English Mirror: The six states were destroyed not because their weapons were poor or their generalship bad. The fault lay in bribing Qin. Bribing Qin drained their strength, and that is the road to destruction. — Consider that their forefathers, exposed to frost and dew, hacked through thorn and bramble to come by a foot and an inch of land. Their descendants set no great store by it and handed it away to others like so much cut grass. Five cities ceded today, ten tomorrow, and then one night's easy sleep. They rise and look to their four borders, and the armies of Qin have come again. — The ancients said: "To serve Qin with land is to carry firewood to put out a fire — while the firewood is not used up, the fire is not out." That saying has it right.
Dongpo's Note
Second of September. A logistics park behind a half-finished road, third ring. C-block, unit seventeen, roller door up halfway. No lights inside; the light comes in under the door as one stripe on the floor. Woven sacks, fifty jin each, stacked six high to the roof beam.
The smell hits you at the door. Sweet, with a trace of old wood under it. I know that smell. It is what the sixty jin I threw away last year smelled like.
Zhou Lixing, forty-five or so, a washed-out polo shirt, thinning hair, on a plastic stool by the door. He stood up and put his hand out. You're younger than I thought. I said Mr Zhou. He waved it off: don't call me that. A room like this, it isn't the word.
He laid the accounts out without being asked and without dressing anything. I started in November 2028. Twenty-two. You were on twenty-six. I know. My purchase price was higher than yours. You paid fifteen; I paid sixteen fifty. I know that too. A look. You know? Luo asked around. A laugh that was not good to watch. What I thought was: give the grower one-fifty more and my goods beat his, and at twenty-two I'm still four cheaper. I did that sum for three months and it got better every time. And: I'll tell you now — that sum is still right.
So where did it go? July 2029. The nineteen out of Toksun. I've met him. You've met him? October, forty shops, sixty fen a bag lost, eighteen hundred a month. Silence. I didn't know that. And: if I'd known then, I wouldn't have cut.
Su Xun came out from behind the stack while Zhou was outside on a call — fifty or so, middling height, greying beard, dark Song everyday robe gone old, a rolled sheet in his hand. He slapped the bottom sack, wiped the dust off on his robe. This room is not goods. What is it? It is the land he ceded. And: Su Xun.
He asked for a number first: how many times has he cut? I didn't know. Then go and ask. Zhou: three. Twenty-two to nineteen ninety. Nineteen ninety to eighteen eighty. Last December, seventeen fifty. And the purchase price? Five seconds. Sixteen fifty to fourteen. Fourteen to twelve. Last December, eleven. Every cut downstream paid for upstream. Sixteen fifty to eleven in two and a half years — a third off.
Su Xun, beside me: five cities ceded today, ten tomorrow, and then one night's easy sleep. Was the sleep real? It was real. Perfectly flat. Cede the land and the Qin armies withdraw. The withdrawal is real. That night is genuinely peaceful. And, three times into the book: if it weren't peaceful, nobody would cede anything.
Then what — stand and fight? The six states could not win. Immediately. I did not make that clear in the essay. That essay was written for the Song. And: the Song were paying Liao and Xia hundreds of thousands a year. I abused the six states in order to abuse the Song. And the six states themselves? Their problem was not whether to fight. It was that they treated land as money. Unrolling the sheet a little: their forefathers came by a foot and an inch of it exposed to frost and dew, hacking through thorn and bramble. The grandsons set no store by it and handed it away like cut grass. And: because to the grandson, land and money are the same thing — both are numbers. And, and I looked back at the six tiers of sacks: but money spent can be earned again. Land ceded does not grow back.
What is this man's land? Go and ask him about his grower. He just told you sixteen fifty went to eleven. Ask him whether that family is planting this year. And from behind the stack, turning back: one more, and this one is for you. Sir. The last line of my essay is not about the six states. If, with all the greatness of the empire, you sink to repeating the six states' road to ruin — then you are lower than the six states. And: meaning: you are bigger than they were; if you still do this, you are worse than they were. And, going: you make two thousand four hundred a year. You are not the greatness of the empire. And: but those two families are your foot and inch of land. — M.
Marco's Memo
Memo to file. Chengdu, 2 September 2030. Zhou Lixing's warehouse. I did not buy anything and I am not going to.
1. His arithmetic was better than mine and it still ended here. Nov 2028: retail ¥22 against my ¥26, purchase ¥16.50 against my ¥15. He paid his grower more than I pay mine, and undercut me by four yuan, and both of those were true simultaneously and remained true. His own verdict: "that sum is still right." It is. What he did not have was one fact: that the ¥19 seller was an agency operator losing ¥0.60 a bag to buy platform weighting across forty shops, and would be gone in three months. I have that fact only because I flew to Toksun in October 2029 and walked into the shed. I did not hold my price out of principle. I held it because I knew something he didn't. That is not virtue, it is a trip I happened to take, and I want it written down that way before I start telling it the other way.
2. The cession, in two columns. — Retail: 22 → 19.90 → 18.80 → 17.50. — Purchase: 16.50 → 14 → 12 → 11. Every downstream cut was funded upstream. A third off the grower in two and a half years. And the mechanism Su Xun named, which is why it does not feel like a mistake while you are doing it: cede the land and the armies really do withdraw; that night is genuinely peaceful. If it weren't peaceful, nobody would cede anything.
