「Sept 9, 1981. Radio says 10%. I say no rain. Didn't gather.」
「Sept 10. Rain 2 a.m. to dawn. Everything on the ground. Harry out in it till noon. Martin, 8, crying at the window.」
「Half gone. My fault. From now on, 10% we gather.」
Nora
Rose
Rose
Rose
“You two decide. I'm going to sleep.”
Nora
Martin
“Grandma used to sit at her window. Tonight, we sit here.”
English Mirror: You ask when I'll come home; I cannot say when. Night rain in the Ba hills is swelling the autumn pools. When shall we trim the candle together by the west window, and talk about this night of rain in the Ba hills? — The autumn overcast won't lift, the frost comes late; the withered lotus is left so I can hear the rain on it. — Toward evening, out of sorts, I drove up to the old plateau. The setting sun is boundlessly fine; only, it is near the dusk.
Nora
Nora
Nora
“Grandma would like him.”
Nora
Nora
Nora
Nora
“No. One of us stays at the window. That's the rule.”
她说:
“Grandma's rule. If two people are awake, one goes out, one stays and watches. If the one outside doesn't come back in ten minutes, the one inside goes.”
Nora
Nora
“Rolls are fine. Water's running between the rows, not into them. The canal side, row eight, a little pooling. Fine.”
Nora 说:
“Next time it gets long, I'll cut it.”
Rain 3:05–4:00. Rolled 3,000. Power out 3:10. Two awake.」
「Grandma slept.」
Nora:
Rose
“I heard it. Three o'clock.”
她说:
“I heard you two whispering in the kitchen. So I went back to sleep.”
“Show me.”
Nora
Rose
Dry.
Two awake. Grandma slept.
Rose
Good.
Martin
Nora 一串一串地看,看了一上午,看完了,在她那一栏里写:「On the trellis: rain on the vine. Can't roll. About three in a hundred moldy. My method's weak spot.」
「Fresno, Sept 15, 2038. Rain 3:05–4:00. Rolled 3,000, none sweated. On the trellis: can't roll, 3% moldy.」
「Two awake: one goes out, one keeps the window. Grandma's rule.」
「Nora Kazarian.」
January. The stump.
And bring your mother's book. The fifteenth. I want to see what she writes.
Then you read it to me.

Fourteenth of September, 2038, a Tuesday, ten at night, Fresno. One yellow lamp over the kitchen table; on it a laptop showing radar, patches of green and yellow edging from the sea toward the valley; Rose's seventy-second book, which Nora keeps now; and an old one, the fifty-sixth, 1981, the September when a ten-percent chance went unheeded and drowned a year. At four the forecast said thirty percent after midnight; at eight, thirty-five, from two to five. Three thousand-odd trays on the slopes of rows five to twelve, twelve days in the sun, seven or eight parts dry. This time nobody asked Rose. At nine, on Nora's arm at the kitchen door, she looked at the laptop and the two books, didn't ask the number, and said: "You two decide. I'm going to sleep." Nora: "Seventy-two years, and the first rainy night she's gone to bed." At ten past ten Nora shut the 1981 book: "Thirty-five. One in ten, gather; two in ten, roll. Roll." Calls to her father, the neighbours, Carol, the two brothers; by 10:40 the headlights of pickups at the field edge, nine people with head torches rolling row by row: not so tight the inside sweats, not so loose the rain gets in. Carol's first roll last year was like a stick; this year each one patted and laid on the ridge like a row of sleeping animals. I slowed at the seventh vine's five and a half trays. By ten to one, done. Martin: "Last year four thousand, blank. This year three thousand." He didn't go on. No stars; the south-west blacker than the rest. At one Nora set two chairs at the kitchen's west window. "Grandma used to sit at her window. Tonight, we sit here."
After two a thin man of forty in a grey-blue gown, its hem wet, stood in the kitchen doorway: "Two people awake." Li Shangyin; "I wrote poems; as a young man I was a secretary in the Ba-Shu country some years." I knew two of his lines as a boy, taught by my mother when my Chinese was poor: when shall we trim the candle together by the west window, and talk of this night's rain in the Ba hills. "Someone in the north wrote to ask when I'd come home. I couldn't say. That night the rain filled the pond and I wrote: you ask when I'll return; I can't say; tonight the Ba hills are raining and the autumn pool is rising; when will the two of us sit under the west window trimming one candle and talk about tonight? This one faces west too." Nora: "Grandma would like him." At 3:05, on the roof, tap. Tap. Then a third, a fourth, then everywhere. At 3:10 the power went; Nora found a candle and matches; a small yellow light on the sill, two cold coffees beside it. West window, candle, night rain: my mother taught me those lines when I was ten.
