English Mirror: The king said: I have a kingdom, and I will provide for the master all his life. The master said: your kindness is more than one of my slight virtue can accept. — And so he did not eat; for three days not water nor gruel passed his lips. On the fourth day the king, seeing his breath failing, was seized with shame and fear, and swore brotherhood with him instead.
Dongpo's Note
Out of the airport at twelve forty and I stopped, which is exactly what happened in Chengdu in November and in reverse. That was wet. This is dry and scalding — forty-three on the phone, higher at ground level, and you can feel it through the soles at the kerb.
A pickup, a nephew of twenty-odd with very good Mandarin, air conditioning not really coping. Gravel either side and then, abruptly, green: vine trellis in unbroken sheets with shade beneath. I wound the window down once and wound it straight back up; the air comes in like an oven door.
Forty minutes, then a dirt track, and drying houses. One, two, then a whole row — the same latticed mud construction as Dunhuang, larger and far more numerous. I counted to thirty-seven and gave up because the road turned and there were more. The nephew, over his shoulder: a hundred and twenty-seven. All your uncle's? All of them. And then: another twenty rented elsewhere.
Abdul Rahman is sixty-four, half a head taller than me, white beard cut short, white shirt with the sleeves turned to the elbow, decades of callus on the hands and the nails scrupulously clean. He waited inside an empty house rather than in the yard. July: the grapes do not come down until the end of August.
The first thing I felt going in was cool. Forty-three outside, low thirties in there, the wind running continuously through several hundred holes. Touch the wall. It was cold. Fifty outside, thirty on this wall. Two taps with the flat of his hand: a foot and a half of earth.
In the store house he opened a sack and put a handful in my hand. The same translucent yellow-green as Chang's. Two of them: sweet, but sweeter more directly, and the finish shorter. I said nothing. He looked at me. You've eaten Chang Yushan's. I have. His comes back sweeter for longer. Entirely without resentment: it's cold there. Cold at night. And, tipping the handful back into the sack: a hundred and twenty-seven houses here and I can't produce that flavour.
The scale: 147 houses, two turns a season, twelve tonnes fresh per house per turn. 3,528 tonnes fresh, 784 tonnes dry, 1,568,000 jin. Chang does 42,000. Thirty-seven times. Two buyers in Guangzhou, one in Shanghai, three in Urumqi, plus export through Khorgos: ninety percent. The remaining ten sold loose.
Over dinner under the trellis he came to it with no preamble. I know about your two hundred bags in March. Chang told you. He sent me a photograph — and he produced his phone with my own four lines of sticker text on it. House three, one grade down, three yuan refunded. My printing, in a Turpan man's phone.
I can't do that. Why not? A hundred and forty-seven houses. I don't know which house any given sack came out of.
Then four terms, every one of them better than I had prepared for. Fifty fen a jin under his Guangzhou price. No payment up front — ship in March, settle in June. No minimum order, any quantity. And then, after a pause before he said it: I'll clear three houses and keep them for you. Recorded separately. Which sack from which house, I'll record it. I can do your sticker.
Three houses is 72 tonnes fresh, 16 dry, 32,000 jin. I have sold four hundred bags this year. A hundred jin. Three hundred and twenty times what I move.
I didn't answer. What are you thinking? — Why I'm worth this. He laughed, and did not spare me: You're not. A hundred jin. I put out more than that in a day. Then why? And he put my chopsticks down for me with one sentence: Because I'm sixty-four.
Qu Wentai was in the guest room at eleven, at the low table, not yet forty by the look of him, in a heavily patterned brocade robe of an almost painful brightness, rings on his fingers. How much did he offer you? Four things. He heard them and laughed. I gave more.
He recited it like something long since memorised. Thirty sets of religious robes. Face-covers, gloves, boots, stockings. A hundred taels of gold, thirty thousand in silver. Five hundred bolts of damask and silk. Thirty horses, twenty-five servants. And: twenty-four letters — one to each of twenty-four kings along the road, each with a bolt of heavy damask enclosed.
