English Mirror: Riding west I seem near the sky's edge; since leaving home I have watched the moon come round twice. Tonight I do not know where I shall sleep. The flat sand runs on and on, and there is no smoke of any house. — The cold post-station is far off, small as a dot; the frontier beacons look at one another.

Dongpo's Note

He changed his ticket to the afternoon. Seven o'clock, the pickup, three of us; Abdul Rahman driving, Luo in front, me behind. Twenty-odd kilometres southwest, the light still slanting, the gravel in long stripes. Nobody said anything the whole way. An empty car park, half past seven, not open; he went to the gatehouse, spoke Uyghur for a minute, came back and said: we can go in.

Jiaohe sits on a plateau with a river round each side, cutting the ground into a willow-leaf. You climb a ramp, and at the top I stopped, because it is not what I expected. I expected broken walls. What is there is trenches — five or six metres deep in places, with smooth earth faces on both sides, and holes and windows and doorways cut into the faces.

It took me a hundred metres to understand. The trenches are the streets. The faces are the walls. The place was not built. It was dug.

Walking the main street, with the ground above head height on both sides, the wind came through and the sound was familiar. Two seconds to place it: it is the sound inside a drying house. Both are wind passing through holes cut in earth.

I put a hand on the wall. Earth, hard, but a fingernail takes powder off it. Not one brick in the entire city.

Abdul Rahman stopped at a face with a row of small square holes. Beam sockets. There was an upper storey? Yes. Dig out below, build one course above. Why not build it all above? No timber here and no stone. He stamped. Only this.

And then it is obvious. Every cubic metre you excavate is a wall you did not have to build. Dig a street and its two walls appear. Dig a room and its four sides appear. The material never has to be carried, because it was already there. Nothing here is surplus. What was taken away and what was left are the same thing.

Cen Shen was in a small courtyard, four or five metres square, leaning on a wall with a niche cut in it — forty-odd, a Tang round-collared robe filthy to the hem, a stuffed leather satchel at his belt. I lived in this courtyard.

I said the line everybody knows. He waved it off: that was written at Luntai, not here. And: I was here two months. Doing what? Judicial officer. He slapped the satchel. Accounts.

Six years: 749 to Anxi, 754 to Beiting. Grain, fodder, horses, garrison clothing, the yield of each military farm. How many dou of rice and how many bundles of hay a garrison needs in a year — I calculated it. What is lost on the road from the interior — I reported it.

How much was lost? Depends on the route. Liangzhou to Anxi is four thousand li. One shi of rice arrives as three dou. Seventy percent. That is enormous. It gets eaten. Entirely level about it: the carters eat and the animals eat. Two months on the road, two months of eating.

Then why ship it? Because it won't grow here. So you farm the garrison land. One shi grown here is three times cheaper than one shi carried here. Which is Zhao Chongguo at Linze last November, word for word.

Six years of those accounts. Not one entry survives. Thousands of documents judged and filed. Gone. He unbuckled the satchel and it was empty. What survives is a few dozen poems.

Which did you think mattered at the time? You guess. The accounts. Of course the accounts. And: the poems were written at night. The accounts were the day's work. And: the day's work was whether several thousand men in a garrison ate. Nobody was in charge of the other thing.

And now? He thought. Still the accounts. I had not expected that. The accounts I did for six years saved people. One winter the clothing came ten days late and a dozen men froze. Twenty days late and it would have been dozens. And then: the accounts mattered. But they are not what survived.

So why keep mine, if most of it will not last? For next year. And: my documents were consulted the second year. And the third. After ten years nobody consulted them. After a hundred the paper rots. And, going: you don't keep accounts for a hundred years from now. You keep them for the man who looks at them next year. — M.

Marco's Memo

Memo to file. Jiaohe, 15 July 2028.

1. The city, as a piece of design. Built by subtraction: streets are trenches, walls are the faces left standing, rooms are voids cut into loess, and there is no brick anywhere in it. No timber and no stone within reach, and therefore no haulage at all — every cubic metre removed is a wall not built. What was taken away and what was left are the same material. Set beside ch.134 (five categories not translated — the discipline was entirely about what not to render) and ch.143 (the works that don't show). Three chapters now on the same structure: the output is what remains after removal, not what was added.

2. Cen Shen's freight arithmetic, and it is worse than anything on my route. Liangzhou to Anxi, 4,000 li: one shi despatched arrives as three dou. Seventy percent consumed in transit — by the carters and the animals, over two months. My own worst case is 0.60/jin and six points of shrink. Theirs was a 70% loss rate, and it was still worth doing, because the alternative was nothing at all. The resolution was not better logistics; it was military-farm cultivation on site, three times cheaper than carriage — Zhao Chongguo's twelve advantages at Linze, arriving from a completely different direction seven hundred years later. When freight loss exceeds some threshold, the answer stops being freight and becomes production. Note against my own case: I am at 0.41 and six points and the answer is still freight. At what number does it stop being freight? Worth knowing before I get there.

