English Mirror: Feng Xuan had the officers summon every debtor to bring their tallies and match them. When all the tallies had been matched, he rose, and falsely invoking his lord's command, made a gift of the debts to the people, and burned the tallies; and the people cried long life. — And afterwards: what did you buy? I bought you righteousness.

Dongpo's Note

Two forty. The bundle sat two inches nearer him and he did not pick it up. Why?This isn't for me. It's your father's. It's my father's and your father's. And, hand flat on the table: they're both dead. Then, slowly: a thing like this needs two people to count.

He opened it in front of us, which he had not done in thirty years. Faded blue cloth, worn white at the edges; inside a plastic bag, added later, twenty years old by the look of it; inside that, oiled paper in three folds. He unwrapped it very lightly.

*Two things. A small yellowed sheet, and a later one with a ballpoint sketch on it: a road, some place names, and a box at the end with three characters beside it. My father drew this. Abdul Rahman looked at it for a long time. Those three characters are my father's name. And: he spelt it right.

*The old sheet is smaller than I had imagined, about the size of a palm. One edge clean, one edge crooked — and the crooked edge is not cut. It is torn. Half a thumbprint at the tear, red, very faint now. Brush characters, badly formed. I could make out one house, Zhangye, spring. And a line below with only its upper half surviving. The lower half is on the sheet that isn't here.

He looked at it for a minute without reaching for it, and then: our half is gone. When his father was taken, the house was searched. They took everything.

My palms went wet, because I know where that half is. In my bag, in the front of the notebook, since 7 November in Korla.

Then this one is no use, said Luo. No, he said. So take it back.

Feng Xuan was against the wall under the trellis at three, while Abdul Rahman took a call and Luo washed his hands — forty or so, very old clothes, very clean, a coiled cart-whip in one hand. You have half of it on you. Yes. Feng Xuan.

Should I produce it? Tell me first what for. To match it. And after it's matched? I stopped, because I have spent eight months on how to find the other half and have not once thought about what happens after. You haven't thought. Then don't produce it yet.

Then Xue. I said I knew the story: he burned the debt tallies. I burned them. But you've left out a step. Which? Before burning, match. The first thing he did on arriving was not to burn anything. It was to have the officers summon every debtor, each bringing his own half. One by one. How many matched? All of them. Not one left over.

If you were going to burn them anyway, why match? He looked at me. Now you've asked it. He came round to the table and pointed at the sheet. Burn this, and tomorrow somebody asks what debt it was, and nobody can say. And: a tally that was never matched, burned, is a tally that never existed.

What he wanted those people to remember: that I owed, and that this man let me off. And: without the matching, the first half of that sentence is gone.

Then a detail I did not know. The day I burned them, I burned them in front of everybody. Yes. You don't know which half I burned. There are two halves? There are. The people hold one, the treasury holds one. And you burned? The treasury's. And theirs? I let them take theirs home.

I stood up, because it lands immediately. So their half becomes the proof. Yes. What I burned was the half that can collect. What I left was the half that proves it happened.

Which is exactly what Luo has been carrying for thirty years. The half that proves it happened. It cannot collect: the counterparty's half is gone and so is the counterparty.

So why does Abdul Rahman send it back? Because it's his warrant. Not that this family owes a debt — that his father did the thing. And: take it home, and his father's fifty days weren't for nothing. And, going: leave it here, and it becomes this household owing him something. A man of sixty-four doesn't need that. — M.

Marco's Memo

Memo to file. Turpan, 14 July 2028, late.

1. The tally, physically. Palm-sized, yellowed. One edge clean, one torn — not cut. Half a thumbprint at the tear in faded red. Brush characters, unpractised hand; legible fragments: one house / Zhangye / spring; one line surviving only in its upper half. A second sheet, much later: a ballpoint route map drawn by Luo's father, ending in a box with Rahman senior's name written correctly beside it. The Rahman half no longer exists — the house was searched when he was taken in 1977 and everything removed.

2. And I said nothing. The matching half has been in my notebook since 7 November. I have spent eight months looking for the other half of a tally and sat two metres from it this afternoon with the third piece in my bag, and did not produce it. Reason, and it is Feng Xuan's question rather than my own courage: what would matching it do? I have no answer. Eight months on the search and not one minute on the purpose.

