English Mirror: Nobody under heaven who undertakes work can do without a standard. There has never been a case of work succeeding without one. Even the officer who becomes general or minister has a standard; even the hundred craftsmen at their trades all have standards. — The hundred craftsmen make the square by the try-square, the circle by the compass, the straight by the cord, the upright by the plumb line, the level by water. Skilled craftsman or unskilled, all five serve alike as standard. The skilled can hit it exactly; the unskilled, though they cannot hit it, still do better by working in reliance on it than they would by themselves.
Dongpo's Note
Tenth of March, nine in the morning. Opening day is pulling the mud brick out of the doorways, six houses one at a time. Chang Bin on the crowbar, Chang with the same small spade. Wind off the west, hard enough to take the skin off.
House five is a different building now. Double steel door with insulation board between the leaves, a control box on the wall beside it, a small dark screen on the box. Chang Bin: signed off on the first of March. Chiller fifty-eight thousand, civil works and electrical thirty-one. Eighty-nine altogether. Whose money? Mine. Six years' saving in Ürümqi. I didn't ask my father. Chang was taking down the doorway of house two with his back to us, stacking the bricks very square. He said nothing at all.
Halfway through the doorway he stopped, reached inside the frame, and took the string down. Two seconds. He didn't look at it and he didn't say anything. Left hand holding it, right hand back on the bricks. Chang Bin was at house three with his back turned and did not see it. I made a decision in that second, stepped back and called him over.
Mozi came in the afternoon while they were in town fetching seedlings, and I was alone in house five — no wall holes, insulation board on four sides, steel racking in tiers with a ladder and a handrail, six vents in the ceiling, and quiet enough to hear my own ears. Fifty or so, coarse black cloth, calloused hands, and hung at his waist: a try-square, a compass, a coil of cord, a plumb-bob, a small level. He felt the steel frame first. This was made from a drawing. Yes. Things made from drawings are made well. And: Mo Di.
He unhooked all five and laid them on the rack, naming each as he pushed it forward an inch. The square by the try-square. The circle by the compass. The straight by the cord. The upright by the plumb line. The level by water. Five in a row. Every craftsman under heaven, clever-handed or clumsy, uses these five. The clever ones too? The clever ones use them less. But they use them. Why? Because he is clever today and tomorrow he is tired and not clever.
Does a clumsy man become skilled by using them? No. Flat. The skilled can hit it exactly. The unskilled cannot hit it. A pause, and then the seven characters: working in reliance on it, he still does better than himself. Meaning? Following this, he won't be as accurate. But he beats himself working blind. And, three times into the book: these five of mine are not for clever men. They are for every clumsy man under heaven.
I told him what I'd seen that morning: last year's string on the doorframe; feel it, then feel the rack, and you know. That is a compass. Instantly, without thinking. It has hung there thirty-one years. Then it is a good one. It has one fault. What fault? It has no name.
He didn't answer at once. He squared the five tools up a little more neatly and then said: square, cord, plumb-line — for these three characters, which came first, the thing or the word? The thing. Yes. The things existed for centuries before the words did. And, and I stood up: once there is a word, a second person can carry it away.
Last, and he did not say how he knew: you were right to send the son over to look this morning. But looking is not enough. What else? A sentence. And it cannot be the father's sentence. Why not? He can't get it out of his mouth. A man who has done a thing thirty-one years sounds like he is boasting. Hooking the five back onto his belt: an outsider has to say it once out loud, and then those two can each nod. — M.
Marco's Memo
Memo to file. Turpan, 10 March 2030. Opening day. Chang 64 next month; Chang Bin 31.
1. House five, as built. ¥89,000 total — chiller ¥58,000, civil + electrical ¥31,000 — against the ¥324,000 six-house scheme. Funded entirely from Chang Bin's own savings; he did not take money from his father, and he did not tell me he wasn't going to. Houses one to four and six untouched, as agreed: five controls against one treatment, benchmarked not against each other but each against its own thirty-one-year history.
2. The handover, which took four minutes and which I engineered and am going to write down honestly. — Chang took the string down in two seconds with his back to his son, who did not see it. In thirty-one years the son has never seen the moment. — I called him over and asked the father for the string. He raised his left hand and did not hand it over. "Look at what." I said I wanted Chang Bin to feel it. His hand stopped in mid-air for about three seconds, and then he passed it — to me, not to his son. I passed it across. — Both hands, one string each: which is harder? The left. How much? Almost no give. The right one goes in a bit. — Then I said the rule out loud, to the father, as a question: before you take fruit down you feel this string, then the rack; same hardness, it comes down; still soft, it waits. Is that right? *— He put the brick down, wiped his hands on his trousers, and said one syllable: 对. And then added something I did not have: "and the colour. Compare it to that too. Everything is compared to that." Mozi's point exactly: the sentence could not come from the father, because from him it sounds like boasting. It had to come from an outsider so that the two of them could each nod at it.
