English Mirror: Let there now be a calendar of twelve qi, with no intercalary month. Take the day of Beginning of Spring as the first day of the first month of spring, and Waking of Insects as the first day of the second… simply follow the solar terms, and the year comes out complete, and there will never be any discrepancy again. — This proposal will certainly bring down astonishment, anger and abuse upon me. But some day there will be someone who makes use of what I have said.

Dongpo's Note

Luo left yesterday afternoon, the half rewrapped and back in the cloth. I'll come again next July. Next year you won't have to stand at the gate. I'm used to standing. And then he laughed, which in nine months I had not seen him do.

This morning, the storehouse at the back of the yard. Not raisins: four things, in four stacks with an aisle between. Raisin, apricot, mulberry, jujube. The apricot pile is the largest; the mulberry the smallest, black sacks with black contents. He opened one and put a handful on his palm, a glossy purple-black. This came out in June. This year? This year. Last month.

So I took the dates for all four. Mulberry: ripe end of May, picked early June, dried seven to ten days, finished mid-June. Apricot: ripe July, hung July, fifteen to twenty days, finished early August. Grape: hung end of August, forty-five days, finished mid-October. Jujube: beaten down late October, finished end of November.

Four dates: mid-June, early August, mid-October, end of November. Against the four months I need to fill: March, April, May, June. They do not line up.

Ages at despatch: raisin five months. Jujube five months. Apricot nine months. Mulberry twelve. Chang's number is six.

*Can apricot hold nine months? Yes. Mulberry a year? Yes — offhand. What we eat here is last year's. Not sticky? Not sticky. He held up the handful: sixteen millimetres of rain a year.

And the flavour? That one he did not answer straight away. He fetched a second handful from a smaller sack and held both out. This is this year's. This is last year's. Eat.

This year's: small, a fingernail across; sweet directly; sour when you chew it, and then a scent coming back, short and quite distinct. Last year's: the same sweetness, the same sourness, and the scent simply not there. Not spoiled. That slot is empty.

*I ate one more of each, slowly. The difference is in the finish. Yes. And: a year and it doesn't go bad, but that scent has gone.

How fast? First three months, nothing. Six months, a little less. A year, half of it left. How do you know it's half? By eating it.

And then the thing that closed the other half of the day before yesterday's lesson. His three Urumqi buyers come four times a year and each time take whatever has just come out — June mulberry, August apricot, October grape, November jujube. Their four trips follow production. My four months follow the hole in Chengdu. The two calendars are six months apart.

Shen Kuo was in the doorway at ten, fifty-odd, plain Song day clothes, holding a thin bamboo tube of the sort used for measuring. Those two calendars of yours don't line up.

*His own, fast, more like accounting than explanation. The old calendar counts months; a lunation is twenty-nine and a bit days; twelve of them is three hundred and fifty-four against a year of three hundred and sixty-five and a quarter. Eleven days out. So an intercalary month every two or three years. That fixes the year and lets the solar terms drift. By how much? Some years Beginning of Spring falls in the first month, some years in the second. Half a month. And: a calendar is no use to a man farming. What does he use? The solar terms. Sow at Waking of Insects, transplant at Clear and Bright. And: the calendar is written in months; the ground answers to qi.

So his proposal: abolish months. Beginning of Spring is the first of the first; Waking of Insects the first of the second; twelve qi, twelve months, long months thirty-one days, short thirty, and never an intercalation again. Which is the solar calendar. I said so. I don't know about the West. I know mine works.

Was it adopted? No. No self-pity in it at all. Why not? Because too much would have had to change — sacrifice days, court days, days of avoidance, all fixed by the month. Changing a calendar doesn't move the sky. It moves those days.

Then why write it? Without raising his voice at all: I knew I'd be abused for it when I wrote it. I put that in the book too. And he quoted himself: this proposal will certainly bring astonishment, anger and abuse down on me — but some day there will be someone who makes use of what I have said.

And if there never is? Then there isn't. Flat. I didn't know when I wrote it whether there would be. And, from the door: I knew one thing. Don't write it and there certainly won't be. — M.

Marco's Memo

Memo to file. Turpan, 16 July 2028.

1. The four products and their production calendar. Mulberry finished mid-June / apricot early August / grape mid-October / jujube end November. Against required despatch months March–June, product age at despatch: raisin 5 months, jujube 5, apricot 9, mulberry 12. Chang's ambient guidance is six.

2. The constraint is not spoilage. It is aroma. At 16 mm annual rainfall, none of it takes up damp; a year-old mulberry is not sticky and not spoiled. What it has lost is the finish — sweetness and acidity unchanged, the volatile note simply absent. Tasted blind against this year's, side by side, and the gap is unmistakable and would be invisible in any moisture measurement I know how to run. Decay curve, by his palate: three months no loss / six months slightly less / twelve months half gone. Note the failure of my own instrumentation: twenty days of gravimetry (ch.137) would have detected nothing here. The metric I built measures the wrong thing for two of four products.

3. And why his three Urumqi buyers take one product per trip. Not variety for the customer — each trip takes whatever has just come out. June mulberry, August apricot, October grape, November jujube. Their calendar tracks production. Mine tracks a demand gap. The two run six months out of phase, and everything difficult about this follows from that one fact.

