段一·现身
十月九日，上午十点二十。
蒋姐发来一张截图。
前面没有话。
图发过来以后，隔了大概二十秒，才来一句：
「马老师，你看看这个。」
马可点开。
是另一个群的聊天记录，有人转发的一条商品信息。
上头是一张照片。
照片拍的是一座晾房，土坯的，花格子的洞。
光从洞里进来，落在一排一排的串上。
这张照片拍得很好。
比他自己拍的那些好。
照片底下是文字。
七行。
马可一行一行往下看。
看到第三行的时候，他坐直了。
看完七行，他把手机放在桌上，站起来在屋里走了两圈。
然后他回来，把那七行一个字一个字抄进了本子。
抄的是这样的：
新疆吐鲁番。玉素甫。第七座晾房。
二〇二八年八月底挂，四十五天。
不见太阳，只走风。见了太阳会发褐。
四斤半鲜葡萄，出一斤。
无核白。
他十二座房，这一批是第七座。东头和西头出来的不一样，够分两个级。这一批是东头。
玉素甫师傅今年五十八。这十二座房是他爹垒的。
抄完他在下面写了一行：
「一行不差。」
又写了一行：
「除了名字、座数、岁数。」
写完这两行，他又看了一遍那张图。
图底下还有两行小字，是那个卖家自己加的。
第一行写的是：产地直发，源头把控。
第二行写的是：每一批可溯源。
马可看着这两行，忽然松了一口气。
因为这两行不是他的。
这两行是那种他去年十一月被常玉山划掉的话。
十四行划掉九行，划掉的就是这种。
他在本子上写了一行：
「他抄了我七行，自己加了两行。」
他停了一下，写完：
「加的那两行，是我一年前被人划掉的那两行。」
又写了一行：
「这就是差别。」
这一行写完他自己看了看，把它划掉了。
因为他知道这不是差别。
买东西的人不会注意那两行。
注意到那两行的人，本来就买他的。
他重新写了一句：
「这不是差别。这是我想让它是差别。」
段二·古文镜像
“楚人有卖其珠于郑者，为木兰之柜，薰以桂椒，缀以珠玉，饰以玫瑰，辑以翡翠。郑人买其椟而还其珠。此可谓善卖椟矣，未可谓善鬻珠也。”
“今世之谈也，皆道辩说文辞之言，人主览其文而忘有用。”
English Mirror: A man of Chu selling a pearl in Zheng made for it a casket of magnolia wood, perfumed it with cassia and pepper, strung it with pearls and jade, ornamented it with rose-stone and bound it with kingfisher feathers. The man of Zheng bought the casket and gave back the pearl. This may be called a good selling of caskets; it cannot be called a good selling of pearls. — The talk of the present age is all elaborated rhetoric, and the ruler reads the wording and forgets the use.
那天上午十一点，马可给阿里木发了一条。
他问的只有一句：
「今年吐鲁番的葡萄是几号挂的。」
阿里木回得很快。
回的是：
「八月十二。」
下面一条：
「今年热，早了半个月。」
马可把这两条截图，跟那张七行的图并排放在一起。
那七行上写的是「二〇二八年八月底挂」。
吐鲁番今年八月十二挂。
敦煌今年八月五挂。
这两个地方，今年都早。
没有一家是八月底挂的。
马可在本子上写了一行：
「他写的是往年的日子。」
他停了一下，写完：
「他没有问过今年。」
又写了一行，这一行他写完自己停了几秒：
「我要不是每十天收一句，我也不知道今年是八月十二。」
那天中午，马可想的是怎么说。
他想了三种。
第一种：在群里发一条，说那七行是抄的。
这一种他想了十分钟就否了。
因为他拿不出证。
他的七行三月发的，人家的十月发的。
先后有了，可是「先」不等于「原」。
而且这七行里没有一句是他发明的。
四斤半出一斤是常玉山说的。
不见太阳是常玉山说的。
东西头差两个级是常玉山说的。
他做的只有一件事：把这些话按顺序摆好。
第二种：发一条，说自己那批是真的，有单有回音。
这一种他想了半个钟头。
否掉的理由是：说自己真，等于说别人假。
说别人假，他得拿出别人假在哪儿。
他手里只有一个日子。
八月底和八月十二。
这个日子说出去，八千九百个人里，有几个知道这是什么意思？
