English Mirror: "When I was six months old my father died; when I was four my mother's family made her remarry. My grandmother, pitying me, orphaned and weak, raised me herself. I was often ill as a child and could not walk at nine; alone and friendless I grew up." — "Without my grandmother I would not be where I am today; without me my grandmother cannot live out her remaining years. Grandmother and grandson, we keep each other alive; and so I cannot bring myself to leave her." — "I am forty-four this year and my grandmother is ninety-six. The days in which I may serve Your Majesty are long; the days in which I may repay her care are short. As the crow feeds its parent, I ask to be allowed to look after her to the end." — (The Book of Jin says that when his grandmother was ill he kept watch in tears, did not undress to sleep, and tasted her food and medicine himself first.)
Thinking of Han today.

Tenth of January, 2037, a Saturday, noon, New Jersey. The snow had stopped. The steps were shovelled clean, the snow banked into two low walls on either side; the neighbour's son. The porch light off. Inside, the heating turned up high and the television on low. My mother on the sofa under a blanket, a heating pad under her back, a bowl of soup on the side table hardly touched. She heard the door and tried to sit up; pushed once, couldn't, lay back. "You're back." "Mum." "It's nothing. I twisted it. The soup's from next door. Have you eaten?" On the back of her hand, outside the blanket, a bruise from catching herself against the wall.
I put Rose's paper bag in her hand; it was no longer warm. She took one raisin and chewed a long time. "Sweet. Did you see her hands?" Like old leather. She nodded, folded the bag shut and put it by her pillow. That afternoon: the bowl back next door with thanks; the clinic's first appointment on Monday; my mattress dragged down from upstairs to the floor beside the sofa. "Sleep upstairs; the floor is cold." You'll need help getting up at night. "I can get up myself." Mum. She stopped.
At four it began to get dark. She looked once toward the door, at the switch on the wall. I got up and started toward it. Halfway, behind me: "Don't. You're home."
At one in the morning she needed to get up. One hand behind her back, one for her to grip, one, two, three, together. Her whole weight on one of my arms. Lighter than I expected; so light my heart dropped. Sofa to bathroom, a dozen steps, five minutes, a pause and a breath at every step. In the old armchair a thin man in a dark robe, still fully dressed as if he had slept in his clothes for several nights, watching the sleeper with complete attention. Quietly: "How many times does she get up in the night?" Twice. "Twice the first few nights. It gets less." Li Mi. — M.
Memo to file. New Jersey, 10–13 January 2037. The arithmetic I never did.
1. The house. Steps shovelled by the neighbour's son. Mother on the sofa, heating pad, soup untouched, a bruise on her hand from the wall. Thursday she was out shovelling at six; the son came at eight and it was done. Friday she couldn't get up. "It's nothing. I twisted it."
2. Night duty. Up twice a night. One hand behind her back, one for her grip, one-two-three. Her whole weight on one arm, and it was light. Sofa to bathroom, a dozen steps, five minutes. Li Mi's advice: don't pull her by the arm; support her back and let her use her own back to rise. "In those years I never undressed at night. I tasted her medicine first. Not to be seen to be dutiful; in case it was too hot, too bitter."
3. The precedent. From the Sichuan basin, not far from Chengdu. His father died when he was six months old; at four his mother was made to remarry; his grandmother raised him; sickly, he could not walk at nine; she carried him until he could walk, study, stand as a man. When the court summoned him to office repeatedly, she was ninety-six and bedridden. He wrote that without her he would not be what he was, and without him she could not live out her years.
4. His sum. "I was forty-four, she was ninety-six. My years of service ahead were many; my years to repay her care were few. The long end can wait; the short end cannot."
5. Mine. She is sixty-nine. Say she lives to eighty-five: sixteen years. At the rate of the last eight, one visit every eight years: two more visits, five days and a month. Thirty-five days. At one visit a year of a month: four hundred and eighty days. I have discounted a company's cash flows fifteen years out to the present value of today more times than I can count. I never did this one.
6. The line. "The long end can wait; the short end can't. If the account needs both, put your weight on the short end first." Turpan: weighing the cabinet half on 10 March, a roomful of people waiting. That end can wait. This one can't.
7. Sunday. Snow at five-thirty. My father's shovel, a wooden handle wrapped in black tape he wound himself. Done before light. She watched through the window from the sofa: "You left a strip along the edge." Same as yours.