Which is not a gift. That is paving an entire road. Why so much? I wanted to keep him.
Did you? No. Flat. I told him: don't go; this kingdom will provide for you all your life. And? He said his virtue was too slight to accept it. Then he turned the ring on his finger. And then he stopped eating. Three days, not water. On the fourth morning I went in to him and his breath was going. A pause. That was when I understood. Understood what? That what I had given him, he could not repay. And: what cannot be repaid is not a gift.
So he raised him up and swore brotherhood instead. And afterwards? He still gave everything. Nothing withheld? Not one item. Then what changed? What a brother gives you, you need not return. What a king gives you, you must.
*Which is Cao Yijin in the poplars last November from the other side. One side marrying out and the other not is not a marriage, it is a gift. And this: give too much, and it stops being a gift too.
Then the part I had read and had not heard. I made him promise one thing. Three years in Gaochang on the way back. He agreed. Insects outside. He was away seventeen years. A pause. When he came back there was no Gaochang. And: I died fourteen years before he returned. When the Tang army came in the fourteenth year of Zhenguan I was already ill. And then: those three years he promised me — afterwards there was nowhere to repay them. — M.
Marco's Memo
Memo to file. Turpan, 12 July 2028.
1. The counterparty. 147 drying houses (127 owned, 20 rented), two turns, 12 t fresh per house per turn: 3,528 t fresh → ~784 t dry → 1,568,000 jin/season. Chang: 42,000. Ratio 37:1. Offtake: two Guangzhou, one Shanghai, three Urumqi, plus Khorgos export = 90%; 10% sold loose.
2. Quality, admitted unprompted. His fruit is sweeter and shorter on the finish; Chang's has a longer return. His explanation: it's cold there, cold at night. And: a hundred and twenty-seven houses and I can't produce that flavour. Note that this is the third producer on this trip to volunteer their own weakness before being asked (Chang's east/west two-grade spread, ch.132; Qin's counted 4%, ch.127). The pattern is now firm enough to use as a screen: a supplier who states his variance unprompted is a different category of counterparty, and the ones who don't are not being modest.
3. What he cannot do, and why it matters more than what he can. 147 houses, and he cannot say which house a given sack came from. He has seen my sticker; he understands exactly what it is; he says plainly that he could not have issued it. Scale bought him volume and cost him the one thing I sell. Chang's six houses are the reason "house two, east end" is a sentence that can be written at all.
4. The four terms offered. −0.50/jin against his Guangzhou price / no prepayment, March ship and June settle / no minimum order / three houses cleared and recorded separately, with per-house traceability.
5. Declined the first three; accepted only the fourth. Reasoning, because I want it on the record before I find out whether I was right. — −0.50 on volume I cannot lift is a discount on nothing: at 3,000 jin it is ¥1,500, and it prices in an expectation of scale I have not earned. — Ninety-day terms on 32,000 jin is effectively him lending me two hundred thousand yuan. I cannot repay that if the season goes wrong, and an obligation above what I can carry is ch.131's unpayable fine and ch.129's fifty thousand. — No minimum order means he absorbs freight and handling on every hundred-jin shipment: he loses once per despatch, and I would make him lose ten times a year. — All three are him subsidising downward. The fourth is too, but the fourth is the only one I can repay.
6. Why the fourth is repayable and the others are not — and this is the distinction I want to keep. The first three transfer money, and money I cannot return until I am large. The fourth requires three of his people to change how they work — a recorder, a bagger, a stacker. I can pay wages for three people. And more to the point, I can supply the thing that makes the change worth making, which is a buyer who cares which house it came from. Offered to cover the three wages. He waved it off; I finished anyway, because it is not about the money: three houses yield 32,000 jin and I will take at most 3,000. The other 29,000 remains untraceable and unsold at a premium. The arrangement is worthless to him within a year unless somebody wants the other twenty-nine thousand.
