English Mirror: A man of Ying had a speck of plaster on the tip of his nose, thin as a fly's wing, and had Carpenter Shi chop it off. Carpenter Shi swung his axe with a noise like wind, chopped by ear alone, took the plaster clean away without harming the nose — and the man of Ying stood there without a change of expression. — Lord Yuan of Song heard of it and summoned him: try it for me. Carpenter Shi said: I could indeed once do that. But the man who stood for me has been dead a long time. — Since my master died I have had nobody to stand for me. I have had nobody to talk to.
Dongpo's Note
The dirt track is there and the red brick wall is there, and the stacks of flattened board are not. The yard is empty and the July sun on the concrete is white enough to hurt.
Inside the workshop is empty too. The corrugator has gone; there are four bolt holes in the floor and a ring of black oil round them. I stood in the middle and said his name to see what would happen, and there was an echo. Last August I read notebooks aloud in that room for three days and there was no echo at all, because the room was full of board.
He was in the partitioned office, packing. The steel cabinet standing open, all four shelves bare, and three cartons on the floor with their flaps up — eleven books, twelve books, eleven books. Thirty-four. He straightened up. You're three days late. What was three days ago? They took the machine.
In May the owner sold the land; the whole strip is going to be warehousing. The factory is not relocating. The machines were sold — two of them, to a plant in Zhangye, a hundred and ten thousand for the pair. And him? I'm sixty. Flatly. Birthday in April.
Is there a pension? There is. Twenty-six years of contributions. Two thousand eight hundred a month. Enough? Enough. There's only me. And: my wife went the year before last — said quickly, and he bent back over the cartons, and I did not answer; I squatted down and helped fold the flaps.
Two kilometres east, sixth floor, no lift, one bedroom and a sitting room. Three cartons, two trips. Against the wall a cupboard two metres high, four shelves, the top two full of oddments and the bottom two empty. He stacked the thirty-four in one by one, and they filled a shelf and a half. He stood back and looked at them. In the factory they took four shelves. And: here they take one and a half.
Zhuangzi was in the doorway at dusk while he was out buying vegetables — very thin, fifty or so, patched coarse cloth, straw sandals, nothing in his hands. That shelf and a half. Yes. Zhuang Zhou.
*The carpenter, told as though he had thought of it on the road. A man of Ying with a speck of plaster on the tip of his nose, thin as a fly's wing, who had a carpenter named Shi chop it off. He swung the axe with a noise like wind. He didn't look. He listened. One stroke; the plaster gone; the nose untouched. And the man? Standing there. His expression didn't even change.
Then the Lord of Song heard, and summoned the carpenter, and told him to do it for him. Did he? No. He said one sentence. — I could indeed once do that. And: but the man who stood for me has been dead a long time.
What does that word mean? The one who stands there and lets you swing. I said the axe is still there and so is the hand. They are. Then why can't he? Go and find a man, have him stand still, and swing an axe at his nose. Perfectly level. The moment he flinches it's over. And: it is not that the carpenter has lost it. And then: this craft was always a thing between two people. One who swings and one who stands still. Take away either and the craft is gone.
And his own occasion for telling it: I told that at a funeral. Whose? Hui Shi's. And: we argued our whole lives. Whatever I said he contradicted. The fish on the bridge — I said the fish are happy and he said you are not a fish, how do you know; and I said you are not me, how do you know I don't know. And: thousands of exchanges like that, over a lifetime. Did it tire you? No. And: I only found out it hadn't tired me when he died.
And from the doorway: since he went I have had nobody to talk to. — M.
Marco's Memo
Memo to file. Jiayuguan, 8 July 2029.
1. The factory is gone. Land sold in May for warehousing; two machines sold to a Zhangye plant for ¥110,000; no relocation. He turned sixty in April. Pension ¥2,800/month on twenty-six years of contributions; living alone since his wife died the year before last. The thirty-four notebooks took four shelves of a steel cabinet in the office and one and a half shelves of a cupboard in a sixth-floor flat.
2. What he actually lost, which is not the job. Zhuangzi's carpenter could take a fly's-wing of plaster off a man's nose by ear, and refused to repeat it for a ruler: I could indeed once do that. But the man who stood for me has been dead a long time. And: this craft was always a thing between two people. One who swings and one who stands still. Take away either and the craft is gone. Qin's thirty years of breakage records exist because sixty-one firms out of two hundred and thirteen used the column. Without those sixty-one there is no series, no finding, and nothing in the cupboard but paper. He did not lose the machines. He lost the sixty-one.
