English Mirror: The lord of Xu admired Jizha's sword but did not dare say so aloud. Jizha knew it in his heart, and, being on an embassy northward, did not present it. Returning through Xu, he found the lord dead; so he unfastened his precious sword and hung it on the tree beside the grave mound, and went. His attendant said: the lord of Xu is dead; to whom are you giving it? Jizha said: not so. I had already promised it in my heart. Shall I betray my own heart because he is dead? — And: two men joining capital in trade shall each take half the profit; should there be a shortfall, each bears it likewise. If one is away east or west, the guarantor and the natural son shall answer for it.
Dongpo's Note
He finished with his father's three refusals and then stopped. Two minutes. I asked what year his father died. Ninety-eight. July. This time of year? The sixteenth of July. Today is the fourteenth. The day after tomorrow — and I understood why he comes when he comes.
His father drove a cart. Zhangye to Turpan, fifteen hundred kilometres, twenty-two days empty and twenty-five or six loaded, two round trips a year, one after the thaw and one after harvest. West he carried hides, medicinal goods, melon seeds. East he carried nothing.
Why nothing east? Nobody dared. Said as flatly as anything. In the seventies, long-distance private trading got you arrested. The westbound goods were the state's; he drove for the collective and was paid in work points. Carry anything east and it was speculation.
Autumn 1976. He unloaded and should have turned round the next day, and did not, because he met a man — Rahman — with one drying house of raisins and nowhere to sell them. Why nowhere? The purchasing station graded them off-grade. Two mao a jin. And: that house was top grade.
What they agreed: you give me the house, I'll haul it to Zhangye; there are buyers there; when it sells we split it, half each. Written down? Written. He patted the cloth bundle on his knee. This is it.
*The contract was cut in two. They fixed on the spring — his father would come again and take the goods. He came. March 1977, twenty-five days on the road. And then? The man wasn't there. The gate was locked. The neighbours said he'd been taken away. For what? Speculation.
Because of the raisins? Don't know. My father never knew either. And: he waited at the gate three days. And then? He left. Empty cart, twenty-two days home. Twenty-five out, three waiting, twenty-two back. Fifty days, empty.
And what his father said to him, once, at the end: there's a man named Rahman in Turpan; I owe him something. Asked three times what it was, and three times not told.
Jizha was on the other side of the mulberry at one, when the shade had moved east and Luo had gone to the car for water. Very tall, an old dark ceremonial robe, and nothing at his belt. The thing he has to return, he doesn't know what it is.
The sword. You want to ask what my attendant asked: the lord of Xu is dead, so who are you giving it to. Yes. He was right to ask. No grandeur about it at all: the man was dead. Who gets the sword? Then why hang it? Because I had already promised it in my heart. He had admired it on the outward embassy and had not said so aloud. How is that a promise? I saw it. And: the moment I saw it, it was promised.
*Why not simply give it then? The sword is an envoy's token. I was going further north. Without it I could not enter another court. Entirely practical. So I thought: on the way back. And on the way back? He was dead.
What became of the sword? I don't know. Nobody took it in? His family didn't dare. I was a prince of Wu; they couldn't accept a thing like that. So? Somebody passing probably took it — said without a trace of regret.
Then why hang it at all? That sword was not for the lord of Xu. It was for me.
Which is Miwnay on the platform at Dunhuang: with that paper the three years I spent here are my own three years; without it they are three years of waiting for him.
And if you hadn't hung it? Nobody would have known. He was dead. My attendant didn't know I had promised anything. And: in the whole world only I knew. So what were you afraid of? One person knowing is enough.
But Luo is different, I said: you knew what you owed. It was a sword. He knows. He doesn't. What he doesn't know is what his father owed. And: he knows what he himself owes. Which is? He owes his father an answer. And: his father said one sentence to him and then died. He accepted that sentence. Thirty years, once a year, is him accepting it.
Then why not go in? Go in and say what? I could not produce it either — walk in and tell a man of sixty-four that your father owed his father something thirty years ago and you don't know what. He'd say: there's no such thing, come and have tea. And it would be over. Over too lightly.
You've got it. What he's afraid of is not being denied. What he's afraid of is "there's no such thing." And, walking off: there was nobody there the day I hung the sword either. If the lord of Xu's son had come out and said my father never mentioned it — He did not finish. The sword could not have gone up. — M.
Marco's Memo
Memo to file. Turpan, 14 July 2028. Written at three, in the yard, after.
1. The 1976 transaction, reconstructed. Rahman senior held one drying house of top-grade raisins that the state purchasing station would take only at off-grade, two mao a jin. Luo senior, a collective carter running Zhangye–Turpan twice a year, proposed hauling it east and splitting the proceeds half and half. A contract was written and cut in two. Execution set for the following spring. March 1977: he made the twenty-five-day journey. The gate was locked; the man had been taken in for speculation. He waited three days and went home empty. Fifty days for nothing.
2. What was actually at stake, which I did not see at first. This was not a trade. In 1977 it was a crime, and the carter was proposing it to a man who had already been noticed by the purchasing station. Whether the arrest followed from the plan is unknown to everybody alive, including both sons. And that unknowability is the entire structure of the thirty years. If Luo senior had known the arrest was unrelated, there would be nothing to carry. If he had known it was related, there would be something specific to atone for. He knew neither, and so had an obligation with no content — which is the one kind that cannot be discharged.
