English Mirror: Rise at dawn and sweep the courtyard, inside and out. — Every bowl of porridge, every meal of rice: remember how hard it was to come by; every half-thread of silk: remember what it cost.

Tenth of March, 2039, a Thursday, seven in the morning, Turpan. At first light a broom in the yard, even strokes. Every year on this day Alim sweeps before dawn. Two men were sweeping: Alim from the main room toward the gate, and a thin middle-aged man in a faded blue cotton gown, sleeves rolled, from the gate inward. They met in the middle; he stepped aside with a nod; Alim nodded back and went in as if nothing were strange. He swept the foot of the wall once more and smiled at me. "Zhu Yongchun, styled Zhiyi, called Bailu. Of Kunshan. A teacher. I once wrote a few lines for my household; the first is: rise at dawn and sweep the courtyard, inside and out. This family doesn't need me to teach it." We weigh the bag today. "I know. Sweep first, then weigh." In the main room the stove was lit; on a white cloth the kitchen scale, and in an open wooden box the hundred-gram brass weight Ekber gave last year. In the cupboard the row of bags, leftmost the sewn one: "2031, house three, retained." Eight years. On the shelf twenty copies of the sixth edition, covers out: first name, the six trembling characters, Abdurahman. The day the books came he had Alim lay one on his knees and stroked those six characters a long time; every morning since, he looks at the sewn bag, then the books, then pats the cupboard door with his left hand.
By nine they were all there; the old man in a clean black coat and the embroidered cap Guli bought last year. Yasen: "Uncle, who reads the scale today?" "You. One rule: the one who reads doesn't touch." "Then who touches?" "I touch. You read aloud, your mother writes." He stood with his hands clasped behind him, tight, as if they might run off on their own. Alim levelled the scale with a bubble level bought last year, turned the left foot half a turn till the bubble centred, switched on, zeroed, waited a minute: 0.0, steady. The brass weight: "One hundred point zero!" Three times. Guli wrote it down. Zhu Bailu: "Dig the well before you're thirsty." Then the sewn bag, carried level like a bowl of water, weighed in its bag as always: 95.9. Last year 95.8. Up a tenth. Weighed again: 95.9; again: 95.9; the weight: 100.0. The scale was right. Alim weighed the other bags: of six, five had gained a tenth, the double-seamed one none. "The whole cupboard met the same thing." Last year, at 95.9, Alim's first thought had been his father, not the scale; it was the scale. This year the scale was right, so what moved was the bag. His hands shook. The old man's left hand came out from under the blanket and pointed at the window: along the foot of the wall a grey strip of unmelted snow, December's, still lying in the shade after three months. Last winter not a flake, the house so dry it hurt your throat; this winter the biggest snow in years, melting all season. The bag drank a little. "It's the snow." Guli wrote: "Weight first, 100.0, three times. The scale is right. The extra tenth is the snow." Zhu Bailu: "Last year you suspected the scale first, and were right. This year you checked the scale first, found it right, believed the number, and went looking for where it came from. Right again. A moving number is nothing to fear. Fear two things: believing it without checking the scale, and not believing it after you have."
Then the old man stopped Alim putting the bag back and asked for paper: one character, slow: 吃. Eat. He tapped it, tapped the sewn bag, tapped his own chest. No one spoke; Alim went white; Guli wept; Yasen didn't understand. Only Aynur didn't cry. She knelt, held his left hand, looked at him a long time, then stood and spoke. Guli translated through tears: "When he's gone, open this bag and the family eats it together. Raisins are for eating, not for keeping on an altar." Alim: "But it's our ruler." The old man pointed to the brass weight, then to Yasen. Aynur: "The ruler is the weight. From now on sew a new bag every year, and let the boy sew it. A raisin that's kept to the end has only grown for something the day it's eaten." Zhu Bailu: "Every bowl, every meal: remember where it came from. Remembering isn't putting it on a shelf. It's knowing, as you eat, who grew it, which year's sun, which year's snow, whose hands hung it. Knowing that, you eat it and waste nothing." In the afternoon the door-frame strings were counted from both ends to the middle and divided; Aynur handed the needle to Yasen, who sewed the bag's mouth in twenty minutes of big and small stitches and wrote on it, in the Chinese he can write: "2038, house three, sewn by Yasen." Aynur added a line of Uyghur and didn't make him change it. Three raisins fell from the trimmed thread: one to the old man, one to Yasen, one to me. Yasen held his in his mouth a long time before he could bear to chew. "Sweet." "Your grandfather's string, your uncle's picking, your sewing. Of course it's sweet." At eleven, my mother: "Ticket bought. Leave the 28th, Chengdu the 29th. Your uncle will meet me; you come too. While I'm gone Teresa will turn on the porch light at four; I've told her. Forty-five years. I'm going back to look." — M.
