English Mirror: When Ji Zha first went on his embassy, he passed north through the state of Xu. The Lord of Xu admired his sword and did not dare say so aloud. Ji Zha knew it in his heart, but as he was travelling to the states of the north he did not present it. — On his return he came to Xu, and the Lord of Xu was dead. So he untied his precious sword, hung it on the tree by the Lord of Xu's grave, and went on. His attendant said: "The Lord of Xu is dead. To whom is it being given?" Ji Zi said: "Not so. From the beginning my heart had already promised it. How should I betray my own heart because he has died?"
Dongpo's Note
Third of September, seven in the morning, and I had not slept. Two columns on a sheet.
Left, headed SELL, seven entries: 41,600. The bank will be under ninety by December. No cost of goods. The goods are genuinely good. Zhou gave them outright, no conditions. They spoil by next year. Spoiled helps nobody. Seven, and every one of them stands up.
Right, headed DON'T SELL, one entry: the sixteen cloth tags. Seven to one — which is a false score, because the seven all say the same thing. They all say: I need money.
Ji Zha came at first light with the lamp still on. Forty or so, tall, very thin, a neat dark blue-green deep robe, a sword at his waist with jade on the scabbard. He looked at the two columns before he looked at me. You haven't finished writing the one on the right. And: Ji Zha.
Xu. I was going north on an embassy and passed through Xu. The Lord of Xu gave me dinner. Did he ask for the sword? No. He never said one word. He just looked. Pushing it forward an inch at the waist: looked at it over dinner, and looked at it again seeing me to the gate. He was too embarrassed to ask. Did you give it? No. I still had to go north and meet several rulers. The sword is part of the dress. Give it away there and the rest of my stops are not respectable. And: so what I thought was: I'll give it to him on the way back. And: I did not say that out loud.
And on the way back? He was dead. A silence. I reached Xu and they told me he was gone. What did you do? I went to his grave. There was a tree beside it. I untied the sword and hung it on the tree, and then I left. Didn't your attendant say anything? He did. He asked: the Lord of Xu is dead — who is it being given to? And then, three times into the book: from the beginning my heart had already promised it. How should I betray my own heart because he has died?
What became of the sword? I don't know. Flat. Somebody took it, presumably. A good sword hanging on a tree gets taken sooner or later. Then hanging it was the same as not hanging it. It is not the same. Hand on the hilt: you are thinking that the sword had to reach his hand. He is gone; it cannot reach his hand. I knew that while I was tying it on. And, and I stood up: I did not hang it so that he would receive it. I hung it so that my half would not be void.
Then he asked about the tally. Yours is split in two. Yes. Only the two halves together count. Yes. And if the other half has been burned? Then it's void. Void with the magistrate, yes. Your half is still in your hand. Whether it is void is not the magistrate's to say. And: that family sewed cloth tags for five years. That was their half. They held it out for five years and nobody took it. And, from the table, before he went: now their half has been burned. And: taking it after it has burned is the only taking there is. — M.
Marco's Memo
Memo to file. Chengdu → Kucha, 3 September – 8 October 2030. Zhou Lixing's 800 jin.
1. What the sixteen tags actually encode, which took a night to see. Four houses, four dates: house 1 — 9 Aug; house 2 — 11 Aug; house 3 — 11 Aug; house 4 — 16 Aug. Seven days between the first and last. They did not treat four drying houses as one. They hung them separately, recorded them separately, and wrote the result on a cloth tag sewn to the sack — at maybe fifteen stitches to the inch, on sixty or seventy sacks a year, for five years, to three buyers, none of whom read them. The father sewed them for three years; the mother for two.
2. The split, 10 September. 1,600 bags. — 100 → Feng's canteen (the sixty-two calibrated tongues). — 30 → Chang. 30 → Abdul Rahman. Not to sell — to feel, against their own. — 40 → sealed and dated in my flat. — 40 → held for Zhou. — 1,360 → sold.
3. The label, which took two days to write. This batch is not my goods. August 2028, Kucha, the Ai family's four drying houses. The sacks had cloth tags sewn on saying which house and which day it was hung: house one 9 Aug, houses two and three 11 Aug, house four 16 Aug. The old man who made it died in the winter of 2029. The four houses were pulled down in March 2030 and the land is under greenhouses. This is the last batch this family made the old way. When it's gone there is no more and I cannot reorder. And the last line, seven drafts: the money from this batch, less bags, freight and the leaders' share, goes in full to that family. Under it: I'll post the transfer receipt when it's done.*
4. Nine days. 1,360 bags × ¥26 = ¥35,360. Less ¥7.75/bag (bag 1.35, freight 1.20, leader 5.20) = ¥10,540. Remitted: ¥24,820. Bank, 20 September. My whole-year net will be somewhere over ten thousand. This single transfer is about twice what I will earn this year, and I want it recorded that I sat with the sell/don't-sell sheet for a full night before I could see that the seven arguments were one argument.