第三种，他还没想出来。
段三·事件主体
韩非是那天下午出现的。
下午两点多，马可在屋里，桌上摊着两张纸。
一张是他三月印的那七行。
一张是今天抄的那七行。
两张并排。
门没有开，可是屋里多了一个人。
四十上下，穿得很素，深色的，没有一点花。
他坐下的时候，先看了一眼桌上那两张。
他说的第一句是：
“这两张，哪一张好看？”
马可说：
“他那张。”
那个人说：
“韩非。”
那天下午，韩非先讲了那个卖珠的。
他讲得很快，像在举例，不像在说故事。
他说：
“楚国有个人，到郑国卖一颗珠。”
他说：
“他做了一个盒子。”
他一样一样数：
“木兰的木头。用桂和椒熏过。缀了珠玉。镶了玫瑰石。边上用翡翠缠了。”
马可说：
“这个盒子花的钱不少。”
韩非说：
“比珠贵。”
他说：
“郑国人买了盒子，把珠还给他了。”
马可笑了一下。
韩非没有笑。
他说：
“你笑那个郑国人。”
马可说：
“是。”
韩非说：
“多数人都笑他。”
他把手放在桌上。
他说了一句，马可当天在本子上抄了三遍：
“那个盒子是楚国人自己做的。”
马可停住了。
韩非说：
“郑国人没有骗他。”
他说：
“郑国人只是照着他教的挑。”
他说：
“他花了那么多工夫做盒子，就是在告诉买的人：好东西在盒子上。”
他抬起头。
他说：
“买的人学会了。”
马可在那张桌子前面坐着，看着自己那七行。
七行，九个数，零形容词。
改了六遍。
这七行他花了一年。
从去年十一月常玉山划掉九行开始，一直改到今年三月。
这一年里，他做的最用力的一件事，就是把这七行做好。
韩非说：
“你那七行做得好。”
他说：
“好到人家照着抄，一个字不用改。”
那天下午，马可问了他最想问的。
他说：
“先生，那我该怎么办？”
韩非说：
“你先说你想怎么办。”
马可把三种说了。
头两种他自己已经否了。
韩非听完，说了一句：
“否得对。”
马可问：
“第三种是什么？”
韩非说：
“你自己想。”
他停了一下。
他说：
“我先跟你说一件你还没有想到的。”
马可说：
“先生说。”
韩非说：
“你七月贴出去那六行，他看见了。”
马可愣住了。
他把手机拿过来，翻到七月那一条。
成本单，六行。
一袋二十六。果七块五。袋一块三五。运一块二。团长五块二。剩下十块七五，是我的。
他抬起头。
韩非说：
“他看见这六行，知道两件事。”
他伸出一根手指。
“一，你的货，产地十五块一斤。”
第二根。
“二，你二十六块里，自己拿十块七五。”
他把手放下。
他说：
“他定二十二。”
他说：
“二十二里，他还剩六块七五。”
他抬起头。
他说了一句，马可当天下午在屋里坐了一个钟头：
“你那六行，是给他写的说明书。”
马可问了一句：
“先生，那七月那六行，我是不是不该贴？”
韩非说：
“该贴。”
这两个字说得很快。
马可抬起头。
韩非说：
“你不贴，他们算的是四十三倍。”
他说：
“你贴了，他们算的是三倍半。”
他说：
“这个账你七月就算过。”
马可说：
“是。”
韩非说：
“贴的时候你只算了买的人。”
他把手放在桌上。
他说：
“你没有算卖的人。”
他停了一下。
他说了后半句：
“同一张纸，买的人看见的是你老实。”
他抬起头。
“卖的人看见的是你的价钱表。”
马可在那张桌子前面坐着，把这两句抄下来。
抄完他问了一句：
“先生，那我以后还贴不贴？”
韩非说：
“贴。”
马可说：
“贴了他还是照着定价。”
韩非说：
“他本来也定得出。”
这一句马可没有跟上。
韩非说：
“他去问一趟新疆，也知道产地十五。”
他说：
“他去问一个团长，也知道佣金两成。”
他把手放在桌上。
他说：
“你那六行，省了他两个礼拜。”
他抬起头。
他说了一句，马可当天在本子上抄了两遍：
“你泄的不是密。”
他停了一下。
“你泄的是工夫。”
马可在本子上写了一行：
「公开成本，不是把秘密给人。」
他停了一下，写完：
「是把两个礼拜的活给人。」
又写了一行：
「两个礼拜的活值多少？」
他算了一下。
两个礼拜，一个人，跑一趟新疆，加打听。
按他自己去年的账，一万块出头。
他在下面写完：
「一万块。」
再写一行：
「我用一万块，买了八千九百个人不算那个四十三倍。」
这一行写完，他自己看了两遍。
他觉得这个买卖不亏。
可是他也知道，这一万块每年都要送一次。
因为成本单每年都要重贴。
贴一次，来一个。
那天下午，韩非说了那句最要紧的。
他说：
“你现在有两条路。”
他说：
“一条是把那七行做得更好。”
马可说：
“做得更好，他还是抄。”
韩非说：
“对。”
他说：
