*English Mirror: Thirty harvests went by; I examined more than eight hundred authors; the draft was changed three times. — I hunted through the books and gathered in the hundred schools — the classics and histories, phonology and husbandry, medicine and divination, astronomy and physiognomy, the song collections — and wherever I got anything, I set down a few words. — In the old text, jade and stone and water and earth were jumbled together, and the insects and the scaled and the shelled were not separated; an insect might sit in the section on trees, a tree in the section on herbs. Now each is set out as its own division: water and fire first, since they precede all things, then earth, the mother of all things; then metals and stones, which follow from earth; then herbs, grains, vegetables, fruits and trees, going from the small to the great; then clothing and utensils, which follow from herb and tree; then insects, scaled creatures, shelled creatures, birds and beasts, and last of all man, going from the low to the high. — Split them into families, mark off their kinds; raise the head-rope, and the meshes fall into order. — I have not shrunk from being exhaustive. — Clear in the face, spare in the body, and full of relish in his talk.

Eighth of October, afternoon. Two and a half days copying two hundred and odd findings onto cards, one to a card, A6. Two hundred and seventeen of them, spread on the floor. I laid them out the old way without thinking: Chang's pile, Turpan's pile, Luo's pile, Rehmanjan and the Kucha three. Four piles I have been looking at for three years; I can recite parts of each from memory. Then the question: these four piles are sorted by who said it. Why by who said it? Half an hour on the floor, and the answer was not comfortable. Because when I started I went from household to household, and whichever house I was in, that is where the note went. In the book: this filing scheme was never a decision. It was the order in which I travelled.
So I pushed the four piles apart. Sitting in the middle of two hundred and seventeen loose cards, holding once it takes damp it goes all the way down (Chang) and goods that have been wet won't press back up to weight (Luo) — two piles apart under the old scheme. I put them together and found a third: the year house three was sealed early, you opened the door and got a breath of damp (Alim). Three cards. Three men, three places, thirty years, forty years, two years. Under my filing they had never met. And: if I sort by who said it, I will never see who is saying the same thing.
Li Shizhen came on the ninth — about seventy, very thin, the clean kind of thin, a bamboo creel on his back with bundles of stems and roots in it and one small stone, and in his hand a book worn to pieces and resewn along the edge with thread. He set the creel down gently, looked at the floor, and said: your layout is wrong.
He picked up three cards at random. These three are all about water. Yes. Why aren't they next to each other? Because different men said them. He stood up. I've seen this fault. The old texts I worked from were arranged the same way. How? By three grades: the upper nourish life, the middle nourish the nature, the lower treat illness. Arranged that way for a thousand years. What's wrong with it? — It isn't arranging the things. It's arranging what the things are good for. And, and I picked up the pen: what a thing is good for changes. What it is does not.
His own scheme, laid out with the book on the table. Sixteen divisions. Water first and fire, because water and fire come before all things; then earth, the mother of all things; then metals and stones, which come out of earth; then herbs, grains, vegetables, fruits, trees — from the small to the great; then insects, scaled, shelled, birds, beasts. And the last division is man. Man too? Yes. Put at the end.
I asked whether an insect really ended up under trees in the old books. Yes. A copyist finds a grub in wood and files it under wood; finds it in grass and files it under grass. One creature scattered across three or four places. And the harm? You have to search four places for it. And: that isn't the worst. And: the worst is that you stop at the first place you find it. And, five times into the book: you think you have finished searching.
Eight characters for what he did: split them into families, mark off their kinds; raise the head-rope, and the meshes fall open. The head-rope is the main cord of a net — pull it and the meshes open by themselves. Beneath a division come classes, and only beneath a class the individual items. Sixteen divisions, sixty classes. I said it sounded like nothing but re-stacking. He looked at me. Try re-stacking it.
So I did, on the floor, and got stuck at about the fortieth card: on loading day, who loads matters more than what's loaded — people, or transport? He said: you'll hit a lot of those. In my book, a drug belonging to two divisions I copied twice, entered in both, each noting where the other is. And: it costs a bit more paper. And: I have not shrunk from being exhaustive. And: the man who begrudges the paper ends by paying in the time it takes to find things.
Then the question I was embarrassed to ask: how long, altogether? Thirty years. And: more than eight hundred authors read. And: the draft pulled down and rewritten three times. Three figures: thirty, eight hundred, three. How old were you at the third rewrite? A little over sixty. Sixty, and you pulled down twenty-odd years of work. — What I pulled down was not the content. Not one entry was lost. What I pulled down was the arrangement. And, four times into the book: the material took twenty-odd years to gather; the arrangement I only saw clearly in the last few. And: while you can still gather, you can't see the arrangement; by the time you can, you can't gather any more. Shouldering the creel, steadying his back with one hand, at the door: the year it was cut for printing, I was not here. And: my son took it up. — M.
Memo to file. Chengdu, 8–18 October 2031. Two hundred and seventeen cards, re-sorted once, eleven findings that were there all along.
1. The thing I never noticed about my own filing. Three years of notes filed in four piles by household — and the scheme was not a decision, it was my travel itinerary. Where I happened to be sitting determined where the note went, and after the first year the shape hardened and I stopped seeing it as a shape at all.
2. The demonstration, which took thirty seconds and cost three years. Once it takes damp it goes all the way down (Chang, thirty-one years). Goods that have been wet won't press back up to weight (Luo, decades of purchasing stations). The year house three was sealed early, you opened the door and got a breath of damp (Alim, two years). One phenomenon, three independent observers, and under my filing those three cards had never been in the same room.
