English Mirror: Ten thousand households grieve, and the smoke rises over the fields. When will the hundred officials face heaven again? Autumn pagoda leaves fall in the empty palace, and at the Ningbi Pool the pipes and strings are playing.
Dongpo's Note
Wang Wei sat down in the empty seat beside me on the six o'clock coach out of Xi'an, in clean white hemp, carrying nothing, looking out of the window, and said the trees here are pruned better than in his day.
I had spent the first hour on one line, and specifically on three characters in it: not "shall not," but "evaluative opinion." Is 10.9% an evaluative opinion. Is thirty-seven kilometres. No — 10.9% is a record; "therefore thirty stores can hold fruit" is an evaluation. And then the fourth line, which stopped me: what about "the principal risk is standing empty"? That is not a record. I said it to twenty-six people yesterday. It is a judgement.
Tianbao fifteen, Chang'an. An Lushan takes the city and gives him a post, and he takes it. He answered that in one word and did not soften it. He took medicine to feign illness, was moved to Luoyang, held office under the rebels. After the two capitals were recovered, officials who had served were graded into six classes; the heavy ones died.
He did not. His brother offered his own rank in exchange, and there was the poem.
And the poem, he says, he never wrote down. Putting it on paper then was a capital matter. He recited it once, through a door at the Bodhi Temple, to Pei Di, who had come to see him. Pei Di memorised it. Later Pei Di testified.
What if he had not come. Three words: then it was gone.
I asked why he had not arranged more than one witness, and he said I had it backwards. He was not laying off risk. There was a man he trusted standing on the other side of a door, and if he had not said it he would have choked.
Half luck, he allows. The other half: the poem was true. Had he recited a loyal verse instead, Pei Di would have memorised that too — and would not have carried it to anyone. A man testifies for you not because of what you said, but because he believes you meant it.
Then the part I did not expect. He served most of his life in office and kept the estate at Wangchuan, and the world calls this half-official, half-recluse, and he says that is wrong. Wangchuan was not his retreat. It was the part of him he could not present. At court he wrote occasional verse — congratulations, farewells, responses to imperial poems — and he wrote them very well, well enough that he did not have to think. The Wangchuan poems were for himself and for Pei Di.
So: the clause I am being asked to sign prohibits court verse. It cannot prohibit Wangchuan. I said I do not write poems, I keep books. He said: to them, keeping books and evaluating are one thing; on paper they are not.
His draft of a ninth clause, which I wrote down on the coach: records kept during the appointment — ledgers, minutes, post-mortems — are working records, not evaluative opinions, and are not subject to clause eight; publishable after the term ends.
And if they refuse it? Then you know they were not buying your mouth. They were buying the ledger.
Luochuan, 14:00. Qiang Lei crouched by the compressor with a multimeter. The plant is fine; the pressure gauge needle wanders slightly; not serious, and he has recorded it. The ledger is on page 121. The fruit went out eleven days ago and he is still writing in it. What are you recording. The machine. It has to work again next year.
16:00, eleven people at the store door. I pinned a photocopy of the seven conditions on the wall, at the right-hand end, past the iron board, the plank, the four pages of my own provenance, the four scenario sheets and the seventeen-line call table. And I said out loud that none of them had been approved.
Director Wang asked why pin them up then. Because if they are approved I will claim I won them, and if they are not, and I do not pin them today, nobody will ever know I asked.
Li read all seven slowly and asked whether the 120,000 is Qiang Lei's wage. Not exactly. It is a post. A person leaves; a post written into a budget still pays the next person.
Qiang Donglin then asked about clause eight, which is not on the sheet, because it exists only as a photograph on my phone. He knew because Qiang Lei saw my screen on the coach yesterday, and said so, looking at the floor.
I gave Li the phone and asked him to read it aloud, and he put on his glasses and read it one character at a time. The old woman asked what an evaluative opinion is. I crouched down: it means I cannot say publicly whether this is being done well or badly. Then what can you say. Numbers. How many jin went in, how many spoiled, how much they sold for.
And she asked the question that stopped the whole yard: and if the numbers are bad?
I report them. And then I may not say "therefore this store should not have been built." But the number is there and anyone can think it for themselves.
She considered that and said: then make sure the numbers are accurate.
Qiang Donglin at dusk. Will you come in April. April is thinning. I said I do not know how. He knows I do not know how. Then he reminded me what Zhou said on the tenth: you under-thinned; with bagging and proper thinning, grade one goes from 36% to 50%.
And then the sentence I expect to carry all spring: your column in Xi'an is for thirty stores and takes three years to show. My twelve mu is one household and shows this October. — M.
Marco's Memo
Memo to file. Xi'an → Luochuan, 19 February. Night one hundred and four.
1. Clause eight, parsed. The operative term is not "shall not." It is "evaluative opinion."
— 10.9% total loss: record. — 37 km mean orchard-to-park distance: record. — "Therefore a village store can hold fruit": evaluation. — "The principal risk is standing empty": evaluation, and it is the single most valuable sentence I produced this year. Under clause eight I could not have said it.
