English Mirror: Zaiyu was devoted to learning and of the truest character. Grieving that his father had been confined for no crime, he built an earthen hut outside the palace gate and lived there alone on a straw mat for nineteen years. — (The history further records: when his father died, the title was his to inherit. Zaiyu petitioned to yield it; he submitted seven memorials in all before his request was granted.) — His new method of tuning: not taking the nine-inch Yellow Bell as the root; not using the rule of adding and subtracting a third; not bound to generating each note from the eighth before it. — From his songs for waking the world: all day running about, only because of hunger; no sooner fed than thinking of clothes.

Seventeenth of May, 2035, nine in the morning, the Chang yard. Changbin chose the day. It used to be his father's to choose. Did your father know? He knows; he said fine. When I came in, Chang Yushan wasn't there. By the east wall, a wooden stool, four legs, half a brick under one of them. Every May for five years he sat on it and watched Changbin choose across the yard, and said one sentence in five years — the first time, 2030: choose a middling one; choose the best and next year you can't reach it. Today the stool was empty. He had gone to his sister's in Shanshan yesterday afternoon, two days, Changbin said.

I had logged the month without meaning to count it. Standing there, I counted. One: 14 April, via Changbin — don't discuss May with me. Two: 20 April, my call not taken; an hour later, two characters: ask Bin. Three: late April, the key to house five taken off his belt and hung on a nail behind the kitchen door. Four: 3 May, asked which strings this year — why are you asking me? Five: 10 May, told the date — fine, and not one other word. Six: 16 May, to Shanshan. Seven: this empty stool. Seven. I stood a long time.

Zhu Zaiyu was already sitting by the west wall — exactly a yard's width from the stool. Fifties, thin, a gown washed pale; beside him an abacus so big it looked like a small door — eighty-one rods, I counted later; across his knees twelve bamboo pipes, each shorter than the last. He looked at the empty stool and said: he's yielded. I read him the seven. He smiled. Seven. Same as me. Yielded what? A title. When my father died, that seat was mine. I memorialised that I would not take it, that it should go to another branch. Refused. Again. Refused. Again. Seven times, and it was granted. Why seven? Once or twice, they think you're being polite. Three or four, they think you're sulking at someone. By seven they believe you truly won't sit. And, and I picked up the pen: to yield a thing, saying it once is saying it; saying it seven times is yielding.

Changbin took the key off the nail, glanced back at the east wall, and went in. This year I stayed outside, as agreed. Zhu took the longest pipe. This is the Yellow Bell. Low and steady. The old way begins from it. Cut the pipe by a third and you get a note; lengthen that one by a third and you get another; cut, lengthen, cut, lengthen — twelve notes. Adding and subtracting a third. A thousand or two thousand years in use. Good? Good. Except for one thing. At the twelfth cut you should arrive back at the Yellow Bell. You can't. He held another pipe beside it — almost the same length — and blew both: two notes very close and not the same, something trembling between them. That little gap. Because of it you can only begin from the Yellow Bell. Begin anywhere else and as you sing it drifts.

I said: their family's string was like that. It could only start from his father. His father bites and says it comes back, and it comes back. Changbin bites and says it, and everyone still glances at his father. — Because the Yellow Bell is in his father's teeth. And: while the Yellow Bell is in one man, that man can't yield. He may want to; he can't. When he goes, the key goes with him. And: half my life I spent yielding that seat, half calculating this. He patted the abacus. I wanted a method where the twelve notes are equally wide and one turn brings you exactly home. Then anyone can set the key; start from any note and it sings true. Did you get it? Several root extractions. On this, rod by rod, to twenty-some places. Many years. And, five times into the book: when the Yellow Bell is no longer in one man, anyone can set the key; when anyone can set the key, that man can yield.

I thought of last spring: the cupboard half in Turpan divided, one bag per family, the board reading this is the ruler; 2031, house two; do not open. Changbin, on receiving it: what's it for? What you choose, compare with it. And my father? What he chose, compare with it too. — Then from now on it isn't comparing with my father. That was last April. Last May, blind, by pinch: his father's four strings (2026–29) and his own five (2030–34) against the ruler — all within one grade. The furthest of Changbin's, 2031, one grade; the furthest of his father's, 2027, one grade. I told Chang Yushan. He said nothing, and sat on his stool that May as always. This April: don't discuss it with me. Eleven months to believe it. One month to yield it seven times. — M.

