English Mirror: (Wang Dayuan, of Nanchang in the Yuan, as a young man twice took passage on merchant ships and visited dozens of lands; on his return he wrote his record of the islands and peoples overseas.) — (Each entry first describes a place's mountains and rivers, customs and climate; then what the land produces; and at the end, "the goods used in trade are …", listing them.) — All of it is from places I travelled myself, seen with my own eyes and heard with my own ears. What was only told to me, I have not recorded.

Twenty-eighth of June, 2036, ten in the morning, Turpan. Boss Hu's blue truck at the gate, empty sacks in the back. Fifty-odd, from Shanshan, buying in this area for over a decade — March to May last year's stored goods, September to November the new crop. Today, the last of the stored goods. A handshake for Alim, a nod for me, straight to the storeroom. He squatted, spread a handful on his palm, squeezed one hard between two fingers: "This one's dried through, seven twenty." Second sack: "Still a bit damp, seven." Third: "Same as the first, seven twenty." He offered Alim a cigarette; Alim waved it away. Three sentences, not one word of sweet. Alim's hardback notebook: what the buyers say. Three lines for today, each with a bag number. Since March, two hundred and seventeen. Guli, back from Urumqi last night, laid hers beside it — seven hundred and forty-odd for the same months. Two notebooks, one yard, one table. Sorted by her seven lines: her end — sweetness 31 per hundred, price 12, dry/soft/hard 14; Alim's end — sweetness 4, price 58, dried-through-or-not 29. "Our goods either way. The people who eat them talk about sweet; the people who take them from this yard talk about price. The two ends aren't speaking the same language."
Wang Dayuan came at noon. Very young, twenty or so, burnt dark the way the sea burns you; a short coarse jacket, trousers rolled to the knee, an oilcloth pack on his back. He leafed through Guli's notebook, then Alim's, then pushed the two together until they touched: "These two record the two ends of the same goods."
From the pack, a book ringed with yellow tide-marks from seawater. As a young man I went out on merchant ships, twice, to dozens of places. When I came back I wrote an entry for each, all to one pattern: first the mountains, rivers, weather, how people live; then what the place produces; and last, the goods used in trade. What are those? When outside ships reach the place, what they bring to exchange — what the people there want. What the place produces is one end. What others bring and they want is the other. Write both ends and you know how trade is done there. Write one and you think you understand; you understand half. And: your two books are the produce and the goods-in-trade. Apart, they're two languages. Put in one entry, they're a trade. But how do they go into one entry — one says sweet, one says price? When I write a place, produce and trade goods are about the same place. Are your two books about the same batch of goods? Guli: forty per cent of her shop is her family's goods; she used to record date, who, what was said — not which bag; only since April, after the night she first coded by seven lines, has she added a bag number. Alim: every bag has left the yard with its house and take-down date since the year of the ruler. So: only April to June can be matched. And, and I picked up the pen: when the two ends don't match, first ask whether they speak of the same thing; if they do, string the two ends together with that thing. — M.

Memo to file. Turpan, 28 June 2036. Farm-gate remarks and retail remarks, joined for the first time by bag number. The middle's price penalises what the end consumer prefers — on eleven bags.
1. The two ledgers. Alim: what the buyers say, March–June, 217 remarks, every one with a bag number. Guli: retail remarks, same period, 740-odd; bag numbers only since April. By the seven lines: retail — sweetness 31%, price 12%, texture 14%; farm gate — sweetness 4%, price 58%, dryness 29%.
2. The join. Eleven bags appear in both ledgers (April–June). Split by what the buyer said: — "Dried through," paid the higher price: 6 bags → 94 retail remarks: sweet 21, hard/gritty 16; repeat-customer purchases 11. — "Still a bit damp," docked 0.2: 5 bags → 87 retail remarks: sweet 34, soft/good 19, hard 3; repeat purchases 23. The bags the middle docked are the bags the eaters liked and came back for.
3. Scope, written on the sheet. Eleven bags only; April–June only; only our family's goods that entered Guli's shop. Not to be taken for all of Turpan. The precedent's own rule: he recorded only places he had been, things seen and heard himself; hearsay not recorded. What is seen firsthand amounts to what it amounts to; write one part more and it becomes hearsay.
4. No villain. The buyer is right at his end: damp goods risk spoiling in storage and moulding in transit; the 0.2 is his risk. The shop is right at its end. Two true statements, three hundred kilometres apart, never before on one sheet. Not a lie at either end — nothing in the middle stringing them together. Today it was a number on a bag. Guli added that column in April, the night she first counted; nobody knew then what it was for.
5. The drift it explains. Alim: "My father hung his on the soft side; buyers docked him and he didn't care. When I took over, Boss Hu said damp twice and I moved drier. I've been following the price."
5a. The real confusion: soft is not damp. Phoned Boss Hu next morning with the figures. "I don't want hard; I want it not to spoil. If soft goods won't spoil, I'll pay seven twenty for them too." Can your pinch tell soft from damp? "Not really. Soft feels soft, damp feels soft. One squeeze and I count it all as damp." Softness belongs to the grape; dampness is water not yet gone. His pinch merges two neighbours — as the five masters in Shanghai merged grades three and four. Guli went through all nine notebooks: customers do separate them — soft is followed by good and like when I was little; sticky, clammy by won't buy again. Her eighth line: soft and damp recorded separately. The eaters can tell soft from damp; the middle, with one squeeze, cannot. To Alim: next year, for the test house, weigh a handful, dry it overnight, weigh again; a small loss means soft, not damp — show Hu the number. Alim: if my father had had that number, he'd never have been docked those two mao.*
6. Their proposal, not mine. Guli: split it — hang the shop's share soft, the buyers' share dry. Alim: "Then the houses, the bags and the numbers all split. Next year I'll try one house." Recorded: proposed by Alim, 28 June 2036; one house next year. Not marked good or bad.
6a. The design of the one-house test. House two, hung soft as his father did, taken down two days early; bags prefixed soft; sold only through Guli's shop; the other houses as usual. And not a year's wait: Guli will come back each quarter and the two ledgers will be matched on this table. Quarterly, from 2036. I don't need to be there. Their father, told the finding line by line, tapped the column of docked-but-loved bags once with his left hand. Alim: Dad, you were right to hang them soft.*
7. Next. Luo, 1 July: "Boss Ma, my ledgers — I want to give them away. Twenty-six years, one a year, in the iron cabinet at the store. Come. How to give them away, I want to decide in front of you."

"Write both ends and you know how trade is done there. Write one and you think you understand; you understand half."
A fourteenth-century traveller from Nanchang sailed twice with merchant ships and recorded nearly a hundred places around the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean. His entries follow a fixed template: the land and its customs, what the place produces, and finally "the goods used in trade," what arriving merchants brought to exchange and what local people wanted. His afterword adds a rule of evidence that could serve any analyst: everything recorded was seen or heard firsthand; what was merely reported was left out.
The template matters because every market has two ends, and each end describes the goods in its own vocabulary. In this chapter, the people who buy raisins at the farm gate talk almost entirely about price and dryness; the people who eat them talk about sweetness and softness. Read separately, the two ledgers seem to be about different things.
They become one ledger only when something physical links them, here a number written on each bag. Joined that way, even a handful of bags reveals a structural problem. The intermediary pays a premium for dry goods, because damp goods are his storage risk. Consumers prefer the softer goods and come back for them. The middle's price signal pushes producers away from what the end customer wants. Nobody at either end is wrong.
The traveller's rule applies to the finding: eleven bags are eleven bags.
What is seen firsthand amounts to what it amounts to; write one part more and it becomes hearsay.