“而且你做得越好，抄的人越省事。”
他说：
“你等于替他改稿。”
马可问：
“另一条呢？”
韩非说：
“把珠拿出来。”
马可问：
“珠是什么？”
韩非说了一句，这一句是这一回的骨：
“抄的人抄好看的。”
他停了一下。
“不好看的，他不抄。”
马可问了一句：
“先生，不好看的东西，买的人也不看。”
韩非说：
“多数不看。”
他说得很干脆。
马可说：
“那我印它干什么？”
韩非说：
“一百个里有五个看。”
这一句说完，马可停住了。
因为这个数他八月在嘉峪关听过一模一样的。
秦师傅说的是：一百个里有五个写。
那五个，就是那六十一家里的。
韩非说：
“你要那九十五个吗？”
马可说：
“要。”
韩非说：
“那九十五个，二十二块和二十六块，你争不过。”
他说得一点也不留情。
他说：
“他比你便宜四块。”
他说：
“明年会有人比他便宜四块。”
他抬起头。
他说：
“那九十五个，会一直往下走。”
马可问：
“那五个呢？”
韩非说了一句，马可当天晚上在纸上画了框：
“那五个是看了字才买的。”
他停了一下。
“看字买的人，也会看第二次的字。”
他把手放下。
“别人给不了他第二次的字。”
马可在本子上写了一行：
「九十五个买的是价钱。」
他停了一下，写完：
「五个买的是下一次还有字。」
又写了一行：
「三月两百袋，五个点是十个人。」
再写一行：
「十个人不够。」
这一行写完，他停了很久，才写下面这一行：
「可是十个人是唯一不会被四块钱带走的那些。」
写完这一行，马可又算了一笔。
他算的是三年。
头一年，两百袋，十个人。
这十个人第二年还在，而且带来的人也是看字买的。
就算一年一个带一个。
第二年二十个，第三年四十个。
四十个人，一次八十斤。
他把这个数写下来，看了一会儿。
四十个人，三年。
这个数小得可怜。
他这一年跑了两趟新疆，见了十几个人，写了一百八十页本子。
换来的是三年以后四十个人。
马可把笔放下，在屋里站了一会儿。
然后他坐回去，在这个数下面写了一行：
「四十个人太少。」
他停了很久，才写下面这一行：
「可是那九十五个人，第三年不是我的，是第三个二十二块的。」
又写一行：
「四十个人是我的。」
这一行写完，他忽然想起韩非刚才那句「你要那九十五个吗」。
他当时答的是「要」。
现在他想改这个答案，可是韩非已经不在了。
他在本子上写了改过的答案：
「要。可是不能用降价去要。」
他停了一下，把这一行写完：
「用降价要来的九十五个，第二年是别人的九十五个。」
段四·钩子结尾
那天傍晚六点，马可去了郭老师那个小区。
不是去谈事。
是那天下午蒋姐说她在那儿。
三个人在小区门口那个提货点站着说。
郭老师的车库门开着，里头空的。
蒋姐第一句就问了：
“他那个二十二。”
马可说：
“我看见了。”
蒋姐说：
“便宜四块。”
马可说：
“是。”
蒋姐说：
“你那个贵四块，贵在哪儿？”
这一句问得很平常，一点也不为难人。
可是马可站在那儿，答了很久才答出来。
他说的是实话：
“贵在吐鲁番那边三个人今年改了做法。”
蒋姐说：
“哪三个人？”
马可说：
“一个记，一个装，一个堆。”
蒋姐没有说话。
过了几秒，她说了一句：
“这个我发不出去。”
马可说：
“我知道。”
蒋姐说：
“我发这一句，人家问我，那我买的这袋跟他那袋有什么不一样。”
她说：
“我答不上来。”
郭老师这时候插了一句。
她说：
“我有一个办法。”
两个人都看她。
郭老师说：
“我们买一袋他的。”
蒋姐说：
“买回来干什么？”
郭老师说：
“吃。”
她说得很自然。
她说：
“一天一个，吃二十天。”
马可站在那儿，一时没有说话。
因为这个办法他一年前学过。
是常玉山教的。
去年十一月十七日，敦煌那间屋子里。
你先发两百，自己留二十，一天吃一袋。
这句话他转给了蒋姐。
蒋姐把它变成了群里那一行「我先吃了二十天」。
今天郭老师把它用在了别人的货上。
同一个法子，一年里传了三道。
蒋姐说：
“行。我买。”
她掏出手机，当场下了一单。
下完她说：
“买两袋。”
马可问：
“为什么两袋？”
蒋姐说：
“一袋我吃。”
她把手机收起来。
她说：
“一袋给郭老师。”
她说：
“两个地方。”
这四个字说完，马可看了她一眼。
蒋姐说：
“你去年冬天不就是这么干的吗。”
那天晚上，马可回去以后做了一件事。
他没有改那七行。
他做的是另外一件。
他把阿里木从七月二十号到今天的每一条回音，全都翻出来了。
一共八条。
他一条一条抄在纸上：
七月二十日：房子空着。
七月三十日：洞补了十一个。第九座，东头那面。东头风大，洞口磨得快。