4. Three options, costed. (a) Four products, March–June, ship as available. Two of them nine and twelve months old, aroma materially reduced, undisclosed. Rejected on ch.139. (b) Two products this year (March raisin, April jujube), hold apricot and mulberry back and test them for a year. Cost: May and June empty again, 370 members lost, ¥11,100 to Jiang — and since testing then requires another cycle to act on, two empty seasons, ~¥22,000. Rejected. (c) Adopted: ship all four, and print what I do not know on the bag.

5. The label, six drafts, five lines. This bag is apricot dried last July. It is nine months old in your hand. Nine months will not spoil it. I asked the man who made it and he says it will not. But the finish fades. How much, I have not tested. So this bag is three yuan cheaper than the March batch. When you have eaten it, tell me whether it was faint. I softened line three to "the taste may vary slightly" and then put it back, on discovering that "the taste may vary slightly" is line ten of the fourteen Chang struck out last November — one of the nine that were not lies and not true, the kind written where I know nothing.

6. Chang's correction, and it is better than my design. Three yuan cheaper is a guess. You don't know how much it fades, so you don't know how much to discount. And: don't set the price. Let the people who eat it set it. Restructured: sell at the full 26; anyone who finds it faint gets 3 back on request; anyone who does not, keeps it. Worst case: 200 × 3 = ¥600. Best case: nil. — And it buys a figure I have had no way to obtain: of two hundred people, how many can taste a nine-month difference at all. This is not a refund. It is a two-hundred-person blind panel, and the money is the sample cost, which I owed anyway.

7. Shen Kuo, and why the calendar could not be adopted. Lunar months drift eleven days a year against the sun; intercalation fixes the year and lets the solar terms wander half a month; so the calendar is written in months and the ground answers to qi. His fix — twelve solar terms as twelve months, no intercalation — is the solar calendar, arrived at in the eleventh century and refused. Changing a calendar doesn't move the sky. It moves the sacrifice days and the court days and the days of avoidance — every fixed date that had been set by the month. The obstacle was never astronomy. It was the schedule of everything already agreed. Which is my own case exactly. The physics of drying is fixed. What I can move is which month I sell in, and that is fixed by commitments to Jiang. I have been trying to move the sky.

8. And the part I want to keep for the days this does not work. He wrote the proposal knowing it would be rejected, and wrote that prediction into the book itself: this will bring astonishment, anger and abuse, but some day someone will make use of what I have said. Asked what if nobody ever does: then nobody does. I didn't know when I wrote it. And: I knew one thing. Don't write it and there certainly won't be.

9. Responses to the label, and two of them changed the terms of trade. Abdul Rahman: you've put what you don't know on the bag. Thirty-five years and I've never seen it. And: whether it works I don't know — but if you write it like that, I'll keep the best of the May and June batches for you. Chang: the pricing correction above. Jiang, forty minutes: six years of group buying. Suppliers have told me eight hundred kinds of good. Not one has ever told me he didn't know. And: put those five lines out and I won't take commission on the May batch. I did not ask for either concession and would not have thought to ask. Both were volunteered in response to a disclosure of ignorance, which is the one thing I had assumed I could not afford to make.

"This proposal will certainly bring astonishment, anger and abuse down upon me. But some day there will be someone who makes use of what I have said."
The proposal was a calendar. The old one counted lunar months: twenty-nine and a half days each, twelve of them making three hundred and fifty-four against a solar year of three hundred and sixty-five and a quarter. The eleven-day gap was patched by inserting a thirteenth month every second or third year, which fixed the year and let the seasons wander — Beginning of Spring falling in the first month some years and the second in others, half a month adrift.
The calendar is written in months; the ground answers to qi. No farmer consulted it. They sowed at Waking of Insects and transplanted at Clear and Bright, and read the sun.
So: abolish months. Twelve solar terms, twelve periods, long ones of thirty-one days and short of thirty, and never an intercalation again. Which is, as it happens, the solar calendar the rest of the world uses. Told so, he was unmoved: I don't know about the West. I know mine works.
It was not adopted, and the reason had nothing to do with the sky. Sacrifice days, court days, days of avoidance — every fixed appointment in the state had been set by the month. Changing a calendar does not move the sky. It moves those days.
He knew all of this in advance, and did the one thing that makes the episode worth retelling: he wrote the prediction of his own rejection into the book, next to the proposal.
Asked what would have happened if nobody had ever taken it up: then nobody does. I didn't know when I wrote it whether they would. And then: I knew one thing. Don't write it and there certainly won't be.
A thousand years later the same problem turned up in dried fruit. Mulberries finish in June, apricots in August, grapes in October, jujubes in November; the market that needs them is empty from March to June. The two calendars run six months out of phase, and no amount of good faith closes the gap. Held a year, the fruit does not spoil and does not go sticky. What it loses is the finish — present in this year's, simply absent in last year's, and undetectable by any instrument on the premises except a mouth.
The resolution was to print the ignorance on the bag: nine months old; it will not spoil; the finish fades; how much, I have not tested. And, on the producer's advice, not to guess at the discount either — don't set the price; let the people who eat it set it.