3. And he said so himself before I could, and better. When I put a price on his time: too much. Two minutes a sheet; his factory wage was ¥5,800 a month over eight-hour days — four mao a minute. I said I was not buying two minutes, I was buying thirty years. I know what you're buying. But the thirty years are not mine alone. — In those thirty years, sixty-one firms talked to me. Without those sixty-one my thirty-four books are empty. — If you're paying, those sixty-one should have a share. — But they can't be found.
4. Terms, and he negotiated the price down, not up. I offered ¥200 a sheet, twelve a year, ¥2,400. He said ¥50. Settled at ¥100 — ¥1,200 a year. And then: I don't want the twelve hundred in cash. What then? Send me that table every year. — The 213-firm table I produced last August: tenure by firm, complaints by firm. I said he already has it: two pages, folded into his shirt pocket. I have it. He fetched it from the bedroom — folded in four, furred at the edges — spread it on the table and said: I've looked at it a lot this year. What for? I count the sixty-one. And: of the sixty-one, I can still put a face to fifty-three. And: last year it was fifty-something and I never counted it properly. This year I did. It's fifty-three. And: I'll count again next year.
5. Which tells me what the fee is actually buying and it is not his judgement. He has converted a table I made for him into an annual instrument for measuring his own memory. Fifty-three of sixty-one, and he intends to watch the number go down. What he asked to be paid in is the thing that lets him keep counting. A man who has lost the sixty-one has kept the only artefact in which they still exist, and wants a fresh copy every year — not for new information, since the table will not change, but because receiving it annually is an event, and the event is the counting. Note against ch.152's memo, where I wrote that I should not accept his books and should instead ask for something he still does. He has answered that himself, and what he still does is count faces against a list.
6. And the professional question underneath, which I have not solved. I hired him to read the consignment sheet and say one sentence. Justification given to him: in May, six of a hundred bags reported hardness, and I found the cause — ground floor, on the concrete, ten days — by investigation. He would have seen it. But that is a claim I cannot test, because his craft was in cartons and mine is in dried fruit, and the thing that made him good was not knowledge of paperboard. It was thirty years of one particular feedback loop. A feedback loop is not portable. The person who was trained by one might be. Twelve sheets this year will tell me. If he says nothing useful in twelve, that is a real answer and I will record it.
7. Zhuangzi at Hui Shi's grave, which is the second half of the same idea. A lifetime of argument — whatever I said he contradicted — thousands of exchanges. Did it tire you? No. I only found out it hadn't tired me when he died. And: since he went I have had nobody to talk to. Filed with: the man who stands still is not the assistant. He is half the craft. And the uncomfortable extension, which applies to me and not to Qin: I have been treating myself as the one who swings. Every ledger I have read this year I have read as the reader of somebody else's record. On this account I am the other one — the one who stands still so that somebody else's thirty years can be exercised — and that role has no output of its own and cannot be sold, and is nonetheless half of everything that has worked.
English Highlight
"I could indeed once do that. But the man who stood for me has been dead a long time."
The trick was this. A man had a speck of plaster on the tip of his nose, no thicker than a fly's wing, and a carpenter took it off with an axe — swung with a noise like wind, aimed by ear rather than by eye, the plaster gone and the nose untouched. And the man stood there without a change of expression.
A ruler who heard about it sent for the carpenter and asked him to do it again. He declined, and the reason he gave was not modesty and not superstition. The man who stood for me is dead.
The axe is still there. The hand is still there. What is missing is somebody willing to stand absolutely still with an axe coming at his face — and the moment he flinches, it is over. This craft was always a thing between two people. One who swings and one who stands still. Take away either and the craft is gone.
A box factory outside Jiayuguan closed in May of its thirtieth year, the land sold for warehousing and the two machines sold to a plant in another province for a hundred and ten thousand yuan. The man who had run them was sixty in April. He carried thirty-four exercise books home in three cartons, up six flights, and they filled a shelf and a half of a cupboard where they had filled four shelves of a steel cabinet.
In those books are every consignment and every reported breakage of thirty years, and the reason they contain anything at all is that sixty-one of the two hundred and thirteen firms he sold to ever bothered to complain. Without those sixty-one there is no series and nothing to read.
Offered two hundred yuan to look at a shipping document and say one sentence, he said it was too much and worked out his own factory wage per minute to prove it. And then: I know what you're buying. But the thirty years are not mine alone. Sixty-one firms talked to me. If you're paying, those sixty-one should have a share. And: they can't be found.
The fee was settled at half, and he declined to take it in money. What he asked for instead was one printed table, posted to him once a year — a table of every firm he ever supplied, how long each lasted, and how many times each complained. He already had a copy, folded in four in his shirt pocket, furred at the edges.
I've looked at it a lot this year. What for? I count the sixty-one. And: I can still put a face to fifty-three of them. Last year I never counted properly. This year I did. It's fifty-three.
I'll count again next year.