3. The precedent, and it is exact. The old pharmacopoeias sorted drugs into three grades — upper nourish life, middle nourish the nature, lower treat illness — for a thousand years. His objection: that is not arranging the things, it is arranging what the things are good for. And: what a thing is good for changes; what it is does not. My four piles were a use-based classification wearing a neutral face: they sorted my findings by which supplier they let me squeeze.
4. The consequence he named, which is the real cost and not the obvious one. With one creature scattered across four sections, the obvious cost is four searches. The actual cost is that you stop at the first hit and believe you are done. That is precisely how I got seven corroborated findings in September: I scanned, I found some, I stopped.
5. The method: split into families, mark off kinds; raise the head-rope and the meshes fall open. Divisions, then classes, then items — sixteen and sixty in his case. And the rule for items that belong in two places: copy it twice, enter it in both, each noting the other. Cost: paper. The man who begrudges the paper pays in the time it takes to find things.
6. What I built, 9–14 October. Six heads: heat, water, time, goods, people, road — heat before water, because the heat comes first and the water is what the heat drives out. Nineteen classes under them: heat (day / night / before sealing / after sealing), water (coming in / leaving / coming back), time (early / on time / late / missed), goods (colour / feel / taste), people (who does it / who watches / who decides), road (loading / moving). Twenty-eight cards were copied into two places. Two hundred and forty-five cards in total.
7. The count, 14 October, two hours of it, and it is the finding of the year. Findings reported by two or more unconnected sources: nineteen. On 20 September I counted seven. On the 26th, eight. The eleven new ones are not new. Every one of them was sitting in the two hundred and seventeen the whole time.* I did not miss them through carelessness. I missed them because I had kept them in separate piles for three years. And: where a thing is placed decides whether you can see it.
8. Luo's marked paper, arrived 16 October, and it caught me out. Nine of eleven answered. Question three: "don't know," in pencil. Question eight: "you made this one up." He was right. Clause eight originally read a sack scuffed white at the corner has come a long way. I turned it into: a batch has three sacks scuffed white at the corner and the rest are clean — where did those three come from? The "three" and the "rest are clean" are mine. Adding them turned an observation into a question with a single answer I had already decided on. In the book: when I set the question I already knew what answer I wanted. And: a question set by someone who knows the answer is a trap, not a question. Question eight deleted the same night. Eleven becomes ten.
9. The other three figures, which I wrote down and have not stopped looking at. Thirty years. Eight hundred authors. Three drafts. And at the third rewrite he was a little over sixty, and what he pulled down was not the content — not one entry lost — but the arrangement. The material took twenty-odd years to gather; the arrangement he only saw clearly in the last few. While you can still gather, you can't see the arrangement; by the time you can, you can't gather. And the plain fact at the end: the year it was printed, he was not there. His son took it up. Against which: Luo is 61. Chang is 64. Abdul Rahman is 69. And I get twenty days a year on the ground.
10. And the message on 18 October, which does not fit anywhere. In rehabilitation they gave him a pen. Twenty minutes, and he produced one character — not one of the six. A new one. Photographed on rehab squared paper, written large, strokes crooked, perfectly legible. Wait. Alim asked. He nodded. Asked whether he means for us to wait. He nodded. Asked what for. He drew the circle. Two hundred and forty-five cards on my floor, six heads, nineteen classes, and I do not know which class this goes in. In the book: six heads can't hold this character. And: because it isn't about the goods.

"Thirty harvests went by; I examined more than eight hundred authors; the draft was changed three times."
Three numbers, written by a physician about a book of some nineteen hundred drugs, eleven thousand prescriptions and a thousand-odd illustrations. The first two are usually what get quoted. The third is the one worth stopping on.
The book he inherited sorted its material into three grades: the upper nourish life, the middle nourish the nature, the lower treat illness. That arrangement had held for a thousand years, and his objection to it is a single clean sentence. It is not arranging the things. It is arranging what the things are good for. And a use can be wrong, or go out of date, or never have been real. What a thing is good for changes. What it is does not.
So he re-sorted everything by what it was: water and fire, then earth, then metals and stones, then herbs and grains and vegetables and fruits and trees — from the small to the great — then insects, scaled, shelled, birds, beasts, and last of all man.
He also named the harm the old scheme did, and it is not the harm you would expect. When one creature is scattered across four sections, the obvious cost is having to search four times. That is not what he says. The worst of it is that you stop at the first place you find it — and you think you have finished searching.
A misfiled fact does not announce itself as missing. It sits there being findable in one place, and its three companions sit elsewhere being findable in theirs, and the pattern that all four together would have made is not hidden anywhere. It simply never occurs.
Eight characters for the remedy: split them into families and mark off their kinds; raise the head-rope, and the meshes fall open.
And the working note underneath, which is a whole disposition: I have not shrunk from being exhaustive — an item belonging to two places gets copied into both, each pointing at the other. It costs paper. The man who begrudges the paper ends by paying in the time it takes to find things.
The third draft came when he was a little past sixty, and what he demolished was not the content — not one entry was lost — but the order it stood in.
The material took twenty-odd years to gather; the arrangement he only saw clearly in the last few. While you can still gather, you cannot see the arrangement; by the time you can, you cannot gather any more.
The book was cut for printing three years after he died.
