English Mirror: Here is one and the same person: when he is rich and honoured, his own relatives are in awe of him; when he is poor and low, they make light of him — and if his own family does this, how much more everyone else. And had I owned two qing of land outside the walls of Luoyang, would I ever have come to wear the seals of six states? — When he grew sleepy over his books he drove an awl into his own thigh, and the blood ran down to his feet.
Dongpo's Note
Three days ago, one line from Xiao Lei: Brother Ma, I've got a point. I sent two characters — where — and he sent a pin. Forty minutes on the metro and eight on foot, into a compound built around 2010, six storeys, no lifts. Beside the gatehouse there is a small room, and on its door two lines in red paint, badly done.
Lei Zhigang. And a mobile number. And beneath, smaller: if there's a problem with the goods, ring this.
I stood in front of that door for a while, because I have seen those two and a half lines. Forty stickers, 10 March last year; the last line was my name and a mobile number; I stood in a print shop hesitating over that number for a full minute and put it on anyway.
The door opened. He is thinner than a year ago, in a down jacket zipped to the chin. Brother Ma, there's no heating in there.
Ten square metres and a bit. One table, two plastic stools, a three-tier rack, empty. An electric heater in the corner, unplugged. A ruled exercise book open on the table with names and figures down the page. He plugged the heater in and said: it eats electricity; I don't usually turn it on.
Rent: eighteen thousand a year, from the property management; the room used to hold mops and brooms. Where did eighteen thousand come from? Last year. Flat: I didn't spend anything last year. I saved twenty-three. And the other five? Racks, scales, getting the power on, the licence. A pause. And those two lines. How much were the two lines? Forty. — The cobbler at the gate wrote them.
Then the eleven questions, the same eleven as in the teahouse in November, which embarrassed me to ask and did not appear to strike him as odd. Last sale 18 January; Yunnan baby potatoes; four hundred and twenty jin; a hundred and seven buyers — four jin a head, which is right for a five-jin or two-and-a-half-jin bag.
A year ago he reported four thousand jin and three hundred and ten buyers, thirteen jin a head. Volume down by a factor of ten. The figures now reconcile.
Who staffs the point? Me. You work days? Yes. Off at six thirty, here at seven, seven till half nine. Goods that arrive during the day? They go in the gatehouse. The old man there takes them in for me. Do you pay him? Three hundred a month. He didn't want it; I made him take it — which I learned two months ago from somebody else and did not say so.
Group size three hundred and forty. How many do you know by face? He took longer over that one. Sixty-odd.
Su Qin came in while Xiao Lei was fetching a carton from the gatehouse: thirty-odd, very thin, in a robe of visibly good cloth that does not fit him, as though it were someone else's, and something not quite right about how he put his right leg down. Ten square metres. Yes. Su Qin.
Years travelling and talking and nobody would employ him; money gone, clothes worn through, home to Luoyang. My sister-in-law wouldn't cook for me. My wife didn't get down off the loom. My brothers laughed. What did they say? They said: we Luoyang people farm and trade and are content with two parts in ten. You dropped that to go and work your tongue. And: poor as this — isn't it what you deserve?
So he shut the door and went through every book in the house, found one of them, and read it for a year. Read what? How to work a man out. What he wants, sitting in front of you. What he is afraid of. And: when I got sleepy I drove an awl into my thigh. I looked at his right leg. The blood ran down to my feet — said with no more heat than a piece of old household business.
The second homecoming: the seals of six states, dozens of carriages, and my sister-in-law on the ground, not daring to look up. He asked her why she had been so haughty before and was so respectful now. She said: because you are high-placed now, and have money. And then the sigh, and the line: had I owned two qing of land outside the walls of Luoyang, would I ever have come to wear the seals of six states?
I asked whether he was glad not to have had the land. Not glad. Flatly. I am saying that it was not any merit of mine. I had no other road. And then the second half, which is heavier than the first: a man with two qing of land goes his whole life without ever finding out whether he could have done it.
Then he nodded at the door. That young man outside. The terms he signed two years ago — why did he sign them? Because he had nothing. Yes. And, standing: now he has ten square metres. With ten square metres he will start doing arithmetic. And from the doorway: use him while he still has only ten square metres.
I said that was an ugly thing to say. It is ugly. And: but it is not telling you to take advantage of him. It is telling you to settle the terms now. And: wait until he has his two qing, and both sides will be calculating. — M.
Marco's Memo
Memo to file. Chengdu, 5 February 2029.
1. What he has, twelve months after being declined (ch.136). — One collection point: ~10 m², rented from the property management, formerly the mop cupboard. ¥18,000/year, paid out of ¥23,000 saved by spending nothing in 2028. The remaining ¥5,000 went on racks, scales, power, licence — and ¥40 for the two lines painted on the door. — Group: 340 members; ~60 known by face (against Guo's 147/110, ch.136). — Last sale 18 Jan: 420 jin, 107 buyers = 4 jin/head, correct for the product. A year ago: 4,000 jin, 310 buyers, 13 jin/head, which did not reconcile. Volume down tenfold. The numbers now hold together. That is the whole of the change and it is the change I asked for. — Staffed by him, 19:00–21:30 after a day job; daytime deliveries taken in by the gatehouse man at ¥300/month, forced on him.
