English Mirror: In my poverty I traded with Bao Shu and took the larger share of the profit, and he did not think me greedy, for he knew I was poor. Three times I held office and three times I was dismissed, and he did not think me worthless, for he knew my time had not come. Three times I went into battle and three times I ran, and he did not think me a coward, for he knew I had an old mother… My parents gave me birth; Bao Shu is the one who knew me. — [Dying, refusing to recommend him:] Bao Shuya is an honest and upright man, but he will have nothing to do with anyone less good than himself, and once he has heard of a man's fault he does not forget it his whole life.
Dongpo's Note
The call came on 12 February. He asked about the March despatch date first, and then stopped. I'm going to Zhangye. I said fine and did not ask what for. And then: bring that notebook of yours. Which one? The one with the fifty thousand in it. And: when you wrote it down you added a small line: Chang Yushan's own statement, written by Marco. A pause. You have to be the one who strikes it through.
Zhangye, north of the city, an old six-storey block, third floor. Through the door is a small north-facing room with a desk and a steel cabinet — where he works. A landline, a pen pot, a notebook, very old and rounded at the edges. I spent a whole day in Zhangye in November the year before last and never came inside this room; that time we talked outdoors.
Chang arrived a little after eight and sat for an hour and a half talking about everything else: that the grapes were twenty days early this year; that the old man in the Dunhuang village had been in hospital again before the New Year; about his own back. An hour and a half and neither of them mentioned it.
*At ten he stood up, fetched a cloth sack from the doorway — the sort flour comes in, with the printing still on it — and put it on the table, without a sound, because what is in it is paper. Five bundles, each with an elastic band. He stacked them, pushed them across, and took his hand back. He did not say anything at all.
Nor did Luo. He looked at the five bundles for about ten seconds and then did something I had not expected: he did not reach for them. He turned his head. Xiao Ma. The book.
I opened it to the last page. At the top, two characters: unsettled. Below: 17 October 2018. Chang Yushan (Dunhuang) owes Luo — (Zhangye) goods payment, RMB fifty thousand exactly. Unsettled. And under that, smaller: Recorded 21 April 2028, on Chang's own statement, written by Marco.
*I took a pen out of the pot, looked at one of them and then the other, and neither said anything. I drew a line through the two characters. Beside it I wrote two more and a date: settled, 19 February 2029.
Half a minute in which nobody spoke. A car sounded its horn outside. Then Luo reached over, took the five bundles, did not count them, and put them in the drawer under the desk; and closing the drawer he spoke for the first time that day. Noodles at midday.
Guan Zhong was in the north room in the afternoon, sixty or so, a good dark robe, capped, walking with a slight limp. He looked at the open page. Ten years and four months. Luo counts from the day he stopped taking his calls. Guan Zhong.
His own debt, told without any penitence in it. When I was young I was poor. I traded with Bao Shu. When we divided the profits I took the larger share. How much larger? I don't remember. Every time, though. And: he knew. He said nothing. Why not? He knew I was poor.
Then three more, counted off fast, like a list said many times. I gave him advice and it failed and left him poorer — he did not call me a fool; he knew that sometimes the times are with you and sometimes not. I held office three times and was thrown out three times — he did not call me worthless; he knew my time had not come. A pause for the fourth: I went into battle three times and ran three times. And: he did not call me a coward. He knew I had an old mother at home.
Did you ever repay any of it? No. Not once? Not the money. Nor the bad advice. Then how did you thank him? I governed Qi for forty years. And: what he wanted was not repayment. What he wanted was that I should succeed.
I said that sounded a little cheap. It is cheap. No resistance at all. I said it. He never did. He never said a sentence like that in his life. Then what did he say? Nothing. He gave me the chancellorship and served under me for decades, and never once mentioned the money.
And then the last thing. On his deathbed the duke came and asked who could be chancellor after him, and came to Bao Shuya's name. I said no. Why? Because he can't do it. Flatly. Bao Shu is a good man. Too good. He will have nothing to do with anyone less good than himself, and once he hears that a man has done something wrong he remembers it for life. A man like that cannot govern a state.
Did you think about how he would take it? I did. I knew somebody would tell him. Did he find out? He did. What did he say?
He said: that is exactly why I recommended him. — M.*
Marco's Memo
Memo to file. Zhangye, 19 February 2029. Block closes.
1. The payment, and the whole design of the last fifteen months is in how it was performed. — An hour and a half of unrelated conversation first. Grapes twenty days early; the old man's hospital stay; his own back. — The money set down without one word spoken. Five bundles, cloth flour sack, no sound. — The creditor did not take it and did not count it. He said three characters: the book. — The person who recorded it struck it out — because the entry says written by Marco, and he had said on the telephone: you have to be the one who strikes it. — And the first sentence spoken by anybody after the drawer closed: noodles at midday. Nobody made a speech. Which is Daozhen at Mogao, 18 November 2027, exactly: he brings the wheat and sets it down; I add a stroke; done. He does not have to explain three years, and if he had to, he would not come (ch.130). Fifteen months from that walkway to this desk. The instrument worked precisely as specified, and its whole function turned out to be the removal of a requirement to speak.
