English Mirror: The Lei family models were made of pasteboard, sorghum stalk, wax and thin wood, heat-pressed into shape — which is how they got their name, the ironed models.* — Platform and tiled roof, columns and tie-beams, doors and windows, partitions and painted work: each to scale, and the scales were distinguished as the half-inch, the inch, the two-inch and the four-tenths. — The method: every layer lifts off. Take away the roof and the beam-frame is there; take away the beam-frame and the inner partitions are there; take that away and the floor and the column-bases are there — every one of them true to the thing. — From the first of them the family held the office of the design hall for eight generations, over two hundred years, and what survives of their drawings, models and daily work-journals runs to more than twenty thousand items. — The dynastic history says of the founder only: he answered the call for craftsmen.

Ninth of May, 2034. I am thirty-seven. What I hold: six heads and twenty-one classes, two hundred and forty-five cards; thirty copies of the third edition, thirty-one entries in the main text; five households' references, three copies each; a box of physical samples from 2031 to 2033; and eighteen entries in the twenty-first class. That evening I tried to write something. Title: if I am not here tomorrow, who can carry this on. Two hours, six pages. I read it back and stopped on page three, at a sentence I had written very clearly: the households' grades must be compared against the five bags first. — And the reader does not know where those five bags are. Nor which year, nor which house they came out of, nor why that batch. I know all of it. I had not written down one word of it.
Tenth of May, reread, asking after each sentence: what must the reader already have in hand for this to be usable? Page one, three sentences: all three need the five bags. Page two, four: three need a hanging reference. Page three, six: all six need physical objects. Twenty-seven sentences over six pages. Two of them can be acted on without holding anything — pass a reply back within three days and pick the reference three times.* The other twenty-five are instructions for a thing I did not enclose.
Lei Fada came on the eleventh. Sixties, short jacket, a few small tools through his belt — a very small plane, a bamboo rule, a pair of shears. Cuts on his hands, several, all fine ones. He was carrying a model of a building, a foot square, made of pasteboard: tiles, columns, windows, all of it finely done. He set it on the table and, without speaking, lifted the roof off. Under the roof: the beam-frame, every beam actually made. He lifted again: the inner partitions. Again: the floor and the column-bases. Then he looked up: those six pages of yours are a drawing.
He opened with a question. Have you seen a technical drawing? Yes. Can you read one? More or less. That is because you have seen buildings. And: a man who has never seen a building cannot get a building out of a drawing. What he sees is a heap of lines. He stacked the layers back. What we present to the throne cannot be a drawing. Why not? He does not read drawings. Flatly, with nothing implied. And he does not need to. And, and I picked up the pen: a thing made for someone who does not read drawings cannot be a drawing.
So — build a small house? Building a small house is not hard. The hard part is making it lift apart. Why must it? He lifted a layer again. Look at this beam. If I made it solid, the outside would look the same and the viewer would never know. And: but then the model is only an ornament. And: it cannot say how the building is standing up. And, six times into the book: lift a layer and find it still true — that is what makes the model worth anything. And: lift a layer and find it hollow, and it is a showpiece.
I said my work cannot be made small: it runs once a year; one turn takes a year. — Then make one turn. One turn is a year. A turn is not a year. A turn is a few objects, put in order. Those few objects added together are the year. And: put those objects in a box, in layers. Lift a layer and there is a real thing, not a sheet of paper. And: lift to the bottom, and the year is inside.
Last, his family. Eight generations at this. Two hundred years? Two hundred years. How was it handed on? Not by teaching. By working alongside. And: a son is in the room at seven or eight, passing things. At fourteen or fifteen he's shaving sorghum stalk. In his twenties he makes one layer. In his thirties he makes the whole thing. And if one generation doesn't want it? A pause. That happened. And: then that generation is carried by the one before it holding on a few more years. And, five times into the book: eight generations does not mean eight generations of people who wanted to do it. And: it means that in eight generations there were never two in a row who didn't. — M.
Memo to file. Chengdu / Kucha, 9 May – 2 September 2034. The box, and where a man who had never done it got stuck.