八月十日：今天量了糖度。
八月二十日：第二座第三座今天挂完。第九座明天。
八月三十日：第九座比前两座干得快，三天。
九月十日：昨天有风，第九座关了半边，今天早上开了。
九月二十日：开始下架。第二座。
九月三十日：第九座下完。东头那一排颜色浅一点，我爸说浅是好的。
马可把这八条看了三遍。
这八条里没有一句好听的。
没有一句形容词。
「洞口磨得快」这五个字，不像卖东西的话。
「我爸说浅是好的」这七个字，更不像。
马可在纸上写了一行：
「这八条，抄的人不会抄。」
他停了一下，写完：
「因为抄了也不好看。」
那天晚上十一点，他给蒋姐发了一条。
他写的是：
「蒋姐，三月那一批，七行字我不改。」
下面一条：
「可是我想在袋子里多放一张纸。」
蒋姐问：
「放什么？」
马可把那八条拍了照发过去。
发完他打了一句：
「这是那三座房今年每十天一句，一共八句。」
下面一条：
「原样印，一个字不改。」
蒋姐过了大概十分钟才回。
她回的是：
「这个太碎了。」
马可打了一句：
「碎才对。」
这三个字发出去，马可自己又补了一段。
他打的是：
「蒋姐，我今天想明白一件事。」
下面一条：
「那七行，谁都能写。」
再一条：
「因为那七行是我把常师傅的话排了个顺序。」
又一条：
「这八句不一样。这八句是有人在那儿，每十天说一句。」
最后一条：
「他不在那儿，就没有第九句。」
蒋姐这一次回得比刚才快。
她回的是：
「那你明年怎么办。」
马可打了个问号。
蒋姐说：
「明年他也会每十天发一句。」
下面一条：
「编也编得出来。」
马可看着这两条，在屏幕前面坐了一分多钟。
因为她说得对。
这八句里，没有一句是不能编的。
「洞补了十一个」，可以编。
「东头风大，洞口磨得快」，也可以编。
编的人只要有耐心，一年编三十六句，不难。
马可打了一句：
「您说得对。」
下面一条：
「可是有一样他编不了。」
蒋姐问：
「哪一样。」
马可打了很久，最后发出去的是两行：
「编的人只能编他猜得到的。」
「编不出「我爸说浅是好的」这一句。」
这一条发出去，蒋姐过了一会儿回了三个字：
「这句好。」
又一条：
「这句我会发。」
这一条发出去，那边又静了很久。
过了二十多分钟，蒋姐回了一句：
「马老师，我问你一件事。」
马可打了个「您说」。
蒋姐回的是：
「明年三月，我们那个一年就到了。」
下面一条：
「你打算怎么谈。」
马可看着这两条，坐在桌前没有动。
因为他把这件事忘了。
去年十一月二十一日，白杨林，曹议金说的那句。
三月，成都只有她。三月，她只发我的干货。就一年。明年三月重新谈。
明年三月。
还有五个月。
他正要打字，那边又来了一条。
这一条只有一行，马可看完把手机扣在桌上：
「我先跟你说清楚：那个二十二块的，找过我了。」
马可拿起手机，打了一句：
「找您做什么。」
蒋姐回得很快：
「问我要不要做他的。」
下面一条：
「说给我两成五。」
马可算了一下。
二十二块，两成五，一袋五块五。
他给的是二十六块两成，一袋五块二。
每袋多三毛。
他打了一句：
「您怎么答的。」
蒋姐回：
「我说三月我发不了。」
下面一条：
「我跟你有一年的。」
再下面一条：
「他问我几月到期。」
马可看着这一行，坐直了。
蒋姐的下一条来得很快：
「我没说。」
又一条：
「可是他会算。三月发的，一年就是到三月。」
马可打了一句，打完他自己觉得这句问得笨，可是他还是发了：
「蒋姐，您跟我说这个，是想让我涨佣金吗。」
这一条发出去，那边过了大概三分钟。
回来的是一句：
「不是。」
下面一条：
「我跟你说这个，是因为你去年跟我说过一句话。」
马可打了个问号。
蒋姐回的是：
「你说，货没到，你自己在群里说。」
再下面一条，马可看完，把手机放在桌上，在屋里站了很久：
「那句是你自己加上去的。所以这一条我也得跟你说。」

附录一·Dongpo's Note
Ten twenty, a screenshot from Jiang with no message. Twenty seconds later: have a look at this.
A forwarded product listing from some other group. The photograph at the top is a drying house — mud brick, latticed, light coming through the holes onto rank on rank of bunches. It is a better photograph than any of mine. Below it, seven lines.