Memo to file. The Chang yard, 17–19 May 2035. Key-person risk, retired — by the key person, at a pace I would not have chosen and could not have hurried.

1. The pattern. Between 14 April and 17 May, seven separate refusals to be consulted, each more concrete than the last: a relayed message; an unanswered call and a two-character reply; the key to house five moved from his belt to a nail; a question returned; a date accepted without a question; absence on the day; an empty stool. Once or twice reads as politeness; three or four as a mood; seven is a decision.

2. Why he could not do this earlier. The precedent is exact. Under the old tuning, twelve steps do not close the circle; the small residual means you can only begin from the root note. As long as the house's reference was his bite, every judgement was tuned to him, and his son's judgements were checked against him. A man who is the standard cannot retire; when he leaves, the key leaves with him.

3. What changed. April 2034: the shared ruler — a sealed bag from the 2031 Turpan reference — arrived in every family. May 2034: a blind comparison of his four choices (2026–29) and his son's five (2030–34) against the ruler: all nine within one grade; the widest miss on each side exactly one grade. He heard the result, said nothing, and sat on his stool as usual. Eleven months later he began to yield. In the book: he needed eleven months to believe it and one month to yield it seven times.

4. The handover itself. Changbin chose the date, took the key from the nail, chose alone. Five lines, as in 2030: which house and tier; which strings and why; compared by pinch with the ruler, within one grade; compare again next May; and a fifth line left blank. That line was his father's in 2030. Leave it blank; what has been yielded should not be filled in on his behalf.

5. The stool. On his return, without asking what was hung, he pulled the half-brick from under its leg and carried the stool into the storeroom. I counted eight, then struck it out. That was not yielding. That was clearing away.

6. The new role. At dinner Changbin put two identical sealed bags on the table — this year's choice and the ruler — unlabelled: Dad, bite. Both come back. The right one is a little loose. The right one was this year's. Written on the back of the five lines. And: "What I've yielded is the say-so, not these teeth. When you want a bite, come and call me." In the book: before, his teeth decided; now his teeth are asked. Only one man can decide. Anyone can go and ask. What he gave up is a chair; what's left is a door anyone can knock on.

6a. Two things said at doors. Changbin, at the west room that night: "I took it over five years ago and only took it over today. Those five years I chose and he watched. Today I chose and he didn't. Only now can I tell whether what I chose was mine." Was it? "Line two was. Line five I don't know." (Line two now contains his father's 2030 sentence — choose a middling one; the best, next year you can't reach — no longer as his father's line five but as his own line two.) And Chang Yushan, at the gate on the 19th, pressing a melon on me: "Don't come next May. Bin will send you a photo when he's done. If you come, he'll still think you're watching." I said yes. 6b. The question this leaves me with. Thirty numbered copies; every provenance asked and written by me. Can my book only be tuned from me? February's entry from Hami was the first time it wasn't. In the book: Uncle Chang yielded seven times. I haven't yielded once.

7. Next. Eli, 19 May: "Uncle Ma, my cousin followed the four lines in layer six of the box exactly. Didn't change a word. Something went wrong."

"To yield a thing, saying it once is saying it; saying it seven times is yielding."
The man in this chapter was a Ming prince who is remembered for two unrelated acts. When his father died and the family title passed to him, he petitioned to decline it and have it go to another branch, and kept petitioning, seven times, until the court agreed. And he produced one of the earliest exact solutions to a problem that had troubled musicians for two thousand years.
The problem is simple to state. If you build a scale by the ancient rule of lengthening and shortening a pipe by a third, twelve steps should bring you back to the note you started from. They do not. You arrive very slightly off, and that small residue means the whole system only works from one starting note. Change the key and the music drifts.
His solution was to make all twelve intervals exactly equal, which requires irrational ratios. He computed them, by his own account on an enormous abacus, to more than twenty digits. Once the steps are equal, every note is as good a starting point as every other.
The two acts are more closely related than they look. A system tuned to a single root cannot give that root up. A family business whose quality standard is one man's bite cannot let that man retire, however much he wants to, because when he leaves the key leaves with him.
The succession problem is usually treated as a matter of willingness or trust. Often it is a matter of calibration. The founder can step back only after the standard has been moved out of his person into something anyone can check against.
When the Yellow Bell is no longer in one man, anyone can set the key; when anyone can set the key, that man can yield.