2. And the detail I would not have designed: the annotation is what made me necessary. I wrote Chang Yushan's own statement, written by Marco in April 2028 as bookkeeping hygiene. It is the reason a man had a proxy flown in from Chengdu. A record with a named recorder creates an obligation on the recorder. I did not intend that. It is the third position on the paper again (ch.149), arrived at by accident.
3. Guan Zhong on the debtor's side, which is the counterpart of Bao Shuya in ch.149. — Four debts, none repaid: profits over-taken, ruinous advice, three dismissals, three retreats from battle. He knew I was poor. He knew my time had not come. He knew I had an old mother. — The money was never repaid and the advice never made good. I governed Qi for forty years. — What he wanted was not repayment. What he wanted was that I should succeed. — And, unprompted, the correction: that is cheap, and I said it, not him. He never said a sentence like that in his life. He gave me the office and served under me for decades and never once mentioned the money. The formulation that lets the debtor off is always the debtor's own formulation. Recorded because I have used it myself — I have told myself more than once this year that what Abdul Rahman wants is not payment but for the thing to work (ch.156, ¥64,000).
4. And the deathbed refusal, which is the hardest thing in this volume. Asked who should succeed him, he named Bao Shuya's disqualification aloud: too good; will not associate with anyone less good than himself; hears of a man's fault once and remembers it for life; cannot govern a state. He knew it would be reported. It was. That is exactly why I recommended him. The highest return on a favour is not gratitude and not repayment. It is being willing to say the true thing about the person who did you the favour — and the only person who can receive that without injury is the person who did the favour for the right reason in the first place.
5. What the fifty thousand became, and I did not see it coming. — July 2028: Luo signed as 口承人, undertaking to take the three houses' output if I fail — 3,000 jin in year one. At ¥15: ¥45,000. — He signed it with nothing behind it. Tonight: I never dared think about where the forty-five thousand would come from. When I signed I thought: it'll never be called. — And: this morning I counted. Fifty thousand is exactly enough. — He is not going to trade with it. He is going to leave it in the drawer. I signed that guarantee on nothing but my word, and I knew in myself it didn't count. Now there is forty-five thousand in the drawer. From today that piece of paper is real. An eleven-year-old debt has become the collateral for a guarantee given to a third party who did not exist when the debt was contracted.
6. And the sentence over dinner that I am still turning over. Chang, the third thing he said all day: old Luo — if you can't produce it next year, I've got it. Two hours after clearing an eleven-year debt, the debtor offers the creditor credit. Luo did not thank him. He said: go and repair your third drying house first. And they talked about buildings and channels and the weather, and neither of them mentioned the fifty thousand again.
7. New entry, opened tonight on the following page, in the same form. 19 July 2028. Luo — (Zhangye) stands as guarantor for Marco (Chengdu), undertaking to take up the Turpan three houses' output, 3,000 / 5,000 / 8,000 jin over three years. Unsettled. Recorded 19 February 2029, written by Marco on his own account. What is owed here is not money. It is that a man of fifty-six has put forty-five thousand yuan in a drawer and will not touch it, against the year I fail to come. *Written underneath: I cannot repay this one. But it has to be recorded.
8. The question at the station, and it is the one for next month. Jiang's year is up on 10 March. How are you going to negotiate it? I have not thought about it. Think. And his framing, which is better than any I had: last year she turned away four suppliers and gave up seventy or eighty thousand. You paid her two thousand and forty this year. That year she bought with money. So work out what she pays with next year.

"My parents gave me birth. Bao Shu is the one who knew me."
The list behind that sentence is not flattering to the man who says it. In poverty they traded together and he took the larger share of the profits every time; he gave advice that failed and left his friend poorer; he held office three times and was dismissed three times; and he went into battle three times and ran away three times.
He knew I was poor. He knew my time had not come. He knew I had an old mother at home.
Asked whether any of it was ever repaid: no. Not the money, and not the bad advice. Then how was it thanked? I governed Qi for forty years. And: what he wanted was not repayment. What he wanted was that I should succeed.
Which sounds convenient, and he agreed that it did, immediately and without defending himself. It is cheap. And I said it. He never did. He never said a sentence like that in his life. What the other man did instead was give up the chancellorship, serve under him for decades, and never once mention the money.
The account has a coda that is rarely quoted with it. On his deathbed the duke asked who should succeed him and came to the name of the man who had made his whole career possible, and he said: no. He cannot do it. And gave the reasons: too upright; will not associate with anyone less good than himself; hears of a man's fault once and remembers it for a lifetime; a man like that cannot govern a state.
He knew it would be repeated to him, and it was.
He said: that is exactly why I recommended him.
Two thousand seven hundred years later, in a north-facing room in Zhangye, a man set a flour sack on a desk, took out five bundles of notes, pushed them across and withdrew his hand without speaking. The creditor did not reach for them and did not count them. He turned his head and said three characters — the book — and a third man, who had entered the debt in a ledger ten months earlier over the annotation on his own statement, written by Marco, drew a line through the two characters at the head of the page and wrote settled and the date.
Half a minute in which nobody said anything, and a car horn outside. Then the notes went into a drawer, and the first sentence anyone spoke was: noodles at midday.