I read to the third and sat up, and when I had read all seven I put the phone down and walked round the room twice, and then copied them out by hand.
Xinjiang, Turpan. Yusup. The seventh drying house. Hung end of August 2028, forty-five days. No sun gets in, only wind; sun turns them brown. Four and a half jin fresh to one jin dry. Seedless white. He has twelve houses and this batch is number seven; east end and west end differ by two grades; this batch is the east end. Master Yusup is fifty-eight this year. His father built the twelve houses.
Not one line different, except the name, the count and the age.
Eleven o'clock, one question to Alim: what date did Turpan hang this year? — 12 August. And: hot year, half a month early.
Dunhuang hung on 5 August. Turpan on the twelfth. Neither place hung at the end of August this year, and the seven lines say the end of August. He copied last year's calendar because he has never asked about this one. And the part that stopped me: if I were not receiving one line every ten days, I would not know it was the twelfth either.
Three courses. Post in the groups saying the seven lines are copied — dropped in ten minutes, because I cannot prove it, and because not one of those seven sentences is mine. Four and a half to one is Chang's. No sun is Chang's. Two grades between the ends is Chang's. All I did was put them in an order. Say instead that mine are genuine and I have travel sheets and ten-day notes — dropped in half an hour, because claiming to be true is accusing him of being false, and all I hold is a date, and of eight thousand nine hundred people, how many know what the twelfth of August means?
The third course I did not have.
Han Fei was at the table at two with both sheets in front of him — mine from March, his from today. Which of these two is the better looking? His. Han Fei.