3. Feng Xuan at Xue: the step everybody omits. He is remembered for burning the debt tallies. What he did first was summon every debtor to bring their half and match them, one by one, until all were matched. Only then did he burn. A tally that was never matched, burned, is a tally that never existed. What the people were to remember was that I owed, and that this man let me off — and without the matching, the first half of that sentence disappears. General form, and it is the most portable thing today produced: forgiveness requires prior acknowledgement, by both sides, of what is being forgiven. A debt quietly dropped is not generosity; it is the erasure of the fact that anything happened. Which is why ch.140's ledger entry mattered: Chang asked to be recorded as owing before anything could be done about it.

4. And the detail that reframes the story: he burned the treasury's half, not the people's. The half that can enforce was destroyed. The half that proves the transaction occurred went home in the debtor's hand. Which is precisely what Luo has carried for thirty years. It cannot collect — no counterparty, no counter-half. It proves the thing happened, which is the only function still available to it. Hence Abdul Rahman returning it, and his reason as Feng Xuan gave it: take it home and his father's fifty days weren't for nothing; leave it here and it becomes this household owing him something, and a man of sixty-four doesn't need that.

5. Business, and the finding is large. Abdul Rahman on the 51.5% repeat rate: Chang is right — but you've mis-stated it. Half is the repeat rate for the same product. His three Urumqi buyers take four items a year, one per trip: raisin, apricot, mulberry, jujube. Why not ship all four at once? They say if you send everything at once, the customer picks. And: sent separately it's four occasions. Sent together it's one. Then the 51.5% was never a churn figure. It was the second-purchase rate for an identical item, which is exactly what it should be, and I read it as attrition and sized April at 200 bags because of it. Restated: March raisin, April apricot — the April buyer is not repeating, they are trying something new, and the March cohort is available in full. And the calendar closes itself: four products, four months, March to June. I have spent nine months on the empty season and the answer was in a sentence said in passing over a plate of dried apricots. I could not have heard it in November, because in November I did not yet know the repeat rate was one half.

6. What this changes, numerically and provisionally. If April–June each behave like a first offering rather than a repeat, the constraint stops being demand decay and becomes supply of four separately-traceable products — which Chang cannot provide (grape only; his apricot won't fetch a price locally and his jujube can't compete with Ruoqiang, ch.129) and Abdul Rahman can. The three-house arrangement is therefore not a second source for raisins. It is the only way to have four products. I accepted it yesterday for the wrong reason.

7. Luo, at the door at eleven. Leaving in the morning: what needed saying has been said. And then, without warning: where did your half come from?I'm not asking why you didn't produce it. I'm asking where it came from. I told him the truth, including the name, and said he wouldn't believe it. Say it. He did not laugh and did not say he disbelieved. Ten seconds, then: then keep it safe. He has known since November (ch.140: it fell out of my bag in Wuwei and he picked it up). He has said nothing for eight months, and today he watched me sit on it for two hours and did not press.

8. And the last thing, from the corridor. His father's map does not end at this courtyard. A hundred and twenty kilometres further west. Where? Jiaohe. Jiaohe has been a ruin since the fourteenth century. There is nothing there to deliver anything to.

"He had the officers summon every debtor to bring their tallies and match them. When all the tallies had been matched, he rose, and burned them; and the people cried long life."
The story survives as a story about generosity, and the generous part is the least instructive. What matters is the order of operations.
He had been sent to a fief to collect debts. The first thing he did on arriving was not to burn anything. It was to call in every debtor, each carrying his own half of the contract, and match them one by one until all the tallies had been matched. Not one left over.
Asked why, if he intended to destroy them anyway, he bothered: burn this, and tomorrow somebody asks what debt it was, and nobody can say. And: a tally that was never matched, burned, is a tally that never existed.
What he wanted remembered was a sentence with two halves — that I owed, and that this man let me off — and without the matching, the first half is gone.
There is a second detail, less often repeated, and it is the one worth carrying away. A tally has two halves: the debtor holds one, the treasury the other. He burned the treasury's half, and let the people take their own halves home.
What he destroyed was the half that can enforce. What he left in circulation was the half that proves the thing happened.
Which is what a man in Turpan had been carrying in three folds of oiled paper for thirty years: a torn palm-sized scrap with half a thumbprint on the tear, and a line of writing whose lower half is on a sheet that was confiscated in 1977 and no longer exists. It cannot collect anything. There is no counterparty and no counter-half.
Its owner's son tried to hand it over, and the other family's son pushed it back across the table, and the reason was not modesty.
Take it home, and his father's fifty days on the road were not for nothing. Leave it here, and it becomes this household owing him something — and a man of sixty-four does not need that.