5. Kucha, 8 October. Aishanjiang, 35, met me at the bus station in a white pickup full of plastic crates. "Uncle Zhou said you were coming. I've seen the money. I haven't touched it." The site is 20 km south. Six new greenhouses, bright film. The houses stood on the eastern block; the soil is turned and already planted, and there are mud-brick fragments in it the size of a fingernail. "I hired an excavator. One day. My father took three years to build them."
6. He had never tasted his own family's best. I gave him a bag — house one, August 2028. He stopped with his hand on the seal: "I've never eaten this." Never? "We sold it every year. What stayed was the broken ones. We ate the broken ones and sold the good ones." He tipped two into his palm and pinched one — the same motion as Chang, as Abdul Rahman, as me. Chewed slowly, standing at the edge of the turned field, for a long time. Did not say good and did not say bad. Said: "My father took this one down." How can you tell? "He took them down a bit early. I always wait another day. I always feel another day is safer." And: "He told me off about it once. He said: wait another day and that bit is gone." And: "I didn't know then which bit he meant." The second one into his mouth. "I know now."
7. He refused the money, and his reasons are not modest ones. "That batch was paid for in 2028. Uncle Zhou paid sixteen fifty a jin. Eight hundred jin, thirteen thousand two hundred. It was settled then." And: "So I can't take this. My six houses made a hundred and something thousand this year. I don't need it." Both true. This was the sentence I had been afraid of the whole way out: a transfer of ¥24,820 to a man who has left the trade, does not need it, and owes me nothing.
8. Why they kept sewing. Zhou told them not to. I asked why they carried on. — "I asked him that. I said they don't read them, why do you sew them." — "He said: whether they read them is their business." — And then, looking at the turned field: "If I don't sew it, then this sack and anybody else's sack are the same sack." That is the whole of Volume Three in one sentence, said by a man who has been dead for a year, reported by a son who grows tomatoes. The record was never for the buyer. It was to keep the goods from becoming interchangeable — which is a thing you do to the goods, not to the customer.
9. What he asked for instead, squatting at the field edge at dusk. "I don't want the money. But there's something you could do." Which is: take the twenty-four thousand and buy his father's kind of thing. "There are still people round here doing it. Not many — three families I know of. Old houses, still hanging." And: "Go and look." And the condition, stubbing the cigarette into the dirt and standing up: "And if you're going to tell them not to sew the tags, then don't go."
10. Position. ¥24,820 is committed, refused, and now re-designated as a purchase budget for three families I have never met, in a county I have been in for one day, on the instruction of a man who no longer produces anything. Against a bank balance of roughly ¥88,000 and a burn of ¥96,000. I have no idea whether this is the best decision I have made in three years or the end of the business. Both readings fit every number on the page.
English Highlight
"I did not hang it so that he would receive it. I hung it so that my half would not be void."
The lord of the small state had admired the sword over dinner and had been too embarrassed to ask — never said one word, only looked, and looked again at the gate. The traveller understood perfectly well, and did not offer it, because he had further courts to visit and the sword is part of the dress; give it away there and the rest of my stops are not respectable. What he decided, silently, was to give it on the way home.
On the way home the lord was dead. He went to the grave, untied the sword, hung it on the tree beside the mound, and walked on. His attendant asked the obvious question — the Lord of Xu is dead; who is it being given to? — and got the answer the story is remembered for: from the beginning my heart had already promised it. How should I betray my own heart because he has died?
Pressed on what became of the sword, he was unsentimental. I don't know. Somebody took it, presumably. A good sword hanging on a tree gets taken sooner or later. Then the hanging achieved nothing? It is not the same. And: you are thinking that the sword had to reach his hand. He is gone; it cannot reach his hand. I knew that while I was tying it on.
A contract in that world was a single object split in two, one half to each party, and it was enforceable only when the halves were brought together and matched. Which raises the question he put next: and if the other half has been burned?
Void, in front of a magistrate. Your half is still in your hand. Whether it is void is not the magistrate's to say.
The family in question had sewn a small cloth tag onto every sack of dried fruit they sold for five years — which drying house, which day it was hung — for three buyers, none of whom read them, one of whom had explicitly told them to stop. The father sewed them for three years and the mother for two. The father is dead, the houses are demolished, and the land grows cherry tomatoes now.
Asked why they had kept sewing, the son repeated what he had once been told. Whether they read them is their business. And: if I don't sew it, then this sack and anybody else's sack are the same sack.
Now their half has been burned. Taking it after it has burned is the only taking there is.