Memo to file. Turpan, 10 March 2039. Where the tenth came from.
1. Dawn. Two men sweeping from opposite ends of the yard, meeting in the middle: Alim, and Zhu Bailu, whose household maxims begin with rising at dawn to sweep. "This family doesn't need me to teach it."
2. The ritual. Bubble level, zero, a minute's wait: 0.0, steady. Brass weight: 100.0, three times, read aloud by Yasen (the reader doesn't touch), written by Guli. "Dig the well before you're thirsty."
3. The reading. The sewn 2031 bag: 95.9. Last year 95.8. Again 95.9, again 95.9; the weight again 100.0. The scale is right.
4. Last year's inversion. In 2038 a 95.9 turned out to be the scale (a battery, an unsteady zero). This year the scale was verified, so the move was real.
5. The source. The old man pointed at the window: December's snow still lying in the shade. Last winter no snow, dry air, nothing to absorb; this winter the biggest snow in years, melting all season. The bag drank a tenth of a gram. Of the six bags in the cupboard, five gained a tenth; only the one Aynur sewed with a double seam did not: a common cause, not one bag's quirk.
6. The record. "Weight first, 100.0, three times. The scale is right. The extra tenth is the snow." Number, check, source.
7. Zhu Bailu's two fears. "Believing the number without checking the scale; and not believing it after you have."
8. The Wall Street version. A colleague burned once by a vendor's data error doubted every move for two years. In the third, something really moved, slowly, for six months; each time he said "data error again." By the time he believed it, it was too late. You calibrate in order to trust the instrument, not to distrust it forever.
9. The word. Eat. The bag, then his own chest. Aynur: "When he's gone, open it and the family eats it together. Raisins are for eating, not for an altar."
10. The ruler question. "But it's our ruler." The brass weight is the ruler now; a new retained bag every year, sewn by the boy. "A raisin kept to the end has only grown for something the day it's eaten."
11. The line. "Remembering where it came from isn't putting it on a shelf. It's knowing, as you eat, who grew it, which year's sun and snow, whose hands hung it." Yasen's first bag: big stitches, small stitches, "2038, house three, sewn by Yasen." Three loose raisins: the old man, the boy, me. "Sweet."
12. Next. My mother: leaving 28 March, Chengdu the 29th; her brother will meet her; Teresa will turn on the porch light at four. "Forty-five years. I'm going back to look."
"Every bowl of porridge, every meal of rice: remember how hard it was to come by."
Zhu Yongchun, better known as Zhu Bailu, wrote his Maxims for Managing a Household in the seventeenth century, and generations of Chinese children memorised its plain lines: rise at dawn and sweep the yard; remember where each meal came from; mend the roof before the rain. It is a manual of attention rather than of doctrine.
Measurement follows the same discipline. When a number that should be stable moves, the first question is whether the instrument is sound; that is why a careful family weighs a known brass weight before weighing anything else. But calibration cuts both ways. Once the instrument is verified, the movement is real, and the task becomes finding its cause.
Analysts often learn only half the lesson. Burned by one bad data point, they learn to doubt; then they doubt every move and miss the real change when it finally comes. The purpose of checking the scale is to be able to believe it. And remembering where something came from is not the same as preserving it forever; sometimes it means using it, knowingly, at the right time.
"Fear two things: believing the number without checking the scale, and not believing it after you have."
