*English Mirror: In the early years of the dynasty there was an old woman called Huang Daopo, who came from Yazhou. — And she taught them how to make the tools for ginning, bowing, spinning and weaving; and as for setting the yarn and matching the colours, and threading the heddles to raise a pattern, each of these had its own method. — So the quilts and coverlets and sashes and kerchiefs they wove, with sprays of flowers and phoenixes in the round and chessboard squares and characters upon them, came out bright and clear as though they had been written. — Once the people had been taught, they vied with one another in the making, and traded it on to other prefectures, and the households grew prosperous. — Not long after, the old woman died, and there was not one who did not weep in gratitude, and they buried her together. And they built a shrine for her and made offerings at the season; and after thirty years the shrine fell down. — Huang Daopo was a woman of Wujing in Song prefecture. In her youth she drifted away to Yazhou, and in the Yuanzhen years she came back with a sea-going ship.

Sixteenth of September, 2033, Ürümqi. I was not meant to be here. I was changing planes — Kucha back to Chengdu, six hours in between. Six hours is enough for one thing. The night before, Alim sent an address. Just the address, no explanation. What is this? My sister's shop. Your sister has a shop? Six years. Four characters, and I sat in the airport with them a long while. Six years. I have known this family four. Alim mentioned a sister in Ürümqi once, in August 2031: my sister's in Ürümqi, she isn't coming back. Nothing after it. And I didn't ask.
Ten in the morning, a narrow street, next to a nan bakery. Twelve or fifteen square metres. Six open sacks at the door — raisins, dried apricots, almonds, walnuts — each with a small card stuck in it, cut from stiff paper, the price in handwriting. Gul is twenty-nine. She was weighing something for an old woman, looked up, and said in very clear Mandarin: you're Marco. Alim told you. He told me yesterday. She handed over the bag and counted the change, and only when the old woman had gone: he's been telling me for four years.
Huang Daopo appeared in the doorway. Sixties, maybe seventy. Not tall, very thin. Coarse cloth, and trousers of the kind you can work in, not a skirt. Hard hands, callus at the web of the thumb and over the knuckles. In one hand a shuttle — wooden, pointed at both ends, polished bright in the middle. She did not come in. She looked at the six open sacks for about half a minute and said: she's put the cheapest one on the outside. And when I turned: Huang Daopo. I'm not a Huang. Huang was my husband's family's name, and "Daopo" is what people called me later.
Gul's six years. Came to Ürümqi at twenty-three; minded a stall in a dried-fruit wholesale market for two years; took this shop at twenty-five. And: the first year I sold other people's goods. Why not your own family's? My father wouldn't give me any. Flatly. And: he said a girl opening a shop is playing at it. And: play for two years and she'll come home. And then? The third year he gave me some. Why the third? — Because in the third year I didn't come home.
How much do you sell now? About twelve hundred catties of raisins a year. — I bought nine hundred in the whole of Turpan this year. All your family's? Four-tenths. The other six-tenths are other people's. We can't produce that much. How do you choose other people's? She took a notebook out from under the counter — old, soft-covered, corners worn round — put it on the counter without opening it, and said: I don't choose goods. And: I choose, then I sell, then I write it down.
Huang Daopo, beside me: ask her what she writes. So I asked, and Gul opened it and turned the pages. Uyghur, written very close, every line starting with a date. I cannot read it. She read some out: — 12 August, a woman, said this is too sweet, the last lot was better. — 14 August, a young man, bought two taels, came back next day to return it, said it tasted bitter. — 17 August, an old man, said this is the same as when he was small. — 19 August, a woman, bought half a catty for her child, asked whether there were smaller ones. She stopped a few pages in. Six years. Over ten thousand entries.
I stood at that counter a long time without speaking. Four years of asking the people who grow it: two hundred-odd findings. Six years of a twenty-nine-year-old writing down the people who buy it: over ten thousand. What do you keep them for? Next time I buy in. And: somebody says bitter, and I know not to take that family's lot again. And: somebody says the small ones are better, and next time I tell them I want small. Have you told the growers any of this? Yes. Do they listen? No. Just as flatly. And: they say, what would a shopkeeper know.
Her own account then. I left home in my teens. Where to? Yazhou. Across the sea. Why? Running. One word, and no more of it. I was there thirty years. And: the Li people there could weave — ginning, bowing, spinning, weaving, and every one of them had a method. And: back home they couldn't. And: back home they were bowing cotton with a little bamboo bow a foot long. Over there they used a four-foot bow. Five times the output in a day. And you went back? After thirty years, on a sea-going ship.
Then the question I had been holding. When you got back, did they believe you? She looked at me a while. Not at first. And: a woman gone thirty years comes home and tells you your way of bowing cotton is wrong. Would you? So how did they come to believe it? I didn't say anything. She lifted the shuttle. I made a bow. A four-foot one. And when it was made I bowed cotton in the yard for a day. And, and I picked up the pen: and I put what I had done in a day next to what they had done in a day. And: nobody asked me how many years I'd spent in Yazhou. — M.