3. Ch.130's finding, in its extreme form. A debt with a record is settled by setting the thing down; a debt without one requires a speech. Here the speech cannot even be composed, because the speaker does not know its subject. Thirty journeys of fifteen hundred kilometres, and not one crossing of a gate, for want of a first sentence.
4. And why the obvious solution is not one. Walk in and say it plainly, and the answer will be "there's no such thing — come in and have tea." Which ends it, and ends it too cheaply. What he fears is not denial. It is dismissal. Note this as a general property: an obligation the creditor does not acknowledge cannot be discharged by the debtor at all. Payment requires a receiving party who agrees that something was owed. Luo has spent thirty years unable to pay because there was nobody to pay to — until this afternoon.
5. The other half, which nobody knew existed. Abdul Rahman, in the middle of the road at two o'clock: my father told me about your father. He said: there's a carter from Zhangye who waited three days for me. One family carried "I owe him something." The other carried "somebody waited three days for me." Thirty years, each side holding half of it. He was twelve when he was told, in 1977, after his father came back. His father said it once and never again, and died in 1988. Eleven years of silence on that side too.
6. Jizha, and the part that reframes the whole thing. The sword was never delivered; the lord of Xu was dead; the family did not dare accept it; it was probably taken by a passer-by. Asked what the point was: that sword was not for the lord of Xu. It was for me. And the promise itself was never spoken by either party. He admired it and did not dare say so. I saw it, and the moment I saw it, it was promised. An obligation can be created with no words, no document, and no acknowledgement by either side, and still bind for a lifetime. Every instrument I have written this year is designed for obligations that were agreed. None of them touch this class, and this class is the one that ruins people.
7. What I said, and why. I told him: then you don't have to say anything. Just put it on the table. Which is not mine. Daozhen, on the walkway at Mogao, 18 November: he brings the wheat and sets it down; I add a stroke; done. He doesn't have to explain three years, and if he had to, he wouldn't come. He asked where I had got it. I said Dunhuang, from a monk who kept accounts. He didn't ask anything further. Eight months ago that sentence was an observation about a lending register. Today it was the only usable thing I had, and I did not invent one word of it. Recording that plainly: the useful thing I contributed to a thirty-year standoff was a quotation.
8. Abdul Rahman's move, which was better than mine and cost him more. He did not answer "go in and say what?" He turned round, walked to the gate, did not look back, and said: I'm not closing the door. He removed the requirement of a first sentence without requiring anything in return — no acknowledgement, no explanation, no acceptance. The door is a fact; entering it is not a speech.
9. And what he then asked of me. One step forward, then stopped, then: you come in with me. You go first. I have no standing in this. I have known Luo eight months and Abdul Rahman three days, and I am the youngest person on the street by twenty-four years. What I have is that I can walk through that gate without it meaning anything. Which is, I think, the position the Dunhuang contracts call the 口承人 — the party who is neither of the two principals, and whose whole function is to be present so that something can be done between them (ch.130: the half-contract has a third place on it, and someone must stand in it). I have been looking for the other half of a tally for eight months. It has been in a cloth bundle two metres from me since noon, and it has not been opened, and it is not mine.
English Highlight
"The lord of Xu is dead; to whom are you giving it? — Not so. I had already promised it in my heart. Shall I betray my own heart because he is dead?"
The story is usually told for the last line, and the last line is the least interesting part of it. What matters is everything the sword was not.
It was never asked for. The lord of Xu admired it and did not dare say so aloud. It was never promised: I saw it, and the moment I saw it, it was promised — with no word spoken by either man. It was not delivered when it might have been, and for a reason that was entirely practical, since an envoy's sword is his credential and he had further courts to enter. And when he finally hung it on the tree by the grave, the family did not dare take it in, and it was most likely carried off by somebody passing on the road.
So what was the point of hanging it?
That sword was not for the lord of Xu. It was for me.
And when it was put to him that nobody would ever have known — the recipient dead, the attendant unaware any promise had been made, in the whole world only one person knowing — the answer was: one person knowing is enough.
Which is the mildest version of the problem. The severe version was sitting under a mulberry tree in forty-four degrees on the other side of a road, holding a cloth bundle.
In 1976 a carter agreed to haul a house of raisins fifteen hundred kilometres east and split the proceeds. The contract was written and cut in half. He came back the following spring, twenty-five days on the road, and found the gate locked and his partner taken away for speculation — which is what the trade they had agreed on was, in that year. He waited three days and drove home empty.
Whether the arrest had anything to do with their arrangement, nobody then or since has known. He told his son one sentence before he died: there is a man named Rahman in Turpan; I owe him something. Asked three times what, and three times he did not say.
The son has come once a year for thirty years and has never gone through the gate, because he cannot compose the first sentence — and because the likeliest reply to it is there's no such thing, come in and have tea, which would end the matter, and end it too cheaply.
An obligation the other party will not acknowledge cannot be discharged at all. He has spent thirty years unable to pay for want of somebody to pay.
