English Mirror: One hundred and thirty chapters, five hundred and twenty-six thousand five hundred characters, this is the Grand Historian's book — set down to gather up what was lost and supplement the arts, and to make of it the words of one man. — The reason I have endured and lived on, and have not refused to be buried in filth, is that there is something in my own heart not yet finished, and I could not bear to die obscure with nothing of my writing shown to later ages.
Dongpo's Note
Not like November. Then it was white cloth, shawms, and forty-one people bringing money to a table. Today an empty dirt lane with sunflowers on both sides, all of them hanging their heads.
The gate was on the latch. A woman of middle age, his daughter-in-law, pulled it open and pointed inside. He's on the kang.
It is darker in than out. The kang is under the window and it is lit, in August, because the old are cold. He is thinner than last year; last year he sat behind that little table with his back straight and today his shoulders have gone down, and the reading glasses hang on his chest. He looked at me for two or three seconds. The one from Chengdu. You remember me. You stood next to me for a whole morning. And, pointing at the edge of the kang: sit.
The book started in 2009. Before that, a teacher at the village school, surname Wu, kept it for a dozen years, then retired to town and nobody took it on. Why not? No money in it. Said entirely without complaint: a whole day from first light to dark and not one fen.
Why he took it on. Winter 2009, his son married; there was nobody keeping the book; his wife sat at the gate and took the money and put it in the box, and who gave how much was in whose mouth. Did something go wrong? Three households were missed. Meaning? Three families gave and we didn't know it. The day was chaotic. And afterwards? A pause: afterwards they had occasions and we didn't go.
Did they say anything? Nothing. Then how did he learn of it? 2012. An old woman in one of those houses was dying and let something slip: in 'oh-nine I gave his family two hundred. — I knew straight away it was bad.
He took six hundred, two hundred to each of the three houses, and delivered it. Was it accepted? It was. And: but the way we talked was different after. And then: the money you can put back. Those three years you can't.
Sima Qian was in the west room at noon while the old man slept and his daughter-in-law made me a bowl of noodles. On the table: a tin box, a pen, a pair of reading glasses, and the red-covered book, which I had not touched. Fifty-odd, dark official's dress gone old at the cuffs, a face with the pallor of someone long out of the light, and something not quite comfortable in how he sat down. You haven't opened that one. The owner is asleep. Sima Qian.
I began carefully and he cut it short. Li Ling. Second year of Tianhan; five thousand infantry out beyond the passes; eighty thousand cavalry; eight days of fighting; the arrows gone; a surrender. The news came back and the whole court cursed him. And you said? I said he wasn't that kind of man. Were you close? I didn't know him. We had stood in the same court. Never drunk together once. Then why speak? The emperor asked me. So I said it.
The rest in single sentences. Prison. Sentenced to death. Death could be bought off and I hadn't the money. There was one other road that was not death. And then he stopped, and I did not ask. After a while, himself: a man who has had that done to him was supposed to die. That is what people thought then. I did not die. Why not? The book wasn't finished.
One hundred and thirty chapters. The last one is me. The Grand Historian's own preface: where his family came from, what his father did, what he did, how the hundred and thirty came to be. Why write yourself? Because nobody else will. Said without any self-pity. I wrote biographies for a hundred and twenty-nine people. Not one of those hundred and twenty-nine is mine.
Was that chapter hard? Hard. How? The hard part isn't writing what I did. The hard part is writing why I am still alive. A man who had suffered that and had not died — if I don't set that down plainly, later people will invent a reason for me.
What did you fear they would invent? Something that sounds well. And: something that sounds well makes me a man who bore disgrace for a great purpose. I was not that. I was afraid to die, and afraid the book would not be finished. The two together kept me alive. And: that doesn't sound well. But it is true.
Standing to go, he looked at the red book. There is one page you should see. 2016. And: wait until he wakes and let him turn to it himself. And from the door: don't turn to it yourself. — M.
Marco's Memo
Memo to file. Dunhuang village, 6 August 2028.
1. Provenance of the gift ledger, which I did not have. A village-school teacher kept it for a dozen years to 2009, then retired to town. Nobody succeeded him, because it is unpaid — "a whole day, first light to dark, not one fen." The gap lasted one occasion. His own son's wedding, winter 2009, with the money taken at the gate and no book: three households gave and were not recorded. Consequence: those three families later had occasions and his family did not attend, because his family did not know it owed. Nobody said anything. He discovered it in 2012 by an accidental remark from a dying woman. He delivered ¥200 to each of the three. It was accepted. But the way we talked was different after. And: the money you can put back. Those three years you can't. The sixteen-year ledger exists because of one occasion at which there was no ledger.
2. And note the exact failure. Not theft, not dispute, not ill will. Three entries were not written down on a busy day, and three relationships in a village of eighty-seven households ended, silently, for three years — and would have ended permanently but for a deathbed slip. This is ch.131's mechanism running in reverse. There, the ledger made each household's position common knowledge and compliance was total with no penalty. Here, one absence of record produced a default by a household that fully intended to perform. The ledger is not a control on the unwilling. It is the only thing standing between the willing and an accidental breach.
