Han
What for.
Eddie
Eddie
Eddie
Eddie
Han
Eddie
Han
Eddie
Eddie
Eddie
Eddie
Eddie
Eddie
Eddie
English Mirror: "Gongshu cut bamboo and wood into a magpie; when it was finished he flew it, and it stayed up for three days. Gongshu thought himself supremely clever. Master Mo said to him: Your magpie is not as good as a carpenter's linchpin. In a moment he whittles three inches of wood, and it bears a load of fifty dan. So what benefits people is called clever; what does not benefit people is called clumsy." — "Even with the eyesight of Li Lou and the skill of Gongshu, without compass and square you cannot make circles and squares."

Twenty-first of January, 2037, a Wednesday, two in the afternoon, New Jersey. A two-storey brick nursing home on the north side of town, a bare tree at the door, the snow under it unshovelled and deep. A long bright corridor smelling of disinfectant, every door open, every television on the same channel. At the far end, by the window, a very tall old man in a wheelchair, the big frame still visible though he'd grown thin, broad shoulders, big hands on the armrests, the right forefinger missing its last joint. "Eddie, Han's son is here." He looked at me for a long time. "You look like him. When you're not smiling."
Thirty years on the machines at the box factory by the river, twenty-one of them beside my father. Eddie ran the corrugator, a line over a hundred metres long: paper in at one end, hot, pressed layer on layer into flutes, out at the other end as board. Han stood at the end of the line, checking the board and the boxes. "He was the only one in the place who asked why." Asked what? "Every truck that came to load, he walked over and asked the driver: what's going in these? For years they laughed at him. The drivers said: how would I know, I just haul them. He didn't care. He asked, and took a little grey notebook out of his shirt pocket and wrote it down. Later the drivers knew him; before he reached the cab they'd shout out the window: cold store! Sea freight! Cans!" He laughed until he coughed.
Then: "There's something I haven't told anyone for twenty-odd years. He told me not to. He's been gone fifteen years and I'm ninety-one. If I don't tell it now, nobody will know." Winter 2015: twenty thousand boxes for a frozen-vegetable company, specified in the lightest single-wall board. Han to sales: frozen vegetables go in a cold store, it's damp, eight high, this board won't hold. "The customer didn't ask." To the plant manager: "We make what the customer wants." That night Eddie was on the machine. Han came at midnight: switch the inner liner to the next grade up; same price, same flute, nobody can tell. Who pays for the extra paper? "Put it on me." Seven thousand that night; thirteen thousand the next day on the other shift, to the spec.
A month later most of the thirteen thousand came back, crushed in the bottom two layers in the cold store, frozen vegetables all over the floor. Not one of the seven thousand came back. Nobody asked why the seven thousand didn't come back. What they asked was why that month's paper usage was high. It was traced to the night shift and to Han: a written statement, a disciplinary note on his file. "That year he was going to be made QC lead. They crossed his name off the list. He told me: don't tell anyone; you'll get it too. So I didn't. Twenty-two years." From the cabinet by the wheelchair: a rubber stamp, wooden handle worn bare, the die cut QC 07. "His. He left it on his desk when he went and I kept it. He didn't like it. After every stamp he wiped it on his shirt. He said the thing he stamped most in his life was pass, and the thing he least wanted to stamp was pass." — M.
Memo to file. New Jersey, 21–22 January 2037. What my father did once, and what it cost.
1. Eddie. Ninety-one, corrugator operator for thirty years, twenty-one of them beside my father; the tip of his right forefinger lost to the machine. Fifteen cards, one a year: thinking of Han today. "You look like him when you're not smiling."
2. The question. Every truck, every driver: what's going in these? Years of laughter; then the drivers shouted it out of the cab before he reached them: cold store, sea freight, cans. The grey notebook in the tin is where those answers went.
3. Winter 2015. Twenty thousand boxes for frozen vegetables, lightest single-wall board specified. Sales: the customer didn't ask. The plant manager: we make what the customer wants. Midnight, the night shift: next grade up on the inner liner, same price, same flute, invisible. "Put it on me." Seven thousand that way; thirteen thousand the next day to spec.
4. The outcome. Most of the thirteen thousand came back crushed. None of the seven thousand came back. Nobody asked why the seven thousand held. They asked why the paper usage was high. A disciplinary note; his name crossed off the promotion list for QC lead that year. "Don't tell anyone; you'll get it too." Eddie kept it twenty-two years. My mother's version of that winter: he came home and said he hadn't been promoted; asked why, he said there was no why; she was angry with him: no reason means you didn't do the job well. He didn't argue.
5. The stamp. QC 07, wooden handle worn bare. "He stamped pass more than anything else in his life, and pass was what he least wanted to stamp." My mother pressed it into her own palm and lifted it: a faint QC 07. "He did the job well."
