*English Mirror: If you wish to surpass, you must first make the two meet; and before they can meet, you must first translate. — This book's benefit is that it can rid the theorist of his airy vapours and discipline his mind; it gives the practical man a fixed method and draws out his ingenuity — therefore there is not one person in the world who ought not to study it. — He who can master this book can master anything; he who is glad to study this book can study anything. — Four things become unnecessary: no need to doubt, no need to guess, no need to test, no need to revise. — Turning it over and over, seeking to meet the sense of the original, correcting it again and again in the language of the middle land — the draft was changed three times. — Five sorts of men cannot study it: the hasty, the careless, the self-satisfied, the envious, and the proud. — What has no use is the use on which all uses rest.

Fifth of September, evening. I tried a straight translation first. Alim wrote the slip in his own family's way, three lines in Uyghur, photographed it, sent it; I fed the photo to the app. House three. Came down 29 August. Hung fifteen days. Clean. The trouble was line four. Alim had written one word, and the app rendered it as two characters: the good one. I sent a voice note asking what it meant. His answer ran over forty seconds. He has heard the word from his father since he was small. It does not mean "good." It says: this string ought to be like this. He does not know which Chinese character corresponds. And at the end, after a pause: "When my father says that word, his hand is squeezing."

Sixth of September, Chang Bin by phone. What does your father say when he pinches a raisin? "Whether it comes back." Anything else? "There's also 'loose.' Loose is bad." And what is "coming back"? "You press it and it pushes back at you." Pushes. "Yes. Pushes." So I put four words on one sheet: pushes back (Chang), bite (Abdul Rahman), how many taels it loses (Alim's tables), two ends (Luo's notebook). Four words for parts of one thing. Not one of them learned from any of the others. In the book: these are not four ways of saying it. These are four men who have never met, each of whom gave the same thing a name.

Xu Guangqi came on the seventh — dark plain robe, old, cuffs worn white; sixty or so, not tall. He carried no book, only a sheaf of paper, more crossed out than left standing. He set it down and said: this is the third draft.

He opened by asking which of my four words I meant to make the standard. "Comes back" is the easiest to follow."Easiest for you to follow.""Does the old man in Turpan follow it?" No. — "Then you did not choose the truest one. You chose the nearest one." And, and I picked up the pen: that fault is called taking your own household's speech for the speech of the world.

His own case. He once translated a book whose first sentence explains what a point is, and he was stuck on that sentence for three days. Why? Chinese had no such word. — It has the character. — "It has the character; it does not have the meaning. In Chinese a dot is a spot of ink, a small patch. The point in that book has no size, and a thing with no size had, in those days, no name in Chinese." What he did after three days: he manufactured a usage. A point is that which has no parts. From that day the Chinese word had one more meaning. And also line, and surface, and parallel, and right angle, acute angle, obtuse angle, trianglebefore that year not one of them existed on paper. *I said schoolchildren use those words now. "Yes. Which is why they do not know that each one was thought up by a person."

Then the twelve characters. If you wish to surpass, you must first make the two meet; and before they can meet, you must first translate. How do the three differ? Translating is carrying the other side's words over. Meeting is the two sides lining up so that each can check the other. Surpassing is making, on that footing, something better than either. And: they come in that order. And, four times into the book: the man who skips the first two and goes straight for the third ends with nothing.

I said my four words are four books and nobody understands two of them. "Then don't translate yet." How can they meet without it? "When I translated that book I had the objects to hand. If a triangle came up, I drew one. His word I did not know; I drew it, he nodded, and then I knew." And: a drawing needs no translation. Mine cannot be drawn, I said; mine is one movement of the hand. "Then don't use a drawing. Use the thing itself. One batch, split in two. Half here, half there. Now the two men are squeezing the same goods. That is the moment you give it a number." And, five times into the book: the number is not a word. The number is the name of that half-bag.

Last question: numbering sounds useless, a bare figure that says nothing. He laughed. "They said that of my book too when it first came out: a few lines and a few angles, no use for farming or for war." And: I wrote six characters for it. What has no use is the use on which all uses rest. And: the thing that looks useless is the ground the other uses stand on. Gathering up the sheaf, and the top sheet was crossed through until it was barely legible: this one I revised three times. At the door, turning: your numbering will certainly be wrong the first year. Correct it; by about the third round it will do. — M.

马可备忘Marco's Memo0 字

分析师的复盘:数字、结论、他改了哪条规矩

Memo to file. Chengdu, 5–15 September 2031. The slip, the four words, and the first equation.

1. Machine translation carried the facts and lost the only line that mattered. House, date, days hung — all fine. Line four came back as "the good one," which is not what it says. Alim's gloss: not good, but this string ought to be like thisand he has no Chinese character for it, and when his father says it his hand is squeezing.

