pick up a rule. A problem cannot be carried off by someone who cannot solve it.