3. And then the son did something nobody asked him to. He took out a new notebook — blue hard cover, identical to his father's thirty-one, bought last month in the county town — knelt at the doorway of house two with it on his knee and the wind flattening the page, and wrote five lines: (i) a string of last year's hangs inside the doorframe; (ii) taken down at opening, replaced at closing; (iii) before taking fruit down, feel this then the rack — same hardness, take it down; (iv) compare colour to it as well; (v) — dictated over his father's shoulder without his father turning round — choose a middling string, never the best one: "pick the best and next year you can't reach it." Thirty-one years, four minutes. And line five is the one I could never have got, because I did not know the standard could drift upward until he said it.*
4. Note on line five, which is a real piece of engineering. A self-regenerating reference has a failure mode: if each year's reference is drawn from the top of that year's batch, the standard ratchets up until it is unreachable and the operator starts overriding it. Chang's answer is to sample the middle, not the maximum. He has been anti-ratcheting a control standard for thirty years and has never had a word for it.
5. The refusal at dusk, and it is not stubbornness. The screen on house five lit green with temperature and humidity. Chang looked at it for two seconds, stepped back, and said "I don't look at that" — then, unprompted: "I'm not saying I can't read numbers." Walking away, over his shoulder: "What comes out of this one, I'm not hanging that string for it." Chang Bin asked me what he meant. The string's standard is "last year's accepted batch," and last year's accepted batch is six earth houses, the same wind and the same sun. What house five produces this year is not in that batch. There is nothing to compare it against. To give house five a reference you must start a separate string for house five — and starting a separate string is conceding that these are two different goods. He is not refusing. He has no first string. A self-regenerating standard cannot bootstrap itself: year one of any new process has no year zero.
6. Which is now the actual problem of 2030, and it is mine as much as theirs. Somebody has to declare, once, by judgement and not by comparison, what an acceptable batch out of house five looks like — and then that declaration becomes the ancestor of every string hung in that house forever. Chang will not do it: he does not consider the output his family's goods. Chang Bin cannot do it: he has no hand for it and knows he hasn't. Which leaves the possibility that it falls to me, and I want it on the record now, before March is out, that I am not qualified and I am the most likely person to end up doing it anyway.
7. Books, briefly, since this is the first entry of 2030. 2029 closed at 1,637 bags across four runs (620 apricot, 500 mulberry, 517 raisin) against 393 in 2028. Gross margin ¥17,598; consulting ¥8,000; refunds −¥123; costs ¥96,000. Net −¥70,525. Bank 178,000 → 111,000. Runway unchanged: about February 2031. Four times the volume, and the cash line moved in the same direction it moved last year. Growth is not the constraint and never was.

"These five of mine are not for clever men. They are for every clumsy man under heaven."
The craftsman had them hanging at his waist and laid them out one at a time, naming each as he set it down: the square by the try-square, the circle by the compass, the straight by the cord, the upright by the plumb line, the level by water. And then the claim that makes the list a philosophy rather than a toolkit: every craftsman under heaven, clever-handed or clumsy, uses these five.
Even the clever ones? The clever ones use them less. But they use them. Because he is clever today, and tomorrow he is tired and not clever.
Does the clumsy man become skilled by using them? Flatly, no. The skilled can hit it exactly. The unskilled cannot hit it. And then the seven characters that are the entire argument: working in reliance on it, he still does better than himself. Not as good as the master. Better than he would be working blind. That is the whole promised return, and it is enough to have organised the crafts of a civilisation.
He was told about a string of last year's fruit hanging inside a doorframe, felt with one hand against the rack in the other. That is a compass — instantly, without hesitation. It has hung there thirty-one years. Then it is a good one. It has one fault. What fault? It has no name.
He squared his five tools up a little and asked a question instead of answering. Square, cord, plumb line — which came first, the thing or the word? The thing. Yes. The things existed for centuries before the words did. And then: once there is a word, a second person can carry it away.
There was one more instruction, about who was to supply the word, and it turned on something other than knowledge. You were right to send the son to look. But looking is not enough. It needs a sentence, and it cannot be the father's sentence. Why not? He can't get it out of his mouth. A man who has done a thing for thirty-one years sounds like he is boasting.
An outsider has to say it once out loud, and then those two can each nod.