2. Four vocabularies, independently invented, for overlapping parts of one thing. Chang: comes back / loose, where comes back is glossed as you press it and it pushes back. Abdul Rahman: the bite. Alim's tables: taels lost. Luo's notebook: two ends. None of the four was learned from any of the others. They are not four dialects of one standard; they are four separate acts of naming.

3. Xu's first correction, and it landed. I had already decided to make Chang's comes back the base term because it was the easiest to explain. Easiest for me. The man in Turpan cannot follow it at all. I had picked the nearest word and called it the truest — taking my own household's speech for the speech of the world.

4. The precedent, which is the whole chapter. Translating the first definition of a geometry, he was stuck three days on point, because the character existed and the meaning did not — a Chinese dot is a patch of ink with size, and the point in the original has none. So he coined the usage: a point is that which has no parts. Then line, surface, parallel, right angle, acute, obtuse, triangle. None of those words existed on paper before that year, and now schoolchildren use them without knowing that each one was invented by somebody. Where no word exists, translation is not retrieval. It is manufacture.

5. The sequence, and my standing error against it. Surpass ← meet ← translate, in that order, and the man who skips the first two and goes straight for the third ends with nothing. I have spent three years trying to build something better than what these households have, without ever getting the four vocabularies to line up. I was aiming at step three from a standing start.

6. The method, which sidesteps language entirely. He had objects: he drew the triangle, the other man nodded. A drawing needs no translation. Mine cannot be drawn — it is one movement of a hand — so: the object itself. One batch, split in two, half in each house. Both men are now squeezing identical material. That is when you attach a number, and the number is not a word: it is the name of that half-bag. And the defence of numbering against the charge of emptiness: what has no use is the use on which all uses rest — the useless-looking thing is the ground the rest stands on. Plus the warning: the first year's numbering will be wrong; expect three rounds.

7. What was actually done, 8–15 September, and it is small. Twenty catties out of house two's 2031 batch — chosen because house two is this year's most ordinary house: eleven days, one point eight taels lost, same as always. Neither good nor bad. Split in half; half stays in Turpan, half posted to Chang. From it, Alim and his brother picked five two-tael bags, ranked soft to hard, numbered one to five. Identical sets on both doorframes. Number three is house two's normal.

8. Luo, 13 September, put it in its place immediately. He has seen it before: cotton. There are standard sample boxes, identical nationwide; every buyer has one. What's the difference? — "Theirs was made by the state. Your five bags were ranked by a nineteen-year-old." Does that make it invalid? — "Depends how many people accept it. Right now, two households." And, written down the same day: two households is not a standard. Two households is a start.

9. The result, 15 September, and it is better than agreement would have been. Chang pinched all five in order, said nothing, then went back and pinched number three a second time, and said: "This number three is a four for me." The two rulers are one grade apart. Chang Bin and I both think that is not a bad thing.

*10. And the sentence I did not expect, which Chang Bin relayed afterwards. His father also said: when he was young, a three was a three. And: his hands are not as sharp as they were. And: he does not know whether the goods changed or he did. In thirty-one years, this is the first time that ruler has said, out loud, that it might have drifted. It said so because a second ruler turned up beside it. In the book: the second one is not more accurate. The second one is merely different.

11. And the thing I built that night, which worries me. A three-column table: number, Turpan's reading, Chang's reading. Filling the third column turns the table into a conversion. Turpan 3 = Chang 4. That line is an equation. In three years I have recorded two hundred-odd findings and not one of them was an equation; they were all sentences. This is the first thing I can compute with — and what can be computed can be added, subtracted, extrapolated. *Underneath it I wrote the question I could not answer: once a matter becomes a number, is the matter still inside it?

本回所引古文的英译与解读

"If you wish to surpass, you must first make the two meet; and before they can meet, you must first translate."
Twelve characters, written by a man who spent much of his working life on exactly this problem, and the force of them is in the ordering. Surpassing is last. Making the two systems commensurable is second. Translation is first, and it is the least glamorous of the three, and it is where nearly everyone stops or never starts.
He knew how hard the first step was because he had been stuck inside it. Translating the opening of a geometry, he lost three days on the word point — not because the sentence was subtle, but because the character existed and the meaning did not. A dot in his language was a patch of ink; it had size. The thing he was translating had none.
What he did was not find a word. He made one. A point is that which has no parts. And after it: line, surface, parallel, right angle, acute, obtuse, triangle — none of them on paper before that year.
Which is why the children who use those words today do not know that each one was thought up by a person. That is the ordinary fate of successful translation: it disappears into the language and looks as though it had always been there.
He also knew when to put language down. When a word failed, he reached for the object: he drew the triangle, and the other man nodded, and then he knew. A drawing needs no translation. Neither does a bag of goods split in half so that two men, thirteen hundred kilometres apart, are holding the same thing.
And against the charge that a bare number says nothing:
"What has no use is the use on which all uses rest."
With the working conditions attached, because he was a practical man: the first attempt will be wrong. Revise it. Around the third draft it will do.