3. Six years of accounts, not one entry extant; a few dozen poems, universally known. Asked which he thought mattered at the time: of course the accounts — the poems were written at night and nobody was in charge of them, and the accounts were whether a garrison ate. Asked which he thinks mattered now: still the accounts. One winter the clothing arrived ten days late and a dozen men died; twenty days would have been dozens. The accounts mattered. They are not what survived.

4. And the operating conclusion, which is the most usable thing anyone has told me about record-keeping. Why keep records if they will not last? For next year. Consulted in year two and year three; not in year ten; and after a hundred the paper rots. You do not keep accounts for a hundred years from now. You keep them for the man who looks at them next year. Against which: Alim kept a full traceability log in 2022 and stopped because nobody looked (ch.143). Qin's thirty years of breakage records are consulted by Qin. The red gift ledger is consulted every time there is a funeral. The ones that survive are the ones with an annual reader. My travel sheet has one built in — it returns to the issuer. My cost roll does not, and I should give it one.

5. The 1977–78 sequence, assembled today by three people none of whom had all of it. March 1977: Luo senior arrives, twenty-five days on the road, gate locked, waits three days, drives home empty. Fifty days. June 1977: Rahman senior released — dated by Abdul Rahman's memory that the apricots were ripe. Spring 1978, apricot blossom (mid-to-late March): Rahman senior takes his thirteen-year-old son to Jiaohe, stands for half an hour at the temple platform, says nothing, and they go home. Never again. The fallback rendezvous marked on the map with a circled cross. One man came to the gate a year early. The other came to the fallback a year late. Both kept the appointment. Neither was there on the same day. Fifty-one years, and the whole of it is a few days of timing. Neither man did anything wrong. One had a state work unit and a deadline. The other was in detention.

6. What Luo said in the car park, and it is the correct reading: my father didn't owe him a thing. He owed him this trip. Today it's been made. An unperformable obligation, discharged by performing the one part of it that was still available fifty-one years later — going to the place. Nothing changed hands.

7. And then I produced the half, which I had decided the night before not to produce. Reason for changing my mind, insofar as I have one: Feng Xuan's question was what would matching it do, and until the car park there was no answer. There is one now. Both principals are dead, so the old tally cannot bind anybody — but the two families have just established, out loud and in front of a witness, that the transaction was real. That is Feng Xuan's precondition exactly: match first, and only then can anything be done about it.

8. Identification, and it is not sentimental. Abdul Rahman did not take it. He stepped forward, looked for five seconds, and said: that thumbprint is my father's. How can he tell? Scar on the right thumb, from splitting firewood in the seventies. One ridge is broken. There is a horizontal blank across the middle of the print. So the half I have carried since Korla is the Rahman half — the one confiscated in 1977 — and it is identifiable to one man alive by a scar he watched being made when he was a child. I am not a party to this document. I have been holding it. (Recorded 12 July: I am not the holder of the tally. I am the one keeping it for somebody.)

9. Unresolved and now urgent. How the Rahman half came to be in Korla in November, in the hand of a man who has been dead for thirteen and a half centuries, is not a question I can put to anyone in this car park. Nobody has asked me. Luo asked where it came from and accepted the answer without comment. Leave it.

"Tonight I do not know where I shall sleep. The flat sand runs on and on, and there is no smoke of any house."
The man who wrote that spent six years on the western frontier and was not a traveller. He was an administrative officer, and what he did all day was arithmetic: how many dou of grain and bundles of hay a garrison required in a year, what proportion was lost on the road, what each military farm had yielded.
The loss figure is worth repeating. Four thousand li from Liangzhou to Anxi, and one shi of rice despatched arrived as three dou. Seventy percent. Not stolen and not spoiled — eaten. The carters ate and the animals ate, for two months.
And it was still done, because the alternative was that nothing arrived at all; and the eventual answer was not better transport but growing the grain where it was needed, at a third of the cost of carrying it.
Six years of that. Not one entry survives. Thousands of documents, judged, filed, and gone. What survives is a few dozen poems written at night, which he regarded at the time as the least important thing he did, since nobody was in charge of the poems, and the accounts decided whether several thousand men ate.
Asked, now, which mattered, he did not perform humility. Still the accounts. One winter the winter clothing arrived ten days late and a dozen men froze; twenty days late would have been dozens.
The accounts mattered. They are simply not what survived.
Which raises the obvious question for anyone keeping records that will outlast neither them nor their trade: why bother.
For next year. His documents were consulted in the second year, and the third. By the tenth nobody looked at them. After a hundred the paper rots.
You do not keep accounts for a hundred years from now. You keep them for the man who looks at them next year.
A grower in Turpan kept a complete record of which house each batch came from, hung on which day, taken down on which day, in what weather, at what grade — for one season, in 2022 — and then stopped. Asked why, he said: because nobody looked at it. The notebook survived because his mother used it to level a table leg and he took it back.
