the market is a voting machine in the short run, a weighing machine in the long run.

English Mirror: Water over stones, wind through bamboo, incense just rising, grasses fragrant of themselves: of the pure, open joys of this world, none surpasses this. — Those who look at it later will not only admire the painting; they will be able to imagine the people.

Twenty-third of January, 2039, a Sunday, New Year's Eve, seven in the morning, New Jersey. I got home near midnight; the porch light was still on, white; my mother sat at the kitchen table with her fifteenth book. By six she was up: cured pork boiling, a string of sausages she'd stuffed herself in December and hung a month in the garage. I gave her the paper bag with the black stump; she tipped it into her palm, took down the cookie tin: my father's things, a wooden seal cut with the character for "inspected" that he stamped for twenty-six years at the box factory, reading glasses, pay slips, a tape measure. She laid the stump beside the seal and closed the lid. "Put away." Then: bring up the notebooks; they've gone damp; I can smell it. The box under the basement stairs, each corner wrapped three times by the post office woman in Chengdu. Twenty-seven books spread on the radiator, the table, the chairs; the smell of mould and of that room in Chengdu, the smell of ten years. At the bottom, dark green, corners worn white, the elastic snapping at a touch. On the flyleaf, in my grandfather's Montblanc: the market is a voting machine in the short run, a weighing machine in the long run. The first pages all tables: footfall, conversion, repeat purchase, social-media premium. I laughed out loud: that was how I looked at a city on my first day. Then no tables; a few pages with faint warm marks like tea stains, flat, faintly warm to the touch; on the last page Du Fu's lines, folded in four. In the back pocket, two sheets of Xue Tao paper, one written, one blank with a tiny vermilion seal; and at the very bottom, something hard and cold. Green jade: 锦 on the front; on the back sixteen characters. I can't remember when I tucked it there. Cold. Then not cold. Then warm, as if just taken from someone's hand.

At 9:10 I wrote to the museum: the online catalogue listed the scroll, a Song copy, not on view, under conservation since 2028; conservator: Lin Mo. At 9:52: "The other one is with me. Ten years. One o'clock; come in by the south staff door and give my name. Lin Mo." By 1:40, in the empty Asian art conservation studio, the scroll lay under cold white light: a garden, water, rocks, bamboo, a censer, and in the middle the stout long-bearded man with the brush whom I knew at once. Beside the slope, beneath the great rock, a patch of nothing: not torn, not faded; good silk, even colour, simply empty. Lin Mo, forty-five, short hair greying at the temples, a navy apron with a polished bamboo spatula in its pocket, drew from her collar a red cord and a jade like mine: "Over my heart for ten years." She laid it by the empty patch; I laid mine beside it. From the depths of both 锦 a faint green light, like light under water, crept onto the silk and into the gap; a wind in the closed room, bamboo leaves, water over stones, a trace of burnt incense. Across the table, a tall thin man in wide Tang-style robes and a high cap, brush in hand, who first wiped his hands, then the brush, with a white kerchief, and looked at the rock until his eyes reddened. "Mi Fu, styled Yuanzhang, of Xiangyang. A writer of characters. Brother Rock is still here."

