English Mirror: Piling up counters makes a solid. Since the sectional areas at corresponding heights are the same, the volumes cannot differ. — Piling up counters means setting pieces one on another to make a column; section is the face of a single layer; disposition* is the order of those layers from low to high. — Liu Hui, on the solid formed by two intersecting cylinders: Looking at what lies inside the cube and outside the joined canopy — though it tapers away by degrees, the more and the less do not cover one another. Split and joined, square and round entangled, thick and fine at odds, it cannot be made even and regular. I should like to give the shape a form in my mind, and I fear to lose the true principle. I dare not do otherwise than leave the doubt standing, and wait for one who can speak to it. — Of the book the Zu family wrote: the officers of the school could not fathom its depths, and so it was abandoned and not studied.

Eighteenth of November, 2033, Kucha. A year ago today the two households sealed the same year's cell — one Imin's, one Ali's — to be opened together on 18 November 2033. Imin set the date, and when he set it he said: the date has to be written down hard. And: if it isn't, when the time comes one household always says let's wait a bit. A table in Imin's yard, a white cloth over it, the two bags at opposite ends, both still sewn, neither opened. One in Imin's hand, one in Ali's — and on Ali's there is an extra line he added last year: my first cell.
Ten o'clock, opening. Imin picked the stitching out with a small knife, very slowly, and tipped his out on the cloth: forty-odd. Ali tipped out forty-four. Two heaps a foot apart. You look first. Ali bent over it about ten seconds, straightened up, and said: they're miles apart.
Zu Geng appeared under the yard wall. Thirties. A very clean plain robe. No book — a handful of counters in his hand, round, flat, wooden, all the same size. He squatted at the foot of the wall and began stacking them one on another into a column, which stood up steady. Then he looked at the two heaps on the table and said: the boy says they're miles apart, and what he means is this year's two bags. (I was in Chengdu with the phone on speaker.) Zu Geng. My father was Zu Chongzhi.
Imin said nothing at first. He picked one out of his own heap, put it back, and said: you say they're far apart. Far apart in what? Yours is hard, ours is soft. How far? Very far. "Very far" is not a number. So Ali squatted and pinched ten from each side, and then: yours, only our house three could produce. Ours is like our house one. — That counts as a number.
I asked whether the sealing had therefore been wasted. Not wasted. But the two don't match. Of course they don't match. And: the two families' houses are different. The soil is different, the wind is different, the people are different. It would be strange if they matched. Then why seal them? A pause, and then, and I picked up the pen: it isn't seal this year and compare this year. It's seal this year and compare next year against this year.
Zu Geng knocked his column over and built two. One straight. One crooked — each counter set on the edge of the one below, going up aslant. The same height. I said I couldn't see it, and he said listen. One is straight and one is crooked. The shapes are completely different. But they are the same height, and every layer uses a counter of the same size. And: therefore the two columns used the same number of counters. His twelve characters: piling up counters makes a solid; since the sectional areas at corresponding heights are the same, the volumes cannot differ. Section is the face of one layer; disposition is the order of the layers from low to high. And, six times into the book: then what those two things hold is not permitted to differ. And: not "roughly the same." Not permitted to differ.
The question I had been carrying two years: can the shapes be completely different? They can. One square, one round, one crooked. Any of them. And: so long as every layer corresponds. I said a man named Pei told me last year about the common bearing — right in your own corner, wrong the moment you join it to another — and I had taken that to mean that to join up, every household must first be made the same. — No. Flatly. Making every household the same is the stupidest method. And it cannot be done. And, five times into the book: you do not have to make the two columns look alike. You only have to make every layer correspond. And: one layer is one year.
Last, he gave the credit away. This wasn't mine first. Whose? Liu Hui's. He wanted the volume of a sphere and invented a solid for it — two cylinders crossed, and the piece where they intersect. Did he get it? No. And: he wrote a passage saying it is square and round entangled, thick and fine at odds, that it cannot be made even and regular, and that he feared that by forcing a shape on it he would lose the true principle. And: what he finally wrote was: I dare not do otherwise than leave the doubt standing, and wait for one who can speak to it. Leave the question open and wait for someone who can. Yes. And: he wrote that before I was born. And, six times into the book: the box he left empty, I filled two hundred years later. And: if he had forced a number into it at the time, there would have been nothing left for me to fill. — M.