So the clause does not silence me generally. It removes exactly the class of statement that converts records into decisions — which is the whole function I have been performing.
2. Wang Wei's precedent, and the reason it is the relevant one: he is the only person I have met this winter who was actually compelled all the way. Held office under the rebels; graded afterwards with men who were executed.
The poem that saved him was never written down — recitation, once, through a door, to one man who had come to visit, who memorised it and later testified.
Three things I am taking from it.
(a) An unpublished record is still a record. Clause eight governs publication to the outside. It does not govern what I write, what I keep, or what I tell one person who comes to see me.
(b) A witness carries your statement only if he believes you meant it. Had the poem been a loyal verse, Pei Di would have memorised it and done nothing with it. This is the same mechanism as Zhou Jianguo giving his name on camera, and as the ledger entry recording its keeper's own bad thought. Credibility is not produced at the moment it is needed; it is produced beforehand, by having recorded things against yourself.
(c) The distinction that makes clause eight survivable: court verse versus Wangchuan. He wrote occasional poems at court so fluently he did not have to think, and kept the other work for himself and one friend. To an institution, recording and evaluating are one activity. On paper they can be separated, and the separation has to be written by me, before I sign.
3. Proposed clause nine, to be submitted before signature:
"Ledgers, minutes and post-mortem records kept by the appointee during the term constitute working records, not evaluative opinions, and are not subject to clause eight. Publishable after the term ends."
Decision rule attached: if they refuse clause nine, they were not buying my silence — they were buying custody of the ledger, and that is a different transaction which I would decline.
4. Field note, Luochuan. Ledger at page 121, eleven days after the fruit left. He is now recording the compressor, unprompted, because it has to work again next year. That is the fourth unrequested instrument from the same person: seventy-four apples, the position map, the folding bed, and now off-season plant condition.
5. Disclosure at the wall, 16:00, eleven present. Pinned the seven conditions with the statement that none has been approved. Rationale given publicly: if approved I would claim credit; if not approved and not pinned today, no record exists that I asked.
Li's question — is the 120,000 Qiang Lei's wage — produced the sharpest formulation I have of what I am actually doing there: a person leaves; a post written into a budget pays the next person. That is the entire difference between a pilot and an institution, and it is why condition one is first.
Clause eight was disclosed too, because Qiang Lei had already seen it on my phone and said so rather than staying quiet. Read aloud by Li, one character at a time, to seven households.
The old woman's question: and if the numbers are bad? Answer: I report them; I may not draw the conclusion; the number is there and anyone can draw it. Her response, which is now my operating standard for the appointment: then make the numbers accurate.
6. Competing claim on April, from Qiang Donglin, and he is right.
Grade one at 36% now; Zhou's estimate with bagging and proper thinning is 50%. On 877 jin that is a shift of about 125 jin from grade two into grade one; at a real grade differential it is worth more per household than anything the column in Xi'an produces.
His framing, verbatim: the column is thirty stores and three years; twelve mu is one household and this October.
I have no rebuttal, and I should stop looking for one. Both are true and they compete for the same February-to-October. What I have to decide is not which matters more but which one fails if I am absent, and the honest answer is that the column does not need me after signature and the thinning does, because nobody in that village has ever been paid for grade.
April in Luochuan. Blocked out.
English Highlight
"Autumn pagoda leaves fall in the empty palace, and at the Ningbi Pool the pipes and strings are playing."
When the rebels took Chang'an, Wang Wei was given office and took it. Afterwards, officials who had served the rebellion were graded into six classes and the heavy ones were executed. He survived on two things: his brother offered up his own rank in exchange, and there was a poem.
The poem had never been written down. Putting it on paper at the time was a capital matter. He recited it once, through a door at the Bodhi Temple, to a friend who had come to visit and who memorised it and later testified to it.
Asked why he had not arranged more witnesses, he said the question had it backwards. He was not hedging. There was a man he trusted standing on the other side of a door, and if he had not said it he would have choked.
But he allowed that only half of it was luck. The other half was that the poem was true. Had he recited something loyal instead, his friend would have memorised that too — and would not have carried it to anyone. A person testifies for you not because of what you said, but because he believes you meant it. Which means the credibility is not manufactured at the moment it is needed. It is manufactured beforehand, by having put things on the record that cost you something.
Then the distinction that matters most for anyone signing a confidentiality clause. He served at court for most of his life and kept an estate at Wangchuan, and the world calls this half-official and half-recluse, and he says that is wrong. Wangchuan was not his retreat. It was the part of him he could not present. At court he wrote occasional verse so fluently that he did not have to think. The Wangchuan poems were for himself and one friend.
The clause in question prohibited issuing evaluative opinions in a personal capacity during the appointment. It prohibits court verse. It cannot reach Wangchuan — but only if somebody writes the boundary down before signing, because to an institution keeping records and passing judgement are the same activity, and on paper they are not.
Hence a ninth clause, drafted on a coach: ledgers, minutes and post-mortems are working records, not evaluative opinions. With a decision rule attached. If they refuse it, they were never buying silence. They were buying the ledger.
