Eddie

English Mirror: "Your mother would tap on the door with her finger and say: Is the child cold? Does he want something to eat? And I would answer her from the other side of the boards." — After my wife came to our house she would often come into the study, ask me about the old stories, or lean on the desk and learn to write. — Long ill and listless, I had the southern room repaired; its arrangement was a little different from before. — In the courtyard there is a loquat tree that my wife planted with her own hands the year she died; now it stands tall, its branches spread like a canopy.

Carol

Carol

Third of February, 2038, a Wednesday, New Year's Eve, morning, New Jersey. The porch light died last night. Past nine I heard the switch click, click, click; my mother at the door, finger on it, looking up. "It flickered twice and went out." She pressed once more, then touched the worn pale ring beside the switch, eight-odd years of one finger at four every afternoon. That night the porch was dark. I'd arrived on 28 January at twenty past four, the light already on; she stood inside the door and watched me up the steps. Her first words: "The bed. Measure it." We measured, she called the numbers, I wrote them in her fifteenth book. Cover and lining on the machine, ready-made cotton batting from the Chinese supermarket in Edison, and the last step by hand: "quilting", three layers laid on the floor and drawn together with long stitches. "My mother did it every winter on the floor of the main room; I squatted beside her threading needles. A hundred-odd thousand pieces for other people, and never a quilt for myself." On the thirtieth she cut the cloth, chalked first, then: "Good. Now it's a quilt." Today she stopped: "Needlework doesn't cross the year. After New Year, the rest; in spring, the quilting."

On the thirtieth I'd given her a white card like the one from Turpan and shown her Abdurehman's six shaking characters. "The man who wrote fortune?" Yes; a month, 341 sheets. She took a ballpoint and wrote Lin Xiufen, slowly, squarely, then traced it from the first stroke, twice more. Mum, no need. "I always trace. The years on my sewing books too. If I don't, it doesn't look like mine." He doesn't trace: his hand. She traces three times: hers. In the afternoon I came back from the hardware store with a bulb (the warm yellow kind sold out; only "daylight" left) and, emptying the bin, found a thin, stooped man in an old blue scholar's gown under the bare jujube by the fence. "Whoever planted this tree isn't here any more." How could he tell? "The lower branches pruned, fresh cuts, uneven, an unpractised hand; the high ones out of reach. The first ten-odd years of cuts are one kind; these last few, another." Gui Youguang, of Kunshan, a teacher.

My father planted it the year I was eight, a foot-high sapling from a fellow villager in Flushing, roots in newspaper, carried home on the bus. "It grows slowly; ten years before it fruits well." How old will I be? "Eighteen." At eighteen I left for Columbia; that autumn it fruited heavily and I didn't taste one. Gui Youguang: a tiny study, a maid telling him "your mother stood here, tapped the door and asked, is the child cold, is he hungry"; his mother died when he was eight; years later his wife leaning on the desk to learn writing; after she died, one last line: the loquat she planted the year she died now stands tall as a canopy. "I didn't write that I missed her. I wrote how tall the tree was." At four I changed the bulb; she pressed the switch: white, a little brighter; the porch boards their own colour now, not honey. "It's different." I'll find a yellow one. "No. This one." At five she brought down the blue tin: the old bulb wrapped in a handkerchief on top, and the 2019 letter. "Han Lixin, QC, year twenty-four." "Use this." I told the printer: those no longer here, print. "He's here. His own hand. He never handed this letter in. This time his name goes in." — M.

Memo to file. New Jersey, 28 January – 3 February 2038. A name handed in.

1. The light. Died the night of the second after two flickers. She pressed three times, then touched the worn ring. The porch dark for one night.

2. The quilt. Bed measured on the twenty-ninth, numbers in her fifteenth book. Cover and lining by machine; batting ready-made; the last step by hand, "quilting", three layers on the floor, long stitches, as her mother did each winter while she threaded needles. "Over a hundred thousand pieces for other people; never a quilt for myself." Cloth chalked, then cut: "Good. Now it's a quilt." New Year's Eve: "Needlework doesn't cross the year."

3. Her name. Shown Abdurehman's card, she wrote Lin Xiufen on hers and traced it twice more. "I always trace. If I don't, it doesn't look like mine." I'd told the printer: no tracing, not even the shaky strokes. His untraced hand is his; her thrice-traced hand is hers.