The Chu man with a pearl to sell in Zheng, and a casket of magnolia wood, perfumed with cassia and pepper, strung with pearls and jade, set with rose-stone, bound at the edges with kingfisher. That cost a good deal. More than the pearl. The Zheng man bought the casket and gave the pearl back. I laughed; he did not. You are laughing at the man from Zheng. Yes. Most people do.
And then, flat on the table: the casket was made by the man from Chu himself.
The Zheng man did not cheat him. The Zheng man selected exactly as he had been taught to select. All that work on the casket is a statement that the good thing is the casket, and: the buyer learned it.
Seven lines, nine numbers, no adjectives, six drafts, a year of work from the night Chang struck out nine of my fourteen. You made those seven lines well. Well enough to be copied without a word changed.
He heard my two dead options and said you were right to kill them, and then: first, something you have not thought of. He has seen the six lines you posted in July.
The cost roll. One bag 26. Fruit 7.50. Bag 1.35. Freight 1.20. Group leader 5.20. The remaining 10.75 is mine.
From those six lines he knows two things. One: my goods cost fifteen a jin at origin. Two: of my twenty-six, I take ten seventy-five. So he prices at twenty-two. At twenty-two he still has six seventy-five. And: those six lines are the instruction manual you wrote for him.
Should I not have posted it? You should have posted it. Instantly. Without it they compute forty-three times. With it they compute three and a half. You did that arithmetic in July. Yes. When you posted it you costed the buyer. You did not cost the seller. And: the same sheet — to a buyer it reads as honesty; to a seller it reads as your price list.
Two roads now. One is to make the seven lines better. He copies them anyway. Yes. And the better you make them, the less work he has to do. You are editing his draft for him. The other? Take the pearl out. What is the pearl? — A copier copies what looks good. And: what does not look good, he does not copy. — M.
附录二·Marco's Memo
Memo to file. Chengdu, 9 October 2028.
1. The copy. Seven lines, my structure exactly, three fields substituted (name, house count, age). Photography materially better than mine. Retail ¥22 against my ¥26.
2. The one falsifiable element, and it is only falsifiable to me. The copy states hung end of August 2028. Actual 2028: Dunhuang 5 August, Turpan 12 August — both roughly a fortnight early on an exceptionally hot July, the earliest in thirty-five years at Chang's. He has reproduced a typical year's calendar. He has not asked anyone about this year. And the uncomfortable half: I know the twelfth of August only because of the ten-day note. Without that column (Abdul Rahman's addition, ch.148, which I did not ask for) I would have nothing at all.
3. Why I cannot use it. The tell is real and unusable: proving it requires the audience to know what a hanging date implies, and nothing in my seven lines has taught them that. A detail that discriminates only for the informed does not discriminate. And the deeper obstacle: I did not write any of those sentences. 4.5:1, no sun, the two-grade east/west spread — all Chang's, all volunteered by him, all true of his houses and plausibly true of anyone's. What I contributed was an ordering. An ordering is exactly the part that copies cleanly.
4. Han Fei's reading of the casket story, which is not the one it is usually told for. — The casket was made by the seller. The buyer did not defraud him; the buyer selected according to the instruction he had been given, and the instruction was the workmanship. — Therefore: the better the container, the cheaper the contents become, because attention is finite and the container has been made the thing worth attending to. — And: improving my seven lines now is editing his draft for him.
5. The cost roll, which is the actual mechanism and which I published myself. Posted July 2028, six lines, including origin price 15/jin and my own margin 10.75/bag. From those two figures a competitor obtains my entire cost structure and can price precisely underneath it: ¥22 leaves him ¥6.75, which is a viable margin against a supplier he has not had to develop. I gave him the price list. And Han Fei's ruling on whether it was a mistake: no. Undisclosed, buyers compute 43× (grape at 1.20 a jin in the field against 52 a jin retail; the 4.5:1 conversion is invisible to them). Disclosed, they compute 3.5×. That trade was correct and I would make it again. The error was not the disclosure. It was that I costed one audience. The same sheet reads as honesty to a buyer and as a tariff schedule to a competitor, and I ran the numbers only for the first. Standing rule: before publishing anything, run it twice — once for the party you are addressing and once for the party you are not.