1. The test that started it. If I am not here tomorrow, who carries this on — six pages, and page three failed on its own terms: a perfectly clear instruction referring to objects the reader does not possess and whose provenance I never wrote down. Twenty-seven sentences; twenty-five require a physical object I did not enclose. The document was not a handover. It was a caption for things in my cupboard.
2. The principle, and it is about the recipient, not the medium. A drawing is legible only to someone who has already seen the thing drawn. A thing made for someone who does not read drawings cannot be a drawing. And the condition that makes a model more than decoration: lift a layer and what is underneath must still be true. A solid beam looks identical from outside and destroys the entire purpose, because the model can then no longer say how the building stands up.
3. What I built, 12 May – end of June. A wooden box, a foot and a half square, five layers, each under a board with writing on it. — I: five sewn bags, numbered 1–5. This is the ruler. House two, 2031. Do not open. — II: three identical sewn bags. One to the doorframe, one to the cupboard, one posted to another household. — III: a pen, blank cards, shears. Pick three times, one bag each, without looking at the previous. Nick the corner with the shears — one cut is the first pick. — IV: an empty notebook. Who, when, for whom, and whether there was a benefit at the time. — V: a letter, one page: where the box came from, and — this box is not teaching you how. Run one turn with it this year, put it back, and write your name on it.
4. Who I gave it to, 10 July, and why not Ali. Ali's third uncle, 42, houses five and six. Two reasons: he has never taken any part in this, and he is the least talkative of the three brothers. Three sentences on handing it over, the third being: wherever you can't go on, write one line on that layer's board saying where you're stuck. His only question: does this go back? At year end. To whom? — To the next person. Put it back, write your name on it, and whoever opens it next year sees your line first.
5. Where he stuck, reported 28 August, and it is the finding. "These three bags are identical. I can't tell which one is meant to go on the doorframe." He was stuck four days. He did not ask Ali and did not ask me. He wrote the line, then decided for himself: he hung the one with the tightest stitching.
6. My failure, exactly located. Layer two says one to the doorframe, one to the cupboard, one posted.* It does not say which one goes where — because in my head all three are identical and it cannot matter. That sentence lives in my head and not in the box. And: he did not get stuck at a hard place. He got stuck at the place I thought did not need saying.
7. Layer six, added 2 September, on top, first thing you see. One sheet: anything in this box that looks identical is identical; take whichever you like; and this line was added in 2034 because somebody was stuck here for four days. The date and the duration are there deliberately — by Wang Tao's rule this sentence needs a provenance too. And on the back, for whoever comes later: this layer will keep getting thicker. Every sentence added to it is somewhere a person got stuck. And: the day this layer is thicker than the five layers under it, the box is finished.

"Every layer lifts off."
The models were made of pasteboard, sorghum stalk, wax and thin wood, heat-pressed into shape, and built to fixed scales. What distinguishes them from architectural models generally is that they were made to be dismantled by the viewer. Take off the roof and the beam-frame is underneath, actually constructed. Take off the beam-frame and the interior partitions are there. Take those away and you have the floor and the column-bases.
The reason is stated plainly by the people who made them, and it is not about craftsmanship. The models existed because the person who had to approve the building did not read drawings and was not going to learn. A thing made for someone who does not read drawings cannot be a drawing.
A drawing is not a neutral record. It is a compressed notation that only decompresses inside a head that already contains the building. Show it to someone without that, and what arrives is a heap of lines.
The demanding part is the honesty of the interior. A beam made solid would look identical from outside and nobody would ever know — and the model would become an ornament, because it could no longer say how the building is standing up.
Lift a layer and find it still true: that is what makes the model worth anything. Lift a layer and find it hollow, and it is a showpiece.
The family held the post for eight generations and something over two hundred years, and the transmission was not instruction. A boy was in the workshop at seven passing tools, shaving stalk in his teens, making one layer in his twenties, the whole model in his thirties.
Asked what happened when a generation did not want the work, the answer is unsentimental and worth keeping:
Eight generations does not mean eight generations of people who wanted to do it. It means that in eight generations there were never two in a row who didn't.