4. The precedent. Gui Youguang, a teacher from Kunshan, who passed the highest exam only at sixty: at eighteen he wrote of a tiny, leaking family study; of a maid telling him "your mother stood here and tapped the door: is the child cold, is he hungry?" (she died when he was eight); later of his wife leaning on the desk to learn writing; after her death he added a last line: the loquat she planted the year she died now stands tall as a canopy. "Of all I wrote, that's the line people kept. In it I don't say I missed her. I only say how tall the tree is."

5. The jujube. He read the tree from its cuts: ten-odd years of one hand's cuts, then a few years of another's, uneven, the high branches left. My father planted it when I was eight: "ten years before it fruits well"; at eighteen I left; that autumn it fruited heavily. Since 2021 my mother prunes only what she can reach.

6. The new bulb. Yellow sold out; "daylight". At four she pressed the switch: whiter, brighter, the boards their real colour, grain visible. "It's different." No to finding a yellow one: "This one." The old bulb went upstairs, wrapped in a handkerchief, into the blue tin. Gui Youguang on the study he had repaired after a long illness: "Afterwards it was different from before. And afterwards I was seldom home." Repaired things are not the same. They are still there.

7. The letter. The 2019 letter my father wrote and never handed in, flagged "hand in after promotion"; no promotion. Last page: Han Lixin, QC, year twenty-four. "Use this." I said: those no longer here, print. "He's here. He signed it. His own hand. This letter never went in. This time, his name does." Her eyes dry, mouth set.

8. Only the name. QC, year twenty-four? "Just the name. The rest he wrote for the factory. Put it in a book and people will think he did twenty-four years. He did twenty-six." The printer: "This hand's not like the first; it's steady." He was a QC inspector. When he wrote this he was still here.

9. Letters unsent. Gui Youguang: "My piece was one too. What I wrote for my mother and my wife, neither read a word. I knew they wouldn't. Still you write it; then they stand in that room for good."

10. New Year's Eve calls. Turpan: the doorframe strings; on his board one new left-handed character: year. "Better than last year's fortune," said my mother; the corner of his mouth lifted. Fresno: Carol had driven to Ortega's on the west side, salt-white ground, an old man of about eighty in a straw hat: "I told him your raisins were beautifully dried, thirty years, all of them; small is your land. He cried. Thirty years and nobody had told him." Rose: write today's sky. "Clear, cold. I say clear tomorrow." Kuqa: Yiming in bed sends greetings; the cells are waiting. Aksu: He Yuan's "Cracks" page in a plastic sleeve, another half line in pencil.

11. Her book. "3 February. New Year's Eve. Clear, cold. The bulb broke; Xiao Ke put in a new one, white. Not changing it. Your father's name has gone in. The man in Turpan wrote 'year'. Rose sends greetings. Carol visited an old man; he cried. Yiming sends greetings. He Yuan changed his page again. I say clear tomorrow." Under the tree Gui Youguang: "He didn't plant it for you. When he planted it, it was for you. Once planted, it's for itself. You left and it fruited; he left and it grew. That's what a planter plants: it stays when he's gone. So does the name on that letter." The line: "Of the loquat I didn't write that I missed her, only how tall it was. How many years a man's been gone needn't be said; look how tall the things he planted have grown."

12. Next. Near midnight, upstairs in my old room, two light taps, one finger: "Xiao Ke, cold? Hungry?" Through the door: not cold, not hungry. "If the quilt's not enough there's another in the cupboard. In spring when the new one's quilted, I'll make you one." Downstairs the white light on. Two minutes past midnight, Shao Min: this year she tested one person at a time, not shift averages. Upstairs 82%, shift two 76%. "But one person upstairs, twelve tests in a year, never improved once. The average hid him for a year. Xiao Xu."

"In the courtyard there is a loquat tree that my wife planted with her own hands the year she died; now it stands tall, its branches spread like a canopy."
Gui Youguang, a sixteenth-century essayist from Kunshan, wrote "The Record of the Xiangji Studio" about a cramped room in his family house: his grandmother visiting him there, a servant recalling how his mother, who died when he was eight, would tap on the door to ask whether the child was cold or hungry, and later his young wife leaning on the desk to learn to write. After her death he added a final sentence about a loquat tree she had planted, which has become one of the most quoted lines in Chinese prose precisely because it says nothing about grief.
The sentence works by measuring absence through growth. What a person plants by hand keeps growing after they are gone, and its height tells how long they have been gone without anyone having to say it. The same is true of a signature on a letter, a habit in a household, a tree in a back garden.
When something such a person made is finally used for the purpose they intended, it is less a memorial than a delivery: their own handwriting, handed in on their behalf, for the one time they could not hand it in themselves.
"How many years a man's been gone needn't be said; look how tall the things he planted have grown."
