English Mirror: Of every case I have examined I keep a record. The reason I distinguish them thus: my master's method had only just been completed in me when he died, and so I set down in a register what I had diagnosed, fixing in advance whether the patient would live or die, and afterwards reviewed both my failures and my successes against the pulse method. That is why I still know it today.

Dongpo's Note

Nine months ago it was November and there were apricots drying on mats in this yard. Today the yard is empty and all six doors stand open. He was inside house one.

Last year the racks were bare, nails and nothing on them. Today they are full — bunch on bunch, green, floor to roof, layer over layer, with the light coming in through several hundred holes and falling across them, and every bunch moving very slightly, because the wind never stops.

He came round the end of a rack with green juice on his hands. Twenty days early. What is? The hanging. Wiping his hands on the cloth at his waist: usually the twenty-fifth or sixth of August. This year the fifth. Why? Hot year. Half of July was over forty every day. And then, which had me putting the bag down for the notebook: thirty-five years, and this is the earliest.

The arithmetic. Usual: hang 25 Aug, forty-five days, out 10 Oct; despatch 10 March; five months. This year: hang 5 Aug, out 20 Sept; five months and twenty days. The line is at six. Still inside, with ten days of margin left.

*Is early-hung fruit the same as late? No. How does it differ? Sugar. Meaning? He worked out how to say it. The heat comes early, the sugar comes up fast, but it doesn't come up full. Which is? Sweet enough. A pause. But thinly sweet.

At three he fetched the notebook from a wooden chest in the inner room; the chest has a lock and the lock was not fastened. An old-style ledger, vertical ruling, paper yellowed to the point of crumbling, nothing on the cover. First page, top right: year guiwei, seventh month — August 2003. Below it, columns of figures, two rows a day, each row with three things: the hour and two numbers. What are the two? One's the scale. One's outside. Outside? Temperature. I borrowed a thermometer that year.

I copied the whole thing into the laptop — a hundred and twenty-six days, two hundred and fifty-two rows — and plotted the weights. Flat from 28 August to 20 September, twenty-three days, barely moving. It starts climbing on the twenty-first and never comes back down.

Seven days in the book carry an extra line of small characters. In order: 3 Sept, rain, closed. 11 Sept, rain, closed. 20 Sept, rain, closed. 28 Sept, high wind. 4 Oct, house four sticky too. 11 Oct, went into town. 22 Oct, all ruined.

Chunyu Yi was at the yard table at ten, fifty-odd, a very old dark robe, a tightly rolled bundle of slips in his hand, fingers thin and nails cut short. You're matching up dates. Yes. Chunyu Yi. The Granary Master? I ran the great granary. People call me that.

The bundle stayed rolled. These are case records. Medical notes? Every illness I examined, set down one by one. How many? Twenty-five. A lifetime of practice and twenty-five? Twenty-five written down. I saw more.

*All cured? No. Flatly. Ten died. You record the deaths? The deaths especially. Then the censor in Qi with a headache: he took the pulse and told the man your illness is not a thing to speak of, and outside told the man's younger brother privately: this is a suppuration; he dies in five days. And? He died on the fifth day.

Then the thing the whole evening turned on. Notice one thing. I said it first. He stood the bundle on end. When I write a case, I write first when I think he will die. Afterwards I write when he died. Why first? If I don't write it first, I can never be wrong.

Because: the patient dies and I can say I saw it coming; the patient lives and I can say I cured him. As long as I don't write it down first, I am right both ways. And: write it first, and half the time I am wrong. How many of the twenty-five were you wrong about? Six or seven. And those are on the slips too? They are. And: the emperor later asked me how many I had treated, how many lived and died, and their names. I answered out of this. And: if I had only recorded the ones I cured, I could not have answered that day.

At eleven I turned the screen round. He put his reading glasses on. Flat for twenty-three days, climbing from the twenty-first. You told me three rains that August. September. Yes — the third, the eleventh, the twentieth. On the third the line does not move. On the eleventh it does not move. It starts climbing on the twenty-first, the day after the third rain.

How many days did you keep them shut the first two times? One. And the third? A long pause. Three.

Rain on the afternoon of the twentieth; he shut all six houses; on the twenty-first he went to Jiuquan, because his mother was in hospital; he came back on the twenty-third and opened them.

That year wasn't the rain. He took the glasses off and held them and looked at the table, and after half a minute: it was the sweating. — M.

Marco's Memo

Memo to file. Dunhuang, 5–6 August 2028.

1. Season, and it moves the plan. Hung 5 August, twenty days earlier than usual and the earliest in thirty-five years (half of July above 40°C). Out ~20 Sept instead of ~10 Oct. Age at 10 March despatch: 5 months 20 days against 5 months. Margin against the six-month line falls from ~1 month to ~10 days. And a quality note I did not have a word for until he supplied one: early heat raises sugar fast but not fullysweet enough, but thinly sweet. Which is precisely the property my twenty-day gravimetric protocol cannot see (ch.147: the instrument measures the wrong thing for aroma, and now also for structure).

2. The 2003 series, transcribed: 126 days, 252 rows, weight and ambient temperature twice daily. Plotted: flat 28 Aug – 20 Sept; monotonic rise from 21 Sept; never recovers. Seven annotated days: three rains (3, 11, 20 Sept), a high wind, "house four sticky too," "went into town," "all ruined."