7. And the thing I said next, which I am not sure I was entitled to say. He said Guangzhou and Shanghai don't want traceable goods, they want cheap. I said: that's because you have never asked them whether they want dear. I have no evidence for this. What I have is one data point — 200 bags at ¥26 gone in four hours with 310 unfilled enquiries — from a market of 8,900 people in one city. Extrapolating that to Guangzhou wholesale is exactly the error I spent seventeen days in Gansu learning not to make (ch.136: shelf life does not travel; neither does willingness to pay). Record it as a hypothesis with a date, per ch.140: 12 July 2028 — his large buyers would pay a premium for per-house traceability. Untested. No basis.
8. Qu Wentai, and the rule I came away with. Thirty robes, a hundred taels of gold, thirty thousand in silver, five hundred bolts, thirty horses, twenty-five men, and twenty-four letters of introduction each with a bolt enclosed — which is not hospitality, it is the purchase of an entire route. And the purpose was stated without embarrassment: I wanted to keep him. Three days without water, and on the fourth morning: what I had given him, he could not repay. What cannot be repaid is not a gift. The resolution is the operative part. He gave everything anyway — not one item withheld — but swore brotherhood first. What a brother gives you, you need not return. What a king gives you, you must. So the same transfer of goods can be a binding or not, depending on what relation is declared over it. The value is identical. The obligation is not. Which I should apply to what I have just accepted: I have taken the one term I can repay and declined three I cannot, and I should say so to him plainly rather than let it be read as modesty.
9. And the coda I cannot get out of my head. He extracted a promise of three years in Gaochang on the return. Seventeen years later there was no Gaochang, and he had been dead for fourteen. Those three years — afterwards there was nowhere to repay them. An obligation can become unpayable not because the debtor fails but because the creditor ceases to exist. Nothing in any of my clauses contemplates that. Chang is sixty-two. Abdul Rahman is sixty-four, and gave that as his reason for dealing with me at all.
10. And the last thing, in the yard at eight thirty. He said I sounded like someone from thirty years ago. Who? A carter. From Zhangye. Who ran a consignment jointly with his father. Did it get through? No. And, from the doorway: his son arrives the day after tomorrow.
English Highlight
"He did not eat; for three days not water nor gruel passed his lips. On the fourth day the king, seeing his breath failing, was seized with shame."
The list of what had been given is worth reading in full, because the story is usually told as generosity. Thirty sets of robes. Face-covers, gloves, boots, stockings. A hundred taels of gold and thirty thousand in silver. Five hundred bolts of damask and silk. Thirty horses and twenty-five men. And twenty-four letters addressed to twenty-four kings along the westward road, each with a bolt of heavy damask enclosed.
That is not hospitality. That is buying an entire route on someone's behalf.
Asked why, the king who gave it did not dress it up. I wanted to keep him. He had said: stay, and this kingdom will provide for you all your life. The monk had said his virtue was too slight to accept it, and then had stopped eating.
On the fourth morning: that was when I understood. What I had given him, he could not repay. And: what cannot be repaid is not a gift.
What happened next is the part that matters. He raised the man up and swore brotherhood with him — and then gave him everything on the list, not one item withheld.
Then what changed? What a brother gives you, you need not return. What a king gives you, you must.
The identical goods, moving in the identical direction, in one case a binding and in the other not, according to what relation was declared over them.
The modern version arrived under a vine trellis in Turpan in July, from a man with a hundred and forty-seven drying houses making a hundred and fifty times what his prospective buyer could sell. Fifty fen off the going price; no payment until three months after delivery; no minimum order; and three houses cleared, kept separate, and recorded sack by sack.
Three of the four were money moving downhill. The fourth was three of his own staff changing how they worked. Only the fourth was accepted, on the ground that it was the only one that could be repaid — wages for three people, and, more to the point, a buyer who cares which house the fruit came out of.
There is a coda. The king extracted one promise: three years in his kingdom on the return journey. It was given, and meant. Seventeen years later the traveller came back, and the kingdom had been destroyed, and the king had been dead for fourteen years.
Those three years he promised me — afterwards there was nowhere to repay them.
