English Mirror: Made by the Wensi Academy in the tenth year of Xiantong: one eight-inch silver-gilt censer-ball, weight twelve taels seven qian. Craftsman: your servant Chen Jingfu. Supervising officer: your servant Wu Hongque. Commissioner: your servant Nengshun.

Dongpo's Note

Foreign friend — I am a craftsman of the Wensi Academy. I have no biography. Nobody has ever written down when I was born.

You were looking at the censer-ball with the gimbal inside — the one where the little cup stays level however the sphere rolls. The inscription on it reads: made by the Wensi Academy in the tenth year of Xiantong, one eight-inch silver-gilt censer-ball, weight twelve taels seven qian. Craftsman, your servant Chen Jingfu. Supervising officer, your servant Wu Hongque. Commissioner, your servant Nengshun.

Three names. The man who made it, the man who checked it, the man who carried it.

Understand what each one covers. The maker is answerable for how it was made — and one name, not four, because someone must be the one who takes the whole object on his shoulders; another man cut the openwork on that ball, and if his work had been bad it would still have been mine, because I inspected it before I handed it over. The supervising officer weighs it: twelve taels seven qian, and not one qian less, because the silver came out of the imperial store and what does not come back has gone somewhere. And the commissioner signs because it is a hundred li to Fufeng, two or three days on the road, and a silver object can become fewer than it was.

One more thing, and it took me thirty years in that workshop to see it. We three were not of the same body. I was a craftsman and would die a craftsman. The supervising officer was sent down from the palace and would be gone in two or three years. The commissioner was of the Inner Palace and we met perhaps twice a year. None of us owed anything to the others. If the officer who weighed my work had come from my village, my work could not have been weighed.

And of the three, the dangerous one is the officer. If I do bad work it is visible. If the commissioner loses a piece on the road, the scale finds it. But if the officer says a bad thing is good, it passes — and nobody looks again, because he is the looking.

You asked how to prevent that. You cannot, at the time. What the names prevent is later. This ball was made in 869, sealed in that chamber in 874, and lifted out of the ground in 1987. For eleven hundred and thirteen years nobody could check it, and when it came up, the three names were still there. It does not matter whether anyone checks. It matters that it can always be checked.

Chen Jingfu appears in no history. Not a line. No birth, no death, no family. And his name was read aloud, in a glass case, eleven centuries and a half after he cut it.

If he had not cut it, there would be no such person.

Your iron plate has two names and needs three, and the missing one is the officer. At present the man who says the fruit is sound on the way in is the same man who says it is sound on the way out, and there is no one between. Find someone who loses nothing by saying it is bad. An inspector's worth is not how much he knows. It is that telling the truth costs him nothing.

Marco's Memo

Memo to file. Famen Temple underground palace, Fufeng, Baoji. Night eighty-seven.

Subject: chain of custody — the third name I do not have.

1. The object: a silver-gilt censer-ball, Xiantong 10 (869 CE), with an internal gimbal that keeps the ash cup level at any orientation. Inscription records: institution, item, weight, and three individuals — 打造匠 (maker), 判官 (supervising officer), 使臣 (commissioner). Sealed in the crypt 874, excavated 1987.

2. Segment definition, which is cleaner than any custody framework I have drafted: — Maker: answerable for how it was produced. — Officer: answerable for its condition on leaving the workshop, verified by weight against the issued silver. Tolerance stated as zero — the metal was imperial stock, so a light return is a theft question, not a quality question. — Commissioner: answerable for its condition on arrival, 100+ li and two to three days away.

Note that only one craftsman signs although several worked on it. His reason: someone must carry the whole object. Another man did the openwork; had it been defective it would still have been his name, because he inspected before handing over. Single-name accountability per segment, not per pair of hands. Which is the exact inverse of the seven-signature approval chains I have watched dissolve responsibility for twelve years, and consistent with Gong Kai on night seventy-four.

3. The structural feature I would not have inferred from the object alone: the three signatories were drawn from three separate systems. Craftsman — lifetime workshop, no advancement path. Supervising officer — seconded from the palace, rotating out in two to three years. Commissioner — Inner Palace eunuch establishment, seen twice a year.