3. The finding. Rains one and two: closed one day each, no movement in the series. Rain three: closed three days — he shut all six houses on the afternoon of the 20th, left for Jiuquan on the 21st because his mother was in hospital, and reopened on the 23rd. The rise begins on the 21st. It was not the rain. It was the duration of the closure.

4. And the consequence, which is why this matters and not merely why it is sad. For twenty-five years his rule in a long rain has been shut for as long as it rains — three days of rain, three days shut; five days, five. The rule he adopted to prevent 2003 is the thing that caused 2003. He said it himself before I could: for twenty-five years I've been afraid of rain, and what I've been doing all along is the thing that happened in '03. This is the exact failure mode Chunyu Yi's method exists to prevent: a wrong diagnosis produces a treatment that reproduces the disease, and nothing in twenty-five years of correct measurement can detect it, because the measurements were never set against a stated prediction.

5. Chunyu Yi's rule, and it is the most portable thing anyone has given me since Jia Sixie. — Twenty-five recorded cases, ten of them deaths, six or seven of them wrong predictions, all retained. The prediction is written before the outcome. Name, pulse, diagnosis, and the day he expects the patient to die — then, afterwards, what happened. If I don't write it first, I can never be wrong. The patient dies and I foresaw it; the patient lives and I cured him. As long as nothing is written first, both outcomes confirm me. — And the payoff, which is not epistemic but practical: when the emperor demanded an account of every patient by name and outcome, he could answer, because he had kept the failures. A register of successes would have been unanswerable.

6. Restating what Chang's 2003 book actually is. A hundred and twenty-six days of honest, twice-daily, correctly-taken measurement, containing not one claim. Therefore it has never overturned anything in twenty-five years. It sat in a chest proving only that something went wrong that year. A ledger of numbers alone is a ledger that cannot be wrong. A ledger that cannot be wrong cannot be right either. Note against my own notebook: 180 pages, and I should audit how many entries in it are predictions. I suspect very few. The ones that were — Chang's 50% repeat rate, scored at 51.5% (ch.140) — are the only entries that have ever taught me anything about the person who made them.

7. What he does not know, and what I do not know. The book contains closed one day → no effect and closed three days → failure. It contains nothing about two days. He recorded every closing and not one opening, because closing is an event you perform in the dark in a panic and opening is routine — and so the duration, which is the variable that matters, was never a field.

8. The trial, and his amendment to it. — I proposed: this season, in a long rain, do not close all six. Close four on the old rule; leave two open, and reopen the moment there is a break. — Exposure: 2 houses × 8 t fresh = 16 t fresh ≈ 3.5 t dry ≈ ¥50,000+ at his price. He said one house, not two. Two I can't afford to gamble. One I can. Which is, word for word, the sizing rule this whole year has been about (ch.131, ch.133, ch.141) — arrived at instantly, by the person carrying the loss. And he chose house four, unprompted: house four is the one that went sticky in '03.

9. Adopted from tomorrow: he writes a prediction on the first page of this season's book. First one, made and written before I left the yard: I asked whether this year's sugar would run higher or lower than usual. 低。 Lower. Not by much. Five characters, dated, in his hand, before the fruit comes down. The first falsifiable sentence in thirty-five years of records.

10. And the number I did not intend to say out loud. Two houses' exposure came to just over fifty thousand — the same figure as the debt in the ledger with his name on it. Neither of us remarked on it. Recording it here because I noticed and said nothing, and because I think he noticed too.

"I set down in a register what I had diagnosed, fixing in advance whether the patient would live or die, and afterwards reviewed both my failures and my successes."
Twenty-five cases, which for a working physician is not many, and he was clear that it was not the whole of his practice: twenty-five written down. I saw more.
Ten of the twenty-five died. Asked whether he recorded the deaths, the answer came without any hesitation: the deaths especially.
But the deaths are not the point either, and he said so. Notice one thing. I said it first. The order of writing is the entire method: the name, the pulse, the diagnosis, and the day he expected the man to die — set down before the event — and only afterwards what actually happened.
Why first?
If I don't write it first, I can never be wrong. The patient dies and I can say I saw it coming. The patient lives and I can say I cured him. As long as nothing is written first, both outcomes confirm me. And: write it first, and half the time I am wrong. Of the twenty-five, he was wrong about six or seven, and those are in the register too — which is what made it possible, years later, to answer a sovereign who demanded to know how many patients he had treated, how many had lived, how many had died, and their names.
Set beside that, an old vertical-ruled ledger in a wooden chest in Dunhuang: a hundred and twenty-six days of weights, taken twice a day, with the outside temperature beside each one, from the year a whole house of fruit was lost. Every figure in it accurate. Not one claim in it anywhere.
The man who kept it had believed for twenty-five years that the cause was rain — three rains that September, and he remembered all three. Plotted, the weights do not move after the first rain or the second. They begin climbing the day after the third, which was the only one where the ventilation holes stayed shut for three days instead of one, because he had gone to another city to sit with his mother in hospital.
It was not the rain. It was the closure.
And the reason it matters is not that he was mistaken. It is that the rule he adopted to prevent it — shut for as long as it rains — is the thing that did it, and he has followed that rule every long rain since.
A hundred and twenty-six days of honest measurement, and it could never have told him, because nothing in it was ever a prediction. A ledger of numbers alone is a ledger that cannot be wrong. A ledger that cannot be wrong cannot be right either.