At 3:20 water ran in the furrows; Nora took a torch. I'll come. "No. One of us stays at the window. Grandma's rule: if two are awake, one goes out, one stays and watches; if the one outside isn't back in ten minutes, the one inside goes." I watched her light move along the rows. The wick grew long and smoked; I trimmed it with scissors and watched the black end drop. Trimming alone isn't trimming together. Seven minutes later she was back, dripping: "Rolls are fine. Water's running between the rows, not into them. Row eight a little pooling. Fine." "You cut it?" "It was smoking." "Next time it gets long, I'll cut it." At 3:40 she did. Rain eased at 3:50, stopped at four, a last tap, a long gap, another. In the book: "Sept 14–15. Rain 3:05–4:00. Rolled 3,000. Power out 3:10. Two awake." Then: "Grandma slept." At 5:10 my mother, 8:10 in New Jersey: "Xiao Ke, did it rain there in the night?" Her fifteenth book, yesterday: "14 September. Clear. Xiao Ke in Fresno. The phone says rain there tonight, thirty-five. I say: rain." "I was right." "When are you coming home?" — M.
Memo to file. Fresno, 14–15 September 2038. Two awake.
1. The forecast. Thirty percent after midnight, then thirty-five, 2–5 a.m.; three thousand-odd trays out, twelve days in, seven or eight parts dry. The 1981 book open: a ten-percent chance ignored, a year drowned.
2. Rose sleeps. At nine, without asking the number: "You two decide. I'm going to sleep." Nora: "Seventy-two years, and the first rainy night she's gone to bed."
3. The call. 10:10, Nora: "Thirty-five. One in ten, gather; two in ten, roll. Roll." Nine people with head torches (Martin, Carol, three neighbours, the two brothers, Nora, me), 10:40 to 12:50, three thousand trays. Not so tight it sweats, not so loose it floods. Carol's rolls like sleeping animals this year. Martin: "Last year four thousand, blank. This year three thousand."
4. The precedent. Li Shangyin, years a secretary in Ba-Shu, asked by letter when he'd come home, couldn't say; that night the rain filled the pond; "when will we two trim the candle by the west window and talk of this night's rain?" My mother taught me those two lines when I was ten. "This window faces west too."
5. The rain. 3:05 tap, tap, then everywhere; 3:10 power out; a candle in an old saucer on the sill. West window, candle, night rain.
6. The rule. At 3:20, water in the furrows. "One goes out, one stays at the window and watches; if the one outside isn't back in ten minutes, the one inside goes." Grandma's rule. Back in seven: rolls fine, water running between the rows, row eight pooling a little.
7. The wick. It smoked; I trimmed it alone. "Next time it gets long, I'll cut it." At 3:40 she did. Rain stopped at four. Book: "Rain 3:05–4:00. Rolled 3,000. Power out 3:10. Two awake. Grandma slept."
8. My mother. At 5:10 (8:10 in New Jersey): "Did it rain there in the night?" Her book for the fourteenth: "Xiao Ke in Fresno. The phone says rain there tonight, thirty-five. I say: rain." "I was right." "When are you coming home?" You ask when I'll return. This time I could say: October, Xinjiang; New Year's Eve, home; Sunday 23 January. "Good. I'll write it down."
9. The Wall Street version. The dealing desk's rule: large orders need two people, one to enter, one to watch, both to press. I thought it distrust, until two in the morning, trouble in Asia, a colleague's shaking hand added a zero, and the second said: wait, count the zeros. Tens of millions. One awake at three blurs; two awake, if one misses it, the other's still there.
10. The line. Li Shangyin: "My poem was one man in the Ba hills hoping for a day when two would sit at the west window and talk of that night's rain. That night I was alone; the day I hoped for never came. Tonight you were two." "One awake is enduring. Two awake is keeping watch. When the rain stops, the one who endured is the only one who knows that night. The ones who kept watch still have someone to talk it over with."
11. Morning. Rose at her door in her robe, hair loose: "I heard it. Three o'clock. I heard you two whispering in the kitchen. So I went back to sleep." Under "Grandma slept" she wrote, slowly, shaking: Good. North wind, sun; the three thousand rolls dry inside, nothing sweated.
12. Nora's half, and next. On the trellis nothing can be rolled; the grapes hung soaked all night. After a morning cluster by cluster: "Rain on the vine. Can't roll. About three in a hundred moldy. My method's weak spot." "You said the wrong ones need a place too. This is mine." 20 September, on the plane to China, Kamil's voice note overnight, hoarse: "My father's hardly eating. He says on 10 October, sealing day, he wants to watch, and you to be there. He says this year's cell, he wants to touch."

"You ask when I'll come home; I cannot say when. Night rain in the Ba hills is swelling the autumn pools. When shall we trim the candle together by the west window, and talk about this night of rain?"
Li Shangyin wrote these four lines while serving in Sichuan, in reply to someone in the north who had asked when he would return. He could not answer, so he described the rain filling the pond outside and imagined a future evening when the two of them, together at a west-facing window, would trim the candle and talk over the night he was spending alone.
Risk controls have a plain version of the same idea. Critical actions require two people: one acts, one watches, and both must confirm. The rule looks like distrust until the night it catches a tired hand adding a zero. A watch kept by two is also more durable than one kept by one. One can leave to check the field while the other holds the window, and after the event there is someone who saw it too.
The handover in this chapter is quiet. An old farmer who has read the sky from her window for seventy-two years goes to sleep on a rainy night because two younger people are awake. Her verdict in the morning is one word.
"One awake is enduring. Two awake is keeping watch."