No shared promotion ladder, no shared table, no mutual obligation. His summary: if the officer who weighed my work had come from my village, my work could not have been weighed.

Independence is not an attitude. It is an org chart.

4. Weakest link identified, unprompted: the supervising officer. Bad craftsmanship is visible; loss in transit is caught by the scale; but an officer who certifies bad work as good creates no further check, because he is the check. Same failure Sang Hongyang described on night eighty-two — the reporter and the auditor being one interest.

His answer on prevention: signatures cannot prevent it contemporaneously. They prevent it retrospectively, and the horizon is not five years. 869 to 1987. Eleven hundred and thirteen years in which verification was impossible, and the names survived the interval intact.

"It does not matter whether anyone checks. It matters that it can always be checked." Same principle Kang the sabao gave me on night eighty-one about the Sogdian leather — and this is the version with an eleven-century proof.

5. Chen Jingfu is in no history. No dates, no family, nothing. His name exists solely because he cut it into the object he made.

6. THE GAP IN MY OWN DESIGN, which is why I came here without knowing why.

The iron plate carries two names — mine (terms) and Qiang Lei's (operation). Missing: the officer. At intake, Qiang Lei judges the fruit. At February sale, Qiang Lei judges the fruit. Same person on both sides of the storage period, with no independent party between.

And he is not disinterested. His variable pay is tied to depositors realising a gain. He has the strongest possible incentive to grade generously on the way out.

I designed that incentive myself on night eighty, and approved of it at the time.

7. Resolution, which was sitting in front of me since night eighty-three. Zhou. Nineteen years in the trade, no relationship to the village, no stake in the cooperative, explicitly not here to help me — therefore he loses nothing by saying the fruit is bad. He is already coming on 10 February.

He is not a customer. He is the supervising officer, and I invited him without understanding what I was inviting.

8. 19:20. Instructed Qiang Lei: three names per lot — depositor, recorder, inspector — and the inspector is not him, because his saying "sound" benefits him.

His reply, after a long silence, and I am recording it in full because it is the most important thing anyone has said to me this month: he spent two hours this afternoon imagining February going badly, and found in himself the thought that if the spoilage were small he might not mention it — not to deceive anyone, but so that his father and I would not lose face. And then: the moment that thought appeared, I could no longer be the one who inspects.

He asked whether to log it. Logged: 28 November, I considered under-reporting spoilage.

A man who writes that sentence into his own ledger is the right man to keep the ledger. He is simply not the right man to certify it.

9. 19:40, unknown Xi'an number. The Fruit Industry Association — the office that gave me fifteen minutes in July — inviting me to dinner tomorrow with Chairman He.

Stated reason: he has heard about the Luochuan store. And that I put up an iron plate.

English Highlight

"Craftsman: your servant Chen Jingfu. Supervising officer: your servant Wu Hongque. Commissioner: your servant Nengshun."
The inscription on a silver-gilt censer-ball from the Famen Temple crypt — made by the imperial Wensi Academy in 869, sealed underground in 874, recovered in 1987 — records not only what the object is and what it weighs, but three separate men.
Each covers a distinct segment. The maker answers for how it was produced. The supervising officer answers for its condition leaving the workshop, verified by weighing it against the silver issued from the imperial store — a tolerance of zero, because metal that does not return has gone somewhere. The commissioner answers for its condition on arrival, a hundred li and three days later.
Only one craftsman signs, although several worked on it, because someone must carry the whole object: another man cut the openwork, and a fault in it would still have been Chen Jingfu's, since he inspected before handing over. One name per segment, not one name per pair of hands — the opposite of a modern approval chain, where seven signatures distribute a responsibility until none of it lands.
And the three came from three unconnected establishments: a lifetime workshop craftsman, a palace officer rotating out within three years, and a eunuch of the Inner Palace seen twice a year. No shared ladder, no shared table, nothing owed. As he puts it: if the officer who weighed my work had come from my village, my work could not have been weighed. Independence is not a disposition. It is an organisational chart.
As for whether the names deterred anything at the time — he says they could not. What they do is guarantee that verification remains possible. Eleven hundred and thirteen years passed in which nobody could check, and when the object came out of the ground, the three names were intact.
Chen Jingfu appears in no history. He exists because he cut his name into what he made.