6. Clever and clumsy. The carpenter who made a bamboo-and-wood magpie that flew three days and thought himself the cleverest man alive; Mo Di told him it was worse than a carpenter's linchpin, three inches of wood whittled in a moment that bears a cart of fifty dan. What benefits people is clever; what doesn't is clumsy. He resented it for years, then accepted it. Holding an opened carton: "What was this made to carry? If you don't know, you can't know whether it's clever or clumsy. For five pounds it's clever; for fifty in a damp room eight high it's clumsy. Same box. Clever and clumsy aren't in the box; they're in what it carries." He said my father understood Mo Di's sentence earlier than he did.
7. The line. "Whether a thing is clever isn't how fine it looks; it's what it holds up for people." Winter 2015, the seven thousand held. Nobody knows who.
8. Rules. From Mencius: even the sharpest eyes and the most skilful hands can't make squares and circles without compass and square. "Rules are needed; your father's stamp is a rule. But people make the rules, and when they make them they should ask first what this square, this circle, is for." He hung his carpenter's square back on his belt and turned a corner among the cartons.
9. The order form now. Fourteen columns. Column eleven: end use. Four boxes: contents; where stored, temperature, humidity; stack height; duration. Added in 2023 when a new owner had the returns audited: nine-tenths of what came back had passed; it had been put in the wrong place. The next year returns fell by more than half. I gave the quality manager my father's letter. "2019? Almost exactly ours. Four years earlier." May she pin a copy on her office wall? Yes, without his name. Why? "What he wanted wasn't his name. It was for someone to ask."
10. What else Eddie said. Why the cards? "Because I owe him a sentence. That winter, when the manager asked who changed the paper, he said he did. I changed the paper; I ran the machine; they were my hands. He carried my share too. I never thanked him. A card a year was written to him and to myself." On his retirement in 2016 my father gave him a carton with a bottle of whisky in it and wrote on the side: one bottle, kept at home, one year, not stacked. He judged board with his fingertips, pressing: "Thirty years on the machine and what I couldn't see, he knew with one press." His last day was March 2021: he wiped the desk clean, took the notebook, left the stamp. The next day he went into hospital.
11. Two ledgers. Clever or clumsy, then, my father? "In the plant manager's ledger, clumsy: he used extra paper. In the cold store, clever. Mo Di's sentence is about the cold store's ledger." The quality manager: the returns records from before 2020 were pulped when the company changed hands; nothing survives from those years. My father's grey notebook, 2012 to 2020, may be the only record. May she see it? It's in a tin at home; it's his. The cold-store test room was added in 2023 with the column; who thought of it? "The auditors, reading a year of return slips one by one." He read them one by one for nine years. At the gate: if he'd been promoted, the column might have come in 2016. Perhaps. Or perhaps it would still have waited until 2023.
12. My mother's own "pass". "The man who gave out the piecework checked every garment. Once he said one of mine failed; I unpicked it and sewed it again till midnight. Later I learned he'd measured it wrong. I didn't argue either." On the letter on the office wall without his name: "Better without. He didn't like being looked at." On the notebook: "Keep it safe. He kept it because he was afraid that one day nobody would remember."
13. Next. The printed form into the blue tin beside the pencilled one, the stamp between them. Fourteen columns and ten; column eleven, end use, four boxes; column ten, why make it, four boxes. My mother: "New Year's Eve in twenty-three days. Buy flour tomorrow, good flour. And a bottle of ink. Your father used to write a couplet on New Year's Eve and put it up by the door. Since he died, nothing has gone up by the door."

"Whether a thing is clever isn't how fine it looks; it's what it holds up for people."
Gongshu Ban, known as Lu Ban, is the legendary patron of Chinese carpenters and builders; many inventions are attributed to him that he almost certainly did not make. One of the earliest stories about him, from the Mozi, is less flattering. He carved a wooden magpie that flew for three days and thought himself the cleverest craftsman alive. The philosopher Mo Di told him it was worth less than a carpenter's linchpin: three inches of wood, quickly made, that keeps the wheel on a cart carrying a heavy load. What benefits people, Mo Di said, is clever; what does not is clumsy.
Engineers call the same idea fitness for purpose. A corrugated box is a row of small arches between two flat sheets, strong in one direction and weak in another, and whether it is good depends entirely on what it must carry, where, and for how long. A box can pass every laboratory test and collapse in a damp cold store.
Organisations tend to reward conformity to specification and to notice cost overruns quickly. They are slower to notice the failures that did not happen, and slower still to trace them to the person who prevented them.
"He stamped pass more than anything else in his life, and pass was what he least wanted to stamp."