3. What the land was, concretely. The Ai family, Kucha. Father, son, grandmother. Four drying houses. March 2030, Zhou rang to say the price was eleven again. "Uncle, we're not doing it this year." Not a change of trade — the houses are demolished. Greenhouses now. Cherry tomatoes. Four drying houses that existed in 2028 do not exist in 2030. Money spent can be earned again.
4. His actual question, which he had driven this whole meeting to ask. "I'm not asking you to take the six tonnes. I know you won't — the oldest of it is 2028. You're not stupid." Then: "I want to know why your two are still there. I paid more than you. I paid sixteen fifty for two years. You paid fifteen the whole time. Why is it my family that left and not yours?"
5. What I answered, which is four things that are not in the ¥15. — (a) Four visits a year, three or four days each, not to buy — to be there. He goes twice, both times to negotiate price. — (b) The three thermometers. Bought by Abdul Rahman himself for ¥36, reimbursement refused; later paid as ¥3,500 costed off the walking minutes he reported to me through his son. — (c) The slip. Which building, hung which day, down which day. I thought it was for the buyer. It is the only occasion in the year on which anybody asks that man how he does what he does. — (d) The thirty sour bags. The ones he keeps for himself and cannot sell. I said I wasn't selling them, I was giving them to old people in Chengdu. Seven or eight seconds of silence, and then: "then take more." His reply: "I haven't got one of the four." And: "I've known the Ai son five years. I don't know his mother's name." None of those four items appears in a purchase price, and all four of them are the price.
6. The sixteen sacks at the back, stacked a metre clear of everything else under a plastic sheet. 800 jin. The Ai family's first delivery, 2028, when he was paying 16.50 and the grandfather was still alive (the grandfather died winter 2029). The last batch that family ever made the old way. I opened a sack and felt one. Hard. Almost no give. — the exact hand-feel of Chang's doorway string, which I last held in April. Zhou: "It's no use now. The four houses are down, the old man's gone, the son grows cherry tomatoes and makes more doing it. Sitting here it'll spoil by next year." And then the reason for the whole morning: "I know you won't take the six tonnes. These eight hundred jin I'm not selling. I'm giving them. Take them."
7. And the condition, which he put as a question and which is the sharpest thing anybody has said to me this year. 800 jin = 1,600 bags. That is not a keepsake. That is a production run — roughly my entire 2028 output, and at ¥26 it is ¥41,600 of retail sitting under a plastic sheet, free. He saw me do the arithmetic. Pulling the roller door all the way up, standing in the light with his back to me: "If you sell it, then it's still my road." And: "If you don't sell it, tell me what you're going to do with it."
8. Where I actually am, and I am not going to pretend otherwise tonight. I want to sell it. ¥41,600 against a bank balance that will be under ninety thousand by December is not a temptation I can wave away with a sentence about references. And the goods are genuinely good — better, by hand, than anything I have bought in three years. And: the family that made it is gone, so nothing I do can order more. Which means every bag I sell is a bag subtracted from the only physical record that a particular way of working in Kucha ever existed. 1,600 bags is a lot of copies of something. It is also exactly one edition, and there will not be a second. No decision tonight. Deadline is real, though: he says it spoils by next year, and he is right.

"If it weren't peaceful, nobody would cede anything."
The essay is a thousand years old and its thesis is one line: the six states were destroyed not because their weapons were poor or their generalship bad — the fault lay in bribing Qin. Land handed over to buy a season's quiet, and then another season's.
What makes it more than a scolding is the sentence that concedes the other side's case. Five cities ceded today, ten tomorrow, and then one night's easy sleep. Asked whether that sleep was real, its author said yes, flatly. Cede the land and the Qin armies withdraw. The withdrawal is real. That night is genuinely peaceful.
The trap is not that the payment fails. The trap is that it works, immediately and visibly, every single time, and that the cost falls somewhere that does not show up until it is unrecoverable.
He was equally direct about what the six states should have done instead, which was not to fight — the six states could not win — and equally direct that the essay was never really about them: the Song were paying Liao and Xia hundreds of thousands a year. I abused the six states in order to abuse the Song.
The diagnosis, when he gave it, was about accounting. Their forefathers came by a foot and an inch of that land exposed to frost and dew, hacking through thorn and bramble. The grandsons set no store by it and handed it away like cut grass — because to the grandson, land and money are the same thing. Both are numbers.
And then: money spent can be earned again. Land ceded does not grow back.
The man in the warehouse had cut his retail price three times over two and a half years, twenty-two to seventeen fifty, and had funded every cut out of what he paid the family who grew the fruit: sixteen fifty, fourteen, twelve, eleven. In March the son had told him, politely, uncle, we're not doing it this year. The four drying houses have been pulled down. The land is under greenhouses now, growing cherry tomatoes.
Six tonnes remain, going stale in a rented unit, at a price nobody will pay.
You are not the greatness of the empire. But those two families are your foot and inch of land.