Memo to file. Ürümqi, 16–17 September 2033. The sixth station has existed for six years and I never counted it.
1. Facts. Gul, 29, Alim's sister. Shop in Ürümqi since she was 25; six years trading. Turnover ~1,200 catties of raisins a year — more than the 900 I bought in the whole of Turpan this season. Four-tenths from her own family, six-tenths bought in from other households she selects herself.
2. What she keeps, and it is not what any of us keep. A soft-covered notebook, six years, over ten thousand dated entries — every one a record of what a buyer said. Too sweet. Tasted bitter, returned next day. The same as when I was small. Do you have smaller ones. Four years of my work has recorded the people who grow it. Six years of hers has recorded the people who eat it.
3. Why this matters under the rule from 208. Independent measurements combine only if they share no common factor. Every one of my five households is in the field, and I have touched every one of their methods — I bought the thermometers, I specified the tables, I imposed the shared bags. I have not influenced one word of her six years. She is in a different place in the chain, measuring a different thing, with an instrument I did not supply. She is the first genuinely independent modulus this system has.*
4. And she has already been ignored by exactly the people who need her. She has told growers what her buyers say. They say: what would a shopkeeper know. The information has been available in Ürümqi for six years and has never crossed the last two hundred kilometres.
5. Why I cannot simply copy the notebook, and she is right about this. I asked. You can't copy it. Because: not one line in it is complete. She showed me an entry reading that woman. Which woman? She comes twice a month, lives on the third floor, her grandson doesn't eat sweet things — none of which is written down. Copy the line and you get a sentence. She reads the line and sees the person. The notebook is an index into her memory, not a dataset. Extracting it would destroy exactly the part that makes it work — the same failure as reading Luo's twelve clauses aloud.*
6. What I asked for instead, and what she answered. One sewn bag a year: the string she thinks it most ought to be like, kept under her own counter, not posted to anyone, opened by her in ten years to see how far she has moved. And: this notebook is that. And: six years ago on the first page I wrote "this is too sour." Back then I thought a customer saying sour meant the goods were sour. And: now I know half the people who say sour have bad teeth. And the line I wrote down: nobody ever told me it counted as a thing.
7. The correction to the 2033 plan. December's line read: the sixth household isn't one I recruited — it's Imin and Ali keeping the same year. Struck out. New: The sixth is in Ürümqi. Twenty-nine, six years, ten thousand entries, recording the buyers. My two hundred record the growers. The two books do not reconcile because they are not measuring the same thing. And: she is not the sixth household. She is the first one who is not on my side of the chain.
8. Alim, by phone on the 17th, asked why the address only came yesterday. A long silence, then: I thought it didn't count. What didn't? Running a shop isn't doing this trade. And: in our family the people doing this trade are my father and me. And: my sister sells things. I put it to him that his family produces about 1,300 catties a year and his sister sells about 1,200; that his father hung fruit for forty years and knows what the goods should be; that his sister has sold for six and knows what people say after they have eaten it; and that neither of those is "selling things" — they are the two ends. Long silence. Then, and he hung up after it: Uncle Luo's book is called The Two Ends. I've been reading it two years. I always thought the two ends were the two ends of the goods.
9. The precedent, and the part of it I want to keep. Thirty years away, and on returning she did not argue. She built a four-foot bow, bowed cotton in the yard for a day, and set her day's work beside theirs. And: nobody asked how many years she had spent away. Applied: do not ask the growers to accept ten thousand customer complaints. Put one year's worth of her selections beside one year's worth of theirs and let the two piles sit next to each other.

"And she taught them how to make the tools for ginning, bowing, spinning and weaving."
The account is brief and oddly complete. A woman of a village near the sea drifts away in her youth to an island far to the south — the text gives no reason and she gives one word for it — and lives there some thirty years among people whose textile technique is far ahead of her birthplace's. Then, in her sixties, she takes a ship home.
What she brought back was not cloth. It was equipment and method: the gin that separates seed from fibre, a bow four feet long where her village was still using one about a foot, the multi-spindle wheel, and the practices for setting yarn, matching colour, and threading the heddles to raise a pattern. Within a generation the district was supplying other prefectures and the households had grown prosperous.
The part worth dwelling on is what happened when she first got back, because the obvious problem is obvious. A woman absent thirty years returns and says the village's way of doing its principal work is wrong. There is no reason for anyone to listen, and by the account they did not.
She did not argue the point. She built one four-foot bow, spent a day using it, and set the result next to a day's work done the old way.
And nobody asked her how many years she had been away.
The record ends with two sentences that are usually quoted separately and belong together. When she died, there was not one who did not weep in gratitude, and they buried her together, and they built a shrine and made offerings there at the season.
And after thirty years the shrine fell down.
The technique outlasted the gratitude by a wide margin, which is the ordinary way of it. The looms were still working in that district for centuries. The building put up to remember the person lasted about as long as the people who had actually met her.