3. Sima Qian on writing one's own entry. 130 chapters, of which the last is himself; 129 biographies, not one of them his. Why write it? Because nobody else will. And the difficulty, which is not the one I expected: the hard part isn't writing what I did; it is writing why I am still alive — a man who had been punished as he was and had not taken his own life. Why it had to be written: if I don't set it down plainly, later people will invent a reason for me. And what he feared they would invent: something that sounds well. Something that sounds well makes me a man who bore disgrace for a great purpose. I was not that. I was afraid to die, and afraid the book would not be finished. That doesn't sound well. But it is true. File beside ch.137 (mark what you have not tested) and ch.147 (print your ignorance on the bag). This is the same rule applied to a motive rather than a measurement: state the unflattering true reason, because the vacancy will otherwise be filled by a flattering false one.
4. The 2016 page. 11 March 2016, his wife's funeral, kept in his own hand at his own event — because there was nobody else. Eighty-four lines against a village of eighty-seven households. Below the eighty-four, in smaller and fainter characters, added later that night: three names, and two characters. Did not come. The three are the three households of 2009. No demand, no reproach, no explanation. The identical form as the 未還 in a ninth-century lending register in Cave Seventeen (ch.130), written by a man who has never heard of it, at his own wife's funeral, alone in the house after everyone had gone. Asked why he wrote it: if I don't write it, it isn't there.
5. And the structural fact he stated without any weight on it at all. That page has eighty-four lines, one annotation, and no line for his own household — because the book records what each house gives to the house holding the event, and the host does not give to himself. The house that keeps the book is always the blank one. And: the year Teacher Wu had his occasion, his was blank too. Which is Qin's thirty-four notebooks (not one of those customers is mine, ch.152), and Luo's two thousand seven hundred deals, and Tang's door, and Xiao Lei's groups. Fifth instance in ten months. But this one is different in kind and I want to be precise about how: the others hold no equity in what they enable. He holds no line in the record he keeps — and the record is the thing that makes the whole village's obligations legible. The registrar is the one entity the register cannot describe.
6. His question, which I could not answer. Who keeps this after I'm gone? There is a candidate: a man of twenty-nine who works in the county town. He has been asked. He says he can't remember who's who — which is, to the word, Qin's problem three days ago (aliases only the writer can resolve, ch.152). And the old man's proposed fix, which is correct and which fails: you don't have to remember. Just write full names. The reply: writing full names looks distant.
7. And that is the real problem, stated better than I could state it. The shorthand that makes a sixteen-year ledger unreadable by anyone but its author — old Zhang, the one at the north end — is the same property that makes it a village ledger and not a bank statement. Full names are transferable and cold. Nicknames are warm and die with the writer. Every record of this kind is written in a code whose warmth is its untransferability. I do not have an answer. I want to note that my instinct — standardise the names — is the instinct of the software man who offered Qin a hundred yuan a book (ch.151) and never asked what was written in them. The thing I would fix is the thing that makes it work.
8. Condition. In hospital in April; home since; still keeping the book. Thinner, shoulders down, mind entirely intact — he turned to a page from 2016 without going through the book to find it.
English Highlight
"I wrote biographies for a hundred and twenty-nine people. Not one of those hundred and twenty-nine is mine."
The hundred and thirtieth chapter of the book is its author, and asked why he had put himself into a history of everybody else, he did not reach for anything elevated. Because nobody else will.
The difficulty was not the one an outsider would guess. The hard part isn't writing what I did. The hard part is writing why I am still alive. He had spoken up for a general who surrendered after eight days and the exhaustion of his arrows; he had not known the man and had never drunk with him, and had spoken because he was asked; and he had been imprisoned, sentenced, unable to buy the sentence off, and had taken the one road that was not death — after which, by the understanding of the time, he was expected to kill himself.
If I don't set that down plainly, later people will invent a reason for me. And what he feared they would invent was something that sounds well — a man bearing disgrace for a great purpose. I was not that. I was afraid to die, and afraid the book would not be finished. The two together kept me alive. And: that does not sound well. But it is true.
Sixteen hundred years later and four thousand kilometres away, an old man on a heated brick bed in a village outside Dunhuang, thinner than he was and with his shoulders gone down, turned without searching to a page dated 11 March 2016.
It is his own wife's funeral, kept in his own hand, at his own house, because there was nobody else to keep it. Eighty-four lines of names and sums, in a village of eighty-seven households.
Below them, in smaller and fainter characters added later that night when everyone had gone, three names and two characters: 未至 — did not come. No demand and no reproach. It is the same form, to the character, as an entry in a ninth-century monastery lending register — 未還, not returned — written by a man who has never heard of it.
Asked why he had bothered: if I don't write it, it isn't there.
And there is one more property of that page which he stated without any weight on it at all. Eighty-four lines, one annotation, and no line for his own household — because a gift ledger records what each house gives to the house holding the occasion, and the house holding the occasion gives nothing.
The family that keeps the book is always the blank one.