6. The answer, and it is the only asset here that has the right property. Not better lines. Publish the ten-day notes verbatim, unedited, ugly. Eight of them exist for 2028: — 20 Jul: 房子空着. / 30 Jul: 洞补了十一个。第九座，东头那面。东头风大，洞口磨得快。 / 10 Aug: 今天量了糖度。 / 20 Aug: 第二座第三座今天挂完。第九座明天。 / 30 Aug: 第九座比前两座干得快，三天。 / 10 Sep: 昨天有风，第九座关了半边，今天早上开了。 / 20 Sep: 开始下架。第二座。 / 30 Sep: 第九座下完。东头那一排颜色浅一点，我爸说浅是好的。 Not one adjective. Not one attractive sentence. "The mouths of the holes wear faster" is not a thing a seller says. "My father says pale is good" is less so. A copier copies what looks good. What does not look good, he does not copy — and cannot manufacture, because manufacturing it requires somebody standing in a building on the thirtieth of every month. Decision: the seven lines stay unchanged; a second slip goes into the bag carrying all ten-day notes for that batch's season, printed as written.
7. Jiang's question, which was the right one and which I answered badly. Yours is four yuan dearer. Dearer in what? The honest answer: three people in Turpan changed how they work this year — a recorder, a bagger, a stacker. Her reply: I can't post that. And: if I post it they'll ask what's different about the bag I bought, and I can't answer. She is correct and I have no answer yet. What I have built is a process guarantee, and process is not a consumer benefit until something goes wrong.
8. Guo's proposal, and note where it came from. Buy one of his and eat one a day for twenty days. Which is Chang's protocol (ch.129), passed by me to Jiang (ch.134), converted by Jiang into a public warranty, and now turned by Guo onto a competitor's product. Three hands in one year, and the third use was not mine. Jiang bought two — one for me, one for Guo. Two locations. And, when I looked at her: that's what you did last winter, isn't it. Result due 29 October.
9. And the two things at eleven o'clock. (a) The March exclusivity expires and I had forgotten it. One month, one category, one year, renegotiated next March (ch.133). Five months. (b) The man selling at twenty-two has approached her.
附录三·English Highlight
"The man of Zheng bought the casket and gave back the pearl. This may be called a good selling of caskets; it cannot be called a good selling of pearls."
The story is usually told against the buyer, and the buyer is usually the one people laugh at. Most people do, said the man who wrote it down, and then put his hand flat on the table.
The casket was made by the man from Chu himself.
Magnolia wood, perfumed with cassia and pepper, strung with pearls and jade, set with rose-stone, edged with kingfisher feather — and it cost more than what it contained. The buyer did not cheat him. The buyer selected exactly as he had been taught to select. All that labour on the casket is a statement that the good thing is the casket, and the buyer learned it.
The modern casket was seven lines of copy on a bag of raisins: origin, the number of the drying house, the hanging date, forty-five days, no sun, four and a half jin of fresh fruit to one dry, the varietal, the two-grade difference between the ends of the building, and the age of the man who makes it. Nine numbers and no adjectives, six drafts, a year's work.
It reappeared in October under another name, another house number, another age, and four yuan cheaper — word for word otherwise, and with a better photograph.
There was exactly one falsifiable thing in it. It said the fruit was hung at the end of August, which is when fruit is hung in a normal year. In that particular year the heat came early and the two producers who actually hang fruit hung it on the fifth and the twelfth. The copier had reproduced a typical calendar because he had never asked anyone about this one — and the man who noticed knew the true date only because somebody three thousand kilometres away had been sending him one line every ten days.
Which is unusable as an accusation, and useful as a diagnosis. What copies cleanly is the part that was made to look good. The instruction, when it came, was not to make the seven lines better: the better you make them, the less work he has to do; you are editing his draft for him.
Take the pearl out. And what is the pearl?
A copier copies what looks good. What does not look good, he does not copy.
The eight sentences that went into the bag instead had been written by a thirty-one-year-old in a courtyard on the twentieth and thirtieth of each month, and included: patched eleven of the holes; house nine, the east face; more wind at the east end, the mouths wear faster. And: the east row came out a little paler. My father says pale is good.