Memo to file. Kucha (by phone) / Chengdu, 18–20 November 2033. The two bags did not match, and that is the correct result.
1. What happened. Two households opened cells sealed a year ago on the same day. Imin's heap is hard; Ali's is soft; by Ali's own calibration they are about two of his family's houses apart. Ali's first reaction: they're miles apart — i.e., the exercise failed.
2. Why it did not fail, stated by a man who cannot read. It isn't seal this year and compare this year. It's seal this year and compare next year against this year. The comparison was never between the two bags. It is between two differences — how much Imin's 2034 differs from his 2033, and how much Ali's 2034 differs from his 2033. Those two numbers are commensurable even though the bags are not.
3. The licence for that, which I have been missing since April 2032. Zu Geng's principle: two solids of completely different shape contain the same volume if every corresponding layer has the same section. You do not have to make the households alike. You have to make the layers correspond — and one layer is one year. This corrects my reading of Pei Xiu. I had taken common bearing to mean everyone must be standardized. Making every household the same is both the stupidest method and impossible. What has to be shared is not the practice; it is the slicing.
4. Why nothing is comparable this year, in one line. A difference needs two points. This year each household has one point. One point does not make a line. Marked with a triangle for verification on 18 November 2034: two households, two points each, two differences — the first genuinely comparable quantity this network will have produced.
5. The asymmetry, and why it is smaller than it looks. Imin is 68 and has 42 years of filled cells — 42 differences on his own. Ali is 16 and will have his first difference next year. But those 42 have never once been compared to anybody else's. Forty-two self-referential differences are one line, and one line cannot tell whether it is crooked. Ali's single difference next year is a second line. One against forty-two sounds lopsided; in forty-two years there has never been a second line at all.*
6. What the two of them did with the opened bags, which I did not suggest. Neither mixed nor discarded. Each bag split in half and swapped, resealed, labelled in Ali's hand: 2032. This half is the other family's. Keep it; compare against our own next year.
7. And what Imin did with his half on the 20th, which is the finding. He did not put it into his wall of fifty-one cells. He nailed it to the wall outside the grid. His reason, relayed: those fifty-one cells are one cell per year, forty-two years, and all of it is one man's. And: mix in one bag from another household and those forty-two years can no longer be accounted for. And: he nailed it outside because he couldn't bring himself to throw it away either. A man who cannot read arrived at exactly Jia Dan's two-ink solution and executed it in nails: the new thing goes next to the old record, touching it, not absorbed into it.
8. The methodological note I want on record, from Liu Hui via Zu Geng. He could not solve the intersecting-cylinder solid and wrote that he feared forcing a shape on it would lose the true principle, and closed with leave the doubt standing and wait for one who can speak to it. It was filled about two centuries later. If he had forced a number in, there would have been nothing left to fill. Third time this year the same rule has come round — 阙 (March 2032), the bounded blank (March 2033), and now this. I am treating it as settled practice rather than as an insight.*

"Piling up counters makes a solid. Since the sectional areas at corresponding heights are the same, the volumes cannot differ."
Twelve characters, preserved in a commentary, and the thing they license is larger than it first appears. Two objects may be entirely unlike — one upright, one leaning, one square, one round. If you slice both at every height and the slices match, then the two contain exactly the same amount.
Note what is not required. Not that the objects resemble each other. Not that they were made the same way. Not even that you can see both at once. The comparison is performed layer by layer, and the layers carry the whole argument.
And note the strength of the claim. It does not say the volumes will be approximately equal, or equal for practical purposes. The volumes are not permitted to differ.
The other half of the story belongs to the man two centuries earlier who could not finish it. Wanting the volume of a sphere, he constructed the solid formed where two cylinders cross at right angles, and then found he could not measure it. What he wrote about the failure is unusually exact about its own limits: the thing is square and round entangled, thick and fine at odds, it cannot be made even and regular, and he feared that by forcing a shape onto it in his mind he would lose the true principle.
So he stopped, and wrote the sentence the later solution depends on:
"I dare not do otherwise than leave the doubt standing, and wait for one who can speak to it."
Two hundred years is a long wait, and the waiting was only possible because the gap had been left visibly open and correctly described. A plausible wrong answer in that place would have closed the question, and closed it in a way that looked settled.
There is a postscript worth keeping beside it. The book in which the later proof appeared was, a few generations on, beyond the officers of the school, who could not fathom its depths, and so it was abandoned and not studied — and lost.
