English Mirror: Xianzhi, styled Zijing, was famous even as a boy. — When he was seven or eight and learning to write, his father Xizhi crept up behind him and tried to snatch the brush from his hand, and could not; he sighed and said: this boy will be famous one day. — Whenever I read of what moved the people of the past, it matches my own feeling like the two halves of a tally; I can never read their words without a sigh, and cannot put it into words for myself.

Tenth of October, 2038, a Sunday, eight in the morning, Tarim township, Kuqa. October cool; the apricots half yellow, leaves dropping onto the yard table and the white cloth, spread out today and not weighted. Both families seal on the same day, fixed: 10 October. Eli's family cell was done at dawn in his own yard; he and Erkin rode over on a motorbike with the bag inside his jacket. I'd arrived two days before, Fresno to Chengdu, a night upstairs at Zhong's print works, Urumqi, Kuqa. Kamil at the airport: "He takes a few spoonfuls of soup a day. He says he's waiting for you." Yiming in the bed under the open window, facing the yard table: thinner than in May, the bones of his face standing out, the eyes sunk and still bright, turning slowly; the oxygen machine humming. He moved his hand an inch toward me; I held it, lighter and colder than in May. At six Kamil had gone to the drying house alone; he didn't ask his father which string; an hour along the rows, then a middling one, the stems half browned, the press coming back at the right speed. On the step he sewed the bag. Two years ago he pricked his finger three times and the stitches ran long and short; last November, two new bags of thirty-one stitches in front of everyone; today even and close. Before the last stitch he stopped, carried the open bag in, crouched by the bed and held it before his father's eyes: "Father, this year's cell. Touch it."
In the yard by the table stood a long-faced man of fifty, beard neatly trimmed, wide sleeves spotted with ink, ink on his fingers that wouldn't wash off. He looked at the cloth, the bags, then through the window at the old man, the son, the open bag. "Wang Xizhi, of Kuaiji; I wrote characters." In my first year in Chengdu, Huang Tingjian told me how the Sage of Calligraphy washed his brushes in a pond till the water turned black. "That's his son? I had a son too, the youngest, Xianzhi. When he was seven or eight and learning to write, I crept up behind him and grabbed at the brush in his hand." Why? "To test him. A writer must hold the brush; if a tug pulls it away, the hand has no root. I tugged and it didn't move. I stood behind him a long while and told people: this boy's name will be great one day." Father and son came down together; people call us the Two Wangs. "But that tug had another half I've never told anyone."
Inside, Yiming's hand rose from the quilt, trembled halfway, rose again, and came to rest on the bag. He didn't pinch. He couldn't any more; his palm lay on the cloth against the raisins a long time. Then his fingers hooked a corner of the bag and pulled, once, very lightly. Kamil's hands closed by instinct. The bag didn't move. The fingers slipped off onto the quilt. Kamil went white, mouth open as if he'd done wrong: "Father, I…" The corner of the old man's mouth lifted, slowly, and stayed. A whisper; Kamil's ear at his lips, his shoulders shaking, then in Chinese: "He says: you held on." Outside, Wang Xizhi: "That day I used strength on Xianzhi's brush, but not all of it. I couldn't bear to: if I really pulled it away he'd cry and be afraid to hold a brush again. For years I wondered: did he hold, or did I hold back? Both are true. His father today didn't hold back. His father has no strength left. And still the son held on." — M.

Memo to file. Kuqa, 10 October 2038. The tug.
1. Sealing day. Both families on 10 October, fixed. Eli's family cell sealed at dawn; Yiming's not yet. He takes a few spoonfuls of soup a day; "he says he's waiting for you." Lighter and colder than in May.
2. Kamil's choice. At six, alone in the drying house, not asking his father: an hour, then a middling string, stems half browned, the right spring. Sewed on the step: two years ago long-and-short stitches and three pricked fingers; today even and close. Left the last stitch open; "Father, this year's cell. Touch it."
3. The precedent. Wang Xizhi crept up behind his young son Xianzhi and tugged at the brush in his hand: it didn't come away. "This boy will be famous." Father and son: the Two Wangs. "That tug had another half."
4. The hand. Yiming's palm came to rest on the bag; he couldn't pinch any more; it lay against the raisins a long time. Then his fingers hooked a corner and pulled, very lightly. Kamil's hands closed by instinct. It didn't move. Kamil went white: "Father, I…" A slow smile, a whisper: "You held on."
5. The other half. "I used strength on his brush, but not all of it; I couldn't bear to make him cry and fear the brush. For years: did he hold, or did I hold back? Both are true. A father's tug is always like that." And of today: "His father didn't hold back; he has no strength left. And still the son held on."
6. The card. In the brass-barrelled blue pen, Eli writing at Kamil's word: "10 October 2038. Chosen by Kamil. Sealed by Kamil." From the window, through Erkin: add one line: "Touched by Yiming." Most of the fifty-odd cards in that room bear Yiming's name; on this one his son's name comes first and his own is at the bottom.
7. The shelf. Bottom row, last slot, empty. Kamil set the bag in square, card facing out. Beside it 2037, Yiming's; then 2036 with its three-line card (blue, pencil, blue); further along, beside 1984, the bag from the wall, sealed by Yiming's father. By video from the bed: "Placed well. This row is Kamil's from now on."
8. The Wall Street version. A founder of sixty-five announced he'd hand over to his chosen successor; five years later he hadn't: every decision met with "think again", until the successor looked to his face before deciding anything; when the founder fell ill and truly left, the successor couldn't decide at all. Another founder tested his successor once, deliberately opposing him on something important to see whether he'd hold. He held. The founder cleared his office the next day.
9. The line. "Handing over isn't the moment the old one lets go. It's the moment the old one pulls back and the young one doesn't let go. When it won't come away, both are true: the old one hasn't that much strength any more, and the young one has hold. When a father accepts both, it's handed over."
10. After. Yiming asleep; Kamil on the stool by the bed with a damp cloth in his hand, not moving. All night the oxygen machine humming in the inner room.
11. My notes. "Chosen by Kamil, sealed by Kamil, touched by Yiming. The first time his father's name is at the bottom." "His father pulled once; he didn't let go; he thought he'd done wrong; his father said: you held on." "Both are true."
12. Next. Four in the morning, two light knocks on the side-room door. Kamil in a padded coat, the torch beam shaking on the ground: "Uncle Marco, my father is asking for you. He says: get Eli too."
"When he was seven or eight and learning to write, his father crept up behind him and tried to snatch the brush, and could not."
The Jin dynasty history records that Wang Xizhi, the greatest calligrapher in Chinese tradition, once tested his young son Xianzhi by grabbing at the brush in his hand from behind. The brush did not come away, and the father predicted the boy's future fame. Father and son are remembered together as the Two Wangs.
The anecdote is usually told as a story about the son's strength. It is also a story about how successions actually happen. A handover is completed less by the moment an elder lets go than by the moment the elder pulls back and the successor does not yield. The meaning of that moment is double: the successor's grip is real, and the elder's strength, or willingness to use it, is no longer what it was. Both are true at once.
Organisations whose founders cannot accept the second half never finish the handover. The successor learns to look for approval before every decision and cannot act alone when the founder is gone. Those whose founders test once, accept the result, and leave the room give the successor the grip he has shown.
"When it won't come away, both are true."