8. Monday. Clinic: no fracture; a disc pressing on a nerve. Six weeks: no shovelling, no lifting, no bending; heat daily; walk slowly. "Six weeks? That's the end of February." Yes. In the car: "You've got your ticket for the twenty-second. Go. The neighbour will look in."
9. The ticket. That night, 22 January, New York to Chengdu. A long pause on the date field. Changed to 18 February. New Year's Eve is 14 February. To Alim: I'll be back in March; on the tenth I'll be there. "My father says: good." Then: "My father wrote one more character: home." At breakfast I told her. The spoon stopped at the rim of the bowl. "And your work over there?" The weighing is on 10 March; I'll arrive that day. She put the spoon down and looked at the porridge a long time. "Then you'll be home for New Year." Yes. "Nine years."
10. What the neighbour saw. Thursday at six, through her window: my mother shovelling; she knocked on the glass and called out to wait for her son; my mother waved and kept going; at the bottom of the steps she straightened halfway, stopped, and held the rail a long time. "She was afraid you'd come home to a dirty step." My mother's version: "I thought, he's back Saturday, he'll be dragging a case; the snow has to be cleared. On the last push something went crack in my back. I held the rail a while; I could stand, so I came in. Next morning I couldn't get up." Why not let the neighbour tell me? "You were over there learning how people dry grapes. That doesn't come twice." On Rose's seventy-one notebooks: "She recorded the weather, I recorded pieces. Both of us, one person, sitting down at night to write a line." Every Christmas for eight years she took the neighbours a plate of dumplings.
11. Small things. Heated soup: "I'll do it myself"; her hand shook and half the spoonful went on the blanket. Tomato and egg noodles, and from the sofa: egg first, take it out, then tomato. You put the tomato in first. I taste her soup before giving it to her: trying the heat. Red-flower oil at night: "Your hands are heavy." Lighter. "A bit heavier." Then: "Since your father died, nobody has rubbed my back." My father's shovel, and her instruction through the glass: he pushed, he didn't dig; push it to the side, pile it, then lift and throw. Digging one scoop at a time, the back can't take it. At the clinic: "Do you live alone?" A glance at me. "Not now."
12. The only grandson. Li Mi: "The court can find many men to serve. My grandmother had one grandson." Over there, others can do the work: Shao Min has five masters, Alim has Eli, Yiming has Kamil, Chang Yushan has Lu Xiao. Here, my mother has one son. On leaving he looked at the switch by the door: "She has turned that on for years." How do you know? "The wall around it is worn white."
13. Prices and replies. Changing the ticket cost three hundred and some dollars; thirty-nine days instead of twelve; twenty-seven extra days at about eleven dollars a day. Luo, by voice message: "Should have done it long ago." Eli: wish your mother a happy New Year from us. Kamil: Yiming says good; the cells are waiting. Rose, through Nora: "Your mother's September came in January." I read it to my mother. What is September? When their trays are on the ground and one rain loses the year. "Then that's it." And of the eight New Year's Eves alone: twenty dumplings made, ten eaten, ten frozen for the next day. "Every year you phoned and I said I'd had my dumplings. I had. Ten." This time she didn't ask when I'd be back.
14. Next. "If you're staying till New Year, go to your father's factory. It's still there, under another name. Someone sends a card every year on the day your father died. The card is signed Eddie."

"The long end can wait; the short end can't. If the account needs both, put your weight on the short end first."
Li Mi was a third-century scholar from Sichuan whose father died when he was an infant and whose mother was made to remarry. His grandmother raised him. When the Jin court summoned him to office, she was ninety-six and ill, and he wrote a memorial asking to be excused until she died. It is still read in Chinese schools, above all for one sentence of arithmetic: he was forty-four and she was ninety-six, so the years in which he could serve the state were many and the years in which he could repay her were few.
Finance has a precise word for the length of time over which a stream of value will be received: duration. Most people manage the relationships in their lives as if every duration were long. It is one of the few calculations that analysts, who compute present values all day, rarely perform on their own lives.
The arithmetic is simple and unkind. At one visit every eight years, a parent of sixty-nine may have two more. At one visit a year, the total rises more than tenfold.
"Don't. You're home."