2. The door. His name, a mobile number, and "if there's a problem with the goods, ring this." Provenance, given at the end and not before: of the five trial bags I gave him in March 2028 — not to sell, to eat — one carried a house-three sticker with my name and number on it. He never replied at the time. A man selling something put his own number on the bag. And: I thought about it for a year. Recorded because I had written that gesture off. He did not acknowledge it for eleven months and then spent ¥40 reproducing it. The transmission of a practice is not visible at the time of transmission.
3. Su Qin, and the reading that matters is not the ambition. — Had I owned two qing of land outside Luoyang, would I ever have worn the seals of six states? — Not said as gratitude for hardship: it was not any merit of mine; I had no other road. — And: a man with two qing of land goes his whole life without ever finding out whether he could have done it.
4. Applied, and I do not like the application. Xiao Lei signed terms in 2026 under which the goods, the collection points and the cash were all somebody else's, because he had nothing. He now has ten square metres, and: with ten square metres he will start doing arithmetic. The instruction: use him while he still has only ten square metres — which I said was ugly, and which turned out not to mean what I assumed. Not "take advantage now." "Settle the terms now." And: wait until he has his two qing and both sides will be calculating. Which is ch.133 from the other end: the size of a commitment must sit below what the counterparty can afford to lose. What is affordable to a man with ten square metres and what is affordable to a man with a warehouse are different numbers, and the right time to write it down is before it changes.
5. Allocation, decided in the room: he gets June, not March or April. — March is Jiang's under the exclusivity. April is jujube and easy. — June is the twelve-month-old mulberry: won't spoil, aroma faded, extent untested, five lines of printed ignorance, ¥26 with ¥3 refundable to anyone who finds it thin (ch.147). — His question: that's the hardest of the four, isn't it. Why give it to me? — Because you know sixty of your three hundred and forty by face. I don't know whether June is any good. I need somebody I can reach. Which is Guo's rule (ch.139: give the hardest paper to the student who can read it), applied one layer up — to the distributor rather than the customer. Difficult goods do not go to the largest channel. They go to the channel that can answer a question afterwards.
6. And his question back, which was not about this consignment. If it comes out thin — will you still give me the next one? — Yes. Why? — Whether it's thin is the goods' business. Whether you tell me is yours. I did not invent that sentence and knew it as I said it. It is Qin's delivery-note column (ch.152: not asking whether it was good, giving him somewhere to put it), and Chang's east-end variance (ch.132), and Chunyu Yi's ten deaths (ch.153). I have now heard the same rule from three trades and repeated it in a fourth as though it were mine.
7. Zhou approached him in December: 30% against my 20%. On ¥22 that is ¥6.60 a bag against my ¥5.20 — ¥1.40 more per bag. He declined. Reason, and it is the sharpest thing said today: because he didn't want my point. He wanted my eight groups. The same asset that was stripped from him is the only asset a buyer wants, and the thing he has spent eighteen thousand yuan and a year of evenings building is the thing nobody is bidding for. He turned down the higher rate to protect the part with no bid on it.
8. What this changes about my own position. I have spent a year writing that the unpaid record is the asset (ch.151–154, ch.158). Here is a man who bought one with his entire savings, and the market's revealed price for it is zero. That is not a refutation, but it is the strongest evidence against me that I have and I am recording it as such. The counter, such as it is: Zhou's eight-group asset is rented and Lei's ten square metres is not. Whether that matters depends entirely on whether anything ever pays for it, and this June is the first test of that with real money in it — 1,200 bags of the worst product I have, sold by the smallest leader I have, at full price with a refund clause.

"Had I owned two qing of land outside the walls of Luoyang, would I ever have come to wear the seals of six states?"
It is usually quoted as a boast. It is the opposite of one.
He had spent years travelling and talking and nobody had employed him, and he came home to Luoyang with his money gone and his clothes worn through, and his sister-in-law would not cook for him, and his wife did not get down off the loom, and his brothers told him that people from Luoyang farm and trade and are content with two parts in ten, and you dropped all that to go and work your tongue — poor as this, isn't it what you deserve?
So he shut the door and read for a year, and when he grew sleepy he drove an awl into his own thigh.
The second homecoming had dozens of carriages in it, and the same sister-in-law on the ground not daring to raise her head, and when he asked her why she had been haughty then and was respectful now, she said: because you are high-placed now, and have money.
And the sigh that followed was not about her. Asked, long afterwards, whether he was glad to have had nothing, he refused the question. Not glad. I am saying it was not any merit of mine. I had no other road.
And then the part that is worth more than the aphorism: a man with two qing of land goes his whole life without ever finding out whether he could have done it.
The modern instance was a ten-square-metre room beside a gatehouse in eastern Chengdu, formerly the mop cupboard, eighteen thousand yuan a year, paid for by a man who spent nothing at all for twelve months, staffed by him personally between seven and half past nine after a full day's work, and unheated because the heater eats electricity.
Two years earlier the same man had signed terms under which the goods were not his, the collection points were not his, and the money did not pass through his hands, because at the time he had nothing. Now he has ten square metres, and a competitor has offered him half again the commission he is currently earning, and he has turned it down — for a reason he gave without any self-congratulation at all.
Because he didn't want my point. He wanted my eight groups.
On the door, in bad red paint that cost forty yuan, are his own name, his own telephone number, and one further line: if there's a problem with the goods, ring this.