He bowed to the rock, deep and slow, his sleeves sweeping the floor. "All my life I bowed to one rock and called it brother; they called me Mad Mi. It was ugly, honestly ugly, pretending nothing. I leaned on this one in the Western Garden for nine hundred years. Ten years ago I left it, to find you. At that gathering, sixteen of us, I was the one who wrote it down. This time they needed someone to write, and Dongpo said: send one who has written to find one who will. I rose from this silk as a rainbow and went east all night, and found on a bridge a foreigner with a notebook counting how many people passed in an hour. Why him? Because he had a pen and a notebook and didn't know what to write. Those who know don't need finding." To Lin Mo: "You're the one who left my place empty for ten years." "The museum pressed me. Ten years and not on view? Copy Mi Fu from one of the other versions, they said; no one would tell. I could. My father taught me to make a fill no one can see. I didn't. A Mi Fu copied from elsewhere would be my Mi Fu, not this scroll's. Later viewers would think this scroll's Mi Fu looked like that. They'd be looking at someone I made up." He bowed to her, deeper than to the rock. "Empty is a question mark. Filled is a wrong answer. A question can still get its answer; once a wrong answer is in place, the true one can never come back." He touched the gap with his brush: green light, and beneath the rock a tall thin figure writing on the rock face. Lin Mo with her loupe: "The ink is old. The brush is this scroll's. As if he never left." She gave me her jade: "It came out of this scroll; the scroll is whole; its work is done. Take them both back to Chengdu." To whom? "You know." At 4:10 the porch light was on; my mother at the door, rice flour on her hands: "Also a Lin? One brush can't write two Lins. Come in." Cured pork, sausage, chilli-bean fish, then tangyuan at the kitchen table: "Your hands do fine work." "My father said: steady hands, quiet heart." "My mother fluffed cotton. She said: the bowstring not too slack, not too tight; watch the weather." The two jades beside the cookie tin, warm. Midnight, Guli: "Sixth edition laid out. Printing 16 February. The last page, yours, is still blank." — M.

4. The email. 9:10: a photo of the inscription to the museum, whose catalogue listed the scroll "under conservation since 2028; conservator: Lin Mo." 9:52: "The other one is with me. Ten years."

5. The gap. Under the studio light: beneath the rock, a patch of good silk, even colour, simply empty. Lin Mo's jade, worn over her heart for ten years, beside mine. Green light into the gap.

6. Mi Fu. Wiped his hands and brush before anything; bowed to the painted rock: "Brother Rock is still here." He had been the rainbow: "send one who has written to find one who will." Why me? "He had a pen and a notebook and didn't know what to write. Those who know don't need finding."

7. Lin Mo's refusal. Pressed for ten years to fill the gap from other versions, which she could do invisibly. "It would be my Mi Fu, not this scroll's. Later viewers would be looking at someone I made up."

8. The line. "Empty is a question mark. Filled is a wrong answer. A question can still get its answer; once a wrong answer is in place, the true one can never come back."

9. The return. He touched the gap and was back, writing on the rock. Lin Mo with a loupe: "The ink is old. As if he never left." Mi Fu's own words: later viewers will imagine the people. Only if the people are real.

10. The Wall Street version. A reconciliation lead with an unexplained 800,000 at month end. Everyone said: post an adjustment, plug it, close the month. She carried it as "under investigation" for fourteen months and was scolded for every one. Month fifteen, a counterparty called about a misdirected wire. Plugged, there'd have been nowhere in the books to receive it.

11. The handover. Lin Mo: "It came out of this scroll; the scroll is whole; its work is done. Take them both back to Chengdu." To whom? "You know."

12. The evening. The porch light on at 4:10. "Also a Lin? One brush can't write two Lins." Tangyuan rounder than my mother's; "steady hands, quiet heart" meeting "not too slack, not too tight, watch the weather." Two jades by the cookie tin. Guli: printing on 16 February; the last page, mine, still blank.

"Those who look at it later will not only admire the painting; they will be able to imagine the people."
Mi Fu, the Song calligrapher famous for bowing to a rock and calling it "brother," wrote the record of the Elegant Gathering in the Western Garden, where sixteen friends drank, painted and talked. His point was that a faithful picture lets later viewers imagine the actual people. The corollary is uncomfortable: an unfaithful picture lets them imagine people who never existed.
In accounting this is the problem of the plug. When accounts fail to reconcile, the easy fix is an adjustment that forces the totals to agree, so the period can close. The books then look complete, but the gap has been filled with a number no one can source, and when the real explanation eventually arrives, there is no open item to match it against.
The disciplined alternative is to carry the difference openly as "under investigation" for as long as it takes. An honest blank invites correction; a convincing forgery forecloses it. Restorers, auditors and analysts face the same temptation, and the same choice.
"Empty is a question mark. Filled is a wrong answer."
